A favicon of Red Hat

Companies Using Red Hat

Our October 2026 crawl finds 5,720 domains whose web server names Red Hat in its response header, almost always as Apache/2.4.x (Red Hat Enterprise Linux). Red Hat's own httpd package writes that string: it replaces Apache's generic "Unix" label with the release name, so the banner marks a RHEL server running Red Hat's packaged Apache whose administrator left the OS token on. Rebuilds such as CentOS, AlmaLinux and Rocky Linux print their own names; CentOS and AlmaLinux are counted on their own pages. Below is the list of companies that use Red Hat, including the FAA, the EPA, Boston Children's Hospital, Hallmark and Garanti BBVA.

Two customers explain a fifth of the count. 828 domains (14.30%) are author websites built on the Authors Guild's Sitebuilder, all served from one Rackspace address, and 363 hostnames (6.27%) belong to the University of Arkansas. Universities in general hold 1,056 .edu hostnames, 18.24% of the 5,791 clean domains. When we requested every one of them on 15 October 2026, 5,149 (88.91%) still sent a Red Hat banner.

Red Hat ranks 7th of 16 in Operating Systems with 0.64%. That table compares banners: Ubuntu's 478,516 domains are servers that print "Ubuntu", and only about 3% of the 29.9 million live domains we crawl name an operating system at all.

Red Hat Usage Statistics

Red Hat reads 4,118 domains in June 2026, 5,381 in July, 5,300 in August, 5,768 in September and 5,720 in October. The June to July step is mostly our side. The set of domains we crawl turns over every month, with dead sites dropping out and newly found ones added, and our detection signals widen over time, so this isn't a same-domain series. Since we began tracking Red Hat on 16 March 2026, 991 domains dropped the banner on at least one hostname; 98 of them still send it from another hostname.

List of Companies Using Red Hat

Who uses Red Hat? This list of companies that use Red Hat names 50 of the 2,118 matched companies, ranked by LinkedIn following. We requested each detection URL on 15 October 2026 and 46 still sent a Red Hat banner. Many run it on one site rather than the whole estate: Hallmark on its corporate information site, the University of South Carolina on its library, Ethio Telecom on its hosting portal. Each Red Hat customer here chose RHEL for that server, not necessarily for the whole company.

Red Hat Market Share Among Operating Systems

What is Red Hat's market share? 0.64% of Operating Systems, 7th of 16, based on our live crawl at TechnologyChecker.io. That share counts servers that print a Red Hat banner, so it is small for a reason: many RHEL administrators strip the OS token, and Red Hat's best-known rebuilds print their own names. Read it against the same ruler: Ubuntu 478,516 domains, CentOS 32,405, AlmaLinux 14,261, Red Hat 5,720. About 3% of the domains we crawl send any operating system at all.

Red Hat Customer Migration

We publish four switching rows, all small, measured in October 2026. 21 domains dropped an AlmaLinux banner while gaining Red Hat, only 1 of them in the last 90 days, and 7 went the other way. 10 moved to UNIX, a self-compiled Apache, and 5 came from it. Counts are domains, and a "switch" is a reinstalled server. Our live check found 26 domains that now answer as Rocky Linux, another rebuild.

Expert Analysis: Red Hat Growth Trends & Key Signals for Sales Teams in 2026

David Thomson
David ThomsonCTO, TechnologyChecker

I run the crawler that reads the response headers of every domain we visit. A domain counts on this page when its Server or X-Powered-By header contains "Red Hat". Our October 2026 crawl puts that at 5,720 domains, 7th of 16 in Operating Systems, with 2,118 matched to a company. On 15 October 2026 I requested all 5,791 domains in our clean set, recorded every header and resolved every address.

What the banner says

Red Hat's httpd package writes it. The CentOS Stream httpd spec, the source RHEL 9 is built from, replaces Apache's generic "Unix" platform string with the NAME field of /etc/os-release. On RHEL that reads "Red Hat Enterprise Linux"; older Apache 2.2 packages, and some of Red Hat's separately packaged Apache builds, print "(Red Hat)". So the banner means Red Hat's own packaged Apache, on a server whose administrator kept the default token. 19 matches came another way: Payara and GlassFish servers whose X-Powered-By header names a Java build from "Red Hat, Inc.". That is 0.37% of live banners, and it names a Java build, not the operating system.

Sales signal: a RHEL banner marks a server on a subscription distribution whose owner doesn't hide it. That owner already buys infrastructure from a vendor.

How much of it is current

5,149 of the 5,791 (88.91%) still answered with a Red Hat banner. 286 didn't answer and 356 answered with something else: 66 a bare "Apache", 58 Akamai's edge, and 26 now announce Rocky Linux, another rebuild. An earlier random draw of 50 gave 43. Since tracking began on 16 March 2026, 991 domains dropped the banner on at least one hostname, and 98 of those still send it elsewhere. The month counts rose from 4,118 in June to 5,720 in October, partly because the set of domains we crawl turns over every month, dead sites out and new ones in, and partly because our detection widens.

Sales signal: the list is mostly live. The 26 Rocky Linux moves are the ones to watch: a server rebuilt on a free rebuild has decided against the subscription.

Two customers make a fifth

828 domains, 14.30% of the clean set, resolve to one Rackspace address and answer with the same Apache/2.4.62 (Red Hat Enterprise Linux) OpenSSL/3.5.1 Phusion_Passenger/6.1.1. They are author websites built on the Authors Guild's Sitebuilder, which the Guild offers members for a $12 monthly hosting charge. Those authors bought a website and got RHEL with it, which I didn't expect to find at this scale. The second cluster is the University of Arkansas: 363 hostnames, 6.27%, 362 of them on Apache 2.4.37. UC San Diego adds 145, the University of Florida 144 and the University of North Dakota 56; in all, 1,056 hostnames end in .edu, 18.24% of the set.

"One Rackspace address running the Authors Guild's site builder answers for a seventh of every Red Hat banner we can see." - David Thomson, CTO at TechnologyChecker.io

Sales signal: count owners, not domains. Strip the Authors Guild and the university subdomain fleets and the list is a few thousand separate servers, many of them in IT departments with procurement rules.

Which RHEL

The Apache version in the banner dates the release. 1,961 live banners announce 2.4.62, the version in the RHEL 9 source package, and 193 announce 2.4.63, the RHEL 10 version. 1,666 announce 2.4.37, the RHEL 8 module stream, and 541 announce 2.4.6, the RHEL 7 package. 341 still announce Apache 2.2.15 or 2.2.3. Red Hat's life-cycle data lists RHEL 8, 9 and 10, with RHEL 8 in maintenance until 31 May 2029; its life-cycle page says RHEL 6 and 7 customers on legacy extended support continue through their committed end dates.

Sales signal: the 541 RHEL 7 and 341 Apache 2.2 servers are upgrade projects, or extended-support contracts, waiting to happen. Migration and hardening services have a named list here.

Who and where

The United States has 796 of the 2,118 matched companies, Spain 167, Italy 95, Germany 91. Higher education is 10% of matched companies and government administration 6.74%. The base is old and large for this category: 23.67% of companies with a founding year date from before 1960, and 14.18% of sized companies have more than 1,000 staff. Named users include the FAA, the EPA, Boston Children's Hospital, Hallmark, Garanti BBVA, BPER Banca and the European Space Agency.

Sales signal: sell through the IT department and the procurement calendar. These buyers renew subscriptions; they rarely switch on impulse.

Movement and overlap

We publish four switching rows, measured in October 2026. 21 domains dropped an AlmaLinux banner while gaining Red Hat, but only 1 of those in the last 90 days, and 7 went the other way. 10 moved to a self-compiled Apache that prints "(Unix)" and 5 came from one. A switch here is a reinstalled server, and the numbers are small. Overlap is hostname-level: 80 domains run a Red Hat host and an Ubuntu host today, 35 Debian and 32 CentOS.

"In seven months, the largest switching row on this page is 21 domains. Once a server says Red Hat, it mostly keeps saying it." - David Thomson, CTO at TechnologyChecker.io

Sales signal: the realistic alternative at a RHEL renewal is a compatible rebuild such as AlmaLinux or Rocky Linux, and 26 of these servers already answer as Rocky.

The stack around it

Across the 5,791 domains, Apache shows on 99.76%, OpenSSL on 79.54%, PHP on 52.46% and WordPress on 24.62%. Drupal (8.32%) and Omni CMS (7.96%) come next. Perl (2.97%), mod_perl (2.95%) and mod_wsgi (2.00%) are each on 3% or less.

Sales signal: agencies and content vendors that work with universities should filter this list by Drupal and Omni CMS first.

What it costs

Red Hat's store listed Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server at US$383.90 a year with self-support, US$878.90 Standard and US$1,428.90 Premium when I checked on 15 October 2026. Its developer page offers a no-cost subscription for individuals that is not approved for use in organisations. IBM closed its purchase of Red Hat on 9 July 2019, per Red Hat's press release.

Key takeaways

1. 5,720 domains announce Red Hat; 88.91% of the clean set still did on 15 October 2026.

How to use this list

Remove the Authors Guild domains and group university hostnames by institution, then sort by the Apache version in the banner. Our operating system market share report explains why so few servers disclose an OS. The full list of 5,720 domains, with 2,118 matched companies, is on TechnologyChecker.io.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who uses Red Hat?

Universities, government agencies and hospitals, plus one big hosting customer. Higher education is 10% of matched companies and government administration 6.74%. The FAA, the EPA, Boston Children's Hospital, Hallmark and Garanti BBVA all sent a Red Hat banner on 15 October 2026, and 828 author websites on the Authors Guild's Sitebuilder share one RHEL address at Rackspace.

How many customers does Red Hat have?

We count 5,720 domains whose web server announces Red Hat in October 2026, and 2,118 of them match a company. Those are servers that print the banner, not Red Hat's subscriber count. 828 of the domains are author sites on one Authors Guild server and 363 are University of Arkansas hostnames, and 88.91% still sent the banner on 15 October.

What is Red Hat's market share?

Red Hat holds 0.64% of Operating Systems at TechnologyChecker.io, 7th of 16. The table counts web servers that print an operating system in their header, so it understates RHEL: many administrators remove the token, and rebuilds print their own names. On the same ruler, Ubuntu has 478,516 domains and CentOS 32,405.

What are the best alternatives to Red Hat?

The closest are RHEL rebuilds. AlmaLinux shows on 14,261 domains and CentOS on 32,405 in our October 2026 crawl, and 26 Red Hat domains answered as Rocky Linux when we checked on 15 October. Ubuntu, with 478,516 domains, and Debian, with 135,941, are the other common server choices in our crawl.

Which countries use Red Hat the most?

The United States, with 796 of the 2,118 companies we matched, then Spain with 167, Italy with 95, Germany with 91 and Canada with 75. American universities and federal agencies supply many of the named rows, and they run many hostnames each: the University of Arkansas has 363 on the list, UC San Diego 145 and the University of Florida 144.

What size companies use Red Hat?

Larger than most of this category. 14.18% of matched companies with a known size have more than 1,000 staff and 3.47% more than 10,000, against 0.33% above 1,000 on our UNIX profile. The biggest single band is still 1 to 10 employees, at 38.37%, so the list is not only for enterprise sellers.

How old are companies that use Red Hat?

Old. Founded before 1960 is the largest group, at 23.67% of the 1,094 matched companies with a founding year, and 58.87% predate 2000. Only 4.75% were founded in the 2020s. Universities, hospitals and government bodies explain it, and they are also the organisations that buy long support terms for their servers.

What is the ideal customer profile for Red Hat?

On our data, a US university, hospital or public agency founded long ago, running Red Hat's packaged Apache on RHEL 8 or 9 for a department site, often with Drupal or WordPress. A second profile is hosting services that standardise on RHEL, like the Authors Guild's Sitebuilder, whose 828 author sites share one Rackspace address.

Is Red Hat still owned by IBM?

Yes. IBM closed its acquisition of Red Hat on 9 July 2019, paying about $34 billion, according to Red Hat's press release. Red Hat still sells Red Hat Enterprise Linux under its own brand, and the RHEL banners we count, such as Apache/2.4.62 (Red Hat Enterprise Linux), come from Red Hat's own packages.

Do people still use Red Hat?

Yes. When we requested all 5,791 domains in our clean set on 15 October 2026, 5,149 (88.91%) still answered with a Red Hat banner. 1,961 announced Apache 2.4.62, the version in the RHEL 9 source package, and 193 announced 2.4.63, the RHEL 10 version.

How much does Red Hat Enterprise Linux cost?

Red Hat's store listed Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server at US$383.90 a year for a self-support subscription, US$878.90 for Standard and US$1,428.90 for Premium when we checked on 15 October 2026. Self-support excludes Red Hat's customer support and is not intended for production. Add-ons such as High Availability cost extra.

Is RHEL free for personal use?

Yes, within limits. Red Hat's developer page describes a Red Hat Developer Subscription for Individuals as a self-supported, no-cost offering for personal use that is not approved for use in organisations. It covers up to 16 systems, small production use included. Companies that are already Red Hat customers can use a separate no-cost subscription for development; an organisation's production servers need a paid subscription.

Is AlmaLinux the same as RHEL?

No, though it is built to be compatible. On the web the difference is visible: AlmaLinux's Apache prints "AlmaLinux" in its banner, Red Hat's prints "Red Hat Enterprise Linux". Our October 2026 count shows few servers changing between them: 21 domains dropped AlmaLinux while gaining Red Hat since March 2026, and 7 went the other way.

Is RHEL end of life?

Not the current releases. Red Hat's life-cycle data gives RHEL 8 maintenance support until 31 May 2029, RHEL 9 until 31 May 2032 and RHEL 10 until 31 May 2035. Older ones are another story: 541 domains in our check announced Apache 2.4.6, the RHEL 7 package, and 341 still announced Apache 2.2.
