Companies Using OpenResty
OpenResty is Nginx bundled with LuaJIT and a set of Lua modules, and our October 2026 crawl finds 763,880 domains whose web server names it in the Server header, after we removed 236,436 parking, for-sale and error pages. The header comes from whichever server builds the response, so on many sites it belongs to a hosting platform, a careers-site vendor or a proxy rather than a server the owner chose. Below is the list of companies that use OpenResty, with size, country and industry. It includes BP, Lenovo, CERN, Huawei's automotive site and nine US universities whose sites are hosted on CampusPress.
OpenResty ranks 4th of the 70 technologies we track in Web Servers, with 5.28% on the cleaned count, behind Apache, Nginx and LiteSpeed. The cleaning mattered far more here than for its rivals: 23.6% of the raw OpenResty count was parking redirects and similar pages, against 1.8% for Nginx and 0.24% for Apache. How we counted is explained at the end of this page.

OpenResty Usage Statistics
We count 763,880 OpenResty domains in October 2026, after removing 236,436 parking, for-sale, error and gambling pages. That cleaned figure exists for one month only, so there's no trend chart here. Our raw monthly counts, which include those pages, start at 683,481 in June and reach 967,927 in July. That jump reflects changes on our side rather than a surge in adoption: the set of domains we crawl turns over every month, with dead sites dropping out and newly found ones added, and our detection signals widen over time. Since we began tracking it in March 2026, 674,630 domains have dropped the header, counted on the raw set with parked domains included, and about 2% of them still show OpenResty on another hostname.

Which Countries Use OpenResty the Most?
Which countries use OpenResty the most? The United States, with 99,771 matched companies, then the United Kingdom (21,124), Germany (17,549), the Netherlands (12,855) and India (11,096). Two smaller countries stand out: Czechia (7,667) ranks 9th and Slovakia (5,673) 15th, and neither is in the top 15 on our Nginx or LiteSpeed profiles. In our sample, sites hosted by the Slovak host Websupport and stores on the Czech platform Shoptet answered with OpenResty. China (6,994) is 10th; Taobao and Yahoo! China sponsored OpenResty's early development, per its about page. These counts cover the 341,117 domains we matched to a company.
Share of the 341,117 OpenResty domains we matched to a company record — 44.7% of the 763,880 we detect. Top 15 countries shown, so these do not sum to 100%. Domains with no matching company record are not represented here and skew small and independent.
OpenResty Market Share Among Web Servers
What is OpenResty's market share? 5.28% of Web Servers, 4th of the 70 technologies we track there, on the cleaned count at TechnologyChecker.io. Apache (5,365,858 domains, 37.12%) and Nginx (5,101,407, 35.29%) hold about 72% between them, and LiteSpeed has 2,471,028 (17.1%). OpenResty's 763,880 is about 1.8 times IIS's 434,800 and far ahead of Caddy (68,037). Every share in the table is computed on the same cleaned category total. The parking filter took at most 2.7% from any rival, too little to change their published counts or any rank.
Top Competitors by Market Share
OpenResty Customers by Company Size & Age
What size companies use OpenResty? Mostly very small ones. 70.14% of matched companies with a known size have 1 to 10 employees and 20.19% have 11 to 50, so 90.33% have 50 or fewer. That's more tilted to micro-businesses than Nginx's profile (65.49% at 1 to 10) or LiteSpeed's (66.94%). 2,426 companies have more than 1,000 staff, and in our list of 50 the header often comes from one property a vendor runs, such as a careers site, a university blog or an open-data portal.
Company Size Distribution
Company Age (Founded Decade)
The largest group of matched companies was founded in the 2010s (39.65%), then the 2020s (19.4%) and the 2000s (19.18%), so 59.05% date from 2010 or later. 3.14% predate 1960, and that group holds some of the oldest names in our list: Banque de France (1800), Penn State (1855), Miele (1899) and BP (1909). For those four the header comes from an Opendatasoft data portal, a CampusPress site, a careers platform and a CDN-fronted origin.
What Industries Use OpenResty the Most?
Construction leads at 4.37%, ahead of IT Services and IT Consulting (3.93%), Retail (3.81%), Business Consulting and Services (3.73%) and Real Estate (3.7%), based on our enriched company data. Restaurants and Medical Practices (2% each) make the top ten. No industry reaches 5%, and the ten largest add up to under a third of matched companies. That's the profile of small local businesses, and Construction leads Nginx's and LiteSpeed's profiles too.
Universities using OpenResty in our list are mostly CampusPress customers: Penn State, Georgia Tech, Northeastern, the University of Chicago and UC Santa Cruz run sites hosted there, and CampusPress answers with OpenResty. Manufacturers on OpenResty often show it on a careers site run by a recruiting platform, as Textron, Miele and Heidelberg Materials do. Chinese companies using OpenResty show it on corporate and product sites, including Huawei, Xiaomi, ZTE and Meituan.
OpenResty Alternatives & Competitors
OpenResty is built on Nginx's core, so the two are less rivals than two builds of the same server. OpenResty adds LuaJIT and its own modules, and openresty.org lists web gateways and web application firewalls among its real-world uses; its home page also says it is not an Nginx fork. In a Server header the difference is the name the operator leaves in. For most small sites, choosing between OpenResty, LiteSpeed and Apache is the host's call. Our IIS research found the same thing from the other side: domains that switched between IIS and OpenResty were mostly a proxy added or removed in front of an unchanged site.
OpenResty Customer Migration
Tech Stack of OpenResty-Powered Websites
Across the 763,873 domains in our cleaned live set, WordPress runs on 22.54%, against 47.93% on Nginx's profile and 70.49% on LiteSpeed's, and Google Analytics on 28.14%. OpenResty sites are far less often WordPress builds than Nginx or LiteSpeed sites. Google Cloud CDN shows on 13.07%; on tpicomposites.com, for one, OpenResty answers from behind Google's load balancer. Naver Analytics (2.48%) and Baidu Analytics (1.09%) mark the Korean and Chinese sites in the base, and the site builders BaseKit (1.37%) and Strikingly (0.98%) some of the hosted ones.

How We Counted OpenResty Sites
A domain counts here when the Server header on a response from any of its hostnames names OpenResty. That header comes from the server that built the response, which is often a hosting platform, a careers-site vendor or a parking service rather than the site owner's own machine. bp.com, for example, answers through Amazon CloudFront with an OpenResty origin behind it. Read the count as domains whose edge announces OpenResty, not as installation decisions.
The headline is cleaned. When we checked the last page titles our crawler recorded for live OpenResty domains on 12 October 2026, the most common was "Redirecting...", on 162,693 domains, the hand-off page parking services put on unused and expired domains. In a random sample of 25 of them, 18 no longer resolved and the other 7 sat on parking servers. The same census found 6,100 "502 Bad Gateway" pages, 12,062 domains with one identical Chinese-language title, 2,538 "A Brand New Domain!" pages and 2,549 Porkbun for-sale or parked pages, plus Spaceship for-sale landers. We removed all of these along with the usual domain-for-sale and gambling titles: 236,436 of 1,000,316 raw live domains (23.6%). That's well over the 10% we accept before re-basing a headline, so the 763,880 headline and every chart and table on this page use the cleaned set.
Before cleaning, our count was 989,107 domains, 6.74% of Web Servers, and 4th place. Cleaned, OpenResty is still 4th, with 5.28%. We ran the same filter on its rivals. Apache lost 13,015 of 5,412,654 domains (0.24%), Nginx 96,047 of 5,220,840 (1.8%), LiteSpeed 47,445 of 2,464,783 (1.9%), IIS 351 of 439,911 (0.08%) and Caddy 1,855 of 68,119 (2.7%). That's too little to change any rank, so their published counts stand, and every share in the competitor table is computed on the same cleaned category total.
Some noise stays in. Domains with no title at all, 100,834 in the census, aren't removed, because a missing title isn't proof of parking. In a random sample of 104 live domains taken before cleaning, 51 answered with OpenResty on 12 October: 25 of those were parked, for-sale, placeholder or gambling pages, and 26 were working sites spread over more than a dozen hosts. Of the rest, 18 no longer resolved and 16 answered with another server. The 674,630 domains that dropped the header since March 2026 are counted on the raw set, and the cleaned figure exists for October only, so this page has no trend chart.
Expert Analysis: OpenResty Growth Trends & Key Signals for Sales Teams in 2026

I run the crawler that reads these headers, and OpenResty is the clearest case I know of a count that's true and still easy to misread. A domain counts here when the Server header in our crawler's response names OpenResty. In our October 2026 crawl that's 763,880 domains once parking and error pages are removed, 341,117 of them matched to a company, 4th of 70 in Web Servers. On 12 October I went back over samples by hand, reading headers and DNS, to see whose server was answering.
What the header can tell you
The Server header names the machine that built the response, and an operator can change it. On a modern site that machine often isn't the owner's. bp.com answers through Amazon CloudFront with an OpenResty origin behind it. Lenovo's storefront answers through Akamai. CERN's home.cern reports openresty/1.27.1.2 from its own servers. Same word in the header, three different setups.
Sales signal: an OpenResty detection tells you about a site's edge, not who chose it. Before pitching hosting, CDN or security tools, find out whether the header belongs to the company or to its host.
Almost a quarter of the raw count was parking
I counted the last page titles our crawler recorded for live OpenResty domains. The most common by a wide margin was "Redirecting...", on 162,693 domains. In a random sample of 25 of them, 18 no longer resolved and the other 7 sat on parking servers: five in one cloud range and two on a lander that forwards visitors to a /lander page. Add 6,100 "502 Bad Gateway" pages, 12,062 domains sharing one Chinese-language title and the for-sale landers, and we removed 236,436 of 1,000,316 raw live domains, 23.6%. The same filter took 1.8% from Nginx and 0.24% from Apache, so this is an OpenResty problem, not a crawl-wide one.
"Almost a quarter of the domains announcing OpenResty were parking or error pages. The header is real, but often there's no website behind it." - David Thomson, CTO at TechnologyChecker.io
Sales signal: the 763,880 on this page already excludes those pages, but 100,834 domains had no title at all, and they stay in. Check untitled domains before you build a list from this technology.
Header turnover, not churn
Our records show 674,630 domains that dropped the OpenResty header since we began tracking it in March 2026, counted on the raw set with parked domains included. Those are hostnames moving on and off OpenResty edges, not companies abandoning a web server: a proxy added or removed, a site moved to another host, a parked domain expiring. In a random sample of 104 live domains, 18 no longer resolved and 16 already answered with a different server, ten of them LiteSpeed. Only about 2% of the dropped domains still show OpenResty on another hostname. Our IIS research saw the same thing from the other side: domains that switched between IIS and OpenResty were mostly a proxy flipping in front of an unchanged site.
Our raw monthly counts move for those reasons and two of ours: 683,481 in June, 967,927 in July. The domains we crawl turn over every month, with dead sites dropping out and new ones added, and our detection widens over time. The cleaned count exists for October only.
Sales signal: don't read a lost OpenResty header as a migration you can sell into. Read it as a hosting change, and check the new header before you call.
The platforms behind the header
Among working sites, no two or three hosts explain the count. In the 104-domain sample, 26 working sites answered with OpenResty, spread over more than a dozen providers. The patterns show up in the company list instead. Nine of its university sites, including Penn State, Georgia Tech and the University of Chicago, resolve to CampusPress, a WordPress host for education. Careers sites for Textron, Alaska Airlines, Sci Corp and C&S Wholesale Grocers resolve to one shared careers-site server, and Miele's and Heidelberg Materials' run on job-shop.com. The data portals of Caisse des Dépôts and Banque de France run on Opendatasoft. In Central Europe, sites hosted by Websupport and stores on Shoptet answered with OpenResty, which helps explain why Czechia (7,667) and Slovakia (5,673) make the top 15 here and not on our Nginx or LiteSpeed profiles.
Sales signal: for vendors selling to universities or HR teams, the hosting platform is the account. One CampusPress or careers-platform relationship covers many of the enterprise rows on this page.
Who the matched companies are
70.14% of matched companies with a known size have 1 to 10 employees, more than on our Nginx (65.49%) or LiteSpeed (66.94%) profiles. Construction leads the industries at 4.37%, Restaurants and Medical Practices make the top ten, and 59.05% of companies were founded in 2010 or later. Small local firms, in other words. The 2,426 companies above 1,000 staff split two ways: Western enterprises whose header comes from a vendor-run property, and Chinese companies such as Huawei, Xiaomi, ZTE, Meituan and Ping An that show it on their own domains. China ranks 10th with 6,994 matched companies, and OpenResty's about page credits Taobao and Yahoo! China as its first sponsors.
Sales signal: the small-business majority buys hosting, not web servers, so reach them through their host or builder. The Chinese enterprise group is the part of this list most likely to run OpenResty by choice.
The stack around it
WordPress runs on 22.54% of OpenResty domains and Google Analytics on 28.14%, both far below Nginx's profile (47.93% and 45.32%). Removing the parking pages raised both figures, from 17.86% and 22.93% on the raw set, but the gap to Nginx stayed wide, so parking doesn't explain it. Google Cloud CDN appears on 13.07%, Naver Analytics on 2.48% and Baidu Analytics on 1.09%. Ruby on Rails (2.5%) is the most common framework we see under it. The base for these percentages is the 763,873 domains in our cleaned live set.
"When WordPress and Google Analytics are scarce on a web server's domains, count the parked pages first. Here, even after we took them out, OpenResty sites looked less like WordPress builds than Nginx's." - David Thomson, CTO at TechnologyChecker.io
Sales signal: Rails, Next.js (1.33%) and Express (0.66%) sites behind OpenResty are the developer-run minority. They're the right list for observability, API-gateway or web application firewall tools.
What OpenResty costs
The software is free. OpenResty's about page says it bundles components under BSD-style licences, and openresty.org lists 1.31.1.1 as the latest release. OpenResty Inc. sells OpenResty Edge, a gateway product offered through a demo and free trial, and OpenResty XRay for troubleshooting and profiling.
Sales signal: there's no licence fee to displace, so selling against OpenResty means selling operational help: managed gateways, observability, or a CDN that takes over the edge.
Key takeaways
1. 763,880 domains after cleaning, 4th of 70 in Web Servers with 5.28%, counted from the Server header.
2. 23.6% of the raw count was parking, for-sale and error pages, against 1.8% for Nginx.
3. The 674,630 drops since March are hostname turnover on the raw set, not customer churn.
4. Enterprise rows often trace to a vendor: CampusPress, careers platforms, open-data portals.
5. Czechia and Slovakia rank higher here than on Nginx's or LiteSpeed's profiles, helped by local hosts.

Frequently Asked Questions
Who uses OpenResty?
Mostly small businesses. Our crawl finds an OpenResty Server header on 763,880 domains once parking pages are removed, and 70.14% of matched companies have 1 to 10 staff. Named sites include BP, Lenovo, CERN, Adobe's commerce site, Huawei and Xiaomi. Many big names arrive through a vendor: CampusPress hosts nine of the university sites in our list.
How many customers does OpenResty have?
OpenResty is free, open-source software, so it has users rather than customers; OpenResty Inc. sells commercial products built around it. Our October 2026 crawl finds 763,880 domains answering with an OpenResty Server header, 341,117 matched to a company. That's after removing 236,436 parking, for-sale and error pages, 23.6% of the raw count.
What is OpenResty's market share?
5.28% of Web Servers, 4th of the 70 technologies we track there, on 763,880 domains in October 2026 after removing parking pages. Apache (5,365,858) and Nginx (5,101,407) hold about 72% between them, and LiteSpeed (2,471,028) is third. OpenResty has about 1.8 times IIS's 434,800 domains. The share counts whichever server answers, so platforms running OpenResty at their edge are part of it.
What are the best alternatives to OpenResty?
Plain Nginx is the closest alternative, since OpenResty is built on its core; you lose the LuaJIT scripting layer. Apache and LiteSpeed are the usual servers on shared hosting, and IIS on Windows. Caddy is much smaller in our crawl, at 68,037 domains. For most small sites the host makes this choice rather than the owner, so check what your hosting plan runs first.
Which countries use OpenResty the most?
The United States has the most matched companies, 99,771, then the United Kingdom (21,124), Germany (17,549), the Netherlands (12,855) and India (11,096). Czechia (7,667) and Slovakia (5,673) both make the top 15, which they don't on our Nginx or LiteSpeed profiles; Czech and Slovak hosting and store platforms answer with OpenResty. China (6,994) ranks 10th.
What size companies use OpenResty?
Mostly very small ones. 70.14% of matched companies with a known size have 1 to 10 employees and 20.19% have 11 to 50, so 90.33% have 50 or fewer, a heavier tilt than Nginx's 65.49% at 1 to 10. 2,426 companies have more than 1,000 staff, including BP, Lenovo, Adobe and Textron, where the header often comes from one property, such as a careers site.
How old are companies that use OpenResty?
Among the OpenResty domains we could match to a company with a known founding date, the largest group was founded in the 2010s (39.65%), followed by the 2020s (19.4%). That matched subset is drawn from 341,117 companies and is not representative of all 763,880 detected domains. This suggests OpenResty is most popular among relatively young companies.
What is the ideal customer profile for OpenResty?
The ideal OpenResty customer is: Company Size: 1-10 employees (70.14%), Location: US, then UK, Germany, Netherlands, Founded: 2010-2019 (39.65%), Industry: Construction, IT services, retail, Hosting: Hosted site behind a platform's edge — based on our analysis of 341,117 enriched companies at TechnologyChecker.io.
What is OpenResty used for?
Running web gateways and applications inside Nginx. OpenResty bundles an enhanced Nginx core with LuaJIT and Lua libraries, so developers can script request handling in Lua and talk to MySQL, PostgreSQL, Memcached or Redis without blocking. Its site lists web gateways, web application firewalls and dynamic web portals among real-world uses. In our crawl it often fronts hosting platforms and careers sites.
Is OpenResty a web server?
Yes. OpenResty is a full web server and application platform: an enhanced Nginx core bundled with LuaJIT, Lua libraries and third-party Nginx modules. Its site says it isn't an Nginx fork but a higher-level platform that uses Nginx as a component. The name shows up in Server headers, which is how we count it on 763,880 domains in our crawl.
What's the difference between OpenResty and Nginx?
OpenResty is Nginx plus a scripting layer. It ships an enhanced Nginx core with LuaJIT, the Lua Nginx module and many Lua libraries, so logic that would need C modules in plain Nginx can be written in Lua. OpenResty says most of its core patches have been submitted to, and largely accepted by, the Nginx team. Nginx alone counts 5,101,407 domains in our category table.
What is an OpenResty error?
It's an error page from a server running OpenResty, such as "403 Forbidden" or "502 Bad Gateway" with "openresty" printed underneath. It names the server software, not the website's owner or the cause. Hosts and parking services run OpenResty at scale: before cleaning, 6,100 OpenResty domains in our crawl last showed a "502 Bad Gateway" title and 162,693 a parking "Redirecting..." page.
Is OpenResty free?
Yes. OpenResty is open source, and its about page says it bundles components under BSD-style licences. You can download the source from openresty.org, where the latest release listed is 1.31.1.1. OpenResty Inc. sells two commercial products built around it: OpenResty Edge, a gateway product offered through a demo and free trial, and OpenResty XRay, a troubleshooting and profiling tool.
Who created OpenResty?
Yichun Zhang, known on GitHub as agentzh. OpenResty Inc. says he first created it in 2007. Its about page says Yahoo! China and Taobao.com sponsored it before 2011 and Cloudflare supported it from 2012 to 2016. Today it's mainly backed by the OpenResty Software Foundation and OpenResty Inc., the company that sells commercial products built on it.
How does TechnologyChecker.io detect OpenResty?
We read the Server header on the responses our crawler gets, and a domain counts when it names OpenResty. That header comes from the server that built the response, which may be a host's proxy rather than the site's own machine, and operators can change or hide it. We then remove parking, for-sale and error pages, which leaves 763,880 domains.
Are websites leaving OpenResty?
Not in the way the numbers suggest. 674,630 domains have dropped the header since March 2026, counted on the raw set with parked domains included, because hostnames flip on and off OpenResty edges as proxies change, sites move host and parked domains expire. In a random sample of 104 live domains, 18 no longer resolved and 16 answered with another server.
