Companies Using Apache APISIX

I run the crawler that stores the response headers of every domain we visit, and Apache APISIX is a row where the header tells you more about the hosting bill than about anyone's architecture. A domain counts when its response carries Server: APISIX, with or without a version, or an X-APISIX-Upstream-Status line. Our October 2026 crawl puts that at 6,183 domains, 6th of 12 rows in Load Balancers & Proxies, with 3,138 matched to a company. On 16 October 2026 I re-requested every hostname in the clean list, 6,278 of them, resolved each address and grouped the answers by network.

What the header says

APISIX is an API gateway. It sits in front of other servers, routes each request, and adds its own name to the reply unless someone turns that off. The project's site calls it an Apache Software Foundation top-level project under the Apache 2.0 licence, and its GitHub repository dates from April 2019. The banner comes in two forms: a bare Server: APISIX, and a versioned one such as APISIX/3.14.1. The second header, X-APISIX-Upstream-Status, appeared on 355 hostnames, and on 312 of them it carried a 5xx code from the server behind the gateway. It mostly marks errors.

Sales signal: the header names the gateway's operator, not the site's buyer. Before you pitch API tooling to a domain on this list, find out who runs the gateway.

Namecheap writes most of it

4,944 of the 6,278 hostnames (78.75%) resolved to Namecheap's network, AS22612, with reverse DNS under rdns.hosting.namecheap.net. 4,824 of them answered with the identical bare Server: APISIX: no version, no other token. Behind the gateway, 3,871 of those domains run LiteSpeed and 2,856 run WordPress. That's a shared-hosting fleet with one gateway configuration rolled across it. The next group is far smaller, and it surprised me. RestoPro, a French builder of restaurant websites, serves 328 hostnames (5.22%) from one OVH address, every one reporting APISIX/3.11.0. Chinese networks (Tencent, Alibaba, China Unicom and others) hold 286 (4.56%), Wegic's AI site builder 53 and aNewSpring's training platform 32.

Sales signal: for most of this list, sell the site owner what a shared package leaves out (the site itself, bookings, payments, marketing), or talk to Namecheap. Gateway software has no buyer here.

How much of it is current

5,958 of the 6,278 hostnames (94.9%) still sent an APISIX header on 16 October 2026, and a separate random draw of 50 gave 48. 57 didn't answer. Live doesn't mean healthy: 325 (5.18%) returned a server error that day, 308 of them on Namecheap, and 30 showed cPanel's suspended-account page. They still pass through the gateway, so they stay in the count. The monthly total went from 2,695 in June to 6,183 in October. Part of that is our side: the set of domains we crawl turns over every month, dead sites out and newly found ones in, and our detection widens. Since tracking began on 16 March 2026, 764 domains dropped the header on at least one hostname, and 36 still send it from another.

Sales signal: a header that is 95% live is a usable filter, but about one site in twenty was broken on the day we looked. Check that it loads before you write.

Who and where

The company data follows the hosting. 68.11% of matched companies with a known size have 1 to 10 employees, and 79.72% were founded in 2010 or later (43.2% in the 2010s, 36.52% in the 2020s). The United States has 959 matched companies, the United Kingdom 202, Canada 178 and Nigeria 170, and 897 of the American and 169 of the Nigerian ones sit on Namecheap. France, with 148, belongs to RestoPro: 122 of them, mostly restaurants. IT services (7.37%) and business consulting (4.99%) lead the industries, and nothing passes 7.37%.

Sales signal: the Namecheap majority is English-speaking micro-business with a real Nigerian, Pakistani and Bangladeshi tail. Price and pitch for that.

The self-run gateways

Take out Namecheap and RestoPro and 806 live hostnames remain. These are organisations running APISIX themselves, and they look nothing like the majority. 414 print a version, on the 3.x line or still on 2.x. The project's GitHub releases list 3.19.0, released 28 September 2026, as the newest. The recognisable names come from here: Shein on us.shein.com (3.15.0), Sina's blog (3.14.1), East Money's Choice data site (3.16.0), Meizu's cart (2.15.1), Bitauto, Synology, SHOPLINE's app store, Hahn Air, Solactive, ZDF's press portal and BIDV Securities' trading site. China has 71 matched companies, and 66 of them are off Namecheap and RestoPro. API7, the company behind APISIX, sells API7 Enterprise on an annual licence priced by CPU core, and API7 Cloud pay-as-you-go, per its pricing page.

Sales signal: a company still on a 2.x release has a team maintaining an older gateway. That's the buyer for paid support, API security and observability, and the 2.x list is small enough to work by hand.

Overlap and movement

We publish no switching rows for APISIX, because none passed our gates. Overlap is small and mostly one builder. 86 domains run an APISIX host and an Envoy host today (103 ever), and 53 of those are Wegic sites on one Tencent Cloud address whose responses carry both headers. Those are two layers of one stack, and nothing migrated. The other rows in the category, Azure Front Door, Amazon ALB and Application Request Routing, barely touch APISIX's base.

Sales signal: there is no migration play on this page. The moment to sell is a site leaving Namecheap, and that shows up as the header disappearing.

The stack around it

Across the 6,290 clean domains, LiteSpeed shows on 62.73%, WordPress on 47.41% and Elementor on 23.48%. cdnjs (6.15%) and jsDelivr (5.34%) are the most common script CDNs, and Cloudflare shows on 3.75%. On Namecheap it is rarer still: 127 of the 4,944 hostnames. Off Namecheap the pattern flips: of the rest, Next.js runs on 158 and Nginx on 71.

Sales signal: few Namecheap sites here have a CDN or edge firewall in front. That's the gap to sell into, and a WordPress plugin is the easiest way in.

Targeting strategy: filter this list for versioned headers to find the self-run gateways, then for company size above 50 to find teams with an API budget.

Competitive angle: for the hostnames still on 2.x, API7 and every other gateway vendor compete for the same upgrade. For everyone else, the competition is the hosting package.
