Decision

BuiltWith is the larger index by its own figures, and nothing on this page argues otherwise. It says it tracks 127,890 technologies across over 370 million active domains, against the 40,000+ technologies and 29,983,908 live business domains in our September 2026 crawl. Its Chrome extension has 300,000 users, single-site lookups on builtwith.com are free with no published cap, and it sells ecommerce product and sales data that we do not. Where the two separate is what a lookup costs. Our entry paid plan is $89 a month against BuiltWith's $295, and it includes 10,000 API lookups. The same 10,000 lookups bought as BuiltWith API credits cost $259, which is $8.90 per 1,000 against $25.90, and at 50,000 the gap holds at $249 against $659. BuiltWith's plans start bundling API credits at Team, $995 a month. Change data is not the split either, because both sell it. BuiltWith returns additions and removals per domain and streams new detections over a live feed. What we add is the pairing: a switch query that returns the domains that dropped a technology for a competitor, and which competitor they chose, across the whole crawl, with any saved query delivered as a signed webhook. G2 reviewers score us higher on every criterion where both sides have enough responses, 4.9 from 7 reviews against 4.3 from 63, but seven reviews is an early footprint and not a verdict.

  • Your volume is in the thousands to tens of thousands of lookups a month. 10,000 cost $89 with us and $259 as BuiltWith API credits; 50,000 cost $249 against $659.
  • You want API access, CRM integrations and contact data on an $89 plan. BuiltWith's plans start at $295, and the first one with a published API credit allowance is Team at $995.
  • You need to know who replaced a technology and with what. Our switch query returns the domains that dropped a technology for a competitor, and the destination, across the crawl. BuiltWith's Change API reports additions and removals for domains you supply and leaves the pairing to you.
  • You would rather receive change events as signed webhooks on a saved query than hold a WebSocket open. BuiltWith's Live Feed allows 2 technology subscriptions per key on Basic and 50 on Pro.
  • Current user satisfaction weighs with you. G2 reviewers score us 9.2 on support against 7.8 and 10.0 on product direction against 6.8, though on 6 or 7 responses each against BuiltWith's 31 and 54.

A favicon of BuiltWithChoose BuiltWith if…

  • You need the broadest index available. By BuiltWith's own count that is 127,890 technologies across over 370 million active domains, several times what we cover.
  • Your lookups are occasional and one site at a time. BuiltWith states single-site lookups on its website are free forever, and its Chrome extension has 300,000 users; our free tier is 100 lookups a month.
  • You sell into ecommerce and want product and sales estimates. BuiltWith says it tracks 2 billion products across over 26 million ecommerce websites, and we publish no equivalent.
  • You run at very large volume. BuiltWith's credit tiers fall to $1.00 per 1,000 lookups above 10 million, while our published plans stop at 50,000 a month, with larger volumes on custom terms.
  • You want a longer third-party track record. BuiltWith carries 63 G2 reviews against our 7, and it was founded in 2007.

How big is each one?

Read Oct 21, 2026

BuiltWith is the larger index on both counts it publishes, and by a wide margin on domains. It says it tracks 127,890 technologies across over 370 million active domains; we track 40,000+ technologies across 29,983,908 live business domains in the September 2026 crawl. Size answers one kind of question well, whether a given site ever ran a given technology, and for that the bigger index has more chances to have seen it.

Each vendor's own published figure. BuiltWith's technology count is from builtwith.com/plans and its domain count from builtwith.com/all-features, both read Oct 21, 2026.

These are each vendor's own totals, and they are not counted the same way. Our 40,000+ is the catalog we track; BuiltWith's 127,890 is the number of technologies it says it covers. BuiltWith publishes no machine-readable list of its technologies (its trends sitemap returns a 404 and its technology dataset page sits behind a CAPTCHA), so the two cannot be matched item by item, and this page does not try to. On domains, our 29,983,908 counts live business domains in one crawl. BuiltWith's own pages print three figures: over 370 million active domains, data from 491.9 million domains, and 551,540,987 root domains. We show the active figure because it is the closest to our basis. On any of the three, BuiltWith's index is the larger by an order of magnitude.

BuiltWith sells API lookups as credits, apart from its plans, and publishes the price of each batch. So the like-for-like comparison is the same number of domain lookups bought on each side, and at the volumes most teams buy it is not close. Its tiers keep falling with volume, to $1.00 per 1,000 above 10 million credits, so at very large volumes the comparison turns.

One credit buys one domain lookup on both sides. BuiltWith states its x402 lookup units do not expire; our plan lookups reset each month.

Does BuiltWith sell change data?

API docs read Oct 21, 2026

Yes, and any comparison that says otherwise is out of date. BuiltWith's Change API returns technology additions and removals for the domains you supply, at one credit per domain that has changes. Its Lists API returns sites that started using a technology since a date, every Domain API record carries first- and last-detected dates, and its Live Feed streams new detections over a WebSocket, for up to 2 technologies per key on Basic and 50 on Pro.

The difference is shape rather than existence. BuiltWith answers per domain and per event. We answer per question across the crawl: adoption, churn, competitive switch and category whitespace are each one query, every adoption and churn event carries a 0-100 confidence score, and a tested query can be saved as an HMAC-signed webhook that delivers only new events.

The one answer only one side returns is the switch: the domains that dropped a technology for a competitor, and which competitor they chose. BuiltWith's Change API reports the removal and the addition as separate events, and no endpoint in its API catalog pairs them. That pairing is what turns a churn list into a list of accounts a rival has just won.

A founder's view on BuiltWith

Opinion, not a measurement
A favicon of Mehmet Suleyman
Mehmet SuleymanCEO & Co-founder, TechnologyChecker · Oct 21, 2026

The sections above stick to what can be read off BuiltWith's own pages, so I will say plainly what they do not. I think BuiltWith's data accuracy is too low for the way most teams now use technographic data. Lists no longer sit in a spreadsheet; they go straight into a CRM and an outbound sequence, and at that point a wrong detection is a wrong email to a real person. BuiltWith's exports were one of the reasons we built TechnologyChecker in the first place.

The same goes for the headline count. BuiltWith says it tracks 127,890 technologies, and in my view most of them are expired: products that were discontinued, renamed or absorbed years ago, whose detections no longer match anything on a live website. A catalog that keeps every technology it has ever seen will always look bigger than the set of technologies actually running today. That is true of any long-running catalog, ours included, which is why I would not choose either tool on its technology count.

None of this is a measurement. We have not yet published a benchmark against BuiltWith, and until we do, this is my opinion and should be read as one. The test I would suggest is simple: take twenty domains you know well, look each one up on both tools, and count the detections you can confirm by opening the site.

A favicon of David Thomson
David ThomsonCTO, TechnologyChecker · Reviewed Oct 21, 2026

I would start where most comparison pages will not: BuiltWith is the bigger index, and not by a little. By its own figures it covers 127,890 technologies across over 370 million active domains; our September 2026 crawl covers 29,983,908 live business domains and we track 40,000+ technologies. If your question is whether one obscure site ever ran a given technology, the larger index has more chances to have seen it, and I would not pretend otherwise.

What I would decide on is the cost of the lookups you actually make. For a team making a few thousand to a few tens of thousands of domain lookups a month, the arithmetic is not close: 10,000 lookups are $89 with us and $259 in BuiltWith API credits, and 50,000 are $249 against $659. BuiltWith's own answer to volume is the Team plan, $995 a month with 1.2 million API credits a year, which lands near our Pro rate per lookup but at eleven times the monthly commitment. Its tiers do keep falling, to $1.00 per 1,000 above 10 million credits, so at very large volumes the comparison turns, and I would rather say that here than have a buyer find it on their own.

On change data the honest position is that both of us sell it, so the useful question is its shape. BuiltWith's model is per domain and per event: give it domains and it returns what was added and removed, or subscribe to a technology on its live feed and receive new detections as they happen. Ours is per question across the crawl: who adopted a technology, who dropped it, and who replaced it with a rival and which rival. That last one is the difference I would test in a trial. A removal on its own tells you a site stopped running something; the replacement tells you who won the account, and that is the version a sales team can act on.

Two things are missing from this page on purpose. There is no overlap figure between the two catalogs, because BuiltWith publishes no complete technology list to match against, and a diff we could not reproduce from their side would not be worth printing. And there is no accuracy score, because we have not run a hand-checked benchmark against BuiltWith. When we have, it will be published with its sample and method, the way our Wappalyzer benchmark was. Until then the absence is the honest answer.

How we compared · This page compares our own product with a competitor's, and we sell the data behind it. Every BuiltWith figure links to the BuiltWith page it was read from, which is the only reason to trust it.

BuiltWith figures. Plans and prices are from its plans page, the technology count from the same page, the active-domain count from its features page, API behaviour and credit prices from its API documentation, and the extension install base from the Chrome Web Store listing. All read Oct 21, 2026. Where BuiltWith's own pages disagree, the page names the figure it uses and why.

Our figures. The September 2026 crawl of 29,983,908 live business domains, the 40,000+ technology catalog published across this site, and our pricing page.

What we deliberately do not publish. No overlap between the two technology catalogs, because BuiltWith publishes no complete list to match against. No accuracy score, because we have not run a benchmark against BuiltWith. And no count of change events, because our current-state table was populated in March 2026 and its early change counts measure that population rather than real technology churn.

Counts are domains. Our figures count distinct registrable domains in the September 2026 crawl. One company can run several domains, so these are not customer or account counts.

Is TechnologyChecker cheaper than BuiltWith?

At the volumes most teams buy, yes. Our Pro plan is $89 a month for 10,000 lookups including API access, which is $8.90 per 1,000. BuiltWith's plans start at $295 a month, and 10,000 API lookups bought as BuiltWith credits cost $259, which is $25.90 per 1,000. At 50,000 lookups a month our Scale plan is $249 against $659 in BuiltWith credits. BuiltWith's credit tiers keep falling with volume, to $1.00 per 1,000 above 10 million, so at very large volumes the comparison changes. BuiltWith's pricing pages and API documentation were read on 21 October 2026.

Does BuiltWith track more technologies than TechnologyChecker?

By its own published figures, yes. BuiltWith says it tracks 127,890 technologies across over 370 million active domains. TechnologyChecker.io tracks 40,000+ technologies, and its September 2026 crawl covers 29,983,908 live business domains. The two totals are not counted the same way and BuiltWith publishes no machine-readable list of its technologies, so this comparison does not compute an overlap between them.

Does BuiltWith have a change API or technology alerts?

Yes. BuiltWith's Change API returns technology additions and removals for the domains you supply, its Lists API can return sites that started using a technology since a date, its Domain API records first- and last-detected dates, and its WebSocket Live Feed streams new detections for up to 2 technologies on Basic and 50 on Pro. It also sends notifications for websites and reports you follow. What it does not publish is an endpoint that pairs a removal with the technology that replaced it. TechnologyChecker.io's switch query returns exactly that across the crawl, alongside adoption, churn and category whitespace queries, and any saved query can be delivered as an HMAC-signed webhook.

Does BuiltWith include contact data?

Yes. BuiltWith's plans page lists contact names, emails and titles, described as individuals publicly listed with businesses and gathered within GDPR restrictions, along with telephone numbers found on websites. TechnologyChecker.io includes contact data on its $89 Pro plan. Older comparison posts that say BuiltWith has no contact data are out of date.

How was this comparison measured?

Every BuiltWith figure was read from BuiltWith's own pages on 21 October 2026: its plans, features, data-coverage and Team Ultra pages, its API documentation and pricing descriptor at api.builtwith.com, and its Chrome Web Store listing. G2 figures are from G2's BuiltWith vs Technologychecker.io comparison page, read the same day. Our figures are the September 2026 crawl of 29,983,908 live business domains, our published 40,000+ technology catalog and our pricing page. Where BuiltWith's own pages disagree with each other, the page says which figure it uses and why. Nothing here is a benchmark we ran; no accuracy score is published because none has been measured against BuiltWith.

How much does BuiltWith cost?

BuiltWith's plans are $295 a month for Basic, $495 for Pro and $995 for Team, with annual billing at ten times the monthly price; Team Ultra has no published price. API credits are also sold separately: $99 for 2,000 and $259 for 10,000. Single-site lookups on builtwith.com are free. Read from builtwith.com/plans and BuiltWith's API documentation on 21 October 2026.

Is BuiltWith free?

Partly. BuiltWith states that individual site lookups on its website are free forever, and its Chrome extension is free to install. Lists of websites using a technology, CRM integration, contact data and API access need a paid plan or purchased credits, starting at $295 a month for Basic. TechnologyChecker.io's free tier is 100 lookups a month with no card.

How does BuiltWith work?

BuiltWith crawls websites and records the technologies it detects on each, with the dates each was first and last seen. Its data-coverage page says it scans 35,498,880 domains a day. That record is available free one site at a time on builtwith.com and in its Chrome extension, and in bulk on paid plans as lists, CRM sync, alerts and APIs.

How reliable is BuiltWith?

We have not benchmarked BuiltWith's detections, so this page gives no accuracy figure for it. G2 reviewers rate BuiltWith 4.3 out of 5 from 63 reviews and 8.5 out of 10 on meeting requirements from 54 responses, and its Chrome extension rates 3.6 from 414 ratings. BuiltWith's Domain API attaches a confidence score from 0 to 1 to each detection, which is the signal to use when a single result matters.

What are some alternatives to BuiltWith?

The usual alternatives are Wappalyzer, TechnologyChecker.io and SimilarTech for technology data, and ZoomInfo when contacts matter more than technology detail. They differ on index size, price per lookup and whether they sell change data. On TechnologyChecker.io's side the case against BuiltWith is cost, $89 for 10,000 lookups against $259 in BuiltWith credits, and a switch query that names the competitor a site moved to.
