Companies Using Help Scout
Help Scout is a help desk built around a shared email inbox. Support teams answer customers inside it, and on the public web it shows up in two places: Beacon, the help and chat widget a company adds to its site, and Docs, its hosted knowledge base. Our September 2026 crawl finds one or the other on 6,161 websites. The inbox itself sits behind a login, so this list of companies using Help Scout is a floor. Help Scout says more than 12,000 customer-facing teams use it.
Companies that use Help Scout on their own sites include Hillman, Usborne, Obsidian Entertainment, Buffer and Honey. Most are small: 89.33% of matched companies have 50 or fewer staff. One caveat up front. 435 of the websites using Help Scout (7.1%) are parked domains for sale whose marketplace page runs Help Scout, so they're in the count but not in the named list or the stack.

Help Scout Usage Statistics
Our crawl counted 4,368 Help Scout domains in June 2026, 5,242 in July, 6,127 in August and 6,161 in September. Don't read that as a growth curve. The set of domains we crawl turns over every month, with dead sites dropping out and newly found ones added, and our detection signals widen over time: 1,358 of today's live Help Scout domains (22.07%) were first seen in August or September. The near-flat step from August to September is closer to the real picture, and September's 6,161 is the figure to quote.

Which Countries Use Help Scout the Most?
Which countries use Help Scout the most? The United States, with 1,771 matched Help Scout customers, nearly five times the United Kingdom's 372. Canada (206) and Australia (187) come next, so four English-speaking markets hold 2,536 of the companies we matched. Continental Europe is thinner: the Netherlands (93), Germany (82), France (66) and Sweden (59) add 300 between them, fewer than the UK alone.
Share of the 3,621 Help Scout domains we matched to a company record — 58.8% of the 6,161 we detect. Top 15 countries shown, so these do not sum to 100%. Domains with no matching company record are not represented here and skew small and independent.
Help Scout Market Share Among Live Chat & Messaging
What is Help Scout's market share? Help Scout holds 0.20% of Live Chat & Messaging and ranks #36 of 408 technologies there, based on our crawl at TechnologyChecker.io. That rank places Beacon among chat widgets, in a table led by WhatsApp click-to-chat links (35.01%). Help Scout's own market is help desks and shared inboxes, where it competes with Zendesk, Freshdesk, Front, Gorgias and Intercom. Each of those shows up on a different public signal, so we don't publish a like-for-like share race.
Top Competitors by Market Share
Help Scout Customers by Company Size & Age
Is Help Scout only for small businesses? Going by who runs it on a public website, mostly yes. Of the matched companies with a size on record, 57.44% have 1 to 10 employees and 31.89% have 11 to 50, so 89.33% have 50 staff or fewer. Only 26 employ more than 1,000, Hillman and Dayton Freight among them. The named list looks bigger than the base because it leads with the best-known companies, not the typical one.
Company Size Distribution
Company Age (Founded Decade)
73.86% of matched Help Scout companies with a founding year started in 2010 or later: 53.4% in the 2010s and 20.46% in the 2020s. The 2000s add 15.47%, and everything before 2000 comes to 10.68%. Help Scout itself launched in 2011, so its base is largely the same generation of companies it grew up with.
What Industries Use Help Scout the Most?
Software Development leads at 14.94%, followed by Technology, Information and Internet (9.92%) and IT Services and IT Consulting (5.49%), so tech rows make up 30.35%. After that the list flattens fast: Retail 3.48%, Wellness and Fitness Services 3.04%, Advertising Services 2.75%, Financial Services 2.51%. No other industry passes 3.5%, which fits a help desk sold on simplicity to any small team with a support inbox, per our enriched company data.
Software companies using Help Scout often put Beacon inside the product itself: 294 detections sit on an app. subdomain, and Buffer runs it on developers.buffer.com. E-learning companies on Help Scout (2.39%) include Corporate Finance Institute and Xello, both on a help. subdomain. Nonprofits using Help Scout include Ducks Unlimited Canada, whose help.ducks.ca is a Help Scout Docs site, and AnitaB.org.
Help Scout Alternatives & Competitors
The competitor table shows the largest rows in Live Chat & Messaging, based on our market share data at TechnologyChecker.io: WhatsApp (35.01%), Re:amaze (8.97%), OpenAI ChatGPT (6.66%), Tawk.to (6.16%) and Joinchat (5.92%). Only Re:amaze is a help desk. WhatsApp and Joinchat are click-to-chat buttons, and the OpenAI row counts a domain verification record. If you're replacing Help Scout, the shortlist is Zendesk, Freshdesk, Front, Gorgias and Intercom, and for the knowledge base alone, Zendesk Guide.

Expert Analysis: Help Scout Growth Trends & Key Signals for Sales Teams in 2026

I'm Emma Davies, a data analyst at TechnologyChecker.io, and I built this profile from our September 2026 crawl. We detect Help Scout on 6,161 websites, and 3,621 of them match a company record. Help Scout says more than 12,000 customer-facing teams use its products, on its About page. The gap is expected. Help Scout's core product is a shared inbox that lives behind a login, and a crawler only sees the two parts a company publishes: Beacon, the help and chat widget, and Docs, the hosted knowledge base. Our write-up on technology detection methods explains how a script on a page becomes a detection.
What the count is, and what it isn't
Before trusting the number I wanted to know whether the pages run Help Scout at all. We loaded samples of detected sites in a headless browser, and 64 of the 74 pages that loaded showed a working Beacon. Six of the ten misses were for-sale domains, and that is the one real contaminant: 435 domains (7.1%) are premium domains for sale. Most redirect to an Efty lander, and Efty's page runs Efty's own Beacon. The detection is correct, but the buyer is the marketplace. Those domains stay in the 6,161 and are out of the named list and the stack below.
Domains aren't accounts either. Where the Beacon ID was readable in page source, 2,998 domains resolved to 2,569 accounts. RealtyNinja's agent sites share one Beacon across 22 domains, and Optel Group runs one across four.
Growth trajectory
The chart climbs from 4,368 domains in June 2026 to 6,161 in September. Most of that is our side. The set of domains we crawl turns over every month, with dead sites dropping out and new ones added, and our detection signals widen: 1,358 of today's live domains (22.07%) were first seen in August or September, and the parked domains alone added 145 in July. August to September moved by only 34 domains, which is the steadier reading.
The sidebar's figure of 1,489 dropped detections since we began tracking in March 2026 isn't churn either. 57.1% of them were seen only once, and at least 70 were parked domains that moved from one marketplace lander to another.
"The shared inbox is Help Scout's product, and no crawler will ever see it. What we can count is the widget and the help site a company chose to publish, which is why 6,161 is a floor, not a market size." - Emma Davies, Data Analyst at TechnologyChecker.io
Sales Signal: Don't prospect on a growth story. Prospect on the installed base: a site running Beacon has a support team answering from a shared inbox today.
Customer profile
This is a small-company tool. Of matched companies with a size on record, 57.44% have 1 to 10 employees and 31.89% have 11 to 50. Only 26 have more than 1,000 staff. On age, 73.86% were founded in 2010 or later, and firms from before 2000 make up 10.68%.
The larger names are real but untypical. Hillman loads Beacon on www.hillmangroup.com and Dayton Freight on tools.daytonfreight.com. Five companies from Help Scout's own customer stories appear in our crawl: Buffer, Threadless, OnePageCRM, Mabel's Labels and Freightzy. Others it features, such as Litmus, don't load Help Scout on the pages we crawl, which is expected when the main product is private.
Sales Signal: The core buyer is a team of a few people handling support by email, often in a software company. They chose Help Scout for simplicity, so pitch time saved, not more configuration.
Industry and geographic concentration
Software Development leads at 14.94%, and with Technology, Information and Internet (9.92%) and IT Services and IT Consulting (5.49%) tech makes up 30.35%. Below that no industry passes 3.5%, from Retail (3.48%) to Wellness and Fitness Services (3.04%). The United States leads with 1,771 matched companies, then the UK (372), Canada (206) and Australia (187). Together those four hold 2,536. The Netherlands, Germany, France and Sweden add 300.
Sales Signal: English-language copy covers most of this base. Outside tech, the base is spread thin across many small verticals, so segment by company size and role rather than by industry.
Why there is no migration table
Of the switching patterns between Help Scout and other support tools, only one passed our thresholds: Help Scout to Intercom, 89 domains. It fell apart on inspection. 70 of the 89 now redirect to a different domain marketplace, Atom, whose lander runs Intercom. Those are for-sale domains changing brokers, not companies changing help desks. What's left is roughly 13 to 19 real domains, too few to publish. Zendesk, HubSpot Chat and Gorgias showed smaller flows that failed the same tests.
"The only switching pattern in the data was a domain broker moving its portfolio. I'd rather publish no migration table than one that tells you customers are leaving Help Scout for Intercom when they aren't." - Emma Davies, Data Analyst at TechnologyChecker.io
Sales Signal: With no measurable churn, a competitive pitch against Help Scout has to start from a feature gap the buyer already feels, such as reporting, not from a switching trend.
Technology ecosystem
Across 5,718 domains (parked ones excluded), WordPress runs on 31.13%, Shopify on 15.22%, Webflow on 6.58% and WooCommerce on 7.31%. Klaviyo (11.21%), HubSpot (10.27%) and Mailchimp (9.60%) cover marketing. Sentry sits on 20.11% and Stripe on 12.94%, both signs of a software-product base. A second support widget is rare: HubSpot Chat 1.24%, Intercom 0.94%, Tawk.to 0.44%, Gorgias 0.38%, Crisp 0.31% and Tidio 0.28%.
Sales Signal: No other chat tool we measured reaches 1.5% of these sites, so Beacon is the support widget. Integrations that sell here plug into Help Scout itself, or into the Shopify stores (15.22%) and HubSpot users (10.27%) in the base.
G2 review signals
Help Scout rates 4.4 out of 5 from 431 G2 reviews. Praise centres on ease of use: 14 mentions for the interface and 11 for being very easy to use, with responsive support and the knowledge base at 7 each. All five cons are about missing or limited features, 30 mentions between them, with reporting and customization named most.
Our data lines up with both sides. A base that is 89.33% companies of 50 or fewer staff values an inbox that needs no admin, and it's also the base that eventually asks for deeper reporting. The crawl can't show that frustration turning into switching, though. As the section above explains, there's no real outflow to measure yet.
Sales Signal: Reporting and analytics add-ons meet a complaint these users already make in public, and they don't require anyone to leave Help Scout.
Key takeaways
1. The count is a floor: 6,161 sites with Beacon or Docs, against Help Scout's own figure of more than 12,000 teams.
2. 7.1% is parked domains for sale, kept in the total and out of every list.
3. The buyer is small: 89.33% have 50 staff or fewer, and 73.86% were founded in 2010 or later.
4. The category rank is a widget rank: #36 of 408 among chat tools, not a help desk ranking.
5. No switching trend exists in the data, and the one apparent corridor was domains changing brokers.
Sales applications
Outreach template: "I saw you answer customers through Help Scout's Beacon on [site]. Teams your size usually hit [specific reporting or workflow limit] next. Worth 15 minutes?" Targeting strategy: on TechnologyChecker.io, filter Help Scout to Software Development, 11 to 200 employees, in the US, UK or Canada, then add Stripe or HubSpot to find software teams that bill customers online or run inbound marketing. Competitive angle: if you sell another help desk, look for Help Scout sites that also run a second chat tool. They are few, but they are the ones already splitting support across products.
Every figure above comes from our own crawl and enrichment: 6,161 Help Scout domains and 3,621 matched companies. Filter the list by country, industry and company size on TechnologyChecker.io.
Frequently Asked Questions
Who uses Help Scout?
Our crawl finds Help Scout on 6,161 websites. Named customers include Hillman, Usborne, Obsidian Entertainment, Buffer, Honey and Hushmail, and two companies from Help Scout's own customer stories, Threadless and OnePageCRM, show up in our crawl too. Most are small: 57.44% of matched companies have 1 to 10 staff, and software and internet firms make up 30.35%.
How many customers does Help Scout have?
Help Scout says more than 12,000 customer-facing teams use it. Our September 2026 crawl finds its Beacon widget or a Docs site on 6,161 websites, and 3,621 of them match a company record. Treat that as a floor, since the shared inbox leaves no public trace. It isn't a count of accounts either: 435 of the domains are parked for sale.
What is Help Scout's market share?
On TechnologyChecker.io, Help Scout holds 0.20% of Live Chat & Messaging and ranks #36 of 408. That ranks Beacon among chat widgets, a table led by WhatsApp click-to-chat links. As a help desk, Help Scout competes with Zendesk, Freshdesk, Front, Gorgias and Intercom, which we detect on different signals, so we don't publish a like-for-like share against them.
What are the best alternatives to Help Scout?
Other help desks and shared inboxes. Zendesk and Freshdesk suit teams that want heavier ticketing and more channels, Front is the closest shared-inbox rival, Gorgias is built for Shopify stores, and Intercom leads with chat and AI agents. Crisp, Tidio and LiveChat are chat-first and cover Beacon's chat side more than the inbox. The chat tools atop our category table, like WhatsApp buttons, aren't substitutes.
Which countries use Help Scout the most?
United States leads with 1,771 matched Help Scout domains, followed by United Kingdom (372), Canada (206), Australia (187), Netherlands (93). These are counts within the 3,621 domains we could match to a company record, not the full detected base.
What size companies use Help Scout?
The most common company size is 1-10 employees, representing 57.44% of the Help Scout domains we could match to a company record and size — a subset of 3,621 matched companies, not of all 6,161 detected domains. This is followed by 11-50 employees (31.89%) and 51-200 employees (7.92%).
How old are companies that use Help Scout?
Among the Help Scout domains we could match to a company with a known founding date, the largest group was founded in the 2010s (53.4%), followed by the 2020s (20.46%). That matched subset is drawn from 3,621 companies and is not representative of all 6,161 detected domains. This suggests Help Scout is most popular among relatively young companies.
What is the ideal customer profile for Help Scout?
The ideal Help Scout customer is: Company Size: 1-10 employees (57.44%), Location: US, UK, Canada or Australia, Founded: 2010 or later (73.86%), Industry: Software and internet companies, Deployment: Beacon widget on the main website — based on our analysis of 3,621 enriched companies at TechnologyChecker.io.
How much does Help Scout cost?
Per helpscout.com/pricing on September 26, 2026, paid plans cost $25 (Standard), $45 (Plus) and $75 (Pro) per user per month when billed annually. Monthly billing costs more, and Pro needs at least 10 users. The Free plan covers 5 users, 1 Inbox, 1 Docs site and 100 contacts a month. AI Answers is billed separately at $0.75 per resolution.
What is Help Scout used for?
Answering customer email as a team. Help Scout gives support staff a shared inbox where conversations are assigned, tagged and answered. It adds Docs for a public knowledge base and Beacon, a widget that puts help articles, a contact form and live chat on a website. Paid plans also bring in SMS, WhatsApp, Instagram and Messenger conversations.
What are the key differences between Help Scout and Zendesk?
Help Scout is email-first: a shared inbox that reads like ordinary email, priced per user from $25 a month on annual billing, with Docs and Beacon included. Zendesk is a larger ticketing suite with more channels, deeper workflow rules and a big app marketplace, and it takes more setup. On G2, Help Scout's most common complaint is missing features, which is the gap Zendesk fills.
Is Help Scout legit?
Yes. Help Scout was founded in 2011, launched through Techstars Boston, and says more than 12,000 customer-facing teams use it. It rates 4.4 out of 5 from 431 reviews on G2. Our crawl confirms the install base independently: when we loaded a sample of detected sites in a browser, 64 of the 74 pages that loaded showed a working Help Scout Beacon.
Who founded Help Scout?
Nick Francis, Jared McDaniel and Denny Swindle founded Help Scout in 2011. It grew out of their web design firm, Brightwurks, and launched through Techstars Boston. Help Scout now runs as a fully remote team spread across more than 115 cities, per its About page. Its customers skew young too: 73.86% of matched companies in our crawl were founded in 2010 or later.
How can you tell if a website uses Help Scout?
Look for Beacon. The page requests a script from beacon-v2.helpscout.net and defines a global Beacon function, and visitors usually see a round help button in a corner. A Help Scout Docs site loads its style sheet from helpscout.net assets and often sits on a help. or docs. subdomain. Both are what our crawl detects. The inbox itself leaves nothing public.
Why are parked domains counted as Help Scout sites?
Because some domain marketplaces use Help Scout. 435 of the 6,161 domains (7.1%) are premium domains for sale, mostly redirecting to Efty landers that load the marketplace's own Beacon. The detection is real, but the Help Scout customer is the marketplace, not the domain. We keep those domains in the total and leave them out of the named list and the tech stack.
Do Help Scout customers also use other live chat tools?
Rarely. Across 5,718 Help Scout domains, parked ones excluded, HubSpot Chat appears on 1.24%, Intercom on 0.94%, Tawk.to on 0.44%, Gorgias on 0.38%, Crisp on 0.31% and Tidio on 0.28%. Beacon already includes live chat, so for most of these companies it's the only support widget on the site. A second chat tool usually means a sales chat running beside support.
Is one Help Scout website one customer?
Not always. Where we could read the Beacon ID in the page source, 2,998 domains resolved to 2,569 Help Scout accounts, about 1.17 domains per account. The largest single Beacon runs across 22 real estate agent sites built by RealtyNinja. Optel Group shares one Beacon across four of its domains. So 6,161 domains means fewer than 6,161 customers.
Where do companies put Help Scout on their websites?
Mostly on the main site. Of 5,718 Help Scout domains outside the parked set, 4,010 load it on the apex or www host. The rest sit on subdomains: help. (430), app. (294), support. (275) and docs. (80) lead. The app. hosts mean Beacon inside a logged-in product, which is common among the software companies that make up most of the base.
