Companies Using Chatwoot

I'm David Thomson, CTO at TechnologyChecker.io, and I run the detection rules behind this page. We expected Chatwoot to be a cloud product with a self-hosted side project. It's the other way round. Our September 27, 2026 crawl counts 8,842 websites running Chatwoot, 4,509 of them matched to a company record (51%), and most of them get the widget from a server Chatwoot doesn't operate.

What the rule sees, and why most of it is self-hosted

Chatwoot's widget script creates two objects on a page, chatwootSDK and $chatwoot, whichever server delivers it. Our rule reads those, so a university running Chatwoot on its own hardware counts the same as a startup on app.chatwoot.com. In a browser sample of 105 sites, 14 loaded the widget from Chatwoot Cloud and 75 from 63 other servers. Some belong to the organisation itself, like chatsupport.uni-paderborn.de. Others are agencies and software vendors reselling Chatwoot under their own name, such as app.commslayer.com and chat.grupohosting.cl.

The same property let one operator inflate the count. 3,235 domains, 26.8% of the raw total, were mirrors of a Chinese lottery operator's sites, served by four self-hosted Chatwoot servers and first seen almost entirely in July 2026. They explain the whole June to July jump in the raw monthly count, which is why the chart shows only September's cleaned reading.

Sales Signal: A self-hosted Chatwoot means a team with a developer who chose to run its own support stack. Sell them what sits around the inbox, such as hosting, integrations or AI. They've already picked their inbox.

Customer profile

Small, as you'd expect from a free tool: 56.6% of matched companies with a size on record have 1 to 10 employees and 28.39% have 11 to 50. Only 59 have more than 1,000. They're young too, with 42% founded in the 2010s and 29.41% in the 2020s.

The large names are a different crowd. Uninove, UNIZIK, Universität Paderborn, Tigo Guatemala and Hormuud Telecom could buy any help desk, and several run their own Chatwoot servers; keeping student or subscriber conversations on their own infrastructure is the likely draw. Chatwoot's own case studies feature FairDee, a Thai insurance platform that runs 180+ agents on LINE, and Ponea Health in Kenya (checked September 27, 2026). Neither shows up in our list, which is a reminder that a team answering customers through messaging apps can leave no widget on its website at all.

Sales Signal: Split the list by server. Cloud users are buyers of a hosted product; self-hosters with a public institution's domain are buyers of support contracts, compliance help and integration work.

Industry and geographic concentration

IT Services and IT Consulting leads at 10.07%, with Software Development (9.16%) and Technology, Information and Internet (7.19%) close behind, 26.42% between them. Real Estate is next at 4.77%. No industry reaches 11%.

The geography is the unusual part. The United States has 1,069 matched companies, but Brazil has 566, more than the UK (196) and India (178) combined. Brazil, Chile and Mexico hold 801 of the 4,509, and several white-label servers in our sample belong to Brazilian and Chilean agencies that run Chatwoot for their clients; chat.grupohosting.cl alone served five of the sampled sites.

Sales Signal: Chatwoot spreads through resellers. One reseller's server, app.commslayer.com, turned up on 7 of the 105 sites we sampled, so a deal with one agency that hosts Chatwoot can reach many of its installs.

Migration patterns

Two flows passed our tests, and both run into Chatwoot. 96 domains dropped Tawk.to while keeping Chatwoot since March 2026, 78 of them in the last 90 days, against 17 going the other way. 50 dropped Crisp, 41 in 90 days, against 5. Both are about four times what each rival's usual drop rate predicts among sites that had run the two tools together, and in a browser, 19 of 25 Tawk.to movers and 13 of 15 Crisp movers now run Chatwoot alone.

Two near misses stay off the table. LiveChat had 51 movers, but 47.8% of sites that ever ran both still run both, which looks like stacking. Intercom had 46, below our threshold of 50.

Sales Signal: Sites that replaced Tawk.to or Crisp with Chatwoot in the last 90 days have a fresh deployment and someone who owns it. That's the moment to offer setup, WhatsApp integration or managed hosting.

Technology ecosystem

Google Analytics runs on 68.17% of the 8,842 sites and the Facebook Pixel on 33.91%. WordPress powers 23.84%, with Elementor on 11.67%. Google Workspace (23.04%) leads Microsoft 365 (10.52%). Matomo (3.03%) and Umami (2.17%) add a self-hosting streak, and Yandex.Metrika appears on 3.36%. One tool is missing on purpose: Tailwind CSS, which our crawl would otherwise find on most of these sites, because Chatwoot's widget injects Tailwind's style variables into the page. Sales Signal: With WordPress on almost a quarter of these sites, a WordPress plugin is the cheapest way in. For teams that want an email-first help desk rather than a chat inbox, Help Scout (6,161 websites on its profile) is the closer fit.
