Companies Using Caddy
Caddy is an open-source web server that gets its own HTTPS certificates. In our October 2026 crawl, 68,037 domains answer with a Server header that names it. That header identifies whichever machine built the response, and for many of these domains it's a website builder or a software vendor hosting the company's subdomain. The list below covers the companies that use Caddy on at least one domain, with size, country and industry for each. Among them are Air Liquide's shareholder site, Coalfire, Lingoda, Spain's Ministry of Health, and the help centres of Serta and Transit.
In Web Servers, Caddy ranks 6th of the 70 technologies we track, with 0.47%, far behind Apache, Nginx and LiteSpeed. About one in five Caddy domains is a Readymag site: the website builder's servers answer for its customers' custom domains. Another 6,190 domains carry the script set we found on SITE123 sites. Treat the total as a floor, because operators and proxies can change or drop the header.

Caddy Usage Statistics
We count 68,037 Caddy domains in October 2026, against 74,776 in June. The count fell by 7,089 between July and August, from 74,254 to 67,165, and has edged up since. Part of that movement is on our side: the set of domains we crawl turns over every month, with dead sites dropping out and newly found ones added, and our detection signals widen over time. Since we began tracking it in March 2026, 40,656 domains have dropped the Caddy header, and about 2,700 of them still show it on another hostname. Read that as headers changing, not companies leaving.

Which Countries Use Caddy the Most?
Which countries use Caddy the most? The United States, with 6,597 matched companies, then Germany (2,844), the United Kingdom (2,604) and France (1,540). Taken together, Europe leads: the ten European countries in the top 15 add up to 11,972 matched companies, 1.8 times the US count. Sweden (1,061) ranks 6th and Norway (698) 11th, both above Australia (639). These counts cover the 30,685 Caddy domains we matched to a company.
Share of the 30,685 Caddy domains we matched to a company record — 45.1% of the 68,037 we detect. Top 15 countries shown, so these do not sum to 100%. Domains with no matching company record are not represented here and skew small and independent.
Caddy Market Share Among Web Servers
What is Caddy's market share? 0.47% of Web Servers, 6th of the 70 technologies we track there, based on our crawl at TechnologyChecker.io. Apache (5,365,858 domains, 37.12%) and Nginx (5,101,407, 35.29%) hold most of the category, and LiteSpeed has 2,471,028 (17.1%). OpenResty has 763,880 (5.28%) after its own page removed parking pages. IIS has 434,800, about 6.4 times Caddy's 68,037. All shares use one category total, and Caddy's includes the platforms that run it for their customers.
Top Competitors by Market Share
Caddy Customers by Company Size & Age
What size companies use Caddy? Very small ones, overwhelmingly. 73.1% of matched companies with a known size have 1 to 10 employees and 18.86% have 11 to 50, so 91.96% have 50 or fewer. Only 172 companies have more than 1,000 staff. In our list of 50, the large ones usually show Caddy on one subdomain, often a help centre or partner directory that a software vendor hosts for them.
Company Size Distribution
Company Age (Founded Decade)
Caddy's matched companies are young. The largest group was founded in the 2010s (41.27%), and 30.78% in the 2020s, so 72.05% date from 2010 or later. 13.87% were founded in the 2000s and 6.16% in the 1990s. Older names in our list show Caddy on a single property: Air Liquide (founded 1902) on a shareholder site and Colgate University (1819) on a financial-aid portal.
What Industries Use Caddy the Most?
Software Development leads at 4.97%, ahead of IT Services and IT Consulting (4.55%), Business Consulting and Services (3.63%) and Technology, Information and Internet (3.59%), based on our enriched company data. The three technology industries add up to 13.11%. Design Services (2.42%) makes the top ten, which fits a base where one site in five is built on Readymag. The ten largest industries add up to 33.92%.
Software companies using Caddy often show it on a subdomain a vendor serves: Transit's help centre runs on Help Scout's Docs, and ShipBob's and Circle's partner directories run on PartnerPage. Universities using Caddy include the University of North Texas on its library site and Stephen F. Austin State University on sfasu.edu, which reports FrankenPHP, a PHP server built on Caddy. Government sites on Caddy include Spain's Ministry of Health and the Comune di Genova's reporting portal, which OpenCity Italia hosts.
Caddy Alternatives & Competitors
Caddy mostly shares domains with other server headers rather than taking them away. Today 19,014 domains show both Caddy and Nginx, and 12,872 of those are Readymag sites, whose responses carry two Server headers, Caddy's and Nginx's. 4,198 domains show Caddy and Apache, 484 LiteSpeed, 262 OpenResty and 233 IIS. We found no real switching in any pair. The OpenResty rows failed on mechanism: as on our IIS profile, the header flips when someone adds or removes a proxy in front of a site that hasn't changed.

Expert Analysis: Caddy Growth Trends & Key Signals for Sales Teams in 2026

Caddy is a small count, and it says more about platforms than about the companies in it. A domain counts here when the Server header in our crawler's response names Caddy. In our October 2026 crawl that's 68,037 domains, 30,685 of them matched to a company, 6th of 70 in Web Servers with 0.47%. On 12 October I took samples and looked up headers and DNS records by hand, because the header alone doesn't tell you who owns the server.
One in five is a Readymag site
The website builder Readymag is on 19.41% of Caddy domains. Its help centre tells customers to point an A record at 54.194.41.141, and all eight Readymag domains I sampled resolved to that address and answered with a Caddy header. Statsig, a feature-flagging tool, shows on 18.7% of Caddy domains for the same reason: it comes with the Readymag pages. A second builder adds more. 6,190 Caddy domains carry the script set we found on SITE123 sites. I checked 15 of them at random, and 13 were SITE123 sites answering through Caddy; the other two didn't respond. Between them, the two builders account for more than a quarter of the count.
Sales signal: on those sites the web server belongs to the builder, not the company. Don't pitch them hosting or a firewall. Sell what the builder leaves out.
The custom-domain layer
The enterprise rows point the same way. Caddy's On-Demand TLS obtains a certificate the first time a new domain connects, and Caddy's own page calls it the secret sauce of many SaaS products that offer custom domains. Our company list bears that out. Of the 50 detection URLs, 18 are subdomains a software vendor serves for the company. Five are help centres on Help Scout's Docs, Serta's, Transit's and Usborne's among them. Three are partner directories on PartnerPage, for ShipBob, Circle and Lighthouse. Two are affiliate portals on GoAffPro, and AppsFlyer's forms subdomain points at Fillout. Each time, the DNS record points at the vendor and the response comes back from Caddy.
"When a big company turns up on a Caddy list, the first thing I check is the CNAME. Often it points at a SaaS vendor that picked Caddy for its custom-domain certificates." - David Thomson, CTO at TechnologyChecker.io
Sales signal: here the account is the SaaS vendor, not its customer. Help-centre, partner-portal and form vendors running Caddy are prospects for certificate monitoring and edge security.
Lost headers aren't lost customers
The count fell from 74,776 in June to 68,037 in October, with the biggest drop, 7,089 domains, between July (74,254) and August (67,165). Part of that is our side: the domains we crawl turn over every month, with dead sites dropping out and new ones added, and our detection signals widen over time. Since we began tracking it in March 2026, 40,656 domains have dropped the Caddy header, and about 2,700 of them still show it on another hostname. A Server header changes whenever someone adds or removes a proxy, so I don't read those drops as companies leaving Caddy. That's why we suppressed the OpenResty switching rows, the same call we made on our IIS profile.
Sales signal: before you treat a vanished Caddy header as a migration, request the domain again and see what answers. Often it's a proxy change or a dead site.
The companies behind the domains
73.1% of matched companies with a known size have 1 to 10 employees, and 91.96% have 50 or fewer. They're young: 72.05% were founded in 2010 or later, 30.78% in the 2020s alone. Software Development leads the industries at 4.97%, and Design Services (2.42%) makes the top ten. Only 172 companies have more than 1,000 staff, and some of them do run Caddy themselves. Air Liquide's shareholder site answers with Caddy in front of Nginx. Coalfire, Tractebel and Lingoda answer from behind Amazon CloudFront, and the University of North Texas library and Spain's Ministry of Health answer with Caddy directly. Stephen F. Austin State University reports FrankenPHP, a PHP application server that embeds Caddy.
Sales signal: the companies running Caddy on their own infrastructure are the list for observability and PKI tools. Filter out the builder and SaaS rows first, or most of your list won't be yours to sell to.
Europe ahead of the US
The United States has the most matched companies, 6,597, but the ten European countries in our top 15 add up to 11,972, 1.8 times as many. Germany (2,844), the United Kingdom (2,604) and France (1,540) lead them, and Sweden (1,061) and Norway (698) rank above Australia (639). I haven't split the European count by platform, so I can't say how much of that lead is Readymag.
Sales signal: for developer-tool vendors with a European sales team, Caddy's base is a better fit than its 0.47% share suggests.
What runs next to Caddy
Across the 66,265 domains in our clean live set, Readymag is on 19.41% and WordPress on only 7.55%. Next.js is on 5.36%, Ruby on Rails 2.43%, Express 2.39% and Laravel 1.18%. Cloudflare fronts 17.17% and Amazon Web Services hosts 5.89%. Fathom (2.5%) and Umami (1.74%), two privacy-focused analytics tools, show up as well. Caddy's own site credits Fathom for its analytics.
"WordPress on 7.55% of a web server's domains is low. Take out the site builders and what's left leans towards apps that developers deploy themselves." - David Thomson, CTO at TechnologyChecker.io
Sales signal: Next.js, Rails and Express sites behind Caddy are the developer-run segment. That's where API and deployment tools will find buyers.
What Caddy costs
The software is free. Caddy is open source under the Apache 2.0 licence on GitHub, where the latest release is v2.11.7, and its README says it gets certificates from ZeroSSL and Let's Encrypt for public names. The project's income comes from sponsorships, which buy support: $25 a month for an individual, $99 for a startup, $999 for a business and $5,900 for an enterprise. The site's copyright line names ZeroSSL.
Sales signal: you can't undercut a free server on price. What a Caddy shop might buy is help running it: support, monitoring, or someone to take the certificates off their hands.
Key takeaways
1. 68,037 domains, 6th of 70 in Web Servers with 0.47%, counted from the Server header, so a floor.
2. About one in five is a Readymag site, and 6,190 more carry SITE123's script set.
3. 18 of our 50 company rows are subdomains a SaaS vendor serves through Caddy.
4. 73.1% of matched companies have 1 to 10 staff, and 72.05% were founded in 2010 or later.
5. The 40,656 header drops since March are hostname turnover, not customers leaving.
Working with the list
Take out Readymag and SITE123 domains first, then check the CNAME on each enterprise row. For the full list of 68,037 Caddy domains with company and stack data, explore TechnologyChecker.io. Our guide to technology detection methods explains why a header detection can name the platform rather than the site owner.
Frequently Asked Questions
Who uses Caddy?
Mostly very small businesses and designers, many through a platform that runs Caddy for them. Our crawl finds a Caddy Server header on 68,037 domains, and 73.1% of matched companies have 1 to 10 staff. About one in five domains is a Readymag site. Named examples include Air Liquide's shareholder site, Coalfire, Lingoda and the University of North Texas library.
How many customers does Caddy have?
There's no customer count to give: Caddy is free and open source, and the paid part is optional support sponsorships. What we can count is domains. Our October 2026 crawl finds 68,037 answering with a Caddy Server header, 30,685 of them matched to a company. When a website builder or SaaS vendor runs Caddy, its customers' domains land in that count too.
What is Caddy's market share?
0.47% of Web Servers, 6th of the 70 technologies we track there, on 68,037 domains in October 2026. Apache (5,365,858) and Nginx (5,101,407) hold most of the category, then LiteSpeed (2,471,028), OpenResty (763,880) and IIS (434,800). The share counts whichever server answers, so platforms such as Readymag, which run Caddy for customers' domains, are part of it.
What are the best alternatives to Caddy?
Nginx is the usual alternative for reverse proxying and static sites, with 5,101,407 domains in our crawl, and Apache, with 5,365,858, is the other long-standing choice. OpenResty adds Lua scripting to Nginx. What sets Caddy apart is HTTPS by default, including certificates issued on demand for customer domains, so check how any alternative handles certificates before you switch.
Which countries use Caddy the most?
By country, the United States leads with 6,597 matched companies, ahead of Germany (2,844), the United Kingdom (2,604) and France (1,540). Taken together, the ten European countries in our top 15 add up to 11,972 companies, 1.8 times the US count, and Sweden (1,061) and Norway (698) both rank above Australia. These counts cover 30,685 matched domains.
What size companies use Caddy?
Mostly very small ones. 73.1% of matched companies with a known size have 1 to 10 employees and 18.86% have 11 to 50, so 91.96% have 50 or fewer. Only 172 companies have more than 1,000 staff, and those usually show Caddy on one subdomain, such as a help centre, partner directory or form run by a software vendor.
How old are companies that use Caddy?
Young. The largest group of matched companies was founded in the 2010s (41.27%), and 30.78% in the 2020s, so 72.05% date from 2010 or later. 13.87% were founded in the 2000s and 6.16% in the 1990s. Older names such as Air Liquide, founded in 1902, appear because one of their properties answers with Caddy.
What is the ideal customer profile for Caddy?
The ideal Caddy customer is: Company Size: 1-10 employees (73.1%), Location: US, Germany, UK, France, Founded: 2010 or later (72.05%), Industry: Software, IT services, design, Hosting: Site builder or SaaS vendor's edge — based on our analysis of 30,685 enriched companies at TechnologyChecker.io.
Is Caddy free to use?
Yes. Caddy is open source under the Apache 2.0 licence, per its GitHub repository, and caddyserver.com calls it free software that relies on sponsorships. Those are optional and buy support: tiers run from $25 a month for individuals to $999 for Business and $5,900 for Enterprise, per its sponsorship page.
Why is Caddy used?
Mostly for automatic HTTPS. Caddy obtains and renews TLS certificates for every site by default, per caddyserver.com, and its On-Demand TLS feature issues certificates during the handshake for domains it hasn't seen before. SaaS products use that to serve customers' custom domains. In our crawl, Readymag sites and help centres on Help Scout's Docs answer with Caddy.
Is Caddy similar to Nginx?
Both serve static files and work as reverse proxies. Caddy is written in Go and turns on automatic HTTPS by default, per its GitHub repository. You'll often find the two together: 19,014 domains in our crawl show both headers today, and 12,872 of those are Readymag sites, whose responses carry a Caddy header and an Nginx header at once.
Is Caddy better than Apache?
It depends on who runs the server. Caddy's case is automatic HTTPS and a short configuration file. Apache's is reach: 5,365,858 domains in our crawl against Caddy's 68,037. For most small sites the hosting plan makes the choice. 4,198 domains show both today, and on some we checked, such as coalfire.com, both headers come back on the same response.
Is Caddy trusted?
Large organisations run it on at least some properties: in our list, Air Liquide, Coalfire, Lingoda, Spain's Ministry of Health and several universities serve sites with a Caddy header. The project is open source and its GitHub repository has more than 77,000 stars. caddyserver.com also says its TLS defaults pass PCI, HIPAA and NIST compliance requirements, a claim the vendor makes for itself.
What is Caddy On-Demand TLS?
A Caddy feature that obtains a certificate during the TLS handshake the first time a new domain connects, with no configuration change. Caddy's On-Demand TLS page calls it the secret sauce of many SaaS products that offer custom domains; the operator sets an endpoint that approves each domain. Help centres and partner directories in our list run this way.
How does TechnologyChecker.io detect Caddy?
From the Server header. When a response to our crawler names Caddy there, the domain counts. That header describes the machine that produced the response, which can belong to a website builder or a SaaS vendor instead of the domain's owner. Operators can strip the header and a proxy in front can overwrite it, so 68,037 is the minimum, not the full number.
