Companies Using DokuWiki
Our November 2026 crawl finds 1,688 domains running DokuWiki, the open-source PHP wiki that keeps its pages in files rather than a database. A domain counts when a page carries DokuWiki's generator meta tag, sets its DokuWiki session cookie or defines its DOKU_TPL script variable. Below is the list of companies using DokuWiki, with size, country, industry and stack.
The count credits the parent domain, and the wiki usually lives on a subdomain. In a random 40 domains we re-requested on 6 November 2026, 35 served DokuWiki and 22 ran it on a subdomain, 14 of them called wiki.. Among the 50 companies listed below, 49 do. Most installs belong to small software firms, clubs, schools and hackerspaces. Larger brands that use DokuWiki include Analog Devices on wiki.analog.com, CESNET and Daz 3D, and the PHP project runs its own wiki on it.
DokuWiki ranks 12th of 70 rows in Documentation & Knowledge Base with 0.91%. Zendesk's help centres hold 61.71% of that category, so the share compares very different products.

DokuWiki Usage Statistics
The line reads 727 domains in June 2026, 1,159 in July, 1,545 in August, 1,691 in September, 1,705 in October and 1,704 in November, flat since September. Most of the climb is our crawl, not new wikis: the set of domains we crawl turns over every month, with dead sites dropping out and newly found ones added, and our detection signals widen over time, so this isn't a same-domain series. The chart uses the raw monthly counts; the for-sale and gambling removals are under 1% and don't change its shape. Since tracking began on 16 March 2026, 137 domains dropped DokuWiki from every hostname.

Which Countries Use DokuWiki the Most?
Which countries use DokuWiki the most? Germany, with 158 of the 521 companies we matched, well ahead of the United States (87), France (30), the United Kingdom (26) and the Netherlands (19). Switzerland has 12 and Austria 11, so the three German-speaking countries hold 181, about a third of the matched list. German clubs, a school, an engineering office and a hackerspace turned up in our random sample too.
Share of the 521 DokuWiki domains we matched to a company record — 30.9% of the 1,688 we detect. Top 15 countries shown, so these do not sum to 100%. Domains with no matching company record are not represented here and skew small and independent.
DokuWiki Market Share Among Documentation & Knowledge Base
What is DokuWiki's market share? 0.91% of Documentation & Knowledge Base, 12th of 70 rows, on the cleaned 1,688 domains at TechnologyChecker.io. The category mixes help desks, PDF tools, API references and wikis: Zendesk takes 61.71% and Foxit 5.11%. Among wiki and docs engines, MediaWiki has 6,487 domains (3.48%), Docusaurus 6,424 and GitBook 6,309, while MkDocs (2,405) sits just above DokuWiki and Sphinx (1,356) just below.
Top Competitors by Market Share
DokuWiki Customers by Company Size & Age
What size companies use DokuWiki? Small ones. 66.97% of matched companies with a known size have 1 to 10 employees and 19.68% have 11 to 50. Only 6 have more than 1,000 staff (3 with 1,001 to 5,000, 2 with 5,001 to 10,000 and 1 above that). The large ones run it on one subdomain for documentation, as Analog Devices does on wiki.analog.com.
Company Size Distribution
Company Age (Founded Decade)
Mostly established firms. Of matched companies with a founding year, 37.12% started in the 2010s, 22.27% in the 2000s and 16.16% in the 1990s, and only 9.17% in the 2020s. 15.28% predate 1990, a group that includes research institutes, a county office and engineering firms. DokuWiki itself is old too: the copyright line in its source code starts in 2004.
What Industries Use DokuWiki the Most?
Software Development leads at 26.7%, then IT Services and IT Consulting (23.56%) and Information Technology & Services (9.95%), so about 60% of matched companies are in software or IT, based on our enriched company data. Civic and Social Organizations come fourth at 9.42%: clubs, associations and hackerspaces, the same kind of site that fills our random sample.
Software companies using DokuWiki mostly publish manuals and knowledge bases on it: Feng Office, Ispirer, VAS Experts and Cloudbase Solutions all serve their docs from DokuWiki. Hardware makers on DokuWiki do the same, including Meinberg's knowledge base, Pangolin's help docs and Two Notes' user manuals. Universities and public bodies using DokuWiki include CESNET, Romania's Military Technical Academy and the audit court of the Brazilian state of Goiás, based on our enriched company data.
DokuWiki Alternatives & Competitors
DokuWiki's real rivals in this table are other wiki and docs engines, not the help desks at the top. MediaWiki (6,487 domains, 3.48%) is the other self-hosted PHP wiki. Docusaurus (3.45%) and MkDocs (2,405 domains) build static docs sites from Markdown files, and GitBook (3.39%) hosts docs as a service. They do the job many company DokuWiki installs do on a docs. subdomain. Zendesk's 61.71% is help-centre software, a different purchase, based on our market share data at TechnologyChecker.io.

DokuWiki Customer Migration
We publish one switching pair. 6 domains dropped DokuWiki while adding MediaWiki since tracking began on 16 March 2026, 3 of them in the last 30 days and 5 in the last 90. No move in the other direction reached the three-domain floor we publish at. Counts are domains, and 6 is small next to 1,688, so read it as a few teams changing wiki engine, not a trend.

Tech Stack of DokuWiki-Powered Websites
Across the 1,688 clean domains, jQuery shows on 98.1% and jQuery UI on 96.45% because DokuWiki ships both in its core and serves them itself unless an admin switches to a CDN. Bootstrap (35.19%) comes partly from templates: 6 of the 35 live wikis in our sample used the Bootstrap3 template, while 18 kept the default one. Apache (42%) and Nginx (38.27%) split the web servers. PHP shows on only 37.03% because we see it only when a server names it in a header, though DokuWiki is written in PHP.

Expert Analysis: DokuWiki Growth Trends & Key Signals for Sales Teams in 2026

I run the crawler, and DokuWiki is an easy rule to trust: a DokuWiki page names itself in its generator meta tag and sets a cookie called DokuWiki. Our November 2026 crawl counts 1,688 domains after removing 10 for-sale and gambling pages, and 521 of them match a company. On 6 November 2026 I re-requested a random 40.
What the sample showed
35 of 40 served DokuWiki, all with both the tag and the cookie. Two sat behind bot checks, one didn't answer, and one returned a PHP fatal error from the wiki's own code, an old install on a newer PHP. 22 of the 40 ran on a subdomain, 14 of them on wiki., and our count credits the parent domain.
Sales signal: a DokuWiki domain is a documentation or community site. Talk to whoever owns that subdomain, not to the main website's team.
Wikis nobody named
Two titles look unfinished: start [] on 10 domains, where nobody set a wiki name, and start [My Wiki] on 8. Together that's 18 domains, 1.07% of the count. Four wikis in my sample had a default-style name. Two were live, one of them a hardware project's full programming manual. Two were empty: the "My Wiki" install still said "This topic does not exist yet", and a "My DokuWiki" install had a one-character start page edited from an anonymous address. They stay in the count because DokuWiki does run there.
"A blank wiki name doesn't mean a dead wiki. Half the default-named installs I opened were live sites with real content." - David Thomson, CTO at TechnologyChecker.io
Sales signal: drop start [My Wiki] titles from a prospect list. The one in our sample had never had a page written.
Who runs it
Germany has 158 of the 521 matched companies, against 87 for the United States. 66.97% of matched companies with a known size have 1 to 10 employees, and software and IT firms make up about 60%. The larger names keep docs on a subdomain: Analog Devices on wiki.analog.com, Meinberg's knowledge base and CESNET's videoconferencing documentation.
Sales signal: filter for wiki., docs. and kb. subdomains at firms with 11 or more staff. That's where DokuWiki holds product documentation that someone maintains.
Movement
Since 16 March 2026, 137 domains dropped DokuWiki from every hostname, and our crawled set turns over each month, so that's turnover as much as churn. The one switching pair is small: 6 domains moved to MediaWiki, 3 of them in the last 30 days.
Sales signal: six moves since March isn't a migration market. The installs that stay are the audience.
Frequently Asked Questions
Who uses DokuWiki?
Mostly small software and IT firms, clubs, schools and hackerspaces, on a wiki or docs subdomain. 66.97% of matched companies have 1 to 10 employees, and Software Development (26.7%) and IT Services (23.56%) lead the industries. Larger users include Analog Devices on wiki.analog.com, CESNET, Daz 3D and Meinberg, all of which served DokuWiki when we checked on 6 November 2026.
How many customers does DokuWiki have?
Our November 2026 crawl counts 1,688 domains running DokuWiki after removing 10 for-sale and gambling pages, and 521 match a company. They are domains, not customers: DokuWiki is free software. Since tracking began on 16 March 2026, 137 domains dropped it from every hostname. In a random 40 we checked on 6 November, 35 served it.
What is DokuWiki's market share?
DokuWiki holds 0.91% of Documentation & Knowledge Base at TechnologyChecker.io, 12th of 70 rows, on 1,688 cleaned domains. Zendesk's help centres take 61.71% and Foxit 5.11%, so the share compares unlike products. Among wiki and docs engines it sits behind MediaWiki (6,487 domains), Docusaurus, GitBook and MkDocs, and ahead of Sphinx (1,356).
What are the best alternatives to DokuWiki?
The like-for-like choice is MediaWiki, another self-hosted PHP wiki, with 6,487 domains in our crawl; 6 domains moved from DokuWiki to it since 16 March 2026. Teams writing product docs also use static site generators such as Docusaurus (6,424 domains) and MkDocs (2,405), or a hosted service such as GitBook (6,309).
Which countries use DokuWiki the most?
Germany, with 158 of the 521 companies we matched, well ahead of the United States (87), France (30), the United Kingdom (26) and the Netherlands (19). Germany, Switzerland and Austria together hold 181, about a third of the matched list. Most of the rest is Western Europe, with Brazil, Poland and India at 9 each.
What size companies use DokuWiki?
Small ones. 66.97% of matched companies with a known size have 1 to 10 employees and 19.68% have 11 to 50. Only 6 have more than 1,000 staff, and those run DokuWiki on one subdomain for documentation, as Analog Devices does on wiki.analog.com.
How old are companies that use DokuWiki?
Mostly established. Of matched companies with a founding year, 37.12% started in the 2010s, 22.27% in the 2000s and 16.16% in the 1990s, while only 9.17% were founded in the 2020s. 15.28% predate 1990, a group that includes research institutes, a county office and engineering firms keeping documentation on a wiki.
What is the ideal customer profile for DokuWiki?
On our data: a software or IT firm with 1 to 10 staff, in Germany, the US or France, founded in the 2010s, running DokuWiki on a wiki., docs. or kb. subdomain for product docs or an internal knowledge base, on Apache or Nginx. A second profile is clubs, schools and hackerspaces using it as their community wiki.
What is DokuWiki used for?
Documentation and community wikis. In our random sample of 40 domains, the live installs were product manuals, knowledge bases, school and club wikis, hackerspace wikis and personal notes. Among the 50 companies we list, 49 run it on a subdomain such as wiki., docs., kb. or help., which points to documentation kept apart from the main website.
Is DokuWiki free?
Yes. DokuWiki's download page says it is available free of charge under the GNU General Public License Version 2. The current stable release is 2026-07-14c "Mort", published on GitHub on 2 September 2026, and the older 2025-05-14b "Librarian" line is still offered. The same page notes that hosting partners offer DokuWiki pre-installed.
Does DokuWiki need a database?
No. DokuWiki's default configuration stores everything as files in a data folder, with pages under data/pages, instead of in a database. You can see it on live sites, where the page footer names the file, such as start.txt. MediaWiki is the opposite: its installation manual says it needs a database server to store pages and data.
Is DokuWiki safe?
It depends mostly on whether the install is kept current. DokuWiki ships point releases on its stable line: "Mort" had three on GitHub, dated 22 July, 11 August and 2 September 2026. In our 6 November sample, 1 of 40 domains returned a PHP fatal error from wiki code too old for its server's PHP, the clearest sign of an install nobody maintains.
What is the difference between DokuWiki and MediaWiki?
Both are free PHP wikis. DokuWiki stores pages as files and needs no database, while MediaWiki, per its installation manual, needs a database server. On our data MediaWiki is larger, 6,487 domains against DokuWiki's 1,688, and 6 domains moved from DokuWiki to MediaWiki since 16 March 2026, 3 of them in the last 30 days.
