How has LiteSpeed adoption changed over time?

LiteSpeed first appears in our records in January 2011 on 114 domains and grows across the following decade to a high of 1,733,643 domains in April 2025. Our current crawl detects it on 2,442,625 domains, up from 2,080,291 in June 2026 and 2,409,229 in July.

Counts either side of that gap are not a like-for-like series: the set of domains we crawl turns over every month, with dead sites dropping out and newly discovered ones added, and our detection signals widen over time. Inside the current window growth has flattened to 1.4% between July and August 2026. A further 271,874 domains have stopped answering with a LiteSpeed header since we began tracking in March 2026, which for a web server usually means the site moved host rather than that anyone evaluated a replacement.

LiteSpeed has the flattest geography of any technology in this category. Among the countries we can place, the United States leads with only 20.94%, followed by the United Kingdom (13.01%), India (12.09%), Brazil (10.32%) and Australia (10.17%), with the Netherlands (5.62%), Poland (4.90%) and Canada (4.79%) behind them.

For comparison, a typical enterprise product in our data puts 60-90% of its identified customers in the United States. A server that reaches four continents in double digits is not being sold market by market, it is riding the international shared-hosting industry.

LiteSpeed holds 17.62% of the web server market by detected domains and ranks #3 of the 68 servers we track. Apache HTTP Server leads on 37.12% (5,144,649 domains) and Nginx follows on 33.97% (4,708,036), with OpenResty fourth at 6.54%.

One thing to understand about this figure before comparing it with Apache or Nginx. LiteSpeed Technologies ships two servers: the commercial LiteSpeed Web Server and OpenLiteSpeed, a separate GPLv3 product. Both answer with the same Server: LiteSpeed header, and we do not currently track OpenLiteSpeed as a distinct technology, so this count is the LiteSpeed server family rather than paid licences alone. We cannot split the two from response headers, and no figure on this page should be read as a licence count.

66.94% of identified domains belong to companies with 1-10 employees and a further 22.18% have 11-50, out of 1,354,432 identified companies. Only 2,765 have more than 5,000 staff.

Nobody at a ten-person company chooses a web server. That distribution is the signature of a decision made once by a hosting provider and inherited by every account on the platform, which is exactly how LiteSpeed is sold.

No industry leads by much: Construction (4.54%), IT Services and IT Consulting (4.41%), Advertising Services (3.52%), Business Consulting and Services (3.36%) and Retail (3.33%) sit within a point of each other.

A flat industry table is itself the finding. When a technology's customers look like a cross-section of small business in general, it is not being adopted for any industry-specific reason, and the interesting question moves from who chooses it to who ships it.

How does LiteSpeed usage break down by sector?

Construction firms are nominally the largest group at 4.54%, but the gap to IT Services and IT Consulting (4.41%), Advertising Services (3.52%) and Retail (3.33%) is inside a single point. Compare that with Ensighten, where insurance alone accounts for 72.5%, or GiveWP, where non-profits take 30.86%. LiteSpeed has no vertical because a web server has no vertical, and the long tail of small business sites on shared hosting is what the table is really showing.

LiteSpeed's pitch is that it is not really a migration: it reads Apache's configuration and .htaccess files, so a host can swap the engine underneath thousands of accounts without asking any of them to change anything. That compatibility is why the switching numbers below are as large as they are.

Where do domains migrate from and to with LiteSpeed?

This is the busiest migration table we measure anywhere, and it runs strongly in LiteSpeed's favour. Since we began tracking in March 2026, 240,996 domains moved to LiteSpeed from OpenResty against 81,979 going the other way. Apache contributes a further 25,674 in against 11,856 out, and Nginx is close to even at 13,354 in and 12,254 out.

Read those numbers as infrastructure decisions rather than product choices. Movements of this size in five months are hosting providers re-platforming estates of shared-hosting accounts, not a quarter of a million site owners each evaluating a web server. The direction is real; the number of decision-makers behind it is very much smaller than the number of domains.

What technologies run on LiteSpeed servers?

WordPress appears on 70.49% of LiteSpeed domains, and the LiteSpeed Cache plugin on 47.75%. Those two together describe the product's real market: LiteSpeed is sold hard into WordPress hosting, where its cache plugin is the visible half of the value and the server is the half customers never see.

Hostinger runs on 22.56% of LiteSpeed domains, far ahead of GoDaddy at 4.39%, which makes it the single largest identifiable route to market. It is worth being precise about what that does and does not mean: Hostinger accounts for roughly a fifth of LiteSpeed's footprint, and fewer than half of Hostinger's own domains answer with a LiteSpeed header, so this is a major distribution channel rather than a platform default. Google Analytics (43.05%), Cloudflare (21.56%) and WooCommerce (14.1%) sit at ordinary levels for a WordPress-heavy base.
