Companies Using SwissSign
Our October 2026 crawl finds 10,230 domains with a SwissSign domain-validation record, a TXT entry of the form swisssign-check= plus a random value. SwissSign, a wholly owned subsidiary of Swiss Post, reads that value before issuing a certificate, and owners rarely delete it afterwards. So the count is domains that validated with SwissSign at least once, a ceiling on current customers. Below is the list of companies that use SwissSign, including Swisscom, SBB, Coop, Baloise and Zürcher Kantonalbank.
SwissSign ranks 3rd in SSL/TLS Certificates with a 4.75% share. Most of the count is history on the homepage: when we connected to a random 1,000 of the domains on 15 October 2026, 77 of the 981 that answered (7.85%) served a SwissSign certificate and 613 served Let's Encrypt. Part of the gap is e-mail: SwissSign also validates domains for S/MIME certificates, which a website check can't see.

SwissSign Usage Statistics
The chart moves from 8,571 domains in June 2026 to 10,230 in October, the headline figure. That is coverage, not growth: the domains we crawl turn over each month as dead sites drop out and new ones are added, and our DNS detection widened over the same months. Exits are rare: 232 domains dropped the record since we began tracking it on 16 March 2026, and a recount on 15 October found 22 of the dropped domains still showing it on another hostname.

Which Countries Use SwissSign the Most?
Which countries use SwissSign the most? Germany, with 4,321 matched companies, slightly ahead of Switzerland with 3,070, then Austria (498) and Liechtenstein (164). Together those four are 8,053 of the 8,504 companies in our country table, 94.7%. The United States has 144. SwissSign is a Swiss CA whose biggest market by count is Germany.
Share of the 8,781 SwissSign domains we matched to a company record — 85.8% of the 10,230 we detect. Top 15 countries shown, so these do not sum to 100%. Domains with no matching company record are not represented here and skew small and independent.
SwissSign Market Share Among SSL/TLS Certificates
What is SwissSign's market share? 4.75% of SSL/TLS Certificates, ranked 3rd on 10,230 domains, based on our crawl at TechnologyChecker.io. The table counts CA validation records and site seals. On live website certificates SwissSign's position is much smaller: in a random 1,000 domains, 77 of 981 answering served a SwissSign certificate, against 613 from Let's Encrypt.

Expert Analysis: SwissSign Growth Trends & Key Signals for Sales Teams in 2026

I run the crawler that reads the DNS of every domain we visit. A domain counts here when a TXT record contains SwissSign, in practice swisssign-check= followed by a random value. Our October 2026 crawl puts that at 10,230 domains, 8,781 matched to a company, 3rd in SSL/TLS Certificates. On 15 October 2026 I re-read the DNS of all 10,240 domains in our clean set and opened a TLS connection to a random 1,000 of them.
What the record proves
SwissSign described the method in a 2018 notice, when CA/Browser Forum rules moved domain validation to technical checks: a random value from SwissSign goes into a file on the web server or into a TXT entry of the domain's DNS zone. The Baseline Requirements keep the value valid for 30 days and cap reuse of a validation at 200 days. 10,115 of the 10,240 domains still carried the record and 2,308 had two or more. Repeated codes are what renewals leave behind: each revalidation adds a new value, and the old one usually stays in the zone, sometimes for years. Eight carry SwissSign's newer persistent format, which its blog says has been available since 17 August 2026.
The rule is a substring, so I checked what else it matches. Nine domains matched without a swisssign-check record, and every one was SwissSign-related: its own mail settings, malformed records, and notes such as 100%SwissSign@Schwarz on three Kaufland domains. Nothing unrelated.
Sales signal: a domain with several codes has validated with SwissSign repeatedly, which points to a Managed PKI account.
How much of it is current
Of the random 1,000, 981 answered. 77 (7.85%) served a SwissSign certificate, 42 OV, 22 DV and 13 EV. Let's Encrypt served 613 (62.49%), Sectigo 80, DigiCert 63 and Google 53. A random 50 gave 5 SwissSign certificates. For a CA with 10,230 domains in our table, that's a small live footprint, and the record count needs reading accordingly.
"Six in ten domains that once validated with SwissSign now serve Let's Encrypt on their website. Some of those accounts are still alive for e-mail, but few for the website." - David Thomson, CTO at TechnologyChecker.io
Sales signal: on the website, SwissSign is mostly a former supplier, so ask each account about e-mail certificates before assuming it has left.
E-mail certificates
SwissSign validates domains for S/MIME too. Its Managed PKI order form lists DV and OV SSL certificates next to S/MIME e-mail IDs, priced in francs per year with a CHF 300 minimum. 824 domains, 8.05%, send mail through SEPPmail's cloud, an e-mail encryption service whose documentation tells administrators to renew the SwissSign domain check with a TXT record. Of the 79 SEPPmail domains in my sample that answered, one served a SwissSign website certificate. Among the 7,027 QuoVadis domains, the same SEPPmail signal is on 27.
Sales signal: for SEPPmail users, the SwissSign relationship is e-mail encryption. Sell website certificates to them as a separate need.
Who and where
Germany has 4,321 matched companies, Switzerland 3,070, Austria 498 and Liechtenstein 164: 94.7% of our country table. 76.83% have 200 or fewer staff and 25.18% were founded before 1960. The live certificates name Swisscom, Coop, SIX Group and the German state of Hesse more than once, and among the 50 largest companies 10 served SwissSign: Swisscom, SBB, Coop, SWISS, Zürcher Kantonalbank, Baloise, Evonik, the cantons of Geneva and Vaud, and Sandvik Coromant.
By country the live rate barely differs: 24 of 274 answering .ch domains and 23 of 383 .de domains served SwissSign, while Let's Encrypt served 203 and 237. The difference is at the top. Among the 50 largest companies, eight of the ten still on SwissSign are Swiss, and the German ones mostly serve DigiCert, Sectigo or Let's Encrypt.
Sales signal: large Swiss institutions are SwissSign's remaining website core. Elsewhere the record marks a past or e-mail-only relationship.
Portfolios
Group domain sets are small next to the count. Lidl has 40 lidl.* domains, the next two groups 33 and 32, and Douglas and one other group 22 each. One validation code covers 21 domains, Douglas's Central and Eastern European shops among them, the only sizeable shared code: 42 codes are shared at all, across 107 domains. Two groups even left notes in DNS: 100%SwissSign@Schwarz on three Kaufland domains, and 100percentSwissSignAtRBS on three banking domains, rbs-services.com, coutts.com and adambank.com.
Sales signal: treat each group as one account; Lidl's 40 domains are one buyer.
No switching to report
We publish no migration table. 232 domains dropped the record since 16 March 2026, and 22 of the dropped domains in a recount still carry it on another hostname. Records accumulate instead: 414 SwissSign domains also carry a QuoVadis record, 404 GlobalSign, 88 TeleSec and 44 D-Trust.
"In Switzerland, QuoVadis and SwissSign records sit side by side on 414 domains. The website certificate settles which one is still being paid." - David Thomson, CTO at TechnologyChecker.io
Sales signal: dual records mean a buyer who has run a tender before. Expect a comparison, not a default renewal.
The stack around it
Across the 10,240 domains, WordPress runs on 31.75%, TYPO3 on 14.6%, Matomo on 13.05%, Google Analytics on 28.49% and Usercentrics on 8.84%. Swiss hosting shows through Hostpoint (3.91%).
The consent layer is telling: Usercentrics and Borlabs Cookie together reach 15.21%, while OneTrust is on 4.2%.
Sales signal: privacy-first German-language buyers. Swiss data residency is SwissSign's pitch, and competitors need an answer to it.

Frequently Asked Questions
Who uses SwissSign?
German and Swiss organisations, mostly: 94.7% of matched companies are in Germany, Switzerland, Austria or Liechtenstein. The list runs from small firms and law practices to Swisscom, SBB, Coop, Zürcher Kantonalbank, Baloise, SWISS and the cantons of Geneva and Vaud, all of which served a SwissSign certificate when we checked on 15 October 2026.
How many customers does SwissSign have?
We count 10,230 domains with a SwissSign validation record in October 2026, not customers. SwissSign's own homepage says more than 10,000 organisations worldwide trust SwissSign. Only 7.85% of the domains we sampled served a SwissSign website certificate, but the record also covers S/MIME e-mail certificates, so current customers number somewhere between the domains serving its website certificate and the 10,230 with a record.
What is SwissSign's market share?
SwissSign holds 4.75% of SSL/TLS Certificates at TechnologyChecker.io, ranked 3rd on 10,230 domains. That table counts CA validation records in DNS and site seals, not live website certificates. In a random sample of 1,000 SwissSign domains, 77 of the 981 that answered served a SwissSign certificate on 15 October 2026, and 613 served Let's Encrypt.
What are the best alternatives to SwissSign?
For website certificates, buyers in the region compare SwissSign with DigiCert and its QuoVadis brand, Sectigo and GlobalSign, and with Let's Encrypt for free DV. On our sample, Let's Encrypt served 613 SwissSign domains, Sectigo 80 and DigiCert 63. For S/MIME and qualified signatures the alternatives are fewer, because those need a provider recognised under Swiss or EU rules.
Which countries use SwissSign the most?
Germany has 4,321 matched companies and Switzerland 3,070, followed by Austria (498) and Liechtenstein (164). Those four make up 94.7% of our country table. The United States has 144, France 44 and the United Kingdom 40. Germany's lead is notable for a Swiss CA. Across all matched companies, three in four have 200 or fewer staff.
What size companies use SwissSign?
34.57% of matched companies have 1 to 10 staff, 23.89% have 11 to 50 and 18.37% have 51 to 200, so 76.83% have 200 or fewer. 9.33% have more than 1,000, including SAP, UBS, Zurich Insurance, Swisscom and SBB. It's a base of small professional firms with a layer of large Swiss and German institutions.
How old are companies that use SwissSign?
Established, mostly. 25.18% of matched companies with a known founding year were founded before 1960, 17.13% in the 2000s, 16.16% in the 1990s and 14.78% in the 2010s. Only 6.38% started in the 2020s. Old Swiss insurers and banks sit beside family-owned groups such as Liebherr, and beside law and accounting practices.
What is the ideal customer profile for SwissSign?
On our data, a German or Swiss organisation with fewer than 200 staff, founded before 2000, in IT services, finance, insurance, law or public administration, running TYPO3 or WordPress with Matomo and Usercentrics. Many need S/MIME e-mail certificates as well as TLS, which is where SwissSign's Managed PKI and gateways such as SEPPmail come in.
Who owns SwissSign?
SwissSign is a wholly owned subsidiary of Swiss Post, according to its about page, and runs its certificate infrastructure entirely in Switzerland, which it sells as digital sovereignty. Besides TLS certificates it issues S/MIME e-mail certificates, qualified electronic signatures and the SwissID identity. On our crawl, 10,230 domains carry its domain-validation record.
How much does a SwissSign certificate cost?
SwissSign's public web shop didn't show us prices we could cite. Its Managed PKI OV order form prices certificates in Swiss francs per year, excluding VAT, with a minimum of CHF 300 a year invoiced, and lists DV SSL Silver, OV SSL Gold and S/MIME certificates side by side. We read the form on 15 October 2026; volume prices come from sales.
What is the swisssign-check TXT record?
It's SwissSign's DNS method of proving domain control: the owner publishes swisssign-check= followed by a random value, and SwissSign checks it before issuing. On 15 October 2026, 10,115 of 10,240 domains still had one and 2,308 had two or more. Eight carried SwissSign's newer persistent record, which it has offered since 17 August 2026.
Why does a SwissSign domain serve a Let's Encrypt certificate?
Usually because the record outlived the certificate, or because SwissSign was used for e-mail. 824 SwissSign domains route mail through SEPPmail's cloud, an e-mail encryption service whose documentation describes SwissSign domain checks; of the 79 in our sample that answered, one served a SwissSign website certificate. Most of the rest serve a free certificate on their website.
Does SwissSign issue S/MIME certificates?
Yes. SwissSign's Managed PKI order form lists Personal S/MIME E-Mail ID Silver, Pro S/MIME E-Mail ID Gold and organisation-validated S/MIME certificates alongside its DV and OV SSL products. A domain validation can serve either kind, which is why the DNS record count is a ceiling on website certificates and a better guide to SwissSign accounts.
