Companies Using Zendesk

Zendesk is the most widely detected help desk platform on the web, and one of the most widely detected business applications of any kind. We currently find it on 113,696 domains, which is roughly 18 times the footprint of its nearest genuine competitor. Most of that presence is visible as a help centre sitting on its own subdomain, the help.company.com or support.company.com address that a business points customers to when they have a question.

Two things about this install base are worth knowing before you use the numbers. The first is that it is much smaller than its reputation suggests: 85% of the companies we can size have fewer than 200 employees, so this is a small business product that large organisations also buy, not the other way round. The second is that our count is a floor. Zendesk is detectable through five different signals, and only some of them prove a support widget is actually live on the page, so the named companies on this page come from the narrower group where we saw Zendesk's own scripts load.

Zendesk Usage Statistics

We currently detect Zendesk on 113,696 domains. The series here covers our current crawl and runs from June 2026, when coverage of this signal reached full width, to September 2026. Counts are not a like-for-like series over time: the set of domains we crawl turns over every month, with dead sites dropping out and newly discovered ones added, and our detection signals widen over time. Read the shape as a trend rather than a same-domain comparison. Growth across those four months is steady rather than sharp, about 25% from the June reading, and the widening gap between active and total domains is the ordinary pattern of a large install base where some help centres go quiet without being taken down.

List of Companies Using Zendesk

The named companies below come from a deliberately narrower set than the headline count. We list only domains where we observed the page loading Zendesk's own script hosts, which is the strongest evidence that the product is actually running on the site rather than that an account exists somewhere in the organisation.

There are 113,696 companies and domains where we detect Zendesk, sign up to download the entire Zendesk dataset.

The detection URLs tell the story better than the names do. Upwork answers on support.upwork.com, Ticketmaster on help.ticketmaster.com, the Australian Broadcasting Corporation on help.abc.net.au, Kaseya on helpdesk.kaseya.com. A help centre on its own subdomain is a funded, shipped project with an owner, not a trial. The public sector shows up more than expected: the states of Colorado and Maine, San Francisco Unified School District, IDEA Public Schools and Georgia Tech all run public facing Zendesk properties, and higher education in particular treats the help centre as its front door for student services.

Which Countries Use Zendesk the Most?

United States domains account for 26,889 of the enriched companies, roughly 38% of everything we can place. The United Kingdom follows at 6,516, then Australia at 3,184 and Germany at 3,035. What stands out is the strength of the smaller European markets: the Netherlands, Sweden and Denmark together contribute 4,835 companies, more than Canada and India combined. Support tooling follows English language product documentation first, then Northern Europe, which is a useful ordering for anyone planning territory coverage.

Zendesk Market Share Among Help Desk

Zendesk holds 58.04% of the help desk category we measure, which makes it the largest by a wide margin. One correction belongs on this page: the category's apparent leader in raw data is an entry called Statuspage, and its only detection signal is a generic Atlassian domain verification record rather than anything specific to a status page or a help desk. It returns the same numbers as the top level Atlassian entry, so we exclude it from the ranking here and count the real product, Atlassian Statuspage, separately. Our share figure is calculated against the remaining 62 members of the category.

Zendesk Customers by Company Size & Age

Two thirds of the companies we can size run between 1 and 50 people, and 85% sit under 200. That is not the profile most people expect from a platform known for enterprise service desks, and it reflects how the product is bought: the entry tier is cheap enough for a three person team, and the help centre it produces looks the same from outside as one belonging to a 10,000 person company. The large accounts are still there, 2,712 companies above 1,000 employees, but they are a minority of the footprint and the majority of the revenue.

What Industries Use Zendesk the Most?

Software Development leads at 10.53%, with IT Services and IT Consulting at 8.56% and Retail at 5.68%.

Software Development6,799 (10.53%)
IT Services and IT Consulting5,523 (8.56%)
Retail3,669 (5.68%)
Technology, Information and Internet3,534 (5.47%)
Financial Services3,025 (4.69%)
Retail Apparel and Fashion1,349 (2.09%)

Technology companies occupy the top two positions and 24.56% of the placeable base once Technology, Information and Internet is added. That concentration makes sense for a product whose main artefact is a searchable documentation site: software companies have the most to document and the most inbound questions per customer. Retail and Retail Apparel and Fashion together reach 7.77%, which is the ecommerce side of the base showing up, and it lines up with the Shopify overlap further down this page. Financial Services at 4.69% is the regulated end, where a public help centre doubles as a compliance artefact.

Zendesk Alternatives & Competitors

The category as our corpus defines it mixes support desks with adjacent feedback tooling, so two of the five entries below deserve a caveat. Medallia is an experience management platform, closer to a survey product than a ticketing system, and BugHerd is a bug reporting widget for agencies and their clients. Neither competes for a Zendesk purchase. The genuine rivals in this list are Freshdesk and Help Scout, and the ones our data cannot rank properly sit in other categories: Intercom appears on 1,475 Zendesk domains rather than replacing it, and HubSpot's service tooling is bundled with a CRM purchase rather than bought on its own.

Tech Stack of Zendesk-Powered Websites

Shopify appears on 14.84% of Zendesk domains and HubSpot on 13.98%, which are the two anchors of this base. The ecommerce overlap is the clearest sales signal on the page: a merchant running Shopify plus Zendesk is handling order questions at volume and has already decided to pay for help desk software. The other number worth reading is OpenAI, detected on 6,445 Zendesk domains, or 5.65%, which is the AI answering layer starting to appear beside the help centre rather than replacing it. Zendesk Chat, the company's own messaging product, co-occurs on only 473 domains, so the chat install base and the support install base are close to separate populations.

Zendesk Customer Reviews with Pros and Cons

Zendesk holds 4.3 out of 5 across 7,073 reviews on G2. The rating pattern is consistent: users score it 8.6 for ease of use and 8.6 for meeting requirements, but 8.0 for ease of setup, its weakest score and the one theme that repeats in written reviews. Reviewers praise the ticketing core and the recent automated routing and summary features, and the most common complaints are about configuration effort and features missing from lower tiers rather than about price.

Generated from real user reviews on G2

Pros
  • The ticketing core is the most-cited strength: reviewers describe email, chat and phone landing in one queue the team can actually track, which is the reason most of them bought it.(395 reviews)
  • Day-to-day use scores 8.6 out of 10 for ease of use across more than 5,500 scored reviews, the highest of Zendesk's own rated dimensions.(526 reviews)
  • The help centre deflects repeat questions without agent time, which reviewers running high-volume support treat as the difference between hiring and not hiring.
  • Recent AI features, including automated ticket routing and summary suggestions, draw consistent praise for cutting repetitive work.
  • Complex workflows and detailed reporting hold up at mid-market scale, where reviewers say lighter tools stop being enough.
Cons
  • Ease of setup is its weakest rating at 8.0, below Freshdesk on the same scale and below every other dimension Zendesk is scored on.
  • Configuration effort is the complaint that repeats most in written reviews: reviewers describe reaching value only after a long build.
  • Missing features is the single largest negative tag on the product.(216 reviews)
  • Reviewers report capabilities they expected as standard sitting behind higher pricing tiers, tagged as limited features.(180 reviews)

Expert Analysis: Zendesk Growth Trends & Key Signals for Sales Teams in 2026

Sophie Clarke
Sophie ClarkeProduct Marketing Manager, TechnologyChecker

Zendesk is the largest single technology in the help desk category we track, and the size of the gap is worth stating plainly: 113,696 domains against 6,161 for Help Scout and 5,430 for Freshdesk. In most software categories the leader holds a plurality. Here it holds 58.04%, and the two nearest genuine competitors together account for less than a tenth of what Zendesk does. That is a market where the interesting question is not who wins, but who is left to sell to.

The answer is in the size table, and it contradicts how the product is usually described. Sixty four percent of the companies we can size run fewer than 50 people, and 85% sit under 200. Zendesk is talked about as enterprise service desk software, and the enterprise accounts are real, 2,712 companies above 1,000 employees sit in this base, but numerically the platform is a small business product that large companies also buy. Both facts matter for anyone selling into this install base. A list of Zendesk domains is mostly a list of small teams with a support problem big enough to pay for, and a short list of very large organisations running a public service operation.

The platform's install base is 85% companies under 200 people. The revenue is not, and neither is the switching risk. Those two groups need completely different conversations.

The second thing this data settles is what a Zendesk detection actually means, because the answer changes depending on which signal fired. Our detection reads five different things: script hosts, a JavaScript global, a response header, three cookies, and a DNS record for support email routing. Of the 113,263 domains we currently detect, 26,565 were observed loading Zendesk's own script hosts. That is the cohort where we can say the product is rendering on the page. The rest match on the quieter signals, which prove the organisation has an account and has routed something through it, but do not prove a support widget is live on the site someone is looking at. We treat the full number as a floor on organisations with Zendesk and the script cohort as the census of live deployments, and every company we name on this page comes from the second group.

That distinction is not academic. It changes prospecting. A company matching only on the mail record may have a Zendesk instance behind a login, serving internal IT, with nothing customer facing at all. A company matching on the script host has a help centre that its customers reach, which is a project with a budget line and an owner. If you are selling migration services, integrations or support analytics, the second list converts and the first one wastes calls.

The detection URLs in the named list make the point visually. Upwork answers on support.upwork.com. Ticketmaster runs help.ticketmaster.com. Kaseya, a software company that sells IT service management itself, runs its own partner help desk on helpdesk.kaseya.com. LabCorp, Honda, Logitech, Barnes and Noble and Clarks all follow the same pattern. The subdomain naming is so consistent that it functions as its own signal: when a company decides to publish a help centre, it puts it at help or support, and it keeps it there for years.

The public sector presence surprised us. The states of Colorado and Maine, San Francisco Unified School District, IDEA Public Schools and Georgia Institute of Technology are all in the top forty by company size. Government and education have a structural reason to run public help centres, since their users cannot be turned away and the questions repeat at enormous volume, and both sectors buy on multi year contracts that rarely churn. For a vendor selling anything adjacent to Zendesk, that is the most stable segment in the base.

On competition, the honest reading is that Zendesk is not losing to a rival. We tested every plausible destination against a control, comparing how often a churned Zendesk domain runs a competitor with how often a still active Zendesk domain runs the same competitor. Intercom, HubSpot Chat, Gorgias, Tidio, Freshdesk, Help Scout and Atlassian Statuspage all came back at or below their own base rate, which means domains that dropped Zendesk are no more likely to be running them than domains that kept it. The only corridor that survived the test is LiveChat, and it runs in both directions: 258 domains arrived from LiveChat and 114 left for it. Against an install base of 113,696 that is a rounding error, and we publish it because it is real rather than because it is large.

Seven of eight candidate competitors failed the base rate test. When a platform this size loses a customer, the customer is usually not going to a competitor. They are going quiet.

One corridor we deliberately excluded is worth describing, because it is the kind of artefact that produces confident and wrong analysis. Medallia looked like the strongest destination in the raw data by a wide margin, 441 domains and a rate forty times its base. Checking the cohort dissolved it: 429 of those 435 domains also run Adobe Experience Platform Launch and 391 also run Qualtrics. These are sites sharing one copied tag container, so the three products appear and disappear together as a group. Nobody migrated from a help desk to a survey platform. A shared container churned.

The tech stack overlap is where the commercial reading gets sharper. Shopify sits on 14.84% of Zendesk domains and HubSpot on 13.98%. The Shopify overlap is roughly 16,900 merchants who have both an order volume problem and a demonstrated willingness to pay for support software, which is the cleanest qualified segment on this page. The HubSpot overlap is more interesting strategically, because HubSpot sells a service product of its own and 3,729 of these domains already run HubSpot Chat alongside Zendesk. That is a bundling threat rather than a competitive one, and it will not show up in switching data until a renewal forces the choice.

The last number worth watching is OpenAI, detected on 6,445 Zendesk domains, 5.65% of the base. Right now that reads as companies adding an AI answering layer beside the help centre rather than in place of it. The direction that overlap moves over the next year is the single most useful leading indicator in this category, and it is one we will keep measuring at TechnologyChecker.io as the coverage deepens.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who uses Zendesk?

Mostly small and mid sized companies. Sixty four percent of the businesses we can size have fewer than 50 employees and 85% have fewer than 200. Software, IT services and retail are the three largest industries. Large organisations are present too, including Upwork, Honda, Logitech, Ticketmaster, LabCorp and several US state governments, but they are a small share of the total footprint.

How many customers does Zendesk have?

We detect 113,696 domains running Zendesk across our monthly crawl of live business domains. Company data could be matched for 69,697 of them (61.3%), and every company-size, industry and country breakdown on this page describes that matched subset rather than the full detected base. A further 13,683 domains carried a Zendesk detection previously and no longer do.

What is Zendesk's market share?

Zendesk holds 58.04% of the help desk category we measure, ranking first out of 62 technologies. That excludes an entry called Statuspage whose detection signal is a generic Atlassian domain verification record rather than a help desk signal. The nearest genuine competitors, Help Scout and Freshdesk, sit at 3.15% and 2.77%.

What are the best alternatives to Zendesk?

Freshdesk and Help Scout are the closest direct replacements, both rated slightly higher than Zendesk for ease of setup on G2. Intercom suits product led companies that want messaging first. Smaller teams often use HubSpot's service tools if they already run HubSpot, and open source options such as osTicket and Zammad exist for organisations that want to self host.

Which countries use Zendesk the most?

The United States leads with 26,889 companies, about 38% of everything we can place. The United Kingdom follows at 6,516, then Australia at 3,184 and Germany at 3,035. Northern Europe is unusually strong for a product of this type: the Netherlands, Sweden and Denmark together contribute 4,835 companies, more than Canada and India combined.

What size companies use Zendesk?

Small ones, mostly. Companies with 11 to 50 employees are the single largest group at 33.12%, and those with 1 to 10 follow at 31.21%. Only 2,712 companies in our enriched sample have more than 1,000 employees. The entry pricing tier is affordable for very small teams, and the help centre it produces looks identical from outside to an enterprise one.

How old are companies that use Zendesk?

Companies founded in the 2010s make up 43.91% of the base, with the 2000s next at 20.6%. That skews much younger than most enterprise software, which fits a product that arrived with the first wave of cloud support tools. Older organisations are still present, with 5.4% founded before 1960, and those tend to be the governments, banks and universities in the named list.

What is the ideal customer profile for Zendesk?

A software, IT services or retail company with 11 to 200 employees, founded after 2010, based in the United States, United Kingdom or Australia, running a public help centre on its own subdomain. That combination describes the densest part of the install base and is the profile most likely to already be paying for support tooling.

What exactly does Zendesk do?

Zendesk is customer service software. It collects incoming questions from email, chat, phone and social into a single ticket queue, routes them to agents, and publishes a searchable help centre so customers can answer common questions themselves. Most of what you see from outside is that help centre, usually living on a help or support subdomain.

How many companies use Zendesk?

We currently detect Zendesk on 113,696 domains. Treat that as a floor rather than a customer count: it covers organisations where we can see a Zendesk signal on the public web, and instances running entirely behind a login are invisible to us. Of those domains, 26,565 were observed loading Zendesk's own scripts, which is the clearest evidence of a live deployment.

Is Zendesk a CRM platform?

Not primarily. Zendesk is built around support tickets rather than sales pipelines, though it does sell a sales product and stores customer records. In practice companies run it alongside a CRM rather than instead of one: we find HubSpot on 13.98% of Zendesk domains and Salesforce on 4.32%, which suggests the two systems usually coexist.

Who is Zendesk's biggest competitor?

By detected footprint in its own category, Help Scout at 6,161 domains and Freshdesk at 5,430. Neither is close: Zendesk is roughly 18 times larger than either. Intercom competes for the same budget but appears alongside Zendesk more often than in place of it, and HubSpot's service tools compete mainly through bundling with a CRM purchase.

Are companies switching away from Zendesk?

Rarely to a competitor. We tested eight plausible destinations against a control group and seven came back at or below their own base rate, meaning domains that dropped Zendesk are no more likely to run those products than domains that kept it. The only real corridor is LiveChat, and it runs both ways: 258 domains came from LiveChat, 114 left for it.

Does a Zendesk detection mean the company is a paying customer?

Not always. Our detection reads five different signals, including a DNS record used to route support email. A DNS match proves an account exists in the organisation, not that a support widget is live on the site. The 26,565 domains where we saw Zendesk's own scripts load are the subset where a working deployment is visible.

How is Zendesk rated by its users?

Zendesk scores 4.3 out of 5 across 7,073 G2 reviews. Users rate it 8.6 for ease of use and 8.6 for meeting requirements, but 8.0 for ease of setup, which is its weakest score and the complaint that recurs most in written reviews. Recent automated ticket routing and summary features draw consistent praise.

How does Zendesk differ from Zendesk Chat?

Zendesk Chat is the live messaging product, originally Zopim, and it is detected separately. The two barely overlap: Zendesk Chat appears on only 473 of the domains where we detect the main Zendesk platform, 0.41% of the base. In practice the chat install base and the support install base are close to separate populations of companies.
