Companies Using W3 Total Cache
Our October 2026 crawl finds W3 Total Cache on 22,193 live domains. A domain counts when its pages answer with an X-Powered-By header naming W3 Total Cache, BoldGrid's WordPress caching plugin. Below is the list of companies that use W3 Total Cache, with size, country, industry and stack. Cimpress, Recordati, Grid Dynamics, Menchie's and Loyola University Chicago are on it.
The plugin doesn't send that header on pages unless an admin turns it on, so the count is a floor; WordPress.org lists W3 Total Cache with 900,000+ active installations. It ranks 5th of the 12 tools in Caching with 0.79%. Roughly 2,600 of the domains, about 12%, got the plugin from a platform rather than choosing it: an old A2 Hosting build, ProSites' dental practice sites and LifeLearn's veterinary sites lead that group.

W3 Total Cache Usage Statistics
W3 Total Cache reads 19,670 domains in June 2026, 22,001 in July, 22,388 in August, 22,757 in September and 22,193 in October. The line moves for two reasons on our side: the set of domains we crawl turns over every month, with dead sites dropping out and new ones added, and our detection widens over time. So the October dip of 564 domains isn't proof of a wave of uninstalls. Since we began tracking it on 16 March 2026, 4,893 domains have dropped W3 Total Cache from at least one hostname, and 508 of them still send the header from another hostname.

Which Countries Use W3 Total Cache the Most?
Which countries use W3 Total Cache the most? The United States, with 4,614 matched companies, then Germany (1,116), the United Kingdom (1,043), Canada (822) and the Netherlands (682). Germany in second place is unusual for a WordPress speed plugin; NitroPack's profile has it seventh. Italy (531) and France (449) add to the European weight. These counts cover the 14,403 domains we matched to a company.
Share of the 14,403 W3 Total Cache domains we matched to a company record — 64.9% of the 22,193 we detect. Top 15 countries shown, so these do not sum to 100%. Domains with no matching company record are not represented here and skew small and independent.
W3 Total Cache Market Share Among Caching
What is W3 Total Cache's market share? 0.79% of Caching, 5th of the 12 tools we track, based on our crawl at TechnologyChecker.io. The comparison isn't like-for-like. LiteSpeed Cache (1,560,073 domains) and Varnish (455,550) include cache headers that hosts and CDNs send on their own, while W3 Total Cache needs an admin to switch its header on. On that stricter test it still counts 22,193 domains, behind NitroPack's 36,257 and far behind WP Rocket's 718,843.

W3 Total Cache Customers by Company Size & Age
What size companies use W3 Total Cache? Small ones, more than for most speed tools. 65.15% of matched companies with a known size have 1 to 10 employees and 23.63% have 11 to 50, so 88.78% have 50 or fewer staff. Only 116 have more than 1,000 employees, and several of those run it on a news, alumni or annual-report site rather than the main website.
Company Size Distribution
Company Age (Founded Decade)
How old are companies that use W3 Total Cache? The largest group was founded in the 2010s (42.93%), then the 2000s (21.55%) and the 1990s (11.2%). Only 8.21% date from the 2020s, against 14.46% on NitroPack's profile and 28.5% on SpeedyCache's. W3 Total Cache arrived on WordPress.org in 2009, and its users look like companies that built their site years ago and kept it.
What Industries Use W3 Total Cache the Most?
Construction leads at 4.95%, then IT Services and IT Consulting (3.99%), Medical Practices (3.7%) and Advertising Services (3.65%), based on our enriched company data. No industry reaches 5%, and the top ten add up to 30.1%, so the buyer is a small business in almost any sector. Platforms tilt it a little: ProSites' dental sites and LifeLearn's veterinary clinics add hundreds of practices.
Universities using W3 Total Cache include Loyola University Chicago on its news site, Caltech on its alumni site, Western Oregon University, the University of Maribor and Universidad Austral. Healthcare organisations on W3 Total Cache include Regional One Health, KIMS Hospital and Erlanger, on its HealthyU blog. Local governments using W3 Total Cache include Monmouthshire County Council in Wales.
W3 Total Cache Alternatives & Competitors
W3 Total Cache's bigger rivals here mostly sit on the same sites. 790 W3 Total Cache domains also run LiteSpeed Cache today, out of 1,315 ever seen with both, 192 run WP Rocket and 172 sit behind Varnish. Only 3 run NitroPack as well. None of these pairs passes our switching tests: most domains that ever had both still run both, and with NitroPack, 6 domains moved from W3 Total Cache to NitroPack and 3 the other way, too few to count as a switching corridor.

Expert Analysis: W3 Total Cache Growth Trends & Key Signals for Sales Teams in 2026

W3 Total Cache is the oldest plugin in this corner of our Caching table, and our October 2026 crawl reads it from one HTTP header: X-Powered-By: W3 Total Cache. That header appears on 22,193 live domains, 14,403 of them matched to a company, 5th of 12 in Caching. The catch is in the plugin's own code. In W3 Total Cache's configuration defaults, the setting that adds the header to pages is off. Every domain here is one where an admin, or a platform, switched it on. With 900,000+ active installations listed on WordPress.org, our count is a floor, and a particular one: sites set up by someone who went through the settings.
The version number dates the setup
Until June 2026 the header carried the plugin's version. Of the 21,835 live domains with a recent detection, version 2.9.4, the last release before that change, leads with 1,619. 8,847 (40.52%) send no version at all, which W3 Total Cache has done since 2.10.0 came out on 24 June 2026, so most of those are sites that keep updating. At the other end, 3,635 (16.65%) report a version from before 2.0.0, released in December 2020. The plugin can also write the header into .htaccess or nginx rules, so an old number may describe a configuration nobody has saved since rather than the code running today. The gap matters more since June: 2.10.0 was a security release, and NIST lists CVE-2026-57623, an unauthenticated code-execution flaw scored 9.0, for every version up to 2.9.4. That covers all 12,988 domains (59.48%) whose header still prints a version, as far as the header reflects the code they run.
"One W3 Total Cache site in six still reports a version from before 2021. For a plugin that sits in front of every page, that's a maintenance gap anyone can see from outside." - Mehmet Suleyman, CEO & Co-founder at TechnologyChecker.io
Sales signal: the version is a filter. Every domain that still prints a version is in the CVE-2026-57623 range, so all of them are leads for WordPress maintenance and security agencies, the 0.x and early 2.x builds first. Domains with no version have updated since June, but not necessarily since: releases before 2.10.5 carry CVE-2026-18051, scored 10.0.
Platforms that installed it for their clients
About 2,600 domains got W3 Total Cache from a platform rather than an owner. The biggest group reports a build number WordPress.org never published: 1,207 live domains, 717 of them on A2 Hosting's network. A2's own A2 Optimized WP plugin required W3 Total Cache until its version 2.1, so this is almost certainly A2's copy, left in place. Next is ProSites, a dental website and marketing company, whose sites account for 692 domains (3.14%). Then LifeLearn, which builds sites for veterinary practices: 534 domains with veterinary titles report the same plugin version from a handful of Amazon and Oracle cloud servers, and the six I opened all loaded LifeLearn's site files. A single server in Montana carries 171 local newspapers and press associations, all on 2.8.5.
Sales signal: for those 2,600 domains the buyer is the platform. A dental practice on ProSites won't swap its cache plugin, but ProSites might, so sell to the platform or skip these rows.
Small, established and quite European
65.15% of matched companies with a known size have 1 to 10 employees and 88.78% have 50 or fewer. The 2010s are the biggest founding decade (42.93%), and only 8.21% were founded in the 2020s, against 14.46% on NitroPack's profile and 28.5% on SpeedyCache's. The United States leads with 4,614 matched companies, but Germany is second with 1,116, ahead of the United Kingdom (1,043). The Netherlands (682), Italy (531) and France (449) add more European weight than LiteSpeed Cache, NitroPack or SpeedyCache show.
Sales signal: W3 Total Cache marks older small-business sites that someone set up carefully and then left alone. German and Dutch agencies selling rebuilds or care plans will find a well-qualified list here.
Large organisations use it on side sites
Only 116 matched companies have more than 1,000 staff. Some run it on the main site: Cimpress, Recordati and Grid Dynamics all sent the header from their home pages. Others keep it on a secondary property. Loyola University Chicago uses it on its news site, Caltech on its alumni site, the American Enterprise Institute on its annual report and Erlanger on its HealthyU blog.
Sales signal: at large organisations, look for the team that owns the microsite. The central web team may have no idea W3 Total Cache is running.
Stacked with other caches, not swapped
790 W3 Total Cache domains also run LiteSpeed Cache today, out of 1,315 ever seen with both. Another 192 run WP Rocket, 172 sit behind Varnish and 3 run NitroPack. None of these pairs passes our switching tests, NitroPack included (6 domains moved from W3 Total Cache to NitroPack and 3 the other way, too few to count as a switching corridor), so we publish no migration table. Since we began tracking on 16 March 2026, 4,893 domains have dropped W3 Total Cache from at least one hostname, and 508 of them still send the header from another one.
"W3 Total Cache doesn't lose sites to one rival in our data. Domains that drop it don't land on any single competitor often enough to call it a switch." - Mehmet Suleyman, CEO & Co-founder at TechnologyChecker.io
Sales signal: there's no rival to displace here, only an old setup to replace. Lead with a rebuild or a managed host, not a feature comparison.
The stack around it
WordPress runs on 97.18% of W3 Total Cache domains. Apache serves 41.98%, about twice NitroPack's 19.14%, which fits a plugin that writes its rules into Apache's .htaccess files. Cloudflare sits in front of 25.06%. Elementor (17.74%), Divi (7.89%) and WPBakery (5.42%) are the usual builders.
Sales signal: this is Apache shared hosting with a page builder on top. Managed WordPress hosts have an easy story, and so do teams offering a move to a modern stack.
What reviewers say
On WordPress.org, W3 Total Cache has 5,420 ratings: 4,057 five-star and 516 one-star, so 9.5% gave the lowest mark. It's free, and BoldGrid's Pro tier costs $99 a year for one site, $350 for five and $500 for ten (checked 16 October 2026). The many settings that earn it loyal users are also what make it easy to misconfigure, and our version data shows how many sites were configured once and left.
Sales signal: a $99 Pro licence is a small budget line. A plugin or service that removes the configuration work competes on time saved, not price.
What I checked before trusting the count
Across the whole set, 358 domains (1.63%) no longer resolve or show an error, maintenance or suspended page, too few to change the picture. On 16 October I fetched 300 random domains from the set. 218 loaded, and 210 of those (96.3%) still sent the W3 Total Cache header, so the signal holds up; 104 also served the plugin's page-cache comment, which shows it actively caching that page.
Key takeaways
- 22,193 live domains send the header, 0.79% of Caching, 5th of 12: a floor, because the header is off by default.
- 40.52% send no version (2.10 or later); the other 59.48% report 2.9.4 or older, the range of CVE-2026-57623, and 16.65% a build from before 2021.
- About 2,600 domains got the plugin from a platform: A2 Hosting's old build, ProSites and LifeLearn lead.
- 88.78% of matched companies have 50 or fewer staff, and Germany is the second country.
- No switching corridor passes our tests; sites stack it with LiteSpeed Cache instead.
Sales applications
Outreach: "Your site's server still reports W3 Total Cache [version]. We help teams with older WordPress setups like yours move to [your offer] without a rebuild." Use the version only if your data shows it.
Targeting: on TechnologyChecker.io, filter W3 Total Cache domains to 11 or more employees in the United States, Germany or the Netherlands, then drop ProSites, LifeLearn and A2 Hosting rows, whose owners didn't choose the plugin.
Competitive angle: the 790 domains running LiteSpeed Cache beside W3 Total Cache are running two page caches. That's a clean-up conversation, and an opening for a host or performance service.

Mostly very small ones. 65.15% of matched companies with a known size have 1 to 10 employees and 23.63% have 11 to 50, so 88.78% have 50 or fewer staff. Only 116 have more than 1,000 employees, and some of those run it on a secondary site, such as Caltech's alumni pages or Loyola University Chicago's news site.
How old are companies that use W3 Total Cache?
Among matched companies with a known founding year, 42.93% were founded in the 2010s, 21.55% in the 2000s and 11.2% in the 1990s. Only 8.21% date from the 2020s, against 14.46% for NitroPack and 28.5% for SpeedyCache. That fits a plugin first listed on WordPress.org in 2009 and kept on older sites.

Pro adds features such as REST API caching and extra caching statistics, and comes with a 30-day money-back guarantee. Checked 16 October 2026.
What is the best WordPress cache plugin?
It depends on the host. On LiteSpeed servers, LiteSpeed Cache is free and leads our caching table with 1,560,073 domains. WP Rocket (718,843) suits owners who want a paid plugin that works on install. W3 Total Cache suits admins who want every setting and run their own server. Our data counts installs, not speed, so test on your stack.
W3 Total Cache vs WP Rocket: which is better?
They serve different owners. W3 Total Cache is free, with many settings and a Pro tier from $99 a year; WP Rocket is a paid plugin that applies most of its optimisations on activation. Our crawl counts 718,843 WP Rocket domains and 22,193 sending W3 Total Cache's header. 192 domains run both today, and few switch between them.
Is W3 Total Cache still maintained?
Yes. Version 2.11.0 came out on 20 October 2026, and WordPress.org shows it tested up to WordPress 7.1.4. Many sites lag behind, and that matters: NIST lists an unauthenticated code-execution flaw, CVE-2026-57623 (scored 9.0), for every release up to 2.9.4, and every domain whose header still prints a version reports 2.9.4 or older. In our crawl, 16.65% of W3 Total Cache domains still report a version from before 2.0.0, released in December 2020, and 1,207 report 0.9.4.6.4, a build number WordPress.org never published.
Why don't I see a version number in the W3 Total Cache header?
Because W3 Total Cache stopped sending it. From version 2.10.0, a security release in June 2026, the X-Powered-By header reads only W3 Total Cache; the plugin's code says the version belongs on its settings page, not in every response. In our October 2026 crawl, 8,847 live W3 Total Cache domains (40.52%) send the header without a version.
Does W3 Total Cache work with Cloudflare?
Yes. W3 Total Cache's WordPress.org listing names Cloudflare among its CDN integrations and offers an extension for it. In our October 2026 crawl, Cloudflare sits in front of 25.06% of the 22,030 live W3 Total Cache domains in our stack sample, so about one site in four already pairs the plugin with Cloudflare's edge.
