Companies Using Sophos
Our live crawl finds Sophos on 46,240 domains in the August 2026 rollup, and 41,900 of the 47,391 domains we currently see it on, 88.4%, resolve to an identifiable organisation. The companies using Sophos named further down include Hilton, L'Oréal, Qualcomm, Kotak Mahindra, Sopra Steria, the Junta de Andalucía, Bandhan Bank, Max India, Stefanini Group, Anywhere Real Estate, Bharat Oman Refineries and the University of Arizona. Those are the loudest names on the list rather than the shape of it: 32,394 of the 40,173 companies with a size band, 80.64%, employ fewer than 200 people, and only 1,955, 4.87%, employ more than a thousand.
What puts a domain on this list is a DNS record. We match two clauses joined by an OR, a Sophos-domain-verification TXT record on the domain or sophos.com in the domain's MX routing, and either one is enough. The obvious reading is that MX carries the count, because mail routing is live and self-cleaning. It does not. We resolved DNS for 22 matched domains and 22 of 22 carried the verification TXT record while only 6 of 22 routed mail through Sophos. The clause that fires is the account marker, not the routing, and that changes what the number means: a TXT record proves the domain was verified for a Sophos service at some point, and it does not expire when the contract does.
Two consequences follow and both belong above the fold. The count undercounts Sophos: endpoint protection, firewalls and managed detection and response are sold alongside email, and none of them touch DNS, so 46,240 is a floor weighted toward customers who set up domain-verified email protection. And 601 of the 47,949 domains we have ever seen carrying this signal no longer show it, 1.3%, which is not a retention figure. A verification record survives the account that created it, so a low drop rate here measures how rarely a zone file gets tidied. Sophos ranks 7th of 12 in Email Security on 6.43% share, a filing this page argues with below. Filter the websites using Sophos by size, country, industry and co-installed technology underneath. Sophos Usage Statistics
Sophos reads 39,536 domains on our June 2026 rollup, 45,827 in July and 46,240 in August. Three points cannot carry a growth rate, and this movement is coverage rather than adoption. The crawled domain set turns over every month, with dead domains dropping out and newly discovered ones coming in, and detection widens at the same time: the total number of domains seen carrying the Sophos signal moved from 39,547 to 46,606 across those three months. Read the three points as three sightings of a population we can see progressively more of, not as a trend in sales. A second caution belongs here, specific to this technology. The signal is a DNS record rather than something on a page, and a verification TXT record is written once and left alone, so a domain enters this series when we first resolve its DNS and then rarely leaves. Movement in the line is us finding domains, not customers signing contracts. The August figure, 46,240, is the one quoted at the top of this page.

Read this list for what it is. All twelve sit in the largest employee bands, and the base they are drawn from is 80.64% under 200 employees, 32,394 of 40,173 sized companies. A verified domain at Hilton or Qualcomm tells you Sophos protects a domain those companies own. It does not tell you Sophos is their primary security vendor, and it is not evidence that Sophos is an enterprise product.
Which Countries Use Sophos the Most?
Which countries use Sophos the most? The United States holds 12,627 of the 41,454 companies we could place, 30.46%, and second place is the row worth stopping on: Germany on 7,493, 18.08%, more than double the United Kingdom on 3,408, 8.22%. Then Australia 2,408 (5.81%), Canada 2,080 (5.02%), Switzerland 1,440 (3.47%), Italy 1,270 (3.06%), France 1,178 (2.84%), Spain 1,096 (2.64%), the Netherlands 949 (2.29%), India 591 (1.43%), Austria 553 (1.33%), Brazil 423 (1.02%), New Zealand 413 (1.00%) and Belgium 390 (0.94%). Sophos is headquartered in Abingdon, Oxfordshire, and its home market is third here. Germany, Switzerland and Austria together are 9,486 companies, 22.88% of the 41,454, against 8.22% for the United Kingdom. That is not an accident of one table. Four rows in the technology stack below agree with it from a completely different direction: TYPO3 CMS on 3.58% of the 47,391 live domains, IONOS on 3.65%, ALL-INKL on 1.13% and Borlabs Cookie on 3.02% are all German-market products. Company records and detected technology are separate measurements that could disagree, and here they do not. Country is the headquarters on the company record, not where the mail server sits.
Share of the 41,900 Sophos domains we matched to a company record — 90.6% of the 46,240 we detect. Top 15 countries shown, so these do not sum to 100%. Domains with no matching company record are not represented here and skew small and independent.
Sophos Market Share Among Email Security
What is Sophos's market share? Sophos holds 6.43% of Email Security and ranks 7th of 12 in that category, on 46,240 domains. The rows above it are Microsoft Defender on 268,449 domains and 37.34%, Jellyfish on 96,512 (13.42%), Mimecast on 69,123 (9.61%), MailChannels on 65,764 (9.15%) and Barracuda on 64,320 (8.95%). Two of those rows are wrong, and they are wrong in our own records rather than in someone else's. The Microsoft Defender entry matches an MX record pointing at ppe-hosted.com, a domain whose nameservers belong to Proofpoint, so those 268,449 detections are Proofpoint Essentials filed under a Microsoft label. The Jellyfish entry matches MX jellyfish.systems, a shared mail host rather than a security product, so that row counts tenants of a hosting arrangement. Until both are corrected, treat this column as an ordering of detections rather than as market share, and treat 6.43% as a position in that ordering. One further caveat applies to the whole category: it is a mail-routing taxonomy, so a vendor sold as endpoint and firewall protection with email attached is measured on the email part only.
Top Competitors by Market Share
Sophos Customers by Company Size & Age
What size companies use Sophos? This is the table that defines the page. 11,723 of the 40,173 companies with a size band, 29.18%, employ 11 to 50 people, 11,522 (28.68%) employ 10 or fewer and 9,149 (22.77%) employ 51 to 200. Add those three bands and 32,394 companies, 80.64%, sit under 200 employees. The upper half of the table is thin by comparison: 201-500 holds 4,021 (10.01%), 501-1,000 holds 1,803 (4.49%), 1,001-5,000 holds 1,613 (4.02%), 5,001-10,000 holds 199 (0.50%) and 10,001+ holds 143 (0.36%). Everything above a thousand employees is 1,955 companies, 4.87%. Now set that against the named table below, which opens with Hilton, L'Oréal, Qualcomm and Kotak Mahindra. That list is ordered by LinkedIn following, so it shows the top of the base and not its centre, and reading it as evidence of an enterprise product gets the shape of this data backwards. Sophos is a small-business product sold at volume, largely through partners and managed service providers, which is also why IT Services and IT Consulting leads the industry table.
Company Size Distribution
Company Age (Founded Decade)
The 2010s lead at 19.32% of the 27,019 companies with a founding year on file, 5,219 companies, and the 2000s follow closely at 5,076, 18.79%. What stands out is how little separates the rest: Pre-1960 takes 4,287 (15.87%), the 1990s 4,280 (15.84%), the 1980s 3,097 (11.46%), the 1970s 2,234 (8.27%), the 1960s 1,452 (5.37%) and the 2020s 1,374 (5.09%). No decade holds a fifth of the base. Flat is the finding. Profiles built around a regulated buyer spike hard on Pre-1960, because universities and government bodies are old by construction; profiles built around a venture-funded category spike on the 2010s. Sophos does neither, which is what you would expect from a product bought because a company has email and needs it filtered, rather than because of what the company is or when it started. The 2020s bucket being smallest carries one caveat: a company founded in 2023 has had less time to acquire a dated company record at all, so read the recent tail as partly an age-of-record effect.
What Industries Use Sophos the Most?
IT Services and IT Consulting leads at 6.88% of the 38,034 companies with a recorded industry, 2,617 companies, followed by Construction at 2,199 (5.78%) and Financial Services at 1,280 (3.37%). Then Hospitals and Health Care 1,106 (2.91%), Real Estate 1,029 (2.71%), Machinery Manufacturing 808 (2.12%), Retail 740 (1.95%), Software Development 723 (1.90%), Government Administration 655 (1.72%) and Law Practice 654 (1.72%). The number to read is not the order but the ceiling. The top label reaches only 6.88%, and the ten labels shown together account for under a third of the base, so adoption is horizontal: nothing about Sophos is industry-specific and the distribution behaves like a sample of companies that have a domain with mail on it. IT Services leading is the one row that is not horizontal, and it is the channel showing through rather than a vertical. Managed service providers run Sophos in their own tenancy and deploy it for their clients, which puts provider and client into this data under different names.
Companies using Sophos do not cluster into a single buyer the way they do on a regulated or vertical product, so the useful reading here is what the middle rows say about company size rather than about sector. Construction at 2,199 companies, 5.78% of the 38,034 with an industry, is the row that shows it. Construction firms are numerous, small, spread across sites and inclined to buy IT as a package from a local provider, and they do not appear near the top of enterprise security profiles. Real Estate at 1,029 (2.71%), Machinery Manufacturing at 808 (2.12%), Retail at 740 (1.95%) and Law Practice at 654 (1.72%) describe the same buyer: a business under two hundred staff, with a domain, and a compliance or insurance reason to be able to say its email is filtered. IT Services and IT Consulting at 2,617, 6.88%, sits on top of all of them because it contains the seller as well as the buyer. Managed service providers are the route into a base that is 80.64% under 200 employees, and a provider that standardises on Sophos verifies its own domain and then verifies its clients' domains, so the channel appears in this data twice. The regulated block that dominates many security profiles is present but small: Hospitals and Health Care 1,106 (2.91%), Financial Services 1,280 (3.37%) and Government Administration 655 (1.72%) come to 3,041 companies, 8.00% of the 38,034. One record caveat before reading any row too closely: industry sits on the company record rather than on the domain, so a holding company and its operating subsidiary can be filed under different sectors while sharing one verified domain.
Sophos Alternatives & Competitors
This table lists the five largest technologies in the same taxonomy bucket, and two of them are mislabelled in our own records. Microsoft Defender at 268,449 domains and 37.34% matches an MX record pointing at ppe-hosted.com; resolve that domain's nameservers and they belong to Proofpoint, so the row is Proofpoint Essentials wearing a Microsoft label. Jellyfish at 96,512 (13.42%) matches MX jellyfish.systems, a shared mail host, so that row counts tenants of one hosting arrangement rather than buyers of a security product. Mimecast on 69,123 (9.61%), MailChannels on 65,764 (9.15%) and Barracuda on 64,320 (8.95%) sit between those two and Sophos. Sophos ranks 7th of 12 on 6.43%, and until the two defective rows are corrected the share column should be read as an ordering of detections rather than as a market share. Its 6.43% is also computed against a denominator that contains both bad rows, so the figure is understated by construction.
There is no switching table on this page, and that is a decision rather than a gap. 601 domains have stopped showing Sophos since we began tracking in March 2026. We measured every candidate destination against its own base rate among the 47,391 live Sophos domains, and nothing survived. Hornetsecurity is on 15 of the 601 dropped domains, 2.50%, against a 1.36% base rate. Microsoft Defender is on 13, 2.16%, against 1.46%. Mimecast is on 13, 2.16%, against a base rate of 2.48%, and Barracuda on 8, 1.33%, against 1.82%: both of the largest peers are less common on the domains that dropped Sophos than on the domains that kept it, which is the opposite of what a migration looks like. The two candidates that do clear their base rate clear it on 15 and 13 domains. And the dropped signal is a verification record, which cannot measure a departure in the first place. We publish nothing here rather than dress up noise as a trend.

Tech Stack of Sophos-Powered Websites
Every percentage in this table divides by the 47,391 domains our live crawl currently answers for Sophos, a different base from the 46,240 in the August rollup at the top of the page. No row here is a share of the headline count.
Content management comes first and it reads like a small-business population. WordPress is on 23,552 domains, 49.70%, with TYPO3 CMS at 1,696 (3.58%), Wix at 1,456 (3.07%), Squarespace at 1,143 (2.41%), Drupal at 1,022 (2.16%), Webflow at 1,004 (2.12%) and Joomla at 737 (1.56%). Half the base on WordPress, with Wix and Squarespace present at all, is not the profile of an enterprise web estate.
Hosting says the same thing and adds a country. GoDaddy is on 8,062 (17.01%), WP Engine on 2,441 (5.15%), IONOS on 1,731 (3.65%), Plesk on 808 (1.70%), OVHcloud on 685 (1.45%), Kinsta on 638 (1.35%) and ALL-INKL on 537 (1.13%). IONOS and ALL-INKL are German hosts, TYPO3 CMS above is a German content management system, and Borlabs Cookie below is a German WordPress consent plugin. Four rows, from four vendors in three product categories, all pointing at the 18.08% Germany share in the country table.
The group headed Verified SaaS Accounts on the Same Domains is the like-for-like comparison on this page, because every row in it is detected the way Sophos is, as a verification record written into DNS. Atlassian is on 3,088 (6.52%), Zoom on 1,172 (2.47%), DocuSign on 1,092 (2.30%), Webex on 804 (1.70%), Miro on 460 (0.97%), Smartsheet on 422 (0.89%) and LogMeIn on 393 (0.83%). Same mechanism, same persistence, same inability to expire, and the highest of them reaches 6.52% of the 47,391. That fits a population which buys security before it buys collaboration software.
Consent and privacy is a second read on company size, and it arrives without touching a company record. CookieYes is on 2,405 (5.07%), Cookie Control on 2,318 (4.89%), Cookiebot on 2,145 (4.53%), Complianz on 1,705 (3.60%), Borlabs Cookie on 1,430 (3.02%), Usercentrics on 975 (2.06%) and OneTrust on 715 (1.51%). OneTrust finishes last in that group. It is the enterprise consent platform, and on an enterprise base it heads this group comfortably; here it sits behind three WordPress plugins. CookieYes and Complianz are WordPress plugins, Borlabs Cookie is a WordPress plugin sold in German, and the ordering of this group is a company-size finding reached without reading a single company record.

Expert Analysis: Sophos Growth Trends & Key Signals for Sales Teams in 2026

The clause that fires is not the one you would expect
Sophos matches on two DNS clauses joined by an OR: a Sophos-domain-verification TXT record on the domain, or sophos.com in the domain's MX routing. Either one puts a domain into the 46,240. Which one actually fires decides what the number means, because the two records have close to opposite properties, and the intuitive answer turns out to be wrong.
MX is live routing. When a company moves off a mail security vendor the MX record has to change or the mail stops arriving, so an MX-based count cleans itself and a fall in it is a real departure. A verification TXT record is the reverse. It is written once during onboarding to prove control of the domain, it does not expire, and nobody goes back into DNS to remove it after a contract ends. We resolved DNS on 22 matched domains to find out which clause was carrying the count. 22 of 22 carried the verification TXT record. Only 6 of 22 pointed MX at Sophos.
This page is therefore written to the TXT clause, and the first casualty is the churn figure. 601 of the 47,949 domains we have ever seen carrying this signal no longer show it, 1.3%, which on almost any other profile would be a retention story. It is not one here. A record that outlives the account which created it cannot tell you whether that account is still paying, and 1.3% largely measures how rarely anyone tidies a zone file.
Read 1.3% as the drop rate of a marker, not of a customer. It is low because verification records are inert, not because the base is loyal. If you need a retention read on Sophos, this signal cannot give you one, and no arithmetic laid on top of it will.
The 6 of 22 that do route mail through Sophos deserve one line, because that subset is different in kind: an MX record pointing at sophos.com is mail being handled today, which is as live as a detection gets. It is a 22-domain sample and no percentage belongs on it, but it establishes that the MX clause is working rather than dormant.
The mechanism also decides what the count leaves out. Sophos sells endpoint protection, firewalls and managed detection and response alongside email, and none of that touches DNS. A company running Sophos across four hundred laptops with no Sophos email service has no verification record and does not appear here at all. 46,240 is a floor on Sophos's footprint, tilted toward customers who set up domain-verified email protection. That is the caveat to carry into any sizing exercise on this base.
Two of the rows above Sophos are wrong, and they are ours to fix
Sophos ranks 7th of 12 in Email Security on 6.43% share. Before anyone reads that as a competitive position, two of the rows above it need a correction that has not been made yet.
Microsoft Defender heads the category on 268,449 domains and 37.34%. The rule behind that row matches an MX record pointing at ppe-hosted.com. Resolve the nameservers for ppe-hosted.com and they belong to Proofpoint. Those detections are Proofpoint Essentials filed under a Microsoft name, and the row is more than five times Sophos's count. Jellyfish is second on 96,512 domains (13.42%), matching MX jellyfish.systems, which is a shared mail host rather than a security product, so that row counts tenants of a hosting arrangement. Between the two of them and Sophos sit Mimecast on 69,123, MailChannels on 65,764 and Barracuda on 64,320.
Two things follow. Sophos's 6.43% is computed against a denominator that includes both defective rows, so the share is understated by construction. And its rank of 7 is a rank inside a table with two known errors in it, which is not the same as a clean seventh place. TechnologyChecker.io publishes the ranking because the taxonomy requires one, and this paragraph exists so that nobody quotes 6.43% as a market share. Until the rows are corrected, the column is an ordering of detections. That is still useful. It is not the same thing.
An SMB base with an enterprise logo wall on top of it
The named table opens with Hilton, L'Oréal, Qualcomm, Kotak Mahindra and Sopra Steria. The distribution underneath says something else entirely. 32,394 of the 40,173 companies with a size band, 80.64%, employ fewer than 200 people. The largest single band is 11 to 50 on 11,723 companies, 29.18%, with 1 to 10 close behind on 11,522, 28.68%, and 51 to 200 on 9,149, 22.77%. Everything above a thousand employees comes to 1,955 companies, 4.87%, and the two largest bands, 5,001-10,000 and 10,001+, hold 199 and 143 companies respectively.
The named list is ordered by LinkedIn following, so it shows the loudest members of the base rather than its centre. A verified domain at Hilton means Sophos protects a domain Hilton owns. It does not mean Sophos is Hilton's security platform, and it is not evidence that this is an enterprise product. Just 4.87% of this base employs more than a thousand people.
A second and independent read arrives from the consent group in the technology stack, and it is worth trusting because it never touches a company record. Among the 47,391 domains our live crawl answers for, CookieYes is on 2,405 (5.07%), Cookie Control on 2,318 (4.89%), Cookiebot on 2,145 (4.53%), Complianz on 1,705 (3.60%), Borlabs Cookie on 1,430 (3.02%), Usercentrics on 975 (2.06%) and OneTrust last on 715, 1.51%. OneTrust is the enterprise consent platform; on an enterprise base it heads this group comfortably. Here it finishes behind three WordPress plugins. Two measurements that could easily have disagreed, company size bands and installed consent tooling, land on the same answer.
The industry table completes the picture. IT Services and IT Consulting leads on 2,617 companies, 6.88% of the 38,034 with a recorded industry, and no other label reaches 6%. Construction is second on 2,199 (5.78%), which is not a sector that appears near the top of enterprise security profiles. A horizontal distribution led by IT Services is the channel showing through rather than a vertical: managed service providers run Sophos in their own tenancy and deploy it for clients, so both ends of a partner relationship land in this data under different names. That is how a product reaches 32,394 companies under 200 employees without an enterprise sales motion.
Germany, agreed on by four things that cannot see each other
Sophos is headquartered in Abingdon, Oxfordshire. The country table does not look like it. Germany is 7,493 of the 41,454 companies we could place, 18.08%, against 3,408 for the United Kingdom, 8.22%. Add Switzerland on 1,440 (3.47%) and Austria on 553 (1.33%) and German-speaking Europe is 9,486 companies, 22.88%, close to three times the home country. The United States leads overall on 12,627 (30.46%), then Australia 2,408 (5.81%) and Canada 2,080 (5.02%).
Country on a company record is exactly the kind of field that can be wrong at scale, so it is worth checking against something that has nothing to do with company records. The technology stack supplies four checks, each independent of the others and of the country table. TYPO3 CMS is on 1,696 of the 47,391 live domains (3.58%), a German content management system with thin adoption outside German-speaking markets. IONOS is on 1,731 (3.65%) and ALL-INKL on 537 (1.13%), both German hosting companies. Borlabs Cookie is on 1,430 (3.02%), a German-language WordPress consent plugin. Four detections, four vendors, three product categories, one conclusion. The German weighting is real.
For anyone prospecting this base that reorders the target list. A DACH campaign reaches 22.88% of the placed companies here, in a market where the local hosting and CMS choices are distinct enough that both the messaging and the partner list have to be local.
Why there is no migration table
601 domains have stopped showing Sophos since we began tracking in March 2026, and the obvious next question is where they went. We ran every candidate destination against its own base rate among the 47,391 live Sophos domains and published none of it, for three reasons.
The first is that the two largest peers move the wrong way. Mimecast is on 13 of the 601 dropped domains, 2.16%, against a base rate of 2.48% on live Sophos domains. Barracuda is on 8, 1.33%, against 1.82%. Both are less common on the domains that dropped Sophos than on the domains that kept it, which is the opposite of a migration. The second is that the two candidates which do clear their base rate clear it on almost no volume: Hornetsecurity on 15 dropped domains, 2.50% against 1.36%, and Microsoft Defender on 13, 2.16% against 1.46%. Fifteen domains and thirteen domains are not a corridor, and the Defender row is the mislabelled one discussed above. The third reason subsumes the other two. The signal that dropped is a verification record, so its disappearance says a DNS entry was removed, not that a service was switched off. There is no departure event here to attach a destination to.
So this page publishes nothing rather than dress up noise as a trend. That is the standard TechnologyChecker.io applies everywhere: if a destination cannot beat its own base rate on the population it is supposed to be drawing from, it is not a destination.
What to do with this list
Three things. Prospect it as a small-business list, because 80.64% of the 40,173 sized companies sit under 200 employees and 4.87% sit above a thousand, and the named accounts at the top will mislead anyone who skips the distribution. Prospect it through partners, because IT Services and IT Consulting leads the industry table on 6.88% of 38,034 and that row is the channel rather than a vertical. Weight it toward German-speaking Europe, 22.88% of 41,454 placed companies against 8.22% for the United Kingdom. And carry the mechanism with you into every conversation: 46,240 counts domains that verified a Sophos email service, which is a subset of Sophos customers and a considerably smaller subset of Sophos deployments.
Frequently Asked Questions
Who uses Sophos?
Our live crawl finds Sophos on 46,240 domains, and 41,900 of the 47,391 we currently see it on, 88.4%, resolve to an organisation. Named users include Hilton, L'Oréal, Qualcomm, Kotak Mahindra, Sopra Steria and the University of Arizona. The typical user is far smaller than those names suggest: 32,394 of the 40,173 companies with a size band, 80.64%, employ fewer than 200 people.
How many customers does Sophos have?
We detect Sophos on 46,240 domains as of our August 2026 rollup, and our live crawl currently answers for 47,391. Counts are domains, not accounts, seats or subscriptions. The figure is also a floor: it comes from a DNS record tied to email protection, while Sophos endpoint, firewall and managed detection deployments leave no DNS trace and cannot appear here at all.
What is Sophos's market share?
Sophos holds 6.43% of our Email Security category and ranks 7th of 12, on 46,240 domains. Read that column carefully. Microsoft Defender leads on 268,449 domains (37.34%) but matches MX ppe-hosted.com, whose nameservers belong to Proofpoint, and Jellyfish on 96,512 (13.42%) matches a shared mail host. Until both are corrected the column orders detections rather than market share.
What are the best alternatives to Sophos?
In the same category we detect Mimecast on 69,123 domains (9.61%), MailChannels on 65,764 (9.15%) and Barracuda on 64,320 (8.95%). Two other rows above Sophos, Microsoft Defender and Jellyfish, are mislabelled in our records and should not be used to build a competitive set. Note also that the category is mail-routing only, so it does not cover endpoint or firewall alternatives.
Which countries use Sophos the most?
The United States leads with 12,627 of the 41,454 companies we could place, 30.46%, then Germany on 7,493 (18.08%), the United Kingdom 3,408 (8.22%), Australia 2,408 (5.81%) and Canada 2,080 (5.02%). Germany, Switzerland and Austria together are 9,486 companies, 22.88%, nearly three times the UK, where Sophos is headquartered. Country is the headquarters on the company record.
What size companies use Sophos?
Small ones, at volume. The largest band is 11 to 50 employees on 11,723 of the 40,173 companies with a size on file, 29.18%, and 32,394, 80.64%, sit under 200 employees. Above a thousand employees there are only 1,955 companies, 4.87%. The named table is all large brands because it is ordered by LinkedIn following, not because this is an enterprise product.
How old are companies that use Sophos?
The distribution is unusually flat. The 2010s lead on 5,219 of the 27,019 companies with a founding year, 19.32%, then the 2000s 5,076 (18.79%), Pre-1960 4,287 (15.87%) and the 1990s 4,280 (15.84%). No decade holds a fifth of the base. That is what a horizontal product looks like: age of company predicts very little about whether Sophos is present.
What is the ideal customer profile for Sophos?
A company under 200 employees that buys IT through a partner. In this data that is 32,394 of the 40,173 sized companies, 80.64%, with IT Services and IT Consulting the top industry on 2,617 of 38,034, 6.88%, and German-speaking Europe on 9,486 of 41,454 placed companies, 22.88%. Half the live domains run WordPress, 23,552 of 47,391, 49.70%.
How is Sophos detected on this page?
By DNS, on two clauses joined by an OR: a Sophos-domain-verification TXT record on the domain, or sophos.com in the domain's MX routing. We resolved DNS for 22 matched domains to see which clause fires. All 22 carried the verification TXT record and only 6 of 22 pointed MX at Sophos, so the account marker does the work, not the mail routing.
Does this count everyone who uses Sophos?
No, and the gap is large. Sophos sells endpoint protection, firewalls and managed detection and response alongside email, and none of that writes anything into DNS. A company running Sophos on every laptop with no Sophos email service will not appear in the 46,240. Treat the number as a floor, weighted toward customers who set up domain-verified email protection.
Is Sophos losing customers, and what does its 1.3% churn mean?
601 of the 47,949 domains we have ever seen carrying this signal no longer show it, 1.3%. That is not a retention statistic. The clause that fires is a verification TXT record, which proves an account existed, never expires, and is almost never removed after a contract ends. A low drop rate here measures how rarely a zone file is tidied, not loyalty.
Why is there no switching or migration data for Sophos?
Because no destination cleared its own base rate among the 47,391 live Sophos domains. Mimecast is on 13 of the 601 dropped domains, 2.16%, against a 2.48% base rate, and Barracuda 8, 1.33%, against 1.82%: both below. The two that clear it, Hornetsecurity and Microsoft Defender, do so on 15 and 13 domains. We publish nothing rather than dress up noise.
Why are two of the technologies ranked above Sophos mislabelled?
Because their rules match mail infrastructure rather than a product. The Microsoft Defender row matches an MX record for ppe-hosted.com, and that domain's nameservers belong to Proofpoint, so its 268,449 domains are Proofpoint Essentials. The Jellyfish row matches MX jellyfish.systems, a shared mail host, so its 96,512 domains are hosting tenants. Both are corrections we owe our own records.
Do domains that match Sophos actually route their mail through it?
Some do. On the 22 domains where we resolved DNS, 6 pointed MX at sophos.com, which is mail being handled by Sophos today rather than an account marker left in a zone file. That is a 22-domain sample and no percentage should be built on it, but it shows the MX clause is live rather than dormant.
