Companies Using Perl
Our October 2026 crawl finds 3,447 domains whose web server names Perl, almost always an Apache banner such as Apache/2.4.62 (Rocky Linux) OpenSSL/3.5.8 mod_perl/2.0.12 Perl/v5.32.1, plus a few Mojolicious and Dancer apps. Below is the list of companies that use Perl in that sense, with size, country, industry and stack. The banner proves Apache loaded mod_perl. It doesn't prove the site is written in Perl: 1,971 of these domains also run PHP, and WordPress shows on 30.49%.
Hosts and bundles write much of it. In a random 535-domain sample, 79 (14.77%) carried the bundled-stack banner of XAMPP-style installs, 59 (11.03%) sat on one hosting network, Brownrice Internet, and 20 were German chimney sweeps' websites built from one template on a single old Debian server; 141 domains carry that template's title. The named organisations are mostly universities and research institutes running Perl applications such as EPrints repositories.
Perl ranks 6th of 13 in Programming Languages with 0.06%, behind PHP, Java, CFML, Python and Dart. We removed 104 French for-sale pages before counting, as the note at the end of this page explains.

Perl Usage Statistics
One point: 3,447 live domains in October 2026, counted without the for-sale pages described at the end of this page. We don't chart earlier months because they were counted before that cleaning. Even from here the counts won't be a like-for-like series: the set of domains we crawl turns over every month, with dead sites dropping out and newly found ones added, and our detection signals widen over time. Exits we can count: 369 domains dropped the banner on at least one hostname since 16 March 2026, and 59 of those still send it from another hostname.

Which Countries Use Perl the Most?
Which countries use Perl the most? The United States, with 640 of the 1,698 companies we matched (37.69%), then Germany (168), India (71), Canada (62) and France (56). Germany's figure includes chimney sweeps' websites on one shared server. The US list mixes universities with small businesses in New Mexico and Colorado, where one host, Brownrice Internet, serves Perl-labelled Apache for its customers.
Share of the 1,698 Perl domains we matched to a company record — 49.3% of the 3,447 we detect. Top 15 countries shown, so these do not sum to 100%. Domains with no matching company record are not represented here and skew small and independent.
Perl Market Share Among Programming Languages
What is Perl's market share? 0.06% of Programming Languages, 6th of 13, on the cleaned count at TechnologyChecker.io. PHP leads with 5,317,281 domains (97.41%), and Java, CFML, Python and Dart sit between it and Perl. The share counts servers that print Perl in their Server header, so it measures Apache builds that load mod_perl and say so, not how much Perl code runs on the web.
Top Competitors by Market Share
Perl Customers by Company Size & Age
What size companies use Perl? Small ones: 58.79% of matched companies with a known size have 1 to 10 employees (863 of 1,468) and 20.37% have 11 to 50. 57 have more than 1,000 staff (3.88%), mainly universities and research bodies. For the small firms the banner is usually the host's Apache build, and the site itself is often WordPress or PHP.
Company Size Distribution
Company Age (Founded Decade)
The largest founding decades are the 2010s (25.61%) and the 2000s (23.45%), with the 1990s at 18.56%. Perl's base is middle-aged: only 7.34% date from the 2020s, and 7.48% predate 1960, largely universities. 695 of the 1,698 matched companies list a founding year.
What Industries Use Perl the Most?
IT services lead at 6.4%, then real estate (4.8%), higher education (4.12%), software development (3.96%) and retail (3.96%), based on our enriched company data. Real estate's place is a platform effect: brokerage sites built on Terabitz, a real-estate website platform, answer with a mod_perl banner. No industry passes 6.4%, so the row has no single vertical.
Universities using Perl are the most recognisable group: Rutgers runs its URL shortener on mod_perl, and Liverpool John Moores and OCAD run EPrints research repositories. Real estate brokers on Perl-labelled servers include Century 21 Select Real Estate and Coldwell Banker Select, both on Terabitz. Companies running Perl apps include RectorSeal, whose partner portal answers as Mojolicious.
Perl Alternatives & Competitors
Perl's rivals in this table are other server languages that name themselves. PHP (97.41%) is counted from headers, cookies and .php addresses, Java (1.66%) and CFML (0.37%) from session cookies, and Python (0.12%) from a Server banner like Perl's. Overlap with PHP is the norm here: 1,971 domains run Perl and PHP today, often in one banner, and 317 run Perl and Python.
Perl Customer Migration
Tech Stack of Perl-Powered Websites
Across the 3,447 clean domains, Apache HTTP Server answers on 96.34% and mod_perl on 95.94%; OpenSSL shows on 91.85%. WordPress runs on 30.49% and Elementor on 6.41%, the PHP sites behind those Perl-labelled servers. Mojolicious appears on 2.81%. GoDaddy's 14.82% is mostly DNS: 81 of a random 535 cleaned domains use its nameservers.

How We Counted Perl Sites
A domain counts here if its web server's Server header names Perl, as Apache does when it loads mod_perl and as Mojolicious and Perl Dancer do, or if a page carries the search form of the Discus forum script. Our raw count was 3,553 live domains, and our title filter removed 2 for-sale and gambling pages.
We then removed 104 domains listed for sale on French-language landing pages titled "... est en vente", a wording our title filter didn't recognise. 98 were caught by their stored titles and 6 more among untitled domains we loaded on 16 October 2026. Most sit on OVH servers whose Apache build loads mod_perl, which is why they matched. For-sale pages are left out of every count on this site, so this closes a gap in the title filter; it isn't a judgement on whether the sites answer.
Every chart and table on this page uses the remaining 3,447. The 0.06% share and 6th place are computed on that figure against the category's published total. We chart only October 2026 because earlier monthly totals were counted before the cleaning.
Expert Analysis: Perl Growth Trends & Key Signals for Sales Teams in 2026

I run the crawler that stores the response headers of every domain we visit, and Perl is the row where the header says the most about the server and the least about the site. A domain counts when its Server header names Perl, or when a page carries the Discus forum's search form. Our October 2026 crawl puts that at 3,447 domains after cleaning, 6th of 13 in Programming Languages, with 1,698 matched to a company. On 16 October 2026 I re-requested a random 15% of the domains, 554 of them, 535 of which survive the cleaning, and resolved every address to its network. Our guide to technology detection methods explains how header rules work.
What the banner means
95.94% of the clean domains run mod_perl, the Apache module that embeds a Perl interpreter, and Apache announces it with its version and Perl's. That is the whole signal for nearly every row: the server can run Perl. Whether the site does is a separate question. 1,971 of these domains also run PHP, and WordPress shows on 30.49%. The Discus clause adds nothing today; none of the sampled domains matched it.
Sales signal: read a Perl banner as an Apache build decision. The site owner may never have written a line of Perl.
Bundles and hosts write much of it
79 of the 535 cleaned sample domains (14.77%) have the shape of a bundled stack, a "(Unix)" Apache listing OpenSSL, PHP, mod_perl and Perl in one line. 20 of them carry Perl 5.34.1 with mod_perl 2.0.12, the pairing in XAMPP 8.2.12 for Linux, the last Linux build Apache Friends published; the rest have the same shape with older versions. Then come hosts. 59 of the 535 (11.03%) resolved to Brownrice Internet's network, and 58 of those sent the same "codeit" Apache build with mod_perl: law offices, ski shops and charities, mostly in New Mexico and Colorado. 20 more were German chimney sweeps' websites from one template, all on one IP address and answering with an Apache 2.2.9 banner from Debian 5. Across the clean set, 141 domains carry that template's title.
"More than a quarter of Perl's web footprint is someone else's Apache build: a bundle, a regional host, a template server for chimney sweeps." - David Thomson, CTO at TechnologyChecker.io
Sales signal: for clustered rows the decision-maker is the host or template provider. One conversation there reaches dozens of domains.
Platforms and real Perl applications
Real estate shows up because of one platform: 21 cleaned sample domains were brokerage sites, and all 9 that I opened referenced Terabitz, a real-estate website platform, including Century 21 Select Real Estate and Coldwell Banker Select. Actual Perl applications are a smaller, more valuable group: EPrints repositories at Liverpool John Moores and OCAD, Mojolicious on 2.81% of the clean set, including RectorSeal's partner portal, and Perl Dancer at ISTA's Research Explorer.
Sales signal: repository, research and portal teams running EPrints or Mojolicious are the buyers for Perl skills, support and hosting.
How much of it is current
487 of the 535 cleaned domains (91.03%) still sent a Perl banner on 16 October 2026. 24 didn't answer, 10 returned an error and 4 showed placeholder or default pages. Before any of this, we removed 104 French domains listed for sale, titled "est en vente" and mostly on OVH, which our title filter had missed. Since we began tracking on 16 March 2026, 369 domains dropped the banner on at least one hostname, and 59 of those still send it from another. We chart only October 2026, because earlier months predate the cleaning, and any month-to-month view mixes in our side: the set of domains we crawl turns over every month, dead sites out and newly found ones in, and our detection widens.
Sales signal: nine in ten rows are live servers you can contact.
Old versions in plain sight
Banners print versions, so age is visible. Of the 487 live banners, 148 (30.39%) announce Perl 5.16 and 54 come from Apache 2.2, a line the Apache project's httpd site declares end-of-life, with a final release, 2.2.34, in July 2017. Newer Perl 5.40 and 5.42 releases appear on current Debian and Fedora builds.
Sales signal: an Apache 2.2 banner is a public, dated maintenance problem. Hosting migrations and security reviews have an obvious opening.
Who and where
The United States holds 640 of the 1,698 matched companies (37.69%), Germany 168, India 71 and Canada 62. 58.79% of companies with a known size employ 1 to 10 people; 57 employ more than 1,000. IT services lead industries at 6.4%, real estate follows at 4.8% thanks to Terabitz, and higher education is 4.12%. The founding years cluster in the 2000s and 2010s.
Sales signal: treat universities separately. They run real Perl software and have the budgets; the rest of the list is a hosting market.
Overlap with other languages
We publish no switching rows for Perl. 1,971 domains run Perl and PHP today, and of the 2,197 that ran both at some point since March, 1,971 (89.7%) still do. 317 run Perl and Python, often one Apache banner listing mod_perl and mod_wsgi together.
"Perl and PHP on the same domain is almost always the same server. Nobody is migrating; the modules stay loaded." - David Thomson, CTO at TechnologyChecker.io
Sales signal: a banner with mod_perl, mod_wsgi and PHP is a server nobody has pruned. Consolidation is the pitch.
The stack around it
Across the 3,447 clean domains, Apache answers on 96.34%, OpenSSL shows on 91.85% and mod_ssl on 11.72%. WordPress runs on 30.49%, Elementor on 6.41% and Drupal on 2.44%. GoDaddy's 14.82% is mostly DNS: 81 of the 535 cleaned sample domains use its nameservers. The networks are mixed: Brownrice Internet 11.03% of the sample, Amazon 8.79%, Hetzner 8.41% and OVH 5.23%.
Sales signal: for nearly a third of the list, WordPress services fit better than anything Perl-specific.
Key takeaways
1. 3,447 domains name Perl in their Server header after cleaning; 91.03% of a random 535 still did on 16 October 2026.
2. 95.94% run mod_perl, and 1,971 also run PHP.
3. Bundles and hosts write much of the count: XAMPP-style stacks, Brownrice Internet, one chimney-sweep template.
4. The real Perl applications are EPrints repositories, Mojolicious and Dancer apps.
How to use this list
Split it by banner: universities and research institutes for Perl services, clustered hosts for partnership deals, and the rest for hosting and WordPress offers. Perl itself is free, open-source software under the Artistic License or GPL, per perl.org. The full list of 3,447 domains, with 1,698 matched companies, is on TechnologyChecker.io.
Frequently Asked Questions
Who uses Perl?
On our data, universities and research institutes running Perl applications, such as Rutgers, Dartmouth College and the EPrints repositories of Liverpool John Moores and OCAD, plus a long tail of small businesses whose host's Apache loads mod_perl. Real-estate brokers on Terabitz, German chimney sweeps on one shared template and Brownrice Internet's customers are the biggest clusters.
How many customers does Perl have?
We count 3,447 domains whose Server header names Perl in October 2026, after removing 104 French for-sale pages that our title filter had missed. Those are domains, not customers. 1,698 match a company record, and in a random sample of 535 cleaned domains, 487 (91.03%) still sent a Perl banner on 16 October 2026.
What is Perl's market share?
Perl holds 0.06% of Programming Languages at TechnologyChecker.io, 6th of 13, behind PHP (97.41%), Java, CFML, Python and Dart. The figure counts servers that print Perl in their Server header, mostly Apache with mod_perl, so it measures self-announcing Perl servers rather than all Perl in use. Scripts run through plain CGI don't show at all.
What are the best alternatives to Perl?
Among server languages in our table, PHP identifies itself on 5,317,281 domains, Java on 90,494, CFML on 20,265 and Python on 6,438. For Perl itself, the overlap with PHP is large: 1,971 domains run both today, and 1,971 of the 2,197 that ever ran both since March still do, so we see shared servers rather than switching.
Which countries use Perl the most?
The United States, with 640 of the 1,698 companies we matched (37.69%), then Germany with 168, India with 71, Canada with 62 and France with 56. Germany's figure includes chimney sweeps' websites built from one template (141 domains carry its title, and the 20 we sampled all sat on one old Debian server), and the US list includes small businesses on Brownrice Internet's hosting in New Mexico and Colorado.
What size companies use Perl?
Mostly small ones. 58.79% of matched companies with a known size have 1 to 10 employees and 20.37% have 11 to 50. 57 of the 1,468 sized companies, 3.88%, have more than 1,000 staff, and those are mainly universities and research institutes that run a Perl application such as a repository, a URL shortener or a calendar.
How old are companies that use Perl?
Middle-aged. Among matched companies with a founding year, 25.61% started in the 2010s, 23.45% in the 2000s and 18.56% in the 1990s, while only 7.34% are from the 2020s. 7.48% predate 1960, mostly universities. 695 of the 1,698 matched companies list a founding year, so the chart describes the better-documented part of the base.
What is the ideal customer profile for Perl?
On our data, a US or German firm with 1 to 10 staff whose host's Apache loads mod_perl, running WordPress or PHP on top (1,971 domains run PHP too). A second, more valuable profile is the university or research institute running a real Perl application, such as an EPrints repository, on Red Hat-family Linux.
Does anyone use Perl anymore?
Yes, though fewer servers say so than you might expect. 3,447 domains named Perl in their Server header in our October 2026 crawl, and 91.03% of a random 535 still did on 16 October. Named users include Rutgers, Dartmouth College, Kyoto University and UF Health, alongside research repositories running EPrints.
Is Perl a dead language?
Not on the web servers we crawl, but much of what we see is old. Of 487 live Perl banners in our cleaned sample, 148 (30.39%) announce Perl 5.16 and 54 come from Apache 2.2, which the Apache project declares end-of-life. Newer releases such as Perl 5.40 and 5.42 appear too, mostly on current Debian and Fedora builds; the current release is 5.44, from July 2026.
Has Python replaced Perl?
Our data can't measure replacement, but it shows coexistence. Python names itself on 6,438 domains in October 2026 and Perl on 3,447, and 317 domains run both today, often one Apache banner listing mod_wsgi and mod_perl. Of the 356 domains that ran both at some point since March, 317 still do, so few are moving.
What applications use Perl?
On the servers we crawl: EPrints research repositories at universities such as Liverpool John Moores and OCAD, Mojolicious apps such as RectorSeal's partner portal, Dancer apps such as ISTA's Research Explorer, and mod_perl applications such as Rutgers' URL shortener. Our rule also checks for the Discus forum's search form, but no sampled domain matched it.
Is Perl CGI still used?
We can't see it. A Perl script run through plain CGI behind Apache leaves no Perl token in the Server header, so it doesn't reach this count. What we see is mod_perl, Perl embedded in Apache, on 95.94% of the clean domains, and a handful of standalone Perl servers: Mojolicious on 2.81% and Perl Dancer on a few more.
Is Perl free?
Yes. Perl.org describes Perl as open-source software, available under its Artistic License or the GNU General Public License. Our data adds one twist: many Perl banners come from bundled stacks. XAMPP 8.2.12 for Linux shipped Perl 5.34.1 with mod_perl 2.0.12, and 20 of our 535 cleaned sample domains answered with exactly that pairing.
Which Perl versions do websites run?
In 487 live Perl banners we sampled on 16 October 2026, Perl 5.16 led with 148 (30.39%), followed by Perl 5.32 and 5.26. mod_perl 2.0.11 and 2.0.12 are the most common module versions. Versions follow the server's Linux release or bundle, so they say more about upgrade habits than about Perl itself.
