Companies Using D-Trust

Our October 2026 crawl finds 1,927 domains with a D-Trust domain-validation record, a TXT entry of the form D-TRUST= plus a code. D-Trust, the Bundesdruckerei group's certificate authority in Berlin, checks that code before it issues a TLS certificate, and the record usually stays afterwards. So the count is domains that validated with D-Trust at least once, a ceiling on current customers. Below is the list of companies that use D-Trust, including TÜV SÜD, Atruvia, BAMF and the Bundesdruckerei itself.

D-Trust ranks 7th in SSL/TLS Certificates with a 0.89% share. Half the count is one banking group: 968 of the 1,971 domains in our clean set belong to Germany's Volksbanken and Raiffeisenbanken. When we connected to every domain on 15 October 2026, 638 of the 1,959 that answered (32.57%) served a D-Trust certificate, and most cooperative banks had moved to DigiCert's QuoVadis CA.

D-Trust Usage Statistics

The chart rises from 1,647 domains in June 2026 to 1,927 in October, the headline. That's our coverage, not new customers: the domains we crawl turn over each month as dead sites leave and new ones are found, and our DNS detection widened over the same months. Only 11 domains dropped the record since we began tracking it on 16 March 2026, and none still carries it on another hostname. The bigger change sits under the record: most cooperative banks that validated with D-Trust now serve another CA's certificate.

List of Companies Using D-Trust

This list of companies that use D-Trust shows 50 of the 1,652 matched companies, ordered by LinkedIn following. Every row still carried a D-TRUST= record when we read its DNS on 15 October 2026. We removed three E.ON country duplicates and backfilled from the next candidates, and corrected names where LinkedIn had matched a subsidiary, such as BASF Corporation for basf.com. 7 of the 50 homepages served a D-Trust certificate that day.

Expert Analysis: D-Trust Growth Trends & Key Signals for Sales Teams in 2026

David Thomson
David ThomsonCTO, TechnologyChecker

I run the crawler that reads DNS for every domain we visit. A domain counts here when a TXT record contains D-Trust, which in practice is a record of the form D-TRUST= followed by a 23-character code. Our October 2026 crawl puts that at 1,927 domains, 1,652 matched to a company, 7th in SSL/TLS Certificates. On 15 October 2026 I re-read the DNS of all 1,971 domains in our clean set and opened a TLS connection to each.

What the record proves

D-Trust's CSM PKI practice statement records that in 2019 it added the CA/Browser Forum's DNS method, among others, to its domain validation. Under the Baseline Requirements, the random value is valid for 30 days and a validation can be reused for at most 200 days. Owners keep the records long after: nearly all of the 1,971 domains still had one, and 612 had two or more.

The rule is a plain substring, so I checked what else it catches. Five domains matched without a D-TRUST= record: D-Trust's own d-trust.de, through its mail settings, and four unrelated sites whose text happens to contain the string, such as tech-and-trust.com. That's 0.25% of the count.

Sales signal: a D-TRUST= record means the organisation passed a German CA's validation at least once, which in this base usually means OV or EV.

Half the count is one banking group

968 of the 1,971 domains belong to Germany's Volksbanken and Raiffeisenbanken, identified by domain name, LinkedIn match or the bank named on the certificate. They are separate banks, not one subscriber: their certificates carry 549 different organisation names. They share a technology partner, Atruvia, which says on its site that about 650 Volksbanken and Raiffeisenbanken are its customers. That's why banking is 40.59% of the industry chart and 56.19% of matched companies were founded before 1960.

"Half of D-Trust's count is cooperative banks, and most of them now serve a DigiCert certificate. The D-Trust record is what they left behind." - David Thomson, CTO at TechnologyChecker.io

Sales signal: treat the banks as one buying centre with many logos. Certificate decisions here follow the group's platform, not each bank's IT team.

How much of it is current

1,959 domains answered. 638 (32.57%) served a D-Trust certificate, 358 of them EV. DigiCert's QuoVadis CA served 603, Let's Encrypt 386 and Sectigo 89. A random 50 gave 15 D-Trust certificates, close to the full rate. Among the cooperative banks, 398 of 967 answering homepages served D-Trust and 562 served DigiCert's QuoVadis CA; 950 of those bank domains also carry a QuoVadis= validation record. Outside the banks, 240 of 992 answering domains served D-Trust, 24.19%.

Sales signal: D-Trust's banking base is mid-move. The banks still on D-Trust are the ones a competing CA, or D-Trust itself, will fight for at renewal.

The federal cluster

The largest single subscriber outside the banks is the federal IT centre ITZBund: 92 domains serve D-Trust certificates issued to it, from bamf.de and rki.de to bmel.de and zoll.de. Dataport, a public-sector IT provider, holds 15, and the Bundesdruckerei itself 8. D-Trust has been 100% owned by the Bundesdruckerei since 2010, according to its about page, and the public sector buys accordingly.

Sales signal: public-sector certificates are bought through shared IT providers. Talk to ITZBund or Dataport before any single ministry.

Who else and where

Germany has 1,543 of the 1,619 matched companies. Beyond the banks, the list is German utilities and insurers (E.ON, RWE, Bayernwerk, Westnetz, Signal Iduna, Techniker Krankenkasse), testing groups (TÜV SÜD, TÜV Rheinland) and industrials (BASF, thyssenkrupp, Rheinmetall). Their stack is privacy-minded: OneTrust on 17.45%, Usercentrics on 10.5%, Google Analytics on only 9.08%.

Sales signal: lead with data protection and EU qualification; price comes second for this base.

No switching to report

We publish no migration table for D-Trust: 11 domains dropped the record since 16 March 2026, none still showing it on another hostname. The banks' move to QuoVadis didn't remove anything, because records are additive. 44 domains carry SwissSign records too and 59 carry TeleSec records, the CA of Deutsche Telekom.

"Records pile up in DNS. To see a bank change CA, you have to look at the certificate it serves." - David Thomson, CTO at TechnologyChecker.io

Sales signal: watch the issuer on the live certificate; the records only accumulate. A bank serving QuoVadis today with a D-TRUST= record still in DNS has been a D-Trust customer and may be again.

Where the certificates come from

The issuing CAs tell you what was bought. Of the 638 live D-Trust certificates, 358 came from D-TRUST EV CA 2-23-1 2023, the EV intermediate, and the rest from its BR (OV) intermediates, 2023 and 2020 generations. None came from a DV intermediate. On the cooperative banks, all 562 DigiCert certificates came from one intermediate, DigiCert QuoVadis 2G3 TLS RSA4096 SHA384 2023 CA1, which looks like one decision taken for the whole group. TeleSec, Deutsche Telekom's CA, served 19 of the answering domains, the only other German CA with a visible share.

Sales signal: EV is still bought here, by banks and insurers that want the organisation name in the certificate. Price conversations start from EV, not DV.

What it costs

D-Trust's TLS page lists DV, OV, EV, EV Qualified and PSD2 Qualified certificates and sends price questions to sales; there's no web shop. Larger customers run their certificates through its Certificate Service Manager.

Sales signal: quotes, framework contracts and managed PKI are how this market buys.

Key takeaways

1. 1,927 domains validated with D-Trust; 32.57% of those answering serve its certificate.

2. 968 domains, 49.1%, are cooperative banks, 562 of them now on DigiCert's QuoVadis CA.

3. ITZBund's federal sites are the largest single subscriber, with 92 domains.

4. 95.3% of matched companies are German.

5. The substring rule catches five non-D-Trust records, 0.25%.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who uses D-Trust?

Germany's cooperative banks first: 968 of the 1,971 domains in our clean set are Volksbanken and Raiffeisenbanken. Then federal bodies, with 92 domains serving certificates issued to the federal IT centre ITZBund, and large German companies such as TÜV SÜD, DHL, BASF, E.ON, RWE and thyssenkrupp. All carried a D-TRUST= record when we checked on 15 October 2026.

How many customers does D-Trust have?

We count 1,927 domains with a D-Trust validation record in October 2026, not customers. Behind the 968 cooperative-bank domains are 549 different organisation names on their certificates, and the federal sites share one subscriber, ITZBund. On 15 October 2026, 638 of the 1,959 domains that answered served a D-Trust certificate.

What is D-Trust's market share?

D-Trust holds 0.89% of SSL/TLS Certificates at TechnologyChecker.io, ranked 7th on 1,927 domains. The table counts CA validation records in DNS and site seals, not certificates in use. When we checked live certificates on 15 October 2026, D-Trust issued 638 of 1,959, a 32.57% rate, below GlobalSign's 36.16% on the same test.

What are the best alternatives to D-Trust?

In Germany the closest alternatives are DigiCert, whose QuoVadis CA now serves 562 cooperative-bank homepages that once validated with D-Trust, and TeleSec, Deutsche Telekom's CA. GlobalSign and SwissSign also sell OV and EV certificates in the region. For qualified website certificates (QWACs), buyers need an eIDAS-qualified provider; D-Trust is one of them.

Which countries use D-Trust the most?

Germany, with 1,543 of the 1,619 matched companies in our country table, or 95.3%. The United States has 15, Switzerland 12, the Netherlands 8 and Poland and Austria 7 each, most of them foreign sites of German groups. D-Trust is part of the Bundesdruckerei group in Berlin, and its customers are German organisations almost without exception.

What size companies use D-Trust?

29.96% of matched companies have 1 to 10 staff, 21.29% have 11 to 50, 19.19% have 51 to 200 and 15.05% have 201 to 500. That 201 to 500 band is high for a CA page, and it's the regional banks. 8.87% have more than 1,000 staff, among them TÜV SÜD, DHL, BASF and thyssenkrupp.

How old are companies that use D-Trust?

Old. 56.19% of matched companies with a known founding year were founded before 1960, in a base where banks make up 40.59% of companies and insurers and utilities much of the rest. The 2000s and 2010s add 10.18% each, the 1990s 9.66%, and only 5.54% started in the 2020s. Expect long-established German institutions, not start-ups.

What is the ideal customer profile for D-Trust?

On our data, a German bank, insurer, utility or public body founded before 1960, with 50 to 500 staff, that needs EV or eIDAS-qualified certificates and runs TYPO3 or WordPress with OneTrust or Usercentrics consent. Germany's cooperative banks are the template, and federal agencies through ITZBund are the second group.

Who owns D-Trust?

D-Trust GmbH is part of the Bundesdruckerei group, which took a 100% stake in it in 2010, according to D-Trust's own about page. It was founded in 1998 and is based in Berlin. The Bundesdruckerei's own domain, bundesdruckerei.de, carries a D-TRUST= record and served a D-Trust certificate when we checked on 15 October 2026.

What certificates does D-Trust sell?

D-Trust's TLS page lists TLS DV ID, TLS OV ID, TLS EV ID, TLS EV Qualified ID and PSD2 TLS Qualified ID certificates, the qualified ones being eIDAS QWACs. On our live check, 358 of the 638 D-Trust certificates came from its EV issuing CA, which matches a base of banks and public bodies that buy higher validation levels.

How much does a D-Trust SSL certificate cost?

D-Trust doesn't publish TLS prices: its TLS page offers advice through its sales team, and its public price list covers signature cards rather than website certificates. Customers who issue many certificates manage them through D-Trust's Certificate Service Manager, a managed PKI. Expect enterprise quotes rather than a web shop. We checked both pages on 15 October 2026.

What is the D-TRUST= TXT record?

It's D-Trust's DNS check of domain control: the owner publishes D-TRUST= and a code in a TXT record, and D-Trust reads it before issuing. D-Trust added this DNS method to its CSM PKI practice statement in 2019. On 15 October 2026, nearly all of the 1,971 domains still had one, and 612 had two or more.

Why do German banks have D-Trust and QuoVadis records?

Because they validated with both. On 15 October 2026, 1,151 D-Trust domains also carried a QuoVadis= record, 950 of them cooperative banks, and of the 967 bank domains that answered, 562 served a DigiCert QuoVadis certificate and 398 a D-Trust one. The banks' sites are run with Atruvia, the group's technology partner for about 650 banks.
