Companies Using Ahrefs
Our August 2026 crawl of 29.9M active business domains finds 51,370 companies using Ahrefs, the SEO and marketing intelligence platform (distinct from Ahrefs Analytics, its separate free web analytics tool). Below is the full list of companies using Ahrefs with market data, competitor analysis and industry context.
One thing to understand before reading any chart here: our only signal is the ahrefs-site-verification meta tag, which an owner adds once to prove they control a domain. It evidences a verification, not a live subscription, so this page measures reach rather than revenue. The top companies using Ahrefs include global agency networks, and per Ahrefs' own published figure, marketers at 44% of the Fortune 500 use the platform. In 2025-2026 Ahrefs added Brand Radar for tracking brand mentions in AI search, AI Forecasting, and native WordPress and Shopify plugins.

Ahrefs Usage Statistics
Ahrefs is a SaaS platform, not an embedded script, so our detection rests on a single signal: the ahrefs-site-verification meta tag a site owner adds once to prove ownership. That tag evidences a past verification rather than a current subscription, and it survives until someone removes it. We detect it on 51,370 domains as of August 2026, and 4,810 domains have dropped it since our coverage of the tag began in March 2026, a churn rate of 9.4%. That is higher than the DNS-based verification markers we track, because a meta tag gets swept away in a redesign, and lower than genuinely client-side products. Third-party sources measure the subscriber base instead: 6sense reports over 55,235 companies using the platform in 2026, and Ahrefs crossed $100M ARR bootstrapped by 2022, per CMO Tim Soulo.

Which Countries Use Ahrefs the Most?
Which countries use Ahrefs the most? The United States leads with 11,856 companies, 39.6% of the enriched base, followed by the United Kingdom (2,721), India (1,645), Australia (1,616) and Canada (1,582). India's third place is the notable one: it reflects the country's digital marketing services industry, where Ahrefs is standard toolkit for agencies serving Western clients. Continental Europe follows with Germany (970), the Netherlands (816), Spain (469) and France (465), and there is a visible emerging-market tail in the UAE (330), Turkiye (327) and Indonesia (259).
Share of the 29,928 Ahrefs domains we matched to a company record — 58.3% of the 51,370 we detect. Top 15 countries shown, so these do not sum to 100%. Domains with no matching company record are not represented here and skew small and independent.
Ahrefs Market Share Among SEO Tools
What is Ahrefs' market share? Ahrefs holds a 0.94% share of the SEO Tools category and ranks #4 of 48 tracked technologies, on 51,370 domains carrying its verification tag. That rank is not a like-for-like contest. The three products above it are on-page WordPress plugins that ship inside a site's HTML on every page: Yoast SEO (3,746,462 domains), RankMath SEO (939,870) and All in One SEO Pack (606,876). Ahrefs is an off-page research platform whose work happens in a browser tab, not on the customer's website. Comparing the two on domain counts measures how each is installed, not how many people pay for it.
Top Competitors by Market Share
Ahrefs Customers by Company Size & Age
Is Ahrefs only for small businesses? No, though small teams drive the volume. 51.47% of matched companies have 1-10 employees and 29.19% have 11-50, so roughly 81% sit under 50 people, based on 29,928 enriched companies. That is the agency-and-freelancer core. The mid-market is better represented here than on most tools we track: 12% have 51-200 employees and 3.97% have 201-500. Per Ahrefs' homepage, marketers at 44% of Fortune 500 companies use the tool, which the 0.32% of domains at 10,001+ employees plainly understates, since a Fortune 500 marketing team rarely adds a verification tag to the corporate homepage.

What Industries Use Ahrefs the Most?
Ahrefs' industry mix is strikingly flat, with no vertical above 4.8%. IT Services and IT Consulting leads at 4.77%, followed by Retail (4.41%), Construction (4.17%), Software Development (4.1%) and Advertising Services (3.81%). The presence of Construction, Real Estate (2.82%), Medical Practices (2.66%) and Law Practice (2.13%) so high in the table is the real signal: these are local-services businesses that compete almost entirely on organic search, and they are buying SEO tooling directly rather than through an agency.
IT services firms using Ahrefs form the largest vertical at 4.77%, closely followed by retail brands on Ahrefs at 4.41%. The more interesting cluster is local and professional services: construction companies using Ahrefs (4.17%), real estate (2.82%), medical practices (2.66%) and law practices (2.13%) together account for more than 11% of the base, industries where a single first-page ranking materially changes lead volume.
Ahrefs Alternatives & Competitors
The SEO tools category splits into two tiers that domain counts cannot compare fairly. On-page WordPress plugins embed into every page a site serves, so they accumulate enormous footprints: Yoast SEO (3,746,462 domains, 68.87%), RankMath SEO (939,870, 17.28%) and All in One SEO Pack (606,876, 11.16%). Ahrefs sits in the other tier, off-page research platforms alongside Semrush, Moz and SE Ranking, where the product is a subscription rather than an installed asset and our tag catches only the fraction of users who verified a domain. Per 6sense's 2026 data, Ahrefs leads that SaaS segment at 14.83% share against Semrush at 6.68%. Note that Ahrefs also offers Ahrefs Analytics, a separate free web analytics product; it appears on 10.52% of Ahrefs-verified domains.

Expert Analysis: Ahrefs Growth Trends & Key Signals for Sales Teams in 2026

Our August 2026 crawl detects the ahrefs-site-verification meta tag on 51,370 domains, of which 29,928 match an enriched company record. Ahrefs is unusual in our dataset because it is a SaaS platform rather than an embedded website technology, and that changes what these numbers can honestly claim.
What This Page Actually Measures
Ahrefs does not put a script on its customers' websites. Our only signal is a verification meta tag that an owner adds once, in order to prove to Ahrefs that they control the domain. Three consequences follow. The tag evidences a past verification, not a live subscription. It stays until someone deliberately removes it, usually in a redesign, which is why churn reads at a modest 9.4% (4,810 domains dropped since we began covering the tag in March 2026). And it systematically undercounts large organisations, because an enterprise marketing team verifies a property in Search Console far more readily than it edits the corporate homepage's <head>.
Treat 51,370 as a floor on reach. For the subscriber base, 6sense's 55,235+ companies is the better external reference, and Ahrefs' own $100M ARR by 2022, achieved without venture funding, is the commercial fact worth knowing.
"A verification tag is a receipt, not a heartbeat. It tells you this company proved ownership to Ahrefs at some point. It does not tell you they logged in this month. We publish it because reach is still useful, but anyone treating it as a subscriber count will be wrong in both directions."
- David Thomson, CTO at TechnologyChecker.io
Rank Four, But Not in the Same Contest
Ahrefs ranks #4 of 48 SEO tools at 0.94% share, behind Yoast SEO (3,746,462 domains), RankMath (939,870) and All in One SEO Pack (606,876). Those three are WordPress plugins. They emit markup on every page of every site that installs them, so their domain counts measure WordPress's installed base and a plugin directory's distribution. Ahrefs' work happens in a browser tab against its own crawl index; the only trace on a customer's site is the verification tag. The two tiers are not substitutes and the ranking should not be read as one losing to the other.
Customer Profile
51.47% of matched companies have 1-10 employees and 29.19% have 11-50. That is the agency, consultant and in-house-marketer core, and it is where the pricing complaints come from. What distinguishes Ahrefs from most tools at this size profile is the mid-market: 12% at 51-200 employees and 3.97% at 201-500 is a fatter middle than we typically see. By founding decade the base skews established rather than startup: 41.72% founded in the 2010s, 19.94% in the 2000s and 10.02% in the 1990s, with only 14.51% from the 2020s.
Sales Signal: The 11-200 employee band, roughly 41% of the base, is the practical target. These companies have budget for premium tooling but rarely a full-time SEO specialist, which makes them receptive to managed services and to tools that reduce the expertise required.
The Local-Services Tail
Ahrefs' industry distribution is flat, with nothing above 4.8%, but the composition is revealing. Alongside the expected IT Services (4.77%), Software Development (4.1%) and Advertising (3.81%), the table carries Construction at 4.17%, Real Estate at 2.82%, Medical Practices at 2.66% and Law Practice at 2.13%. Those four total more than 11%.
These are not marketing-technology buyers by instinct. They are local-services businesses for whom organic ranking is close to the entire acquisition channel, and their presence at this scale says Ahrefs has sold well outside the agency world it is associated with.
Geography
The United States accounts for 11,856 companies, 39.6% of the matched base, with the United Kingdom at 2,721. India ranks third at 1,645, ahead of Australia (1,616) and Canada (1,582), which reflects the country's digital marketing services export industry. The emerging-market tail, the UAE (330), Turkiye (327) and Indonesia (259), is small in absolute terms but consistent with agencies serving Western clients from lower-cost bases.
Why There Is No Migration Table
It is tempting to read WordPress SEO plugins as products Ahrefs displaces. Tested against the rate among companies that stayed, that reading does not survive, and the direction runs the opposite way.
25.85% of domains that still carry the Ahrefs tag also run Yoast SEO. Among domains that dropped the Ahrefs tag, only 14.07% run Yoast. Losing Ahrefs makes a domain less likely to run Yoast, not more, which is the signature of sites going quiet altogether rather than switching. RankMath tells the same story: 11.28% among stayers, 7.94% among leavers. Every other candidate fell below ten domains.
The underlying reason is that these products are complements, not substitutes. A site runs Yoast to control its own on-page markup and subscribes to Ahrefs to research everyone else's. Nobody chooses between them, so there is no corridor to report, and we would rather show an empty section than a manufactured one.
"The migration story we used to tell here was backwards. Domains that drop the Ahrefs tag are less likely to run Yoast than domains that keep it, which means they are not switching to anything. They redesigned, the tag went with the old template, and the subscription probably never changed."
- Mehmet Suleyman, CEO & Co-founder at TechnologyChecker.io
Technology Ecosystem
Across the live Ahrefs-verified set, Google Analytics appears on 79.59% of domains and WordPress on 47.57%, confirming that the base is heavily WordPress even though Ahrefs itself is platform-neutral. Cloudflare Browser Insights reaches 13.27%. The cross-sell datapoint worth noting: Ahrefs Analytics, the vendor's own free web analytics product, appears on 10.52% of domains that carry the Ahrefs verification tag, so roughly one in ten verified customers has adopted the second product. On the marketing side HubSpot leads at 7.34%, and front-end frameworks are sparse (React 5.49%, AMP 4.55%, Vue.js 4.39%), consistent with a content-site rather than an application population.
Key Takeaways
1. 51,370 is a reach floor, not a subscriber count. The verification tag proves a past verification and undercounts enterprises systematically.
2. Rank #4 compares two different things. Yoast, RankMath and All in One SEO are page-level plugins; Ahrefs is an off-page platform with one tag.
3. There is no migration corridor, and the previous claim was inverted. Leavers are less likely to run Yoast than stayers, meaning they switch to nothing.
4. Local services are 11% of the base. Construction, real estate, medical and legal practices buy Ahrefs directly, not through agencies.
5. India is the third market at 1,645 companies, driven by agencies serving Western clients.
6. One in ten verified domains also runs Ahrefs Analytics, the clearest in-product cross-sell signal on this page.
Sales Applications
Outreach template: "I noticed your site is verified with Ahrefs. Companies in [industry] that invest in off-page SEO research typically also need [your category] to [benefit]. Worth a short call?"
Targeting strategy: Focus on the 11-200 employee band in IT services, construction and professional services, based in the US, UK and Australia. These firms invest in SEO but rarely employ a dedicated specialist.
Competitive angle: Pricing is the documented objection in G2 sentiment, and it correlates with the small-team concentration: a solo consultant feels the entry plan far more than an agency spreading it across clients. Lead with ROI rather than feature parity.

Frequently Asked Questions
Who uses Ahrefs?
We detect Ahrefs on 51,370 domains, including IBM, Shopee, Progressive Corp.. A detection means the technology is present on that domain, which for large organisations is often a single storefront or subdomain rather than a company-wide deployment. Among domains we matched to a company with a resolved industry, the most common is IT Services and IT Consulting (4.77%).
How many customers does Ahrefs have?
We detect 51,370 domains running Ahrefs across our monthly crawl of live business domains. Company data could be matched for 29,928 of them (58.3%), and every company-size, industry and country breakdown on this page describes that matched subset rather than the full detected base. A further 4,810 domains carried a Ahrefs detection previously and no longer do.
What is Ahrefs's market share?
Ahrefs holds 0.94% of the SEO Tools category, ranking #4. This is a share of the domains we detect running a platform in this category — not a share of all websites, and not a share of spending — so it is not directly comparable to figures published on other denominators.
What are the best alternatives to Ahrefs?
The top alternatives to Ahrefs include Yoast SEO (68.87% market share), RankMath SEO (17.28% market share), All in One SEO Pack (11.16% market share), Baidu Push (0.42% market share) — measured as a share of the domains we detect running a platform in this category.
Which countries use Ahrefs the most?
United States leads with 11,856 matched Ahrefs domains, followed by United Kingdom (2,721), India (1,645), Australia (1,616), Canada (1,582). These are counts within the 29,928 domains we could match to a company record, not the full detected base.
What size companies use Ahrefs?
The most common company size is 1-10 employees, representing 51.47% of the Ahrefs domains we could match to a company record and size — a subset of 29,928 matched companies, not of all 51,370 detected domains. This is followed by 11-50 employees (29.19%) and 51-200 employees (12%).
How old are companies that use Ahrefs?
Among the Ahrefs domains we could match to a company with a known founding date, most were founded in the 2020s (14.51%), followed by the 2010s (41.72%). That matched subset is drawn from 29,928 companies and is not representative of all 51,370 detected domains. This suggests Ahrefs is most popular among relatively young companies.
What is the ideal customer profile for Ahrefs?
The ideal Ahrefs customer is: Company Size: 10-50 employees, Location: US, UK, or India, City: New York, London, Mumbai, Sydney, Founded: 2010-2019, Company Age: ~5-15 years old — based on our analysis of 29,928 enriched companies at TechnologyChecker.io.
What is the difference between Ahrefs and Ahrefs Analytics?
Ahrefs and Ahrefs Analytics are two separate products from the same company. Ahrefs (this page) is an SEO and marketing intelligence platform for backlink analysis, keyword research, site auditing, and rank tracking. It's a SaaS tool accessed via app.ahrefs.com with no client-side code. Ahrefs Analytics is a free web analytics tool (similar to Google Analytics) that embeds a lightweight 2KB tracking script on websites to monitor traffic, pageviews, and referral sources without cookies. The SEO platform starts at $29/month, while Ahrefs Analytics is free up to 1 million events/month.
Is Semrush better than Ahrefs?
It depends on your priorities. G2 reviewers say Semrush offers broader functionality across PPC, content marketing, and social media, while Ahrefs excels in backlink analysis and web crawl data depth. For pure SEO research and backlink auditing, many practitioners prefer Ahrefs. For an all-in-one digital marketing suite covering paid ads and social channels, Semrush has the edge.
How many people use Ahrefs?
Per 6sense's 2026 market analysis, over 55,235 companies use Ahrefs worldwide, and Enlyft reports 11,688 companies in their dataset. The actual paying subscriber count is estimated at roughly 20,000 per My Codeless Website, primarily small-to-mid-sized agencies and in-house SEO teams, with many additional users relying on Ahrefs' free tools.
Is Ahrefs good for SEO?
Yes, ahrefs has been a top-rated SEO tool for over a decade. It's known for having the largest backlink database in the industry, strong keyword research tools, and accurate site audit capabilities. Ahrefs' Content Explorer and Keywords Explorer are widely used by professional SEOs. As of 2026, the platform has expanded into AI-powered search analysis.
What are the key features of Ahrefs?
Ahrefs' core features include Site Explorer for backlink and organic traffic analysis, Keywords Explorer for keyword research with search volume and difficulty scores, Site Audit for technical SEO health checks, Content Explorer for identifying high-performing content, and Rank Tracker for daily SERP position monitoring. In 2026, the platform added AI-powered keyword research presets and AI search intent analysis for tracking visibility in Google's AI Overviews.
What is Ahrefs' pricing in 2026?
Ahrefs offers four main plans: Lite at $129/month, Standard at $249/month, Advanced at $449/month, and Enterprise at $1,499/month. Annual billing reduces costs by roughly 17% across all tiers. A $29/month Starter plan provides limited access for beginners moving beyond free tools. Standard and higher plans let you invite additional users for free, each with fair usage limits on searches and reports.
What is the difference between Ahrefs Lite and Standard?
The Lite plan gives access to all Ahrefs tools but limits report data and daily search quotas. The Standard plan adds 6 months of historical data, higher search limits, batch analysis capabilities, and unlimited fair usage for each active user. Standard is designed for SEO consultants, experienced freelancers, and in-house marketing teams who need deeper data for client work or company-wide projects.
What are the best Ahrefs alternatives?
Top Ahrefs alternatives include Semrush (broader marketing suite covering PPC and social), SE Ranking (budget-friendly cloud-based option popular with small agencies), Moz Pro (strong domain authority metrics and local SEO tools), Mangools (simplified interface for beginners), and SEO PowerSuite (desktop-based all-in-one toolkit with no monthly API limits). Each alternative's strengths vary depending on your budget, team size, and specific SEO workflow requirements.
What is the difference between RankMath and Ahrefs?
RankMath is a WordPress plugin that handles on-page SEO optimization: title tags, meta descriptions, schema markup, and content scoring directly inside your CMS. Ahrefs is a standalone SaaS platform focused on off-page SEO analysis: backlink auditing, keyword research, competitor tracking, and content gap analysis. They serve very different functions. Many SEO professionals use both tools together: RankMath for on-site optimization and Ahrefs for external research and strategy.
