Choose Wix if…
- You want to publish at $0 first and upgrade later; Squarespace has a 14-day trial, not a free plan
- Scheduling, bookings or a service business: Wix bundles scheduling into its plans from Core, where Squarespace offers it through Acuity Scheduling, a separate product
- Ease of use and setup come first: G2 reviewers score Wix 8.9 on both, against Squarespace's 8.8
Choose Squarespace if…
- You will sell products, courses, memberships or subscriptions from the start; every Squarespace plan includes commerce
- Code injection and an advanced code block are included from Core at $29 a month on annual billing, with one Google Workspace email seat free for the first year
- Support quality matters: G2 scores Squarespace 8.5 to Wix's 8.0, and Expensive (68 mentions) is Wix's second most cited complaint on G2
How we collect this data
Every number names its source and the date it was read.
746 domains dropped Wix and now run Squarespace in the 90 days to September 23, 2026, against 556 that went the other way: a 1.3 : 1 flow in Squarespace's favour on movement that is close to symmetric (TechnologyChecker, September 2026 crawl). Wix is still the larger platform, detected on 1,298,903 domains (8.72% of CMS platforms, position #2) to Squarespace's 1,018,293 (6.84%, #3), and both sit far behind WordPress. Neither is the other's main competitor: the profiles show each losing several times more domains to WordPress than to each other. Squarespace is the pick when a store or paid content is part of the plan from day one, because every tier sells and only Basic charges a 2% store fee; Wix is the pick when the site has to start at $0, or when scheduling should come inside the website plan: Wix bundles it from Core, while Squarespace offers it through Acuity Scheduling, a separate product. G2 reviewers rate Squarespace higher (4.4 to 4.2) with the widest gap on quality of support (8.5 to 8.0), while Wix leads on ease of use and ease of setup (8.9 to 8.8 on both).

25,248 domains have dropped Wix since we began tracking it in March 2026. Most go to WordPress.
Squarespace Basic is $25 a month, or $19 on annual billing, and carries a 2% online store fee that Core ($39, or $29 annual) removes. Wix lists a free plan and four paid tiers (Light, Core, Business, Business Elite), but its paid prices are not shown here: its plans page served a tax-inclusive regional variant on every fetch, including from a US exit, so the only Wix figure published is the free plan at $0. What else G2 puts on this comparison
| Product | Rating | Reviews | Largest segment |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google Workspace | 4.6 / 5 | 48,169 | Small-Business |
| WordPress.com | 4.4 / 5 | 2,716 | Small-Business |

2 of 3 shortlisted alternatives are where domains actually go. G2 puts Google Workspace, WordPress.com and Webflow beside this pair. Of those, WordPress.com and Webflow also appear among the technologies Wix leavers move to. The destinations we measure — WordPress, Webflow, GoDaddy Website Builder and Joomla — include GoDaddy Website Builder and Joomla, absent from G2's shortlist.
G2 scores features by category only when both products are rated on a shared feature set, and it publishes none for Wix and Squarespace. The feature table above is ours, read off each vendor's own pages.
G2 also publishes an AI-generated summary and a set of generated FAQs for this pair. We link rather than reproduce them — they are machine-written, we cannot verify the claims in them, and the verdict and FAQs on this page are the editor's. Read G2's own comparison →
Wix
What people like about Wix. Ease of use dominates the G2 topic counts (254 mentions), followed by easy creation (96), on a panel of 1,889 reviews. The ratings agree: Wix edges Squarespace on ease of use (8.9 to 8.8) and ease of setup (8.9 to 8.8), and G2's largest reviewer segment for both products is small business, which matches our profile data where 78.74% of Wix's enriched base are companies of 1 to 10 people.
What people do not like. Limited customization (72 mentions) and Expensive (68) are the two complaints, and both grow with the site: the free tier and Light are simple, and the constraints show once a business needs eCommerce, more collaborators or developer access, which the plans page places on Core, Business and Business Elite. Quality of support is Wix's lowest rating on the page (8.0 against Squarespace's 8.5).

Squarespace
What people like about Squarespace. Ease of use again (24 mentions) and templates (12), on a panel of 1,137 reviews, with G2's summary crediting design quality and professionalism. Squarespace leads Wix on five of the seven satisfaction criteria, with the largest gap on quality of support (8.5 to 8.0), then on being a good business partner (8.7 to 8.4). Git integration is the most cited integration in its reviews (23 mentions).
What people do not like. The same two labels as Wix at lower counts: limited customization (8) and Expensive (7), with poor customer support on 4 mentions. G2 tags far fewer Squarespace reviews with any topic (ease of use has 24 mentions against Wix's 254), so these counts do not show that Squarespace users complain less; the satisfaction scores are the better comparison.

The reviews lean Squarespace and the switching data leans the same way, but gently. 746 domains dropped Wix for Squarespace in the 90 days to September 23, 2026, against 556 going back: a 1.3 : 1 balance, not a rout, with 291 domains running both. G2's price and support complaints about Wix (68 Expensive mentions and a support score of 8.0) are consistent with the net 190 domains a quarter moving to Squarespace. The reviews do not explain why the return flow is still about three quarters the size of the forward flow. Both platforms lose far more domains to WordPress than to each other.

The number worth citing is the balance, not the direction. 746 domains moving from Wix to Squarespace and 556 moving back in one quarter is a net gain of 190 for Squarespace on bases of 1.3 million and 1.0 million domains, which is a rounding error for either business. Read this page as evidence that the two platforms serve the same buyer, small companies of 1 to 10 people, with business consulting and construction the two largest industries on both profiles, and that switching between them is cheap enough to happen in both directions.
The profile data says where the real competition is: Wix has lost 4,251 domains to WordPress and Squarespace 2,362, several times what they take from each other. A team choosing between these two is usually choosing a hosted builder over WordPress first, and only then picking a builder.
Where the crowd may be wrong: G2 rates Wix harder on price, but the only store transaction fee on either pricing page is the 2% on Squarespace Basic, and Squarespace has no free tier at all. The cheaper platform depends on whether you sell. Wix's paid prices are missing from this page because its plans page serves a tax-inclusive regional variant rather than US prices, so check them on wix.com before comparing.

Where this data comes from
September 2026 crawlOur detection dataFirst-party
The switching corridor, adoption curves, market shares and customer lists come from our own monthly crawl of 29.9M live business domains, detected across the full signal stack: HTTP headers, rendered DOM, JS globals, DNS, TLS and certificate transparency.
A switch is an observed change, not a survey answer: a domain dropped Wix on every host we track and now runs Squarespace. Counts are domains, not accounts. Company attributes (industry, employee band, country) come from the enriched samples named in each caption (1,096,571 companies for Wix, 679,978 for Squarespace).
Full detection methodology →The vendors' own pages
Pricing tables and the feature matrix are read from wix.com and squarespace.com, entered by hand and checked cell by cell by an editor. Every table names its source URL and the date it was verified.
A verification older than 90 days withdraws the page from search until an editor re-checks it, so a stale price cannot outrank a current one.

How many companies switched from Wix to Squarespace?
746 domains dropped Wix and now run Squarespace in the 90 days to September 23, 2026, against 556 that moved from Squarespace to Wix. Counts are domains, not companies or contracts, and a drop means the Wix signal disappeared from our crawl on every host we track.
Which is more widely used, Wix or Squarespace?
Wix, by about 1.3x: 1,298,903 detected domains and 8.72% of the CMS platforms category (position #2) against Squarespace's 1,018,293 and 6.84% (position #3), as of the August 2026 crawl. WordPress leads the category at 9,555,391.
Is Squarespace cheaper than Wix?
It depends on whether you sell. Squarespace has no free plan; Basic is $25 a month, or $19 on annual billing, and charges a 2% online store fee that Core ($39, or $29 annual) removes. Wix has a free plan on a wixsite.com address and four paid tiers; its plans page shows region-specific prices, so compare the USD figures on the day you buy.
Which is better for an online store, Wix or Squarespace?
Squarespace includes commerce on every plan and drops its store fee to 0% from Core, and it also sells courses, memberships and subscriptions on every tier. Wix adds payments and basic eCommerce from its Core plan and steps up to standard and advanced eCommerce on Business and Business Elite.
Why are people leaving Wix?
The G2 topic counts point at cost and flexibility: Expensive (68 mentions) and limited customization (72). Of the leavers with a detected destination, WordPress is by far the most common: the Wix profile's 90-day migration table shows 4,251 domains moving to WordPress, more than its other four listed destinations combined. That table uses the profile's own counting rule and window, so its figures are not comparable with this page's switching counts, and detection cannot tell self-hosted WordPress from WordPress.com.
Which is better for 2026, Wix or Squarespace?
The movement between them is close to even: 746 domains dropped Wix for Squarespace in the 90 days to September 23, 2026, and 556 went the other way. G2 reviewers rate Squarespace higher (4.4 to 4.2, ahead on five of seven criteria, widest on support at 8.5 to 8.0), while Wix leads on ease of use and ease of setup and is the larger platform at 1,298,903 domains to 1,018,293. Pick Squarespace if selling or paid content is the point, Wix if the site must start free or you want scheduling included in the plan.
Who is cheaper, Wix or Squarespace?
Wix is cheaper to start because it has a free plan; Squarespace's cheapest option is Basic at $25 a month, or $19 on annual billing, after a 14-day trial. For a store, Squarespace Core at $39 ($29 annual) has a 0% transaction fee, where Basic charges 2%. Wix's paid tiers (Light, Core, Business, Business Elite) are priced by region on its plans page, so check the USD figures directly. Prices were read from each vendor's own pricing page on September 23, 2026.
What is the downside of Wix?
In G2's own topic counts, the complaints are limited customization (72 mentions) and Expensive (68), and Wix's quality of support score (8.0) trails Squarespace's (8.5). On the plans page, payments, eCommerce and scheduling are listed from the Core plan up, and the advanced developer platform is listed on Business Elite.
What are the downsides of using Squarespace?
No free plan (a 14-day trial instead), a 2% online store fee and a 7% fee on digital content on the Basic plan, only 2 contributors on Basic, and code injection and Google Workspace email held back to Core and above. G2's complaint counts are small: limited customization (8 mentions) and Expensive (7) on 1,137 reviews.
What are the top 5 website builders?
By detected domains in our August 2026 crawl, the CMS platforms category ranks WordPress first (9,555,391 domains), then Wix (1,298,903), Squarespace (1,018,293), GoDaddy Website Builder and Webflow. Counts are domains where the platform is detected, not paying subscriptions.
