Companies Using FreeBSD
Our October 2026 crawl finds 5,147 domains whose web server names FreeBSD in its response header, nearly always as Apache/2.4.x (FreeBSD). FreeBSD's ports tree writes that string: its Apache port replaces Apache's generic "Unix" label with "FreeBSD", so the banner marks a FreeBSD machine running the packaged web server with the OS token left on. A few nginx, Zope and BBS servers print it too. Below is the list of companies that use FreeBSD, with Bernama, Vox Telecom, Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv and the National Technical University of Athens among them.
Most of these sites didn't choose FreeBSD; their host did. 1,492 of the 5,164 clean domains (28.89%) resolve to hostNET, a Bremen hosting company, and 940 of them answer with the identical Apache/2.4.57 (FreeBSD) OpenSSL/1.0.2u mod_fcgid/2.3.9. Another 142 are estate agents' websites served by RealtyProIDX from one AWS address. When we requested every clean domain on 15 October 2026, 4,917 (95.22%) still sent a FreeBSD banner.
FreeBSD ranks 8th of 16 in Operating Systems with 0.57%. That table compares banners, and only about 3% of the 29.9 million live domains we crawl name an operating system at all.

FreeBSD Usage Statistics
FreeBSD reads 4,355 domains in June 2026, 5,034 in July, 5,064 in August, 5,131 in September and 5,147 in October. The June to July step is mostly our side: the set of domains we crawl turns over every month, with dead sites dropping out and newly found ones added, and our detection signals widen over time. Since July the line has been nearly flat. Since we began tracking FreeBSD on 16 March 2026, 451 domains dropped the banner on at least one hostname; 51 still send it from another.

Which Countries Use FreeBSD the Most?
Which countries use FreeBSD the most? Germany, with 1,299 of the 2,996 companies we matched, then the United States (480), Spain (105), Austria (86) and the Netherlands (79). Germany is hosting again: 1,410 of the clean domains end in .de and 1,259 of those sit on hostNET's network. Outside Germany, the list is far more scattered.
Share of the 2,996 FreeBSD domains we matched to a company record — 58.2% of the 5,147 we detect. Top 15 countries shown, so these do not sum to 100%. Domains with no matching company record are not represented here and skew small and independent.
FreeBSD Market Share Among Operating Systems
What is FreeBSD's market share? 0.57% of Operating Systems, 8th of 16, based on our live crawl at TechnologyChecker.io. Every row reads the same header, so this compares servers that announce their system: Ubuntu 478,516 domains, Debian 135,941, FreeBSD 5,147. FreeBSD's best-known users, the ones the FreeBSD Foundation lists, mostly don't show up in web banners, so read 0.57% as the share of FreeBSD that faces the web and says so.
Top Competitors by Market Share
FreeBSD Customers by Company Size & Age
What size companies use FreeBSD? Small ones. 69.26% of matched companies with a known size have 1 to 10 employees and 20.09% have 11 to 50, so 89.35% have 50 or fewer. Only 29 of the 2,225 sized companies have more than 1,000 staff. These are hosting customers far more than in-house FreeBSD teams.
Company Size Distribution
Company Age (Founded Decade)
The base is older than its size suggests. The 2010s (24.79%), 2000s (23.74%) and 1990s (21.15%) are almost level, and 45.24% of the 851 matched companies with a founding year predate 2000. Only 6.23% were founded in the 2020s. Long-lived small firms with a long-lived host fit that shape.
What Industries Use FreeBSD the Most?
Construction leads at 4.83%, then Business Consulting and Services (4.21%), Real Estate (4.07%), Retail (4.02%), IT Services (3.97%) and Hospitality (3.92%), based on our enriched company data. Nothing passes 5%. That is a hosting company's customer list, small firms in ordinary trades.
Small German firms using FreeBSD hosting include the nursery Gärtnerei Schoebel and Haus Lindenhof, both on hostNET. Real estate agents on FreeBSD include Century 21 Mike Bowman and EVES Real Estate in New Zealand. Universities using FreeBSD are the in-house exception: NTUA in Athens, TU Freiberg and Kyiv's Taras Shevchenko University all sent a FreeBSD banner on 15 October 2026.
FreeBSD Alternatives & Competitors
FreeBSD's rivals in this table are other banners. Ubuntu (53.38%), UNIX (23.98%), Debian (15.16%) and CentOS (3.61%) all count servers that print a system name. Few domains carry two: 75 run a FreeBSD host and an Ubuntu host today, 45 a "(Unix)" host, 20 Debian and 3 CentOS. We publish no switching table for FreeBSD, because none of those pairs passed our tests.
FreeBSD Customer Migration
Tech Stack of FreeBSD-Powered Websites
Across the 5,164 clean domains, Apache shows on 98.33% and OpenSSL on 94.35%, because FreeBSD's Apache banner lists it. PHP runs on 58.75%, WordPress on 36.85%, Elementor on 6.25% and Contao on 3.52%. mod_dav shows on 3.87% and Python on 2.67%. These percentages use the clean live set, not the 5,147 headline.

FreeBSD Customer Reviews with Pros and Cons
Across 27 DistroWatch reader reviews, all from January 2024 to October 2026 except one low-rated 2023 review, stability is the most common praise and Wi-Fi and driver support the most common complaint. Most of the friction is desktop friction: two reviewers who fault it as a desktop call it solid as a server, and NAS and router users report years without trouble. Our data sees the server side, where 5,147 domains name FreeBSD in their web server banner.
Generated from real user reviews on DistroWatch
- The most common praise is long-run stability, from multi-year NAS uptime to desktops left running for weeks without trouble.(12 reviews)
- Reviewers like that it is one coherent base system rather than a distribution assembled from separate projects, and that it feels like classic Unix.(7 reviews)
- Built-in ZFS, jails, bhyve and boot environments are a main reason people choose it for NAS, router and server roles.(7 reviews)
- Users report fast performance on modest or aging hardware, including old netbooks and laptops that struggled under other systems.(7 reviews)
- The FreeBSD Handbook and documentation earn steady credit for making installation and setup achievable.(6 reviews)
- Wi-Fi and hardware driver gaps are the top complaint, especially Realtek wireless, newer GPUs and laptop sound or printers.(14 reviews)
- As a daily desktop it lags Linux in polish, with missing defaults like sudo, unreliable suspend and setup that takes time and patience.(9 reviews)
- Desktop users hit gaps in the software catalogue, such as no Chrome or Brave builds, older packages and missing GUI utilities.(4 reviews)
- Some long-time users point to long-standing bugs that persist across releases, like the broken bsdconfig package menu.(3 reviews)
Expert Analysis: FreeBSD Growth Trends & Key Signals for Sales Teams in 2026

I run the crawler that records the response headers of every domain we visit. A domain counts on this page when its Server header contains "FreeBSD", with an optional version after it. Our October 2026 crawl puts that at 5,147 domains, 8th of 16 in Operating Systems, with 2,996 matched to a company. On 15 October 2026 I requested all 5,164 domains in our clean set, recorded every header and resolved every address.
What the banner says
FreeBSD's Apache port patches the server so that the platform string reads "FreeBSD" where a source build would print "Unix". 4,831 of the live banners come from Apache. The rest are nginx builds that print "(FreeBSD)" (53), Koala Web Server reporting "FreeBSD 15.0" (19), a few Zope and Synchronet BBS servers, and three company rows whose Apache says "(Unix)" but whose OpenSSL carries FreeBSD's own build tag. Our match isn't case-sensitive, so it reads that tag. Only 22 domains expose a version number, all "15.0", so I publish no version breakdown.
Sales signal: every match is a FreeBSD machine. What it doesn't tell you is who runs it, the site owner or the host.
The host behind a third of it
1,492 of the 5,164 domains (28.89%) resolve to AS34895, hostNET Medien GmbH, which describes itself on hostnet.de as hosting made in Germany, in Bremen, since 1994. 940 of those answer with exactly Apache/2.4.57 (FreeBSD) OpenSSL/1.0.2u mod_fcgid/2.3.9; the rest show older or newer builds of the same stack. 1,259 of the 1,410 .de domains in the set are hostNET's. The second cluster is RealtyProIDX, which designs and hosts IDX websites for estate agents: 142 domains on one AWS address, the same address as realtyproidx.com itself. Then the networks thin out: Amazon 269 in all, Hetzner 186, OVH 153, DigitalOcean 87.
"Nearly three in ten FreeBSD web servers we can see belong to one Bremen hosting company. Take hostNET away and FreeBSD's visible share of the web falls by more than a quarter." - David Thomson, CTO at TechnologyChecker.io
Sales signal: for hostNET's and RealtyProIDX's customers, the operating system came with the package. Offer them what the package lacks, or approach the host directly.
How much of it is current
4,917 of the 5,164 (95.22%) still answered with a FreeBSD banner. 125 didn't answer, and 122 sent something else, 56 of them a bare "Apache". An earlier random draw of 50 gave 46. Since tracking began on 16 March 2026, 451 domains dropped the banner on at least one hostname, and 51 of those still send it from another. The month counts rose from 4,355 in June to 5,147 in October, partly because the set of domains we crawl turns over every month, dead sites out and new ones in, and partly because our detection widens. Since July the line is nearly flat.
Sales signal: a 95% live rate makes this a reliable list. It isn't growing, so treat it as an installed base.
The age of the stack
The banners carry their OpenSSL version. 1,915 live banners announce OpenSSL 1.0, most of them hostNET's 1.0.2u, and 112 announce 0.9. OpenSSL's project says 1.0.2 has been out of support since 1 January 2020, with paid extended support for premium customers. 1,594 announce an OpenSSL 3 release. The project itself is current: its security page supports stable/15 until 31 December 2029 and stable/14 until 30 November 2028, so the old builds here are the hosts' choice.
Sales signal: a site on an old shared stack can't upgrade it alone. Security scanning, managed WordPress and migration offers fit the 1.0-era hosts' customers; the decision still sits with the host.
Who and where
Germany has 1,299 of the 2,996 matched companies, the United States 480, Spain 105, Austria 86. 69.26% of sized companies have 1 to 10 staff, and only 29 have more than 1,000. Construction (4.83%), business consulting (4.21%), real estate (4.07%) and retail (4.02%) lead, and 45.24% of companies with a founding year predate 2000. The in-house users are universities and a few companies running one service: NTUA's technology transfer office, TU Freiberg's blogs, Vox Telecom's webmail and Bernama's National Day site. Of the 50 companies named in the table below, 44 still sent a FreeBSD banner from their detection URL when I checked, and the six that didn't had moved to nginx, stripped the token, blocked our request or stopped answering.
Sales signal: write German-language offers for owner-run firms with ten years or more behind them.
Overlap, not switching
We publish no switching table for FreeBSD. The few domains that dropped it while gaining another system mostly still run both, so none of those pairs passed our tests. Overlap is hostname-level: 75 domains run a FreeBSD host and an Ubuntu host today, 45 a "(Unix)" host and 20 a Debian host. Those are separate hostnames under one domain, each with its own server.
"FreeBSD's web footprint doesn't migrate. It sits on hosts that chose it years ago and still answer with it." - David Thomson, CTO at TechnologyChecker.io
Sales signal: don't build a campaign on FreeBSD-to-Linux migrations. There aren't enough of them in our data.
The stack around it
Across the 5,164 domains, Apache shows on 98.33%, OpenSSL on 94.35%, PHP on 58.75% and WordPress on 36.85%. Nginx is on 3.45%. Contao is on 3.52% and mod_dav on 3.87%.
Sales signal: WordPress and Contao agencies in Germany are the closest partners for anything sold into this list.
What it costs
Nothing. FreeBSD's copyright page permits redistribution and use in source and binary forms, with or without modification. The FreeBSD Foundation's user list names Netflix, WhatsApp and Sony, none of which shows up in these web banners.
Key takeaways
1. 5,147 domains announce FreeBSD; 95.22% of the clean set still did on 15 October 2026.
2. hostNET hosts 28.89% of the clean set, RealtyProIDX another 142 domains.
3. 1,915 live banners announce OpenSSL 1.0.
4. Germany has 1,299 of 2,996 matched companies; 89.35% of sized companies have 50 or fewer staff.
5. No switching corridor passes our tests.
How to use this list
Split by network first: hostNET customers, RealtyProIDX agents, then self-run servers. Our operating system market share report covers why so few servers disclose an OS. The full list of 5,147 domains, with 2,996 matched companies, is on TechnologyChecker.io.
Frequently Asked Questions
Who uses FreeBSD?
On the web, mostly small hosting customers. 1,492 of the 5,164 clean domains sit on hostNET, a Bremen host, and 142 are estate agents' sites on RealtyProIDX's server. The in-house users include Bernama, Vox Telecom, Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv and the National Technical University of Athens, all of which sent a FreeBSD banner on 15 October 2026.
How many customers does FreeBSD have?
FreeBSD is free, so it has users rather than customers. We count 5,147 domains whose web server announced FreeBSD in October 2026, and 2,996 of them match a company. That is a floor: many FreeBSD servers hide the token or sit behind a proxy. 95.22% of the clean set still sent the banner when we checked on 15 October 2026.
What is FreeBSD's market share?
FreeBSD holds 0.57% of Operating Systems at TechnologyChecker.io, 8th of 16. The table counts web servers that print an operating system in their header, so it compares banners: Ubuntu 478,516 domains, Debian 135,941, FreeBSD 5,147. Only about 3% of the 29.9 million live domains we crawl name an operating system at all.
What are the best alternatives to FreeBSD?
For a web server, Linux distributions are the common alternative: Ubuntu shows on 478,516 domains and Debian on 135,941 in our October 2026 crawl. Other BSDs, OpenBSD and NetBSD, have no row in our category. Few FreeBSD domains mix systems: 75 run a FreeBSD host and an Ubuntu host today, and 20 a Debian host.
Which countries use FreeBSD the most?
Germany, with 1,299 of the 2,996 companies we matched, then the United States with 480, Spain with 105, Austria with 86 and the Netherlands with 79. The German lead is one host: 1,259 of the 1,410 .de domains in the clean set resolve to hostNET, which serves FreeBSD's packaged Apache across its customers' sites.
What size companies use FreeBSD?
Small ones. 69.26% of matched companies with a known size have 1 to 10 employees and 20.09% have 11 to 50, so 89.35% have 50 or fewer. Only 29 of the 2,225 sized companies have more than 1,000 staff, and they run FreeBSD on one service, such as Vox Telecom's webmail or a university office site.
How old are companies that use FreeBSD?
Older than you'd guess from their size. Of the 851 matched companies with a founding year, 24.79% started in the 2010s, 23.74% in the 2000s and 21.15% in the 1990s, so 45.24% predate 2000. Only 6.23% were founded in the 2020s. Established small firms that have stayed with one host fit this shape.
What is the ideal customer profile for FreeBSD?
On our data, a German firm with 1 to 10 staff, founded in the 2000s or 2010s, in construction, consulting, real estate or hospitality, running WordPress (36.85% of domains) on hostNET's FreeBSD hosting. A second profile is universities and telecoms that run FreeBSD themselves for a single service, like NTUA or Vox Telecom.
Does anyone still use FreeBSD?
Yes. When we requested all 5,164 clean domains on 15 October 2026, 4,917 (95.22%) still sent a FreeBSD banner, and the monthly count has held between 5,034 and 5,147 since July. The FreeBSD project supports its 14 and 15 branches, with stable/15 supported until 31 December 2029, per its security page.
Is FreeBSD free?
Yes. FreeBSD is distributed under a BSD licence that permits redistribution and use in source and binary forms, with or without modification, as its copyright page sets out. There is no paid edition. On the sites we count, the cost is the hosting: hostNET's customers pay for a package, and FreeBSD comes with it.
Does Netflix use FreeBSD?
The FreeBSD Foundation names Netflix among FreeBSD's users, along with WhatsApp and Sony's PlayStation. Our crawl can't confirm it from web banners: these companies' websites don't announce FreeBSD in their headers. That gap is typical. The 5,147 domains here are the FreeBSD servers that face the web and say what they run.
Is FreeBSD end of life?
No. FreeBSD's security page lists supported branches with end dates: stable/15 until 31 December 2029 and stable/14 until 30 November 2028, with 15.1 released on 16 June 2026 and 14.5 on 8 September 2026. Older releases are not supported, and the project tells users to upgrade to a listed release.
Why isn't FreeBSD more popular?
We can't settle the reasons, but we can measure the gap on one ruler. FreeBSD's web server banner shows on 5,147 domains, Ubuntu's on 478,516 and Debian's on 135,941. More than a quarter of FreeBSD's web footprint is one German host, hostNET, so a single company's choice moves FreeBSD's visible share more than any trend.
Is Mac based on FreeBSD?
Partly. The FreeBSD Foundation lists Darwin, the open-source core of Apple's operating systems, among the systems based on FreeBSD, and Apple among FreeBSD's users. In our crawl Darwin has its own row in Operating Systems, with 4 domains. A web server that runs Darwin and says so is rare, and none of the 5,147 FreeBSD banners we count names Apple.
