Companies Using UNIX
Our October 2026 crawl finds 214,952 domains whose web server answers with a Server header such as Apache/2.4.69 (Unix). That "(Unix)" is Apache's generic platform label. Apache's source code prints it on any Unix-like build, and most Linux distributions' packages replace it with their name, so the label marks an Apache that was compiled from source or built by a hosting company for its own servers, most often on Linux. It is not a count of certified UNIX systems such as AIX or HP-UX. Below is the list of companies that use UNIX in that sense, with size, country, industry and stack.
One host writes most of these banners. When we resolved a random 2% sample on 15 October 2026, 3,469 of 4,274 domains (81.17%) sat on STRATO's network, the German shared-hosting company, and 3,467 of them answered with the same bare Apache/2.4.69 (Unix). That header ships with the host's build, so the site owner never picked it. The rest are company, university and government servers, among them Scotiabank's Tokyo branch site, Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, Trellix and Dassault Falcon's customer portal.
UNIX ranks 2nd of the 16 labels in Operating Systems with 23.98%, behind Ubuntu. Every row there reads the same header, so the comparison is banner for banner, and few servers volunteer an operating system at all: the 16 rows add up to 896,502 domains, about 3% of the 29.9 million live domains we crawl.

UNIX Usage Statistics
UNIX reads 199,242 domains in June 2026, 209,252 in July, 209,466 in August, 214,632 in September and 214,952 in October. Don't read that as adoption. The set of domains we crawl turns over every month, with dead sites dropping out and newly found ones added, and our detection signals widen over time, so the line is not a same-domain series. Since we began tracking the label on 16 March 2026, 9,581 domains dropped it on at least one hostname, and 771 of those still send it from another hostname.

Which Countries Use UNIX the Most?
Which countries use UNIX the most? Germany, with 118,114 of the 161,122 companies we matched, then the Netherlands (12,714), the United States (8,151) and Spain (3,199). That is the hosting footprint showing through. In our 4,274-domain sample, .de domains numbered 2,611 and 2,560 of them resolved to STRATO; 283 of the 295 .nl domains did too. Outside Germany and the Netherlands, the label comes from other hosts' builds, STRATO's Spanish arm among them, and from organisations that build their own Apache.
Share of the 161,122 UNIX domains we matched to a company record — 75.0% of the 214,952 we detect. Top 15 countries shown, so these do not sum to 100%. Domains with no matching company record are not represented here and skew small and independent.
UNIX Market Share Among Operating Systems
What is UNIX's market share? 23.98% of Operating Systems, 2nd of 16, based on our live crawl at TechnologyChecker.io. Ubuntu leads with 478,516 domains (53.38%) and Debian is 3rd with 135,941. All of these rows read the same Server header, so the shares compare banners, not installed systems, and only about 3% of the domains we crawl send an operating system at all. UNIX's place in that table rests mostly on one host: 81.17% of a random 4,274-domain sample is STRATO.
Top Competitors by Market Share
UNIX Customers by Company Size & Age
What size companies use UNIX? Very small ones. 83.14% of matched companies with a known size have 1 to 10 employees (90,804 of 109,224), and another 12.66% have 11 to 50. Only 363 have more than 1,000 staff. That is a shared-hosting customer base, people who bought a web package and a domain. The large names on this page usually run the label on one subdomain, such as Ashland's safety data sheet site or Dassault Falcon's customer portal.
Company Size Distribution
Company Age (Founded Decade)
The largest group of matched companies was founded in the 2010s (36.69%), then the 2020s (25.75%) and the 2000s (16.41%). 21.16% predate 2000. Only 30,710 of the 161,122 matched companies list a founding year, so this chart describes the better documented part of the base, which leans younger than its many sole traders and local firms probably are.
What Industries Use UNIX the Most?
Business Consulting and Services leads at 7.54%, then Construction (5.79%), Medical Practices (4.51%), Retail (3.93%) and Real Estate (3.81%), based on our enriched company data. No industry passes 7.54%. That spread is what a hosting company's customer list looks like: consultants, tax advisers, builders, doctors' practices and shops, mostly German, each with a small website.
Consulting and tax firms using UNIX-labelled hosting include Steuerschroeder, a Berlin tax practice on STRATO's build. Restaurants on UNIX banners include Churrascaria Augsburg. Universities using self-built Apache are the other group: Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, the University of Graz and the University of Milan all answered with a "(Unix)" banner in our checks.
UNIX Alternatives & Competitors
UNIX's rivals in this table are other banners. Ubuntu (53.38%) and Debian (15.16%) are counted when their packaged Apache or nginx prints the distribution's name; CentOS (3.61%) and AlmaLinux (1.59%) the same. Few domains carry two of them: 357 run a "(Unix)" host and an Ubuntu host today, 226 Debian, 72 CentOS and 16 AlmaLinux. A domain moves between these rows when its server is rebuilt, which is rare on a hosting fleet.
UNIX Customer Migration
We publish four switching rows, and all are small. 26 domains dropped the "(Unix)" label while gaining an AlmaLinux banner, 7 of them in the last 30 days, and 10 went the other way. 5 moved to Red Hat and 10 came from it. Counts are domains. A "switch" here is a rebuilt server, a self-compiled Apache replaced with a distribution's package or the reverse, not a change of vendor, and 26 is tiny next to 208,314 clean domains.
Tech Stack of UNIX-Powered Websites
Across the 208,314 clean domains, Apache HTTP Server shows on 99.97%, because the label is Apache's. PHP runs on 70.38% and WordPress on 51.12%, Elementor on 14.52% and STRATO's own site builder on 7.31%. Only 13.31% print an OpenSSL version in the banner, the self-built servers outside STRATO. These percentages use the clean live set, not the 214,952 headline.

Expert Analysis: UNIX Growth Trends & Key Signals for Sales Teams in 2026

I run the crawler that stores the response headers of every domain we visit, and UNIX is the row in Operating Systems I'd least want read at face value. A domain counts when its Server header contains "Unix". Our October 2026 crawl puts that at 214,952 domains, 2nd of 16 in the category, with 161,122 matched to a company. On 15 October 2026 I re-requested a random 2% of the clean set, 4,274 domains, resolved every address and grouped the answers by network.
What the label means
If I could rename this row, I'd call it "Apache (Unix)". Apache's source sets one platform string for all Unix-like builds: os/unix/os.h defines it as "Unix". Packagers overwrite it. Red Hat's httpd spec swaps in the release name from /etc/os-release, FreeBSD's port writes "FreeBSD", and Debian's and Ubuntu's packages print their own names, which is what those rows count. So "(Unix)" survives on an Apache someone compiled themselves, or one a host built for its own platform. Apache's ServerTokens documentation shows the default output as Apache/2.4.2 (Unix); set it to Prod and the header shrinks to "Apache".
Sales signal: this header names no operating system vendor. Treat the row as "Apache built outside a distribution" and sell to whoever builds it.
One host writes most of it
3,469 of the 4,274 sampled domains (81.17%) resolved to STRATO's network, AS6724, and 3,467 of them answered with the identical bare Apache/2.4.69 (Unix). Apache released 2.4.69 on 1 October 2026, so that is one build rolled across a shared-hosting fleet within two weeks. No OpenSSL token, no modules. The sample held 2,611 .de domains, and 2,560 of them sat on STRATO, as did 283 of the 295 .nl domains. The next networks are small: Amazon 148 domains, SAKURA Internet 69, Hetzner 32, OVH 28, Contabo 27.
"Four in five UNIX domains are one German host's Apache build. The site owners didn't choose an operating system. They chose a hosting package." - David Thomson, CTO at TechnologyChecker.io
Sales signal: for most of this list the server belongs to STRATO. Sell the site owner what a shared package leaves out, or talk to STRATO.
How much of it is current
4,159 of the 4,274 (97.31%) still sent a "(Unix)" banner on 15 October 2026. 66 didn't answer, and 49 answered with another header, Cloudflare's in 12 cases. An earlier random draw of 50 gave 48. Not every banner fronts a site: our title census counts 5,910 domains with a blank title, 1,651 that answer "404 Not Found" and 519 showing CentOS-WebPanel's test page. They send the banner, so they stay in the count. Since we began tracking the label on 16 March 2026, 9,581 domains dropped it on at least one hostname, and 771 of those still send it from another one. The monthly total went from 199,242 in June to 214,952 in October. Part of that is our side: the set of domains we crawl turns over every month, dead sites out and newly found ones in, and our detection widens.
Sales signal: a banner that is 97% live is a usable targeting field, as long as you remember it mostly means STRATO.
Who and where
Germany has 118,114 of the 161,122 matched companies, the Netherlands 12,714, the United States 8,151 and Spain 3,199. 83.14% of companies with a known size employ 1 to 10 people; 363 have more than 1,000 staff. The industries read like a German high street: business consulting 7.54%, construction 5.79%, medical practices 4.51%, retail 3.93%, real estate 3.81%. Steuerschroeder, a Berlin tax practice, and Churrascaria Augsburg are typical rows.
Sales signal: pitch in German, to owners of firms with 1 to 10 staff, about things a site owner controls: content, bookings, payments, marketing.
The other fifth
The 690 sampled banners outside STRATO look different. They carry OpenSSL and module tokens, and 51 still announce Apache 2.2, a line the Apache project declares end-of-life, with a final release, 2.2.34, in July 2017. The large names on this page come from here: Scotiabank's Tokyo branch site, Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, Trellix's assessments site, Dassault Falcon's customer portal, Ashland's safety data sheets and Mitsui Chemicals' Brazilian site. These are in-house servers with their own Apache builds, nearly always on a subdomain.
Sales signal: a self-built Apache 2.2 is a maintenance problem with an owner. Security, managed hosting and migration services have a buyer in this fifth. The STRATO majority has none of those problems to sell into.
Movement and overlap
We publish four switching rows, all small. 26 domains dropped the label while gaining an AlmaLinux banner, 7 of them in the last 30 days, and 10 went the other way; 5 moved to Red Hat and 10 came from it. A "switch" here is a rebuild: a self-compiled Apache replaced with a distribution's package, or the reverse. Overlap is hostname-level. 357 domains run a "(Unix)" host and an Ubuntu host today, 226 a Debian host and 45 a FreeBSD host.
"When a (Unix) banner turns into AlmaLinux, nobody changed vendor. Someone reinstalled Apache from a package." - David Thomson, CTO at TechnologyChecker.io
Sales signal: a rebuild is when the hosting stack is up for review, and on this page the largest row is 26 domains in seven months.
The stack around it
Across the 208,314 clean domains, Apache shows on 99.97%, PHP on 70.38% and WordPress on 51.12%. Elementor runs on 14.52%, STRATO's own site builder on 7.31% and Joomla on 3.36%. Only 13.31% print an OpenSSL version, the self-built minority again.
Sales signal: half the list is WordPress on shared hosting. Plugins, themes and agency services fit; server software doesn't.
What UNIX costs, and who owns it
UNIX is a registered trademark of The Open Group, per unix.org, and its register of certified products lists systems such as IBM AIX, IBM z/OS and HP-UX 11i v3. Those are paid platforms. The servers on this page run the free Apache HTTP Server. The category's only commercial UNIX row, SunOS, holds 3 domains, and an Apache compiled on AIX would print "(Unix)" like any other, so we can't separate those few here.
Sales signal: if you sell to AIX or HP-UX shops, this list won't find them.
Key takeaways
1. 214,952 domains send Apache's generic "(Unix)" label; 97.31% of a 4,274-domain sample still did on 15 October 2026.
2. STRATO's network hosts 81.17% of the sample.
3. Germany has 118,114 of 161,122 matched companies, and 83.14% of sized companies have 1 to 10 staff.
4. Switching rows are rebuilds; the largest we publish is 26.
5. The enterprise rows are self-built servers on subdomains, some still on Apache 2.2.
How to use this list
Split it by network first. STRATO customers are small German businesses that bought a package; the rest are organisations running their own Apache. Compare banner for banner with Ubuntu and Debian, and see our operating system market share report for how few servers disclose an OS. The full list of 214,952 domains, with 161,122 matched companies, is on TechnologyChecker.io.
Frequently Asked Questions
Who uses UNIX?
On our data, mostly small German businesses on STRATO shared hosting, whose servers send Apache's generic "(Unix)" banner. 81.17% of a random 4,274-domain sample sat on STRATO's network. The large names run their own Apache on a subdomain: Scotiabank's Tokyo branch site, Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, Trellix and Dassault Falcon's customer portal all sent the banner in October 2026.
How many customers does UNIX have?
We count 214,952 domains with a "(Unix)" server banner in October 2026, which are domains, not customers of any UNIX vendor. The label is Apache's default for builds made from source, and STRATO's hosting accounts for about four in five. 161,122 of the domains match a company, and 97.31% of a 4,274-domain sample still sent the banner on 15 October 2026.
What is UNIX's market share?
UNIX holds 23.98% of Operating Systems at TechnologyChecker.io, 2nd of 16 behind Ubuntu's 53.38%. Every row in that table reads the same HTTP Server header, so the share compares banners. Only about 3% of the 29.9 million live domains we crawl send an operating system name at all, and most UNIX banners come from one host, STRATO.
What are the best alternatives to UNIX?
For a server, the practical alternatives are Linux distributions and BSDs. In banner terms, Ubuntu shows on 478,516 domains, Debian on 135,941, CentOS on 32,405 and AlmaLinux on 14,261 in our October 2026 crawl. Certified UNIX such as AIX or HP-UX barely appears in web headers: the category's only commercial UNIX row, SunOS, holds 3 domains.
Which countries use UNIX the most?
Germany, by a wide margin: 118,114 of the 161,122 companies we matched are German, against 12,714 Dutch, 8,151 American and 3,199 Spanish. The reason is hosting. In our 4,274-domain sample, 2,560 of the 2,611 .de domains and 283 of the 295 .nl domains resolved to STRATO's network, which serves the same "(Unix)" Apache build.
What size companies use UNIX?
Very small ones. 83.14% of matched companies with a known size have 1 to 10 employees and 12.66% have 11 to 50, so 95.8% have 50 or fewer. Only 363 of the 109,224 sized companies have more than 1,000 staff, and those usually run a self-built Apache on one subdomain rather than on their main site.
How old are companies that use UNIX?
Younger than the label suggests. Of the 30,710 matched companies with a founding year, 36.69% started in the 2010s, 25.75% in the 2020s and 16.41% in the 2000s, while 21.16% predate 2000. That fits a shared-hosting base of recently founded small firms far better than an old enterprise UNIX estate running AIX or HP-UX.
What is the ideal customer profile for UNIX?
On our data, a German firm with 1 to 10 staff, founded in the 2010s, in consulting, construction or a medical practice, running WordPress (51.12% of domains) on a STRATO package that answers with Apache's "(Unix)" banner. A second, much smaller profile is universities and companies that compile their own Apache for portals and subdomains.
Does anybody still use Unix?
Yes, but our crawl can't show you much of it. Certified UNIX systems such as IBM AIX and z/OS are still listed on The Open Group's register, yet the only commercial UNIX with its own row in our category, SunOS, has 3 domains. The 214,952 "(Unix)" banners are Apache's build label, mostly on Linux.
Is Unix the same as Linux?
No. Linux is a Unix-like system, not certified UNIX. Web headers blur the two: Apache prints "(Unix)" on any Unix-like build compiled from source, Linux included, while distribution packages print their own names, such as Ubuntu or Red Hat Enterprise Linux. So a UNIX banner tells you how Apache was built, not which system runs it.
Does AT&T still own UNIX?
No. UNIX is a registered trademark of The Open Group, as unix.org states, and only systems certified against the Single UNIX Specification may use the name. The Open Group's register lists products such as IBM AIX, IBM z/OS and HP-UX 11i v3. None of that is what an Apache "(Unix)" banner certifies.
Is Unix free or paid?
Certified UNIX comes with commercial systems such as IBM's AIX and z/OS; HP-UX is still certified, but HPE ended its standard support at the end of 2025. The servers on this page are different: their banner comes from the Apache HTTP Server, which is free, usually on a free Linux. On STRATO, the cost is the hosting package, and the "(Unix)" label comes with it.
How do you check a server's header?
Request the page and read the Server line, for example with curl -sI followed by the address. That's how we checked: on 15 October 2026, 48 of a random 50 UNIX domains and 4,159 of a 4,274-domain sample still answered with a "(Unix)" banner. Apache's ServerTokens Prod setting hides the label and sends just "Apache".
Why does STRATO hosting show up as UNIX?
Because STRATO's servers answer with Apache's default platform label. On 15 October 2026, 3,467 of the 3,469 sampled domains on STRATO's network sent exactly "Apache/2.4.69 (Unix)", the Apache release of 1 October 2026, with no other tokens. That build comes with the hosting package, so the customer never chose it.
