Companies Using IIS

Our October 2026 crawl finds 434,800 domains whose web server announces itself as Microsoft IIS. That's a floor: plenty of IIS sites hide the Server header or sit behind a CDN or proxy that replaces it. Below is the list of companies that use IIS, with size, country, industry and stack. IQVIA and Gap Inc. run it on their main sites; Boeing, PwC and the US State Department run it on surplus sales, recruiting and passport forms.

IIS ranks 5th of the 70 servers we track in Web Servers, with 2.96%, and it usually arrives with Microsoft's framework: 83.12% of IIS domains also run Microsoft ASP.NET. The header also carries a version number, which a plain server count leaves out. 90.75% of versioned IIS domains report IIS 10.0, while 9.25% report a version whose Windows Server release is past the end of Microsoft's support, mostly Windows Server 2012 R2.

IIS Usage Statistics

Our crawl reads 304,677 IIS domains in June 2026, 397,438 in July, 417,636 in August, 430,828 in September and 434,800 in October. The June to July step of 92,761 isn't a wave of new Windows servers. The set of domains we crawl turns over every month, with dead sites dropping out and newly found ones added, and our detection signals widen over time, so that step reflects changes on our side rather than a surge in adoption. Since then the monthly gain has shrunk to 3,972. Since we began tracking IIS in March 2026, 35,737 domains have dropped it, and about one in seven of those still show IIS on another hostname.

List of Companies Using IIS

Our list of companies using IIS names 50 of the 256,439 matched companies, ranked by LinkedIn following. 39 of the 50 were detected on a subdomain rather than the main site, which is how IIS shows up at large organisations: the websites using IIS there are registries, shops, forms and portals. PwC runs it on its Talent Exchange, John Deere on its technical publications store, Xerox on its App Gallery. Among brands that use IIS on the main corporate site, we found IQVIA, Gap Inc., Wesfarmers and Northwestern Medicine.

Which Countries Use IIS the Most?

Which countries use IIS the most? The United States, with 65,713 matched companies, then India (20,019), Italy (19,608), the United Kingdom (17,622), Brazil (16,416) and Turkey (13,846). Italy and Turkey are the ones to notice. On our jsDelivr profile, a footprint more than four and a half times larger, there are 12.73 American companies for every Italian one; on IIS the ratio is 3.35 to one. For Turkey it's 4.75 to one, against 19.83. These counts cover the 256,439 IIS domains we matched to a company.

IIS Market Share Among Web Servers

What is IIS's market share? 2.96% of Web Servers, 5th of the 70 we track, based on our live crawl at TechnologyChecker.io. Apache HTTP Server (5,365,858 domains) and Nginx (5,101,407) each count more than eleven times as many domains, and LiteSpeed (2,471,028) and OpenResty (989,107) also sit above it. Read the IIS share as a floor. IIS 10.0 can stop sending its Server header with one setting, and a site behind a CDN or proxy usually shows that layer's name instead, so the real IIS footprint is larger than 434,800.

IIS Customers by Company Size & Age

What size companies use IIS? Mostly small ones. 55.97% of matched companies with a known size have 1 to 10 employees and 23.62% have 11 to 50, so 79.59% have 50 staff or fewer. The enterprise tail is real, though: 6,420 companies have more than 1,000 employees, 2.8% of the 229,219 with a size band. At those companies IIS usually runs one application rather than the main site, such as Boeing's surplus-sales auctions on investmentrecovery.boeing.com or Analog Devices' online shop.

Company Size Distribution

Company Age (Founded Decade)

The largest group of matched companies was founded in the 2010s (27.77%), then the 2000s (22.48%) and the 1990s (14.95%). Add the older decades and 41.02% were founded before 2000. Only 8.73% date from the 2020s, against 21.57% on our jsDelivr profile, so the businesses behind IIS sites are on the whole older than those behind a general web library.

What Industries Use IIS the Most?

IT Services and IT Consulting leads at 5.04%, then Software Development (4.45%), Retail (4.2%), Real Estate (3.7%) and Construction (3.36%), based on our enriched company data. No industry reaches 5.1%, and the ten charted add up to 31.11% of matched companies. IIS follows Windows and ASP.NET into almost any sector, so industry is a weak filter for this list.

Retail8,813 (4.2%)
Real Estate7,763 (3.7%)

Healthcare organisations using IIS come to 4.17% between Hospitals and Health Care (2.1%) and Medical Practices (2.07%), and the named ones run it on patient and donor systems: Baylor Scott & White on its registration site, Houston Methodist on its giving forms, Northwestern Medicine on www.nm.org. Universities using IIS include Penn State (its registrar), Purdue (housing), Ohio State (undergraduate admissions) and Texas A&M (its campus map). Government agencies on IIS include the US State Department, whose e-forms site carries passport forms, and the State of Ohio's public checkbook.

IIS Alternatives & Competitors

Apache HTTP Server (36.55%) and Nginx (34.75%) lead Web Servers, with LiteSpeed (16.83%), OpenResty (6.74%) and Caddy (0.46%) around IIS's 2.96%, based on our market share data. The Server header is per hostname, so one domain can show two servers: 14,431 domains show IIS and Nginx today, and 13,864 show IIS and Apache. Those pairs fail our switching tests, because most domains ever seen with both still run both. OpenResty passed that test, but it usually sits as a proxy or firewall in front of the origin, so the header changes when that layer is added or removed while the ASP.NET application behind it stays where it was.

Which IIS Versions Do Websites Run?

In the 45 days to 11 October 2026 our crawl recorded an IIS Server header on 418,124 domains, keeping the latest reading for each. 417,301 of them announced one of the seven IIS versions below, and the shares are of those. We left out 720 headers with no version and 103 with other strings, most of them impossible values such as 99.99, 27.87 or 1.19.1 that point to a rewritten or spoofed header. This window differs from the monthly count at the top of the page, so compare shares rather than totals.

IIS 10.0 accounts for 90.75%. It ships with Windows Server 2016, 2019, 2022 and 2025 and reads the same on all four, so the header can't tell us which one a server runs. That matters, because Windows Server 2016 leaves extended support on 12 January 2027. The other 9.25% (38,612 domains) announce an IIS version whose Windows Server release is past the end of extended support: IIS 8.5 (30,751), 7.5 (3,649), 8.0 (3,364), 7.0 (484), 5.0 (186) and 6.0 (178). 34,115 of them, 8.18% of the versioned set, are on IIS 8.0 or 8.5, the Windows Server 2012 generation. Microsoft's support for both ended on 10 October 2023, and the last year of paid Extended Security Updates listed on its lifecycle pages closes on 13 October 2026.

Dates come from Microsoft Learn's lifecycle pages, read on 11 October 2026 and shown in Pacific Time: Internet Information Services (IIS), which says IIS follows the lifecycle of the Windows release it ships with, and the pages for Windows Server 2025, 2022, 2019, 2016, 2012 R2, 2012, 2008 R2, 2008 and 2003. IIS 5.0 shipped with Windows 2000 (Wikipedia) and predates IIS 6.0, the oldest release on the IIS lifecycle page.

Two caveats before reading this as a patching report. First, the versioned set isn't a random sample of IIS servers. IIS 10.0 added a request-filtering attribute, removeServerHeader, that stops the header being sent (Microsoft Learn), and older releases have no built-in switch for it. Sites behind a CDN or proxy usually show that layer's name instead. So the 434,800 headline is a floor, and if anything this table overstates the old-version share among all IIS servers. Second, the version marks the Windows release, not the patch level: a Windows Server 2012 machine enrolled in Extended Security Updates still receives security fixes until that programme ends.

Expert Analysis: IIS Growth Trends & Key Signals for Sales Teams in 2026

David Thomson
David ThomsonCTO, TechnologyChecker

I've spent most of my career on crawlers, and the Server header is one of the oldest signals we read. It's also one of the easiest to lose. A domain counts on this page when its web server answers with Microsoft-IIS, usually followed by a version number. As of our October 2026 crawl that's 434,800 domains, 5th of the 70 web servers we track, and 256,439 of them match a company. Every one of those numbers is a floor, and the version number is where this profile gets useful.

Why the count is a floor

IIS 10.0 can drop the Server header with a single request-filtering attribute, removeServerHeader, which Microsoft added in that release. Put a CDN, a load balancer or an application gateway in front, and visitors see that layer's name instead. When I re-checked the top 15 rows of our company list in October, two answered with an Akamai header, though our crawler had seen IIS on both. Some large Windows estates won't show up here at all.

Sales signal: treat an IIS detection as confirmed and its absence as unknown. If an account matters, look at its application subdomains, where we find IIS far more often than on the homepage.

Growth trajectory

The chart reads 304,677 in June 2026, then 397,438, 417,636, 430,828 and 434,800 in October. Don't read the June to July jump as a Windows revival. The domain set we crawl turns over every month, with dead sites dropping out and new ones added, and our detection signals widen over time; both moved that month. Since then the monthly gain has fallen from 20,198 to 3,972. Since March 2026, 35,737 domains have dropped IIS, and about one in seven of those still show it on another hostname, so the real exits are fewer.

"IIS is a small slice of the public web, 2.96% of the servers we track, but it's still the server of the back office. Registries, forms, portals and order systems are where we keep finding it." - David Thomson, CTO at TechnologyChecker.io

Sales signal: this is a steady installed base of about 435,000 domains, not a growing one. Sell to what it runs and what it needs replaced.

Who runs IIS

The size split surprises people who think of IIS as an enterprise server. 55.97% of matched companies have 1 to 10 employees and 79.59% have 50 or fewer. The enterprise tail is still large: 6,420 companies above 1,000 staff. At those, IIS lives on applications. 39 of the 50 companies in our top list were detected on a subdomain: Boeing's surplus-sales auctions, PwC's Talent Exchange, the US State Department's passport and e-forms site, Ohio's public checkbook, Penn State's registrar. IQVIA, Gap Inc., Wesfarmers and Northwestern Medicine run it on the main site. The companies are older, too: 41.02% of matched companies were founded before 2000 and only 8.73% in the 2020s.

Sales signal: at large accounts the IIS owner is usually an application team (admissions, procurement, HR, patient registration), not the web team. Find the application first, then its owner.

Italy, Turkey and India

The United States leads with 65,713 matched companies, but the next places are unusual. India has 20,019, Italy 19,608, the United Kingdom 17,622, Brazil 16,416 and Turkey 13,846. On our jsDelivr profile the US has 12.73 companies for every Italian one; on IIS it's 3.35, and for Turkey 4.75 against 19.83. Industry is flat by comparison. IT services leads at 5.04% and software at 4.45%, and no sector reaches 5.1%. Healthcare adds up to 4.17% across hospitals and medical practices, and it's the sector where named accounts run IIS on patient-facing systems such as registration and giving forms.

Sales signal: for Windows Server migration or .NET modernisation, Italy, Turkey and India hold proportionally more IIS sites than they do jsDelivr sites. Localise there first.

No clean switching corridor

We test every server pair for switching, and only one got through. The Server header is per hostname, so one domain can legitimately show two servers: 14,431 domains show IIS and Nginx today, and 13,864 IIS and Apache. Most domains ever seen with IIS and one of these still run both, which describes a mixed setup, not a migration. OpenResty passed, and we still didn't publish it: it usually sits as a proxy or firewall in front of the origin. When that layer is added or removed the header flips, while the application behind it stays put. 83% of the IIS sites in that corridor run ASP.NET, and their page titles include "Redirecting..." and "502 Bad Gateway".

"When a Server header changes from IIS to OpenResty, the application usually hasn't moved. Someone put a proxy in front of it." - David Thomson, CTO at TechnologyChecker.io

Sales signal: don't build a "leaving IIS" list from header changes. A new proxy in front of an ASP.NET app is a security or performance project, and that's the conversation to have.

The stack: ASP.NET first

Of the 439,702 live IIS domains left after we removed for-sale and gambling pages, 83.12% run Microsoft ASP.NET and 1.3% run Blazor. Google Analytics is on 48.08%. Public JavaScript CDNs are common: cdnjs on 18.72%, jsDelivr on 13.69%, Google Hosted Libraries on 11.62%. WordPress appears on 11.69%, but the stack is read per domain, so a WordPress blog may run on a different server from the IIS application. Consent tools are thin. Cookie Control (1.99%) and Cookiebot (1.88%) lead, and OneTrust is on 0.94%.

Sales signal: none of the consent managers we chart reaches 2% of IIS domains. For consent vendors and privacy consultancies, an ASP.NET site with no consent banner is a short, specific pitch.

The version table as a prospect list

The version table further down this page is the part I'd act on. Of the 417,301 domains that announce one of the seven IIS versions, 38,612 (9.25%) report a release whose Windows Server is past the end of extended support. 34,115 of them are on IIS 8.0 or 8.5, the Windows Server 2012 generation. Microsoft ended support for those on 10 October 2023, and the last year of paid Extended Security Updates on its lifecycle pages closes on 13 October 2026. IIS 10.0 hides another deadline: Windows Server 2016 leaves extended support on 12 January 2027, and its header looks the same as 2019's or 2025's.

Sales signal: the 34,115 domains on Windows Server 2012-era IIS are the clearest upgrade and migration list in this data. Open with the support date. It's public, and the owner can check it in a minute.

Key takeaways

1. 434,800 domains, 5th of 70 web servers, and a floor, because IIS 10.0 can hide its header.

2. 83.12% of IIS domains run ASP.NET. The server follows the framework.

3. Small companies dominate (79.59% have 50 staff or fewer), while large accounts run IIS on application subdomains.

4. Italy and Turkey carry far more weight here than on a general web library such as jsDelivr.

5. 9.25% of versioned domains announce an IIS release past end of support, 34,115 of them from the Windows Server 2012 generation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who uses IIS?

Mostly small and mid-sized companies running ASP.NET sites, plus a long enterprise tail. Our October 2026 crawl finds IIS on 434,800 domains; 79.59% of matched companies have 50 or fewer staff and 6,420 have more than 1,000. Named examples include IQVIA and Gap Inc. on their main sites, Boeing's surplus-sales site, PwC's Talent Exchange and the US State Department's e-forms.

How many customers does IIS have?

IIS has no customers in the usual sense: it's part of Windows, so there's nothing to sign up for. Our October 2026 crawl counts 434,800 domains whose server announces itself as IIS, and 256,439 of them match a company. Treat that as a floor, because many IIS sites hide the header. Since March 2026, 35,737 domains have dropped IIS.

What is IIS's market share?

2.96% of the Web Servers category, 5th of the 70 servers we track, on 434,800 domains. Apache HTTP Server (36.55%) and Nginx (34.75%) lead, followed by LiteSpeed (16.83%) and OpenResty (6.74%). Treat the IIS figure as a floor: IIS 10.0 can switch its Server header off, and a site behind a CDN usually shows the CDN's name instead.

What are the best alternatives to IIS?

For ASP.NET Core apps, Microsoft's own answer is Kestrel, the cross-platform server its project templates use by default. For static sites or PHP, Nginx and Apache HTTP Server are the usual picks, and LiteSpeed is the third-largest server in our data. Many teams run more than one: 14,431 domains show IIS and Nginx on different hostnames, and 13,864 show IIS and Apache.

Which countries use IIS the most?

The United States, with 65,713 matched companies, then India (20,019), Italy (19,608), the United Kingdom (17,622), Brazil (16,416) and Turkey (13,846). Italy and Turkey rank much higher than on our jsDelivr profile: IIS has one Italian company for every 3.35 American ones, against one for every 12.73 on jsDelivr. These counts cover the 256,439 IIS domains we matched to a company.

What size companies use IIS?

Mostly small ones. 55.97% of matched companies with a known size have 1 to 10 employees and 23.62% have 11 to 50, so 79.59% have 50 staff or fewer. 6,420 companies have more than 1,000 employees, and at those IIS usually runs a single application, such as Boeing's surplus-sales site, Penn State's registrar or Analog Devices' online shop.

How old are companies that use IIS?

Older than the companies on our jsDelivr profile. The largest group was founded in the 2010s (27.77%), then the 2000s (22.48%), but 41.02% were founded before 2000. Only 8.73% date from the 2020s, against 21.57% for jsDelivr. That fits a server that usually arrives with an established Windows and ASP.NET setup rather than a new build.

What is the ideal customer profile for IIS?

The ideal IIS customer is: Company Size: 1-10 employees (55.97%), Location: US, India, Italy, UK, Founded: 2010s, but 41.02% before 2000, Industry: IT services, software and retail, Site stack: ASP.NET on IIS 10.0 — based on our analysis of 256,439 enriched companies at TechnologyChecker.io.

Does anyone still use IIS?

Yes. Our October 2026 crawl finds 434,800 domains announcing IIS in their Server header, and the real number is higher because many IIS sites hide it. Most are ASP.NET applications: 83.12% of IIS domains also run Microsoft ASP.NET. At large organisations it often runs forms, registries and portals rather than the homepage, which is why it's easy to overlook.

What is the newest version of IIS?

IIS 10.0. Microsoft ships it with Windows Server 2016, 2019, 2022 and 2025, and with Windows 10, and the version number hasn't changed across those releases. In our crawl, 90.75% of domains that announce an IIS version report 10.0. Because all four Windows Server releases send the same header, we can't tell from outside which one a server runs.

Which IIS versions are out of support?

Every release before IIS 10.0. Microsoft Learn says IIS follows the lifecycle of the Windows release it ships with. IIS 8.0 and 8.5 (Windows Server 2012 and 2012 R2) left support on 10 October 2023, with paid Extended Security Updates until 13 October 2026. IIS 7.0 and 7.5 ended on 14 January 2020. Together, older versions make up 9.25% of versioned IIS domains.

Is IIS better than Apache?

Neither wins every job. IIS is the natural host for ASP.NET applications on Windows Server, and Apache HTTP Server is open source and runs on most operating systems. By footprint Apache is far larger: 5,365,858 domains in our Web Servers data against 434,800 for IIS. On IIS domains, 83.12% run ASP.NET, which shows where IIS still earns its place.

What is replacing IIS?

For new .NET work, Kestrel. Microsoft Learn calls it the recommended server for ASP.NET Core, and it runs on Windows, Linux and macOS, sometimes behind a reverse proxy. Our crawl doesn't show a wholesale move off IIS yet: the IIS to Nginx and IIS to Apache pairs fail our switching checks, because most domains seen with IIS and either one still run both.

What is the Linux equivalent of IIS?

Apache HTTP Server and Nginx are the usual Linux counterparts, with LiteSpeed third. They're the three largest servers in our Web Servers data, on 5,365,858, 5,101,407 and 2,471,028 domains. Mixed setups are common: 14,431 domains show IIS on one hostname and Nginx on another, and 13,864 show IIS alongside Apache, so many organisations run both worlds at once.

Is IIS free?

IIS has no price of its own, because it's part of Windows; Microsoft Learn says it follows the lifecycle of the Windows release it ships with. What you pay for is Windows Server. Microsoft's pricing page lists Windows Server 2025 Standard at a suggested $1,176 and Datacenter at $6,771, each for a 16-core licence, plus client access licences where they apply. Checked 11 October 2026.

What is IIS used for?

Mainly for hosting ASP.NET applications on Windows. In our crawl, 83.12% of IIS domains also run Microsoft ASP.NET and 1.3% run Blazor. At big organisations it tends to run line-of-business applications: Boeing's surplus-sales auctions, the US State Department's passport forms, Ohio's public checkbook and John Deere's technical information store, all checked in October 2026.
