Companies Using Mastodon
Our November 2026 crawl finds 1,679 domains running a Mastodon server. A domain counts when it answers with Server: Mastodon, a header Mastodon's own production configuration sets, or with Mastodon's _mastodon_session cookie. Each one is an instance: a server that hosts accounts and serves the Mastodon web interface. Below is the list of companies using Mastodon in that sense, with size, country, industry and stack.
Sites that only link to a Mastodon profile, embed a feed or carry a rel="me" verification link don't count, because the rule reads response headers and cookies that those pages never send. In a random 40 domains we re-requested on 6 November 2026, all 40 were Mastodon servers and none was an embed. Most are small: the median server reported 3 active users in the past month. Organisations run their own on a subdomain, and the count credits the parent domain: 36 of the 50 companies below use social.. Brands that use Mastodon this way include the City of Amsterdam, EPFL, Heise and Wikimedia Deutschland.
Mastodon ranks 12th of 63 rows in Community & Comments with 0.56%. That category is mostly comment widgets and forum software, so the share compares unlike things.

Mastodon Usage Statistics
The line reads 504 domains in June 2026, 1,350 in July, 1,610 in August, 1,681 in September, 1,675 in October and 1,688 in November. The early climb is our crawl, not a wave of new servers: the set of domains we crawl turns over every month, with dead sites dropping out and newly found ones added, and our detection signals widen over time, so this isn't a same-domain series. The chart uses raw monthly counts; the 3 pages we remove don't change it. Since tracking began on 16 March 2026, 76 domains stopped answering as Mastodon on every hostname.

Which Countries Use Mastodon the Most?
Which countries use Mastodon the most? The United States, with 45 of the 179 companies we matched, then Germany (33), France (20), the United Kingdom (18) and the Netherlands (12). European countries in the top 15 add up to 105, well over half the matched list. Public bodies drive part of that: the City of Amsterdam, the City of Blois, the state of Schleswig-Holstein and France's digital directorate all run their own servers.
Share of the 179 Mastodon domains we matched to a company record — 10.7% of the 1,679 we detect. Top 15 countries shown, so these do not sum to 100%. Domains with no matching company record are not represented here and skew small and independent.
Mastodon Market Share Among Community & Comments
What is Mastodon's market share? 0.56% of Community & Comments, 12th of 63 rows, on the cleaned 1,679 domains at TechnologyChecker.io. Livefyre takes 80.15% and Disqus 4.47%, both comment widgets, and the forum packages XenForo (8,092 domains) and phpBB (7,040) follow. Mastodon's share counts domains that host a server, not how many people use Mastodon, and Reddit (2,007 domains) is the other social platform in the table.
Top Competitors by Market Share
Mastodon Customers by Company Size & Age
What size companies use Mastodon? Mostly small. 64.53% of matched companies with a known size have 1 to 10 employees and 22.67% have 11 to 50. 13 have more than 500 staff, including public bodies, universities and research centres such as the City of Amsterdam, Forschungszentrum Jülich and the University of Innsbruck, which run a server for their official accounts or staff.
Company Size Distribution
Company Age (Founded Decade)
41.73% of matched companies with a founding year started in the 2010s, 23.62% in the 2000s and 18.9% in the 2020s, a young tilt that fits the software and open-source groups on the list. 15.75% predate 2000, including cities, universities and publishers such as the City of Amsterdam, EPFL and De Groene Amsterdammer.
What Industries Use Mastodon the Most?
Software Development leads at 25.23%, then Technology, Information and Internet (23.36%) and IT Services and IT Consulting (21.5%), together 70.09% of matched companies with an industry, based on our enriched company data. Non-profits (5.61%), higher education and civic organisations (4.67% each) and security firms (3.74%) make up most of the rest.
Software companies using Mastodon run their own branded servers: XWiki, Codethink, Ferrous Systems and Omni Group all do. Publishers and newsrooms on Mastodon include Heise Medien, Follow the Money, De Groene Amsterdammer and The Markup. Governments using Mastodon include the City of Amsterdam, the City of Blois and the state of Schleswig-Holstein, based on our enriched company data.
Mastodon Alternatives & Competitors
Mastodon's neighbours in this table aren't like-for-like. Livefyre (80.15%) and Disqus (4.47%) are comment widgets, and XenForo (8,092 domains), phpBB (7,040) and Discourse (4,160) are forum software. Reddit (2,007) is the other social platform. Our rule also counts forks that keep Mastodon's server header: 6 of the 39 servers in our sample that reported a version ran a forked build, such as glitch-soc or Hometown.
Mastodon Customer Migration
We publish one switching pair, and it isn't a product switch. 4 domains dropped a Livefyre detection while gaining a Mastodon server since tracking began on 16 March 2026, 3 of them in the last 30 days and all 4 in the last 90. Livefyre is a comment widget, so this is a domain changing what it hosts, not a community choosing Mastodon over Livefyre. Counts are domains, and 4 is small next to 1,679.

Tech Stack of Mastodon-Powered Websites
Our stack counts read the whole domain, not only the Mastodon host, and it shows. Ruby on Rails appears on only 23.94%, though Mastodon is a Rails application (Rails 8.1 in its current Gemfile), most likely because few servers reveal Rails in their responses. jQuery on 18.23% comes from other sites on the same domains: Mastodon's web interface is built with React and doesn't list jQuery among its dependencies. Nginx (18.76%) and Cloudflare (16.08%) are the commonest layers we see in front.

Expert Analysis: Mastodon Growth Trends & Key Signals for Sales Teams in 2026

I run the crawler, and Mastodon's rule is one of the plainest we have. Mastodon's production configuration sets a Server: Mastodon header on its responses, and we count the domain when we see it or the _mastodon_session cookie. Our November 2026 crawl counts 1,679 domains after removing 3 for-sale and gambling pages, and 179 match a company. On 6 November 2026 I re-requested a random 40.
What a domain means here
All 40 sent the header and served Mastodon's web interface. Only one also set the session cookie, so the header does nearly all the work. A count here is an instance, a server people sign up on, not a site that shows Mastodon content. A page with a Mastodon feed or a rel="me" link sends neither signal, and none turned up in the sample.
Sales signal: every domain on this list operates a server. Someone pays for hosting, moderates and keeps the software current.
Mostly tiny servers
39 of the 40 answered Mastodon's public instance API. The median reported 3 active users in the past month; 13 reported one or none, and only one passed 1,000. 27 had sign-ups closed. At least 6 point their DNS at Masto.host, a managed Mastodon host.
"Most Mastodon domains are one person's or one team's server. The count tells you how many servers exist, not how many people use them." - David Thomson, CTO at TechnologyChecker.io
Sales signal: managed hosting and moderation tools fit this base. Per-seat software doesn't.
Institutions run their own
The matched list is mostly organisations hosting official accounts on a social. subdomain: the City of Amsterdam, France's digital directorate DINUM, the state of Schleswig-Holstein, Heise and Wikimedia Deutschland. Their servers reported between 5 and 35 active users a month when I checked.
Sales signal: these are communications teams running a piece of infrastructure, sometimes through a managed host. Start with whoever owns the organisation's social accounts.
Versions
29 of the 39 ran the 4.7 line; Mastodon shipped 4.7.5 on 3 November 2026. 6 ran a forked build such as glitch-soc or Hometown, which our rule counts because forks keep the header.
Frequently Asked Questions
Who uses Mastodon?
In our data, whoever runs a Mastodon server: individuals and small groups, plus organisations hosting their own. 64.53% of matched companies have 1 to 10 employees, and Software Development (25.23%) leads the industries. Organisations include the City of Amsterdam, EPFL, Heise and Wikimedia Deutschland, all of which served Mastodon from a social. subdomain on 6 November 2026.
How many customers does Mastodon have?
Mastodon has no customers in the usual sense; it's free software. Our November 2026 crawl counts 1,679 domains running a Mastodon server after removing 3 for-sale and gambling pages, and 179 match a company. Since 16 March 2026, 76 domains stopped running it on every hostname. The count is servers, not users: the median server in our sample reported 3 active users a month.
What is Mastodon's market share?
Mastodon holds 0.56% of Community & Comments at TechnologyChecker.io, 12th of 63 rows, on 1,679 cleaned domains. Livefyre (80.15%) and Disqus (4.47%) lead, both comment widgets, followed by forum software such as XenForo and phpBB. The share counts domains hosting a server, so it says nothing about how many people use Mastodon.
What are the best alternatives to Mastodon?
Nothing in our category does the same job. Its rows are comment widgets such as Disqus (13,453 domains), forum software such as XenForo (8,092), phpBB (7,040) and Discourse (4,160), and Reddit (2,007). The one switching pair we publish is 4 domains that dropped Livefyre while gaining Mastodon, which isn't a like-for-like move.
Which countries use Mastodon the most?
The United States, with 45 of the 179 companies we matched, then Germany (33), France (20), the United Kingdom (18) and the Netherlands (12). European countries in the top 15 add up to 105, well over half. Public bodies are part of it: Amsterdam, Blois, Schleswig-Holstein and France's DINUM all run their own servers.
What size companies use Mastodon?
Mostly small. 64.53% of matched companies with a known size have 1 to 10 employees and 22.67% have 11 to 50. 13 have more than 500 staff, including cities, universities and research centres such as Amsterdam, Forschungszentrum Jülich and the University of Innsbruck, which run a server for official accounts or staff.
How old are companies that use Mastodon?
Fairly young. Of matched companies with a founding year, 41.73% started in the 2010s, 23.62% in the 2000s and 18.9% in the 2020s. 15.75% predate 2000, including cities, universities and publishers such as the City of Amsterdam, EPFL and the Dutch weekly De Groene Amsterdammer.
What is the ideal customer profile for Mastodon?
On our data: a software, internet or IT firm with 1 to 10 staff, in the US, Germany, France or the UK, founded in the 2010s, running its own Mastodon server on a social. or mastodon. subdomain, often through a managed host. A second profile is European public bodies and universities hosting official accounts.
What are Mastodon servers?
A Mastodon server, or instance, is one independently run copy of the Mastodon software where people hold accounts. joinmastodon.org says every server is operated by an independent organisation or individual, and accounts on different servers can follow each other. Each domain in our count of 1,679 is one such server.
Can I self-host a Mastodon server?
Yes. joinmastodon.org says that to be in complete control you can create your own server, and the software is free under the AGPL-3.0 licence, per its GitHub repository. Many people do: 13 of the 39 servers in our sample that reported usage had one active user or none. Others use a managed host; at least 6 of our 40 point at Masto.host.
Do people still use Mastodon?
Yes, though most servers are small. 1,679 domains ran a Mastodon server in our November 2026 crawl, and the monthly raw count has held between 1,675 and 1,688 since September. The median server in our random sample reported 3 active users in the past month. Mastodon shipped version 4.7.5 on 3 November 2026 and a 5.0 beta the next day.
What are the biggest Mastodon servers?
Our count is domains, so it can't rank servers by users. In our random 40, only one reported more than 1,000 active users in the past month and the median reported 3. joinmastodon.org's main sign-up button points new users to mastodon.social. The organisations' servers we checked are small, with 5 to 35 active users a month.
Does linking to Mastodon from a website count as using Mastodon?
Not in our data. A rel="me" link, which joinmastodon.org's verification page describes as the way to verify a website on a Mastodon profile, sits in a page's HTML. Our rule reads only the Server: Mastodon header and Mastodon's session cookie, which only a Mastodon server sends. A site that verifies itself or embeds a feed isn't counted.
