  • Selling is the business: Shopify Payments at 2.9% + 30¢ online with no platform fee, inventory across 10 locations on Basic and 200+ reports
  • You sell in person or on marketplaces: casual point of sale on every plan, POS Pro at $89 a month per location, 50 synced marketplace orders a month free
  • Support and direction matter: G2 scores Shopify 8.4 to Wix's 8.0 on quality of support and 8.8 to 8.2 on product direction

A favicon of WixChoose Wix if…

  • You want to publish at $0 first and add a store later; Shopify has a 3-day trial, not a free plan
  • Scheduling, bookings or a service business: Wix lists scheduling and services from its Core plan
  • You want more seats early: 5 collaborators on Core and 10 on Business, where Shopify Basic allows no additional staff logins
Decision

1,124 domains dropped Wix and now run Shopify in the 90 days to September 7, 2026, against 664 that went the other way: a 1.7 : 1 flow in Shopify's favour (TechnologyChecker, August 2026 crawl). The two are not in the same category. Shopify is detected on 2,246,824 domains (34.42% of ecommerce platforms, position #1) and a Shopify signal means a Shopify storefront or checkout; Wix is detected on 1,298,903 domains (8.72% of CMS platforms, position #2) and its signal means a site built and hosted on Wix, with or without a store. Wix's own store product, Wix eCommerce, is detected on 1,078,931 domains and sits at position #3 in ecommerce platforms. 1,963 domains carry both the Wix and Shopify signals at once, which is what a Wix site with an embedded Shopify checkout looks like, so read the two-way counts as the movement of the store rather than of the whole site. Shopify is the pick when selling is the business: Shopify Payments at 2.9% + 30¢ with no platform fee, point of sale, shipping labels and 1000s of apps from $29 a month on yearly billing. Wix is the pick when the site has to start at $0, when bookings and scheduling matter, or when the store is a sideline that Core's basic eCommerce covers. G2 reviewers rate Shopify higher (4.4 to 4.2) and ahead on five of seven criteria, widest on quality of support (8.4 to 8.0); Wix leads on ease of setup (8.9 to 8.8) and ties on ease of use.

G2 satisfaction scores out of 10 — the bar runs from 0 at the left rule to 10 at the right — with the number of reviewers who answered each question, read from the G2 comparison on Sep 7, 2026. A gap under 0.3 is inside the noise on samples this size and is shown as even.
Reviewers and domains point the same way. G2 users put Shopify ahead on 3 of 7 criteria, and our crawl has 1,124 domains moving WixShopify in the window against 664 the other way. Weigh it against the samples: Shopify carries 2.7× more G2 reviews (5,142 to 1,889), so Wix's scores rest on the thinner panel.

What people like about Shopify. Ease of use leads the G2 topic counts (272 mentions), then easy integration (101), on a panel of 5,142 reviews. Shopify scores 8.9 on ease of use, level with Wix, and leads on meets requirements (8.8 to 8.6), ease of admin (8.9 to 8.7), quality of support (8.4 to 8.0), being a good business partner (8.8 to 8.4) and product direction (8.8 to 8.2). Our profile data puts retail and apparel as Shopify's two largest industries and 73.55% of its enriched base at companies of 1 to 10 people.

What people do not like. Expensive (152 mentions) and limited customization (95) are the two complaints, and the plans page explains both: Basic is $39 a month on monthly billing, adds a 2% fee on every sale through a third-party gateway, allows no additional staff logins, and keeps checkout customisation limited until Plus at $2,300 a month. There is no free plan, which is the one place Wix's plans page has a clear edge.

What people like about Wix. Ease of use dominates the G2 topic counts (254 mentions), followed by easy creation (96), on a panel of 1,889 reviews. Wix edges Shopify on ease of setup (8.9 to 8.8) and ties it on ease of use (8.9), which fits a product that starts at $0 and adds payments and a store on Core. G2's largest reviewer segment for both products is small business, and our profile data puts 78.74% of Wix's enriched base at companies of 1 to 10 people, led by business consulting and construction rather than retail.

What people do not like. Limited customization (72 mentions) and Expensive (68) are the two complaints, and both arrive with growth: payments and eCommerce start on Core, the developer platform is a Business Elite feature, and the plans page prices by region. Quality of support is Wix's lowest rating on the page (8.0 against Shopify's 8.4), and Wix trails on five of the seven criteria.

The reviews lean Shopify and the switching data leans the same way. 1,124 domains dropped Wix for Shopify in the 90 days to September 7, 2026 against 664 going back, a 1.7 : 1 balance, with 1,963 domains running both at once. G2's support gap (8.4 to 8.0) and Wix's limited-customization complaints (72 mentions) are the most plausible reasons for the net 460 domains a quarter, while Wix's wins on ease of setup and its free plan explain why the return flow is still two thirds the size. Both platforms lose more domains elsewhere: Wix lost 4,251 domains to WordPress in the same window, nearly four times what it lost to Shopify, and Shopify gained 3,339 from WooCommerce.

Mehmet Suleyman
Mehmet SuleymanCEO & Co-founder, TechnologyChecker · Reviewed Sep 7, 2026

The number worth citing is the direction, with its caveat attached. 1,124 domains moving from Wix to Shopify against 664 moving back in one quarter is a 1.7 : 1 flow on bases of 1.3 million and 2.2 million domains, and 1,963 domains carry both signals at once. That last figure is the caveat: Shopify is a storefront and checkout, Wix is a site builder, and a Wix site can embed a Shopify checkout without leaving Wix. Some of the "switches" on this page are stores changing their checkout, not businesses changing their website. Wix also has its own store product, Wix eCommerce, detected on 1,078,931 domains, and the Shopify profile counts 828 domains arriving from it in the same window.

The profile data says where each platform's real competition is. Wix lost 4,251 domains to WordPress in the same window, nearly four times what it lost to Shopify, and Shopify took 3,339 domains from WooCommerce, three times what it took from Wix. A team choosing between these two is usually deciding whether the store or the site comes first, and the corridor says stores that grow tend to end up on Shopify.

Where the crowd may be wrong: G2 reviewers call Shopify expensive 152 times and Wix expensive 68 times, but the two are not priced the same way. Shopify's fee only appears when a merchant declines Shopify Payments, and Wix's paid tiers are priced by region. The number I would not lean on is Wix's paid pricing on this page: the plans page served a regional variant on every fetch, so the editor should confirm the USD prices for Light, Core, Business and Business Elite before this page is indexed.

Our detection dataFirst-party

The switching corridor, adoption curves, market shares and customer lists come from our own monthly crawl of 29.9M live business domains, detected across the full signal stack: HTTP headers, rendered DOM, JS globals, DNS, TLS and certificate transparency.

A switch is an observed change, not a survey answer: a domain dropped Shopify on every host we track and now runs Wix. Counts are domains, not accounts. Company attributes (industry, employee band, country) come from the enriched samples named in each caption (441,180 companies for Shopify, 1,096,571 for Wix).

Full detection methodology →

The vendors' own pages

Pricing tables and the feature matrix are read from shopify.com and wix.com, entered by hand and checked cell by cell by an editor. Every table names its source URL and the date it was verified.

A verification older than 90 days withdraws the page from search until an editor re-checks it, so a stale price cannot outrank a current one.

G2's comparison of this pair →

Only the first column is ours alone: no other tracker publishes who is switching between Shopify and Wix. Where the sources disagree, the page says so next to the numbers rather than averaging them.

How many companies switched from Wix to Shopify?

1,124 domains dropped Wix and now run Shopify in the 90 days to September 7, 2026, against 664 that moved from Shopify to Wix. Counts are domains, not companies or contracts, and a drop means the Wix signal disappeared from our crawl on every host we track while a Shopify storefront or checkout appeared.

Which is more widely used, Shopify or Wix?

Shopify, by about 1.7x: 2,246,824 detected domains and 34.42% of the ecommerce platforms category (position #1) against Wix's 1,298,903 and 8.72% of CMS platforms (position #2), as of the August 2026 crawl. The two sit in different categories, so the shares are not of the same total. Wix's store product, Wix eCommerce, is detected on 1,078,931 domains and is #3 in ecommerce platforms.

Does Wix have a free plan and does Shopify?

Wix does: a free plan on a wixsite.com address with Wix branding, no custom domain and no online payments. Shopify does not; it offers a 3-day free trial and then $1 a month for 3 months before Basic at $29 a month on yearly billing or $39 monthly.

Can a Wix site use Shopify?

Our crawl finds 1,963 domains carrying both a Wix signal and a Shopify signal at once, as of September 7, 2026, which is what a Wix site with an embedded Shopify checkout looks like. Those domains are counted as running both, not as switchers in either direction.

What do G2 reviewers say about Shopify vs Wix?

Shopify scores 4.4 stars on 5,142 reviews and Wix 4.2 on 1,889 (read September 7, 2026). Shopify leads on five of seven criteria, widest on quality of support (8.4 to 8.0) and product direction (8.8 to 8.2); Wix leads on ease of setup (8.9 to 8.8) and the two tie on ease of use (8.9). Ease of use is the top praise for both; Shopify's top complaint is Expensive (152 mentions) and Wix's is limited customization (72).

How much does Shopify take from a $100 sale?

On the Basic plan with Shopify Payments, an online card sale costs 2.9% + 30¢, which is $3.20 on a $100 order, with no platform fee on top. With a third-party gateway on Basic, Shopify adds a 2% transaction fee ($2.00) and the gateway charges its own rate. In-person card sales through Shopify Payments cost 2.6% + 10¢ ($2.70 on $100).

What is the downside of using Shopify?

Cost is the most cited complaint on G2 (Expensive, 152 mentions), followed by limited customization (95). The pricing page shows why: there is no free plan, Basic is $39 a month on monthly billing, charges 2% on sales through a third-party gateway, includes no additional staff logins, and keeps checkout customisation limited until Plus at $2,300 a month.

What are the disadvantages of Wix?

G2 reviewers cite limited customization (72 mentions) and Expensive (68) on a panel of 1,889 reviews, and score Wix lowest on quality of support (8.0 against Shopify's 8.4). On the plans page, online payments and eCommerce start on Core, the developer platform is a Business Elite feature, and the free plan carries Wix branding without a custom domain. Our crawl shows 1,124 domains leaving Wix for Shopify in the 90 days to September 7, 2026, against 664 coming back.

Is Shopify still worth it in 2026?

On the data here, Shopify is the platform stores move to: 1,124 domains arrived from Wix in the 90 days to September 7, 2026 against 664 that left for Wix, and 3,339 arrived from WooCommerce in the same window. It is the ecommerce platforms leader at 2,246,824 domains (34.42%), rated 4.4 on G2 on 5,142 reviews. The cost complaint is real (152 mentions), so it is worth it when selling is the business, not when a store is a sideline.

Who is Shopify's biggest competitor?

By deployment, WooCommerce: 1,463,627 domains and 22.42% of ecommerce platforms (position #2) against Shopify's 34.42%, with Wix eCommerce third at 1,078,931. By switching, WooCommerce is also the largest source of arrivals to Shopify (3,339 domains in the 90 days to September 7, 2026) ahead of Wix (1,124) and Squarespace (1,184).
