Our October 2026 crawl finds 90,494 domains that set a JSESSIONID cookie, the session cookie a Java servlet container issues by default. Below is the list of companies that use Java on a web server, with size, country, industry and stack. Often the Java belongs to a platform the site owner bought: SAP SuccessFactors career sites, ServiceNow help portals, Liferay portals, Duda and Zoho sites, and ColdFusion servers, which run on Java and set the cookie next to their own.

Before counting, we removed 10,872 domains that set the cookie but aren't customers: Chinese lottery and casino fleets, and pages that Alibaba.com, Made-in-China.com and other platforms serve from their own Java servers, as the note at the end of this page explains. What remains is mostly enterprise portals, career sites, government services and school districts, plus small businesses whose site builder runs Java.

Java ranks 2nd of 13 in Programming Languages with 1.66% on the cleaned count, far behind PHP at 97.41%. Each row reads a different signal, so the table compares how often a language identifies itself, not how much code it runs.

Java Usage Statistics

One point: 90,494 live domains in October 2026, counted without the lottery fleets and platform-hosted pages described at the end of this page. We don't chart earlier months because they were counted before that cleaning. Even from here the counts won't be a like-for-like series: the set of domains we crawl turns over every month, with dead sites dropping out and newly found ones added, and our detection signals widen over time. Exits we can count: 10,498 domains dropped the cookie on at least one hostname since we began tracking it on 16 March 2026. That figure covers the whole footprint, fleets included, and 961 of those domains still set it on another hostname.

List of Companies Using Java

Our list of companies using Java names 50 of the 54,211 matched companies, ranked by LinkedIn following. We requested each detection URL on 16 October 2026 and 38 set the cookie for us; most of the rest sat behind bot walls. Most of these brands that use Java do it on one subdomain that a platform runs: Starbucks and Wendy's on ServiceNow help portals, HP and Broadcom on Liferay. The typical websites using Java outside this list are smaller: Duda and Zoho sites, florists on Teleflora, schools on Finalsite.

Java Market Share Among Programming Languages

What is Java's market share? On the cleaned count, 1.66% of Programming Languages, 2nd of 13, based on our live crawl at TechnologyChecker.io. PHP leads with 5,317,281 domains (97.41%), CFML is 3rd with 20,265 and Python 4th with 6,438. The rows read different things: Java a session cookie, PHP headers, cookies and .php addresses, Python a Server banner. So the shares measure how often a language shows itself, and server languages that stay quiet barely register at all.

Java Customers by Company Size & Age

What size companies use Java? By count, small ones: 46.29% of matched companies with a known size have 1 to 10 employees (22,750 of 49,151), and 22.23% have 11 to 50. Yet 4,242 have more than 1,000 staff (8.63%), a heavy enterprise tail for a server signal. The big names usually set the cookie on one subdomain, a careers site or a help portal, while many small firms get it from their platform: 4.74% of the domains are Duda sites and 3,507 sit on Zoho.

Company Size Distribution

Company Age (Founded Decade)

The largest founding decade is the 2010s (23.71%), but the second is pre-1960 (19.22%), 4,885 organisations. Add the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s and 37.57% were founded before 1990. That old tail is banks, insurers, public bodies and school districts, the kind of organisation that built a Java portal and still runs it. 25,422 of the 54,211 matched companies list a founding year.

What Industries Use Java the Most?

Retail leads at 7.28%, then IT services (4.23%), primary and secondary education (3.63%), real estate (3.51%) and government administration (3.37%), based on our enriched company data. Put the three education categories together and they reach 8.88%, more than retail. No industry dominates because the cookie follows whatever Java platform an organisation runs: a school's website host, a retailer's commerce suite, a bank's portal.

Primary and Secondary Education1,661 (3.63%)
Real Estate1,604 (3.51%)
Government Administration1,542 (3.37%)
Software Development1,495 (3.27%)

Banks and insurers using Java include TD Bank, Kotak Mahindra and Zurich, each on a customer-facing portal. Retailers on Java include Family Dollar and Marks & Spencer, both on their main storefronts in our mid-October check. Employers using Java for hiring are a large group of their own: Wipro, Volvo Group, Halliburton and Engie all run SAP SuccessFactors career sites that set the cookie.

Java Alternatives & Competitors

Java's rivals in this table are other languages that name themselves on the wire. PHP (97.41%) is counted from headers, cookies and .php addresses, CFML (0.37%) from ColdFusion's CFID cookie and Python (0.12%) from a Server banner; Dart holds 0.1%. Overlap is large only with CFML: 7,524 domains set both cookies today, because ColdFusion and Lucee run on Java, against 6,082 that run Java and PHP and 38 that run Java and Python.

Java Customer Reviews with Pros and Cons

Across all 33 TrustRadius reviews of the Oracle Java SE listing we read in October 2026, developers pick Java for back ends and accept memory overhead and verbose code as the cost, while eight object to Oracle's licensing changes. All but one predate 2023, so recent releases are not reflected. Reviewers put Java on the server, where our crawl sees it: 90,494 domains set a Java servlet container's JSESSIONID cookie, often through a platform the site owner bought.

Generated from real user reviews on TrustRadius

Pros
  • Reviewers lean on its huge library and framework ecosystem, from Spring to Hibernate, plus a community that answers almost any question.(19 reviews)
  • It is trusted as a stable, secure base for mission-critical systems in banking, healthcare and other enterprise settings.(15 reviews)
  • The JVM's write-once, run-anywhere portability lets teams ship the same build across operating systems and hardware.(12 reviews)
  • Several cite strong runtime performance, from fast execution to efficient multithreaded use of the CPU.(7 reviews)
  • A deep hiring pool makes it easy to find experienced Java developers and trained staff.(3 reviews)
Cons
  • Memory overhead and garbage-collection pauses come up often, along with leaks that are hard to trace.(9 reviews)
  • Oracle's licensing and pricing changes unsettled users, and one moved its product to AdoptOpenJDK while another points cost-minded teams to OpenJDK builds.(8 reviews)
  • Code can feel verbose and slow to adopt modern features compared with Kotlin, Scala or Python.(8 reviews)
  • Its desktop UI toolkits feel dated, with Swing called outdated and JavaFX split out of the core platform.(5 reviews)
  • Slow JVM startup makes it a weaker fit for small tools and serverless functions.(4 reviews)

How We Counted Java Sites

A domain counts here if it sets a JSESSIONID cookie, the default session cookie of Java servlet containers such as Tomcat. Our raw count was 102,714 live domains, and our title filter removed about 1,350 for-sale and gambling pages.

We then removed 10,872 domains that set the cookie but aren't Java customers. 5,260 are Chinese lottery and casino sites in fleets whose titles the filter missed, such as 聚彩网 (927), 中彩网 (822), 彩吧网 (505) and 威尼斯人娱乐场 (394), plus numeric-domain lottery apps whose code carries draw and betting vocabulary; 93.9% of them sit on names containing digits. 119 more are adult-video and torrent-search fleets. The other 5,493 are pages that platforms host on their own domains and that our crawl had stored as separate domains: 4,236 Alibaba.com supplier minisites and 741 on Made-in-China.com in our 16 October census, and tenant or profile pages on AnyDesk, LinkedIn, Okta, Evergage, ServiceNow, Squarespace, HiSupplier, Taiwantrade, Blackboard and Zoho. Those cookies come from the platform's own servers, so we removed every subdomain of those twelve platforms.

Every chart and table on this page uses the remaining 90,494. The 1.66% share and 2nd place are computed on that figure against the category's published total. We chart only October 2026 because earlier monthly totals were counted before the cleaning, and the 10,498 domains that dropped the cookie since March are counted before it too.

Expert Analysis: Java Growth Trends & Key Signals for Sales Teams in 2026

David Thomson
David ThomsonCTO, TechnologyChecker

I run the crawler that records the cookies and headers every domain sends us, and Java is a row I read as a map of platforms rather than a list of Java shops. A domain counts when it sets a JSESSIONID cookie. Our October 2026 crawl puts that at 90,494 domains after cleaning, 2nd of 13 in Programming Languages, with 54,211 matched to a company. On 16 October 2026 I re-requested a random 1% of the domains, 1,038 of them, 917 of which survive the cleaning, with a plain request and then a headless browser, and resolved every address to its network. Our guide to technology detection methods explains how cookie rules work.

What the cookie means

JSESSIONID is the default session cookie of the Java servlet world. Apache Tomcat's context documentation says a context uses the name JSESSIONID unless the application sets another, and products built on a servlet container inherit that default. ColdFusion is the clearest case: it and Lucee, the two CFML engines, run on Java, and 7,524 domains set both the CFID cookie and JSESSIONID today. That is why CFML shares more domains with Java than PHP does, 7,524 against 6,082, though PHP's row is more than 260 times the size of CFML's (5,317,281 against 20,265 domains).

Sales signal: the cookie tells you a Java server answered. Find out whose server it is before you pitch.

Who sets it

Co-detection on the clean set names the platforms. CFML servers, Adobe ColdFusion or Lucee, account for 7,524 domains, and Finalsite's school and district sites are 2.74% of the clean set. Liferay portals hold 5.2%, Duda sites 4.74% and Zoho-hosted sites and help desks 3,507 domains (3.88%). WebWave sites add 1.43%, Salesforce 1,287 domains, ServiceNow portals 1,248, SAP Commerce Cloud 1,137 and Adobe Experience Manager 1,080. Two platforms show up better in the sample than in our rules: 15 of the 917 cleaned domains were SAP SuccessFactors career sites, and 35 (3.82%) were florists' shops on Teleflora's own network. Career sites dominate the top of the company list. Wipro, HCLTech, Volvo Group, Alstom, Halliburton and Engie all load SuccessFactors' recruiting pages, and the cookie comes with them.

"Two in five of the famous names on this page picked a careers vendor or a help desk, and that vendor's servers happen to run Java." - David Thomson, CTO at TechnologyChecker.io

Sales signal: for an enterprise row, the buyer is whoever owns that subdomain, usually HR, customer service or partner marketing, not central IT.

What we removed

Two groups in the raw count would have misled a prospect list, so they're out. Chinese lottery and casino fleets, sites titled 聚彩网 (927), 中彩网 (822), 彩吧网 (505) or 威尼斯人娱乐场 (394), added up to 5,260 domains, 93.9% of them on names containing digits, with 119 adult and torrent-search fleet sites beside them. And 5,493 were hosted pages stored as domains: 4,236 Alibaba.com supplier minisites, 741 on Made-in-China.com, and tenant pages on AnyDesk, Okta, LinkedIn and others. Those cookies came from Alibaba's and the other platforms' own servers. In all, 10,872 domains came out before any chart on this page was drawn.

Sales signal: if you build a Java list from any other source, filter numeric Chinese domains and platform subdomains first, or a tenth of it is noise.

How much of it is current

639 of the 917 cleaned domains (69.68%) set the cookie on a plain homepage visit on 16 October 2026. 121 (13.2%) stopped us at a bot wall, 37 didn't answer and 19 returned an error page, and an application can wait until a visitor logs in or searches before it opens a session, so a homepage visit undercounts. Since we began tracking on 16 March 2026, 10,498 domains dropped the cookie on at least one hostname, fleets included, and 961 of those still set it on another. We chart only October 2026, because earlier months predate the cleaning, and month-to-month comparisons would mix our side in anyway: the set of domains we crawl turns over every month, dead sites out and newly found ones in, and our detection widens.

Sales signal: a dropped cookie is weak churn evidence. Check the other hostnames before you call a domain lost.

Who and where

The United States holds 21,590 of the 54,211 matched companies (39.83%), Germany 3,338, the United Kingdom 2,551 and Canada 2,378. 46.29% of companies with a known size employ 1 to 10 people, yet 4,242 employ more than 1,000. Retail leads industries at 7.28%, and the three education categories together reach 8.88%. The age curve is unusual: 19.22% of companies with a founding year predate 1960, the banks, insurers and public bodies behind long-lived portals such as TD Bank's card selector and Zurich's BlueRoom.

Sales signal: split the list by size. Below 50 staff, sell to the platform's customer, a florist or a small firm on Duda; above 1,000, sell to the team that owns the portal.

We publish no switching rows for Java, because almost every overlap is a domain running two stacks at once. 6,082 domains run Java and PHP today, 38 run Java and Python and 32 run Java and Dart. Of the 7,338 domains that have run Java and PHP together at some point since March, 6,082 (82.9%) still run both. That's one organisation running two servers side by side.

"More than four in five domains that ever ran Java and PHP together still run both. Two stacks under one roof, and neither is leaving." - David Thomson, CTO at TechnologyChecker.io

Sales signal: a domain with both usually has two owners, one per server. Find out which team runs the Java side before you pitch it.

The stack around it

Across the 90,492 clean domains in our stack base, Nginx answers on 26.94% and Apache HTTP Server on 25.28%, mostly as proxies in front of Tomcat or Jetty. Cloudflare fronts 30.54%, JavaServer Pages shows on 4.93% and Microsoft ASP.NET on 6.43%. GoDaddy's 10.59% is mostly DNS rather than hosting: 88 of the 917 cleaned sample domains use GoDaddy's nameservers. On the network side the sample splits across Cloudflare (18.1%), Amazon (15.16%), Microsoft (6.32%) and Google Cloud (4.91%).

Sales signal: nearly a third of these sites are already behind a CDN, so web security and performance offers compete with an incumbent.

What Java costs

Oracle's Java SE Universal Subscription FAQ prices support per employee: $100 a year for 1 to 10 employees, $1,000 for 11 to 100, $10,000 for 101 to 500, and from $10.50 per employee per month at 3,000 or more. The same FAQ says Oracle ships OpenJDK builds under the GPL and the Oracle JDK under its no-fee NFTC terms, which since 20 October 2026 cover Oracle JDK 25 and later only; new Oracle JDK 21 updates moved to the paid OTN license. Nothing in our signal says which JDK a server runs.

Sales signal: Java licensing reviews are a real buying moment for the enterprise tail, but our cookie can't tell you who pays Oracle.

Key takeaways

1. 90,494 domains set JSESSIONID after cleaning; 69.68% of a random 917 did so on a homepage visit on 16 October 2026.

2. We removed 10,872 domains first: gambling, adult and torrent fleets and platform-hosted pages.

3. Platforms set much of the rest: CFML (ColdFusion or Lucee) on 7,524 domains, Liferay on 5.2%, Duda on 4.74%, Zoho on 3,507 domains.

4. Enterprise rows are subdomains: careers, help desks and partner portals.

How to use this list

Segment it by platform. For SuccessFactors career sites, talk to talent acquisition; for ServiceNow portals, to customer service operations; for Liferay, to whoever owns the partner or customer portal. The full list of 90,494 domains, with 54,211 matched companies, is on TechnologyChecker.io.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who uses Java?

On our data, mostly organisations whose web platform runs on Java: SAP SuccessFactors career sites (Wipro, Volvo Group, Halliburton), ServiceNow help portals (Starbucks, Wendy's), Liferay portals (HP, Broadcom) and ColdFusion servers, which set Java's cookie too. 46.29% of matched companies have 1 to 10 staff, often on Duda or Zoho sites. All named companies set the cookie on 16 October 2026.

How many customers does Java have?

We count 90,494 domains setting a JSESSIONID cookie in October 2026, after removing 10,872 that aren't customers: Chinese lottery and casino fleets, and pages that Alibaba.com and other platforms host on their own servers. Those are domains, not buyers of Java. 54,211 match a company record, and 639 of a random 917 cleaned domains set the cookie on our visit.

What is Java's market share?

Java holds 1.66% of Programming Languages at TechnologyChecker.io on the cleaned count, 2nd of 13 behind PHP's 97.41%. The rows don't measure the same thing: Java is counted from its session cookie, PHP from headers, cookies and .php addresses, Python from a Server banner. So the share compares how often a language identifies itself in an HTTP response, which PHP does by default.

What are the best alternatives to Java?

In our Programming Languages table the other self-identifying server languages are PHP on 5,317,281 domains, CFML on 20,265 and Python on 6,438; Dart's 5,483 are Flutter web apps counted in the browser. Few domains swap: 6,082 run Java and PHP today and only 38 run Java and Python. CFML overlaps most, with 7,524 domains, because ColdFusion and Lucee run on Java and set both cookies.

Which countries use Java the most?

The United States, with 21,590 of the 54,211 companies we matched (39.83%), then Germany with 3,338, the United Kingdom with 2,551 and Canada with 2,378. Spain, Australia, Brazil and the Netherlands follow, with China ninth on 1,379. The four English-speaking markets in the top six hold 51.93% of matched companies between them.

What size companies use Java?

Small ones by count, large ones by visibility. 46.29% of matched companies with a known size have 1 to 10 employees and 22.23% have 11 to 50, but 4,242 have more than 1,000 staff, 8.63% of the 49,151 sized companies. The enterprises usually run Java on one subdomain, such as a careers site, partner portal or help desk.

How old are companies that use Java?

Older than most web technologies we track. The 2010s are the largest founding decade at 23.71%, but 19.22% of matched companies with a founding year predate 1960, and 37.57% predate 1990. That tail is banks, insurers, government bodies and school districts that run long-lived Java portals. 25,422 of 54,211 matched companies list a founding year.

What is the ideal customer profile for Java?

There are two. One is an enterprise or public body, often founded before 1990, running a Java portal on a subdomain: careers on SAP SuccessFactors, help desk on ServiceNow, partner site on Liferay. The other is a small business, 1 to 10 staff, whose site builder runs Java for it, such as Duda, Zoho or Teleflora's florist sites.

What websites use Java?

In our October 2026 crawl, 90,494 domains set Java's session cookie once fleets were removed. Recognisable ones include Wipro's and Deutsche Bank's careers sites, Starbucks' and Wendy's ServiceNow help portals, HP's Liferay partner portal, SAP's PartnerEdge portal, Accor's booking site and Family Dollar's storefront. Most are one subdomain of a larger company, run on a platform written in Java.

Is Java still free for commercial use?

Mostly yes. Oracle's Java SE Universal Subscription FAQ says Oracle provides OpenJDK builds under the GPL, and the Oracle JDK under its no-fee NFTC terms, and that the paid subscription doesn't affect either. Since 20 October 2026 those no-fee terms cover Oracle JDK 25 and later only: new Oracle JDK 21 updates, like those for 8, 11 and 17, come under Oracle's OTN license, which needs a subscription for production use. Our JSESSIONID signal can't tell which JDK a server runs, or whether its owner pays Oracle.

How much does a Java license cost?

Oracle prices its Java SE Universal Subscription per employee, according to its FAQ: $100 a year for 1 to 10 employees, $1,000 for 11 to 100 and $10,000 for 101 to 500. Organisations with 3,000 or more employees start at $10.50 per employee per month. OpenJDK builds cost nothing, which is why the subscription is optional.

Is the session ID stored in cookies?

In Java web servers, usually yes. Apache Tomcat's documentation says a context uses the cookie name JSESSIONID unless the application sets another one. That cookie is exactly what we detect. An application can rename it or fall back to putting the session ID in the URL, and then our crawl doesn't count it.

Is Java better than PHP?

Our data can't rank languages, but it shows reach. PHP identifies itself on 5,317,281 domains and Java on 90,494 in October 2026, 97.41% against 1.66% of our category. The two serve different buyers: 8.63% of Java's matched companies have more than 1,000 staff, while 66.61% of PHP's matched companies have 1 to 10, per its profile.

Do web developers use Java?

Yes, but mostly through platforms rather than hand-built sites. Of a random 917 cleaned Java domains we checked in October 2026, the identifiable groups were ColdFusion servers, Zoho, Duda and Liferay sites, SAP SuccessFactors career sites and Teleflora's florist sites. The other three quarters carried no platform fingerprint we recognise, which may be organisations' own Java applications or platforms we don't fingerprint.

Which company uses Java the most?

By domains, the platforms that run Java for others: 7,524 domains run CFML (ColdFusion or Lucee) alongside Java, Liferay is on 5.2% of the cleaned set, Duda on 4.74% and Zoho on 3,507 domains. Alibaba.com's own servers set the cookie on 4,236 supplier pages in our crawl, but we removed those, because they are one company's pages, not 4,236 customers.
