Companies Using Ace
Our October 2026 crawl finds 6,777 domains that load Ace, the open-source code editor for web pages, detected by its JavaScript globals such as ace.Editor. Ace is a code editor, not a WYSIWYG one, even though our catalog files it under WYSIWYG Editors: it highlights code, it doesn't format prose. Below is the list of companies that use Ace, including the University of Michigan, Zscaler, Procore, Renesas Electronics and Jefferies.
A third of those domains never asked for an editor. 1,783 of the 6,774 clean domains (26.32%) are Teachable course sites, whose page scripts bundle Ace 1.4.14, and 376 (5.55%) are portfolio sites on Salon, whose old site builder bundles Ace 1.2.3. Their owners chose a course platform or a portfolio builder, and Ace came with it. The rest are mostly web apps, developer portals, university portals and NHS trust sites built on VerseOne CMS.
Ace ranks 5th of the 14 editors in that category, with 3.36%. The table compares it with rich-text editors such as Froala and CKEditor, so the comparison isn't like for like.

Ace Usage Statistics
Ace reads 4,091 domains in June 2026, 4,880 in July, 6,306 in August, 6,830 in September and 6,777 in October. The July to August step is mostly our side. The set of domains we crawl turns over every month, with dead sites dropping out and newly found ones added, and our detection signals widen over time, so this is not a same-domain series. Since we began tracking Ace on 16 March 2026, 1,140 domains dropped it on at least one hostname; 62 of them still load it on another hostname.

Which Countries Use Ace the Most?
Which countries use Ace the most? The United States, with 1,121 of the 3,205 companies we matched, then the United Kingdom (235), Germany (153), France (111) and India (98). NHS trusts are a visible part of the UK count: many run VerseOne CMS, whose pages load Ace, and 48 of the clean domains are nhs.uk hostnames.
Share of the 3,205 Ace domains we matched to a company record — 47.3% of the 6,777 we detect. Top 15 countries shown, so these do not sum to 100%. Domains with no matching company record are not represented here and skew small and independent.
Ace Market Share Among WYSIWYG Editors
What is Ace's market share? 3.36% of WYSIWYG Editors, 5th of 14, based on our live crawl at TechnologyChecker.io. That table mixes two kinds of tool. Froala Editor (61,054 domains), CKEditor (42,989) and Quill (28,893) edit formatted text; Ace edits code. Read Ace's 6,777 as a count of pages that ship a code editor, and remember that a quarter of them are Teachable schools whose page bundle carries it.
Top Competitors by Market Share
Ace Customers by Company Size & Age
What size companies use Ace? Mostly small ones. 52.38% of matched companies with a known size have 1 to 10 employees and 28.29% have 11 to 50. 517 of those 1,620 smallest companies are Teachable schools. The 133 companies with more than 1,000 staff are a different group: universities, banks and software firms that put Ace into a portal, console or developer site.
Company Size Distribution
Company Age (Founded Decade)
The largest group of matched companies was founded in the 2010s (46.03%), then the 2020s (19.62%) and the 2000s (13.02%). That young profile fits course creators and software start-ups. 6.83% were founded before 1960, among them the University of Michigan (1817) and the University of Pittsburgh (1787).
What Industries Use Ace the Most?
Software Development leads at 12.95%, then IT Services and IT Consulting (7.79%) and Technology, Information and Internet (6.19%), based on our enriched company data. Those three, at 26.93% together, are the companies building Ace into their own products. E-Learning Providers (4%) and Professional Training and Coaching (2.83%) are largely Teachable schools: 85 of the 120 e-learning companies and 64 of the 85 coaching companies.
Software companies using Ace include Zscaler in its Private Access admin console and Procore on its developer site. Universities on Ace include the University of Michigan, the University of Pittsburgh and Villanova, whose student portals load one identical script bundle. Hospitals using Ace are NHS trusts such as Barts Health, on VerseOne CMS.
Ace Alternatives & Competitors
The rivals in this table are rich-text editors, so the comparison is loose. Froala Editor (30.29%), CKEditor (21.33%) and Quill (14.33%) format prose; Trix (2.94%) is Basecamp's. Sites mix them freely: 885 domains run Ace and TinyMCE today, 190 CKEditor, 179 Quill, 32 Froala and 22 Trix. No pair passes our switching tests, because most domains that ever ran both still do.

Expert Analysis: Ace Growth Trends & Key Signals for Sales Teams in 2026

I run the crawler that executes each page's scripts and records which JavaScript globals appear. A domain counts on this page when ace.Editor, ace.EditSession or ace.version exists after load. Our October 2026 crawl puts that at 6,777 domains, 5th of 14 in WYSIWYG Editors, with 3,205 matched to a company. On 16 October 2026 I fetched a random 50 of the 6,774 clean domains, then another 100 from outside the two big platforms, and traced which script file defines Ace on each page.
A code editor in the wrong drawer
Ace's site describes it as an embeddable code editor written in JavaScript, maintained as the primary editor for Cloud9 IDE and released under the BSD license. It highlights code; it doesn't format prose. Our catalog still files it under WYSIWYG Editors, beside Froala, CKEditor and Quill, so its 3.36% share compares it with tools that do another job. I'd rather it sat with CodeMirror and Monaco.
Sales signal: a site that loads Ace on purpose is building software. That is a developer-tools prospect, not a content-team one.
Who puts it on the page
In the random 50, Ace came from Teachable's own scripts on 19 domains, packs served from fedora.teachablecdn.com, and from Salon's site-builder bundle on 4. Sized across the clean set, Teachable accounts for 1,783 domains (26.32%) and Salon for 376 (5.55%). Salon's homepage calls it a way of presenting artwork online, and says the old site stays online until March 2027 now that the platform has been rebuilt. Both are platforms the site owner picked; Ace came along. I count them as bundled, not cut, and keep them in view.
"A quarter of the Ace footprint is course creators on Teachable who never chose a code editor. The platform ships it in every page bundle." - David Thomson, CTO at TechnologyChecker.io
Sales signal: filter out Teachable and Salon before you prospect. What remains, about 4,600 domains, is organisations that chose a code editor.
The rest of the list
In the 100 pages I traced from outside those two platforms, the largest group, about 35, loaded Ace from their own application bundle: dashboards, admin consoles, supplier portals, low-code builders. 14 pulled it from cdnjs, several through a WordPress plugin, and 31 showed no Ace in a static fetch, usually because the app loads it after sign-in or on demand. A few products bundle it for their customers. NHS trusts on VerseOne CMS load plugins/ace/ace.min.js on public pages, and 48 clean domains are nhs.uk hostnames. Ten university portals among our company candidates, the University of Michigan, Pitt and Villanova among them, serve the identical student-portal bundle. Organizr, Concrete CMS, Moodle question types and CYBERBIZ's store admin turn up too, each in small numbers.
Sales signal: when one script file appears on many institutions, sell to the vendor behind it, not the institutions.
Old builds
The rule captures a version on 6,406 of 6,774 domains (94.57%). Ace 1.4.14, from January 2022, leads with 1,889, 1,736 of them Teachable's. Ace 1.2.3, from January 2016, has 578, all 376 Salon sites among them. Then come 1.2.9 (488), 1.4.12 (362) and 1.44.0, the newest release at crawl time (11 May 2026; 1.45.0 followed on 16 October), with 328. In all, 4,387 domains run a build older than 1.5, released in May 2022. Outside Teachable and Salon, 797 of the 4,291 versioned domains run 1.43 or later. Release dates are from the Ace changelog.
Sales signal: a self-built app pinned to a 2017 Ace is an app nobody has touched in years. Front-end modernisation and security review have an opening there.
Who and where
The United States has 1,121 of the 3,205 matched companies, the United Kingdom 235, Germany 153. 52.38% of sized companies have 1 to 10 staff, and 46.03% of those with a founding year started in the 2010s. Software development is 12.95% of matched companies, IT services 7.79% and technology and internet 6.19%. The named rows are application pages: Zscaler's Private Access admin console, Procore's developer site, Renesas's support site and Jefferies' research content site. Of the 50 companies in the table, 36 loaded Ace when I fetched their detection URL.
Sales signal: the developer-portal and admin-console rows are the buyers for API documentation, query tooling and embedded-editor alternatives.
Overlap, not switching
We publish no switching table. 885 domains run Ace and TinyMCE today, 190 Ace and CKEditor, 179 Ace and Quill. They do different jobs on the same page, and most domains ever seen with both still run both, so no pair passed our tests. Since tracking began on 16 March 2026, 1,140 domains dropped Ace on at least one hostname; 62 still load it elsewhere. The month counts rose from 4,091 in June to 6,777 in October, partly because the set of domains we crawl turns over every month, dead sites out and new ones in, and partly because our detection widens.
"Nobody replaces a rich-text editor with Ace. They add it next to one, because one edits copy and the other edits code." - David Thomson, CTO at TechnologyChecker.io
Sales signal: don't pitch Ace users a rich-text editor as a switch; pitch it as the other half of the page.
The stack around it
Across the 6,774 domains, jQuery shows on 81.58%, Google Analytics on 70.53%, Lodash on 57.71%. Ruby on Rails (30.59%), Ahoy (23.69%) and Filestack (8.68%) are largely Teachable's stack. WordPress runs on 22.34%, Next.js on 7.47%, Microsoft ASP.NET on 8.05%.
Sales signal: strip the Teachable rows and the stack turns into custom applications on Rails, ASP.NET and Next.js, the audience for developer tooling.
What it costs
Nothing. Ace is released under the BSD license, and the current 1.45.2 is a free download. The cost is maintenance, which the version numbers above say many sites skip.
Key takeaways
1. 6,777 domains load Ace; it is a code editor filed under WYSIWYG Editors.
2. Teachable bundles it on 1,783 domains (26.32%) and Salon on 376 (5.55%).
3. 4,387 domains run a build older than Ace 1.5; 328 ran 1.44.0, the newest release at crawl time.
4. The deliberate users are software firms, universities and NHS trusts, on application pages.
5. Ace sits beside rich-text editors; nothing switches.
How to use this list
Exclude Teachable and Salon domains, then sort by version and by page type: consoles and developer portals first. The full list of 6,777 domains, with 3,205 matched companies, is on TechnologyChecker.io.
Frequently Asked Questions
Who uses Ace?
Three groups, on our data. Teachable course sites are 1,783 of the 6,774 clean domains, because Teachable's page scripts bundle Ace. Salon portfolio sites add 376. The rest build it in on purpose, in admin consoles, developer portals and student portals: Zscaler, Procore, Renesas and the University of Michigan all loaded Ace when we checked on 16 October 2026.
How many customers does Ace have?
Ace is free, so it has users, not customers. We count 6,777 domains loading it in October 2026, and 3,205 of them match a company. Treat that as sites, not buyers: 1,783 are Teachable course sites and 376 Salon portfolios that got Ace with their platform. When we fetched a random 50, 42 still loaded it.
What is Ace's market share?
Ace holds 3.36% of WYSIWYG Editors at TechnologyChecker.io, 5th of 14. That category mixes rich-text editors with code editors, so the share compares unlike tools: Froala Editor has 61,054 domains and CKEditor 42,989, while Ace's 6,777 are pages that ship a code editor, a quarter of them through Teachable. Rank among code editors would be the fairer test.
What are the best alternatives to Ace?
For code editing, the usual alternatives are CodeMirror and Monaco, and neither has a row in this category. For formatted text, which Ace doesn't do, the category's leaders are Froala Editor, CKEditor and Quill. 885 domains already run Ace beside TinyMCE today, one for code and one for prose, which tells you they aren't substitutes.
Which countries use Ace the most?
The United States, with 1,121 of the 3,205 companies we matched, then the United Kingdom with 235, Germany with 153, France with 111 and India with 98. NHS trusts are a visible part of the UK figure: many run VerseOne CMS, which loads Ace on public pages, and 48 of the clean domains are nhs.uk hostnames.
What size companies use Ace?
Mostly small. 52.38% of matched companies with a known size have 1 to 10 employees, and 517 of those 1,620 are Teachable schools. Another 28.29% have 11 to 50. 133 companies have more than 1,000 staff. They are universities, banks and software firms that put Ace into a portal, console or developer site rather than their homepage.
How old are companies that use Ace?
Young. 46.03% of matched companies with a founding year started in the 2010s and 19.62% in the 2020s, so about two in three were founded in 2010 or later. 6.83% predate 1960, among them the University of Michigan and the University of Pittsburgh. The young majority fits course creators and software companies, the two biggest groups on this page.
What is the ideal customer profile for Ace?
On our data there are two. One is a software or IT company, most often American, that embeds Ace in its own product, console or docs. The other is a solo course creator on Teachable who never chose Ace at all. Anyone selling developer tooling wants the first group and should filter out Teachable.
What is ACE software used for?
Ace is an embeddable code editor written in JavaScript, according to its site, which still calls it the primary editor for the Cloud9 IDE; AWS closed Cloud9 to new customers in July 2024. Sites use it to let people edit code, queries or configuration in the browser. On our data, that means admin consoles, API portals, query builders and student coding exercises, plus pages that only carry it inside a platform's script bundle.
Is Ace editor free?
Yes. Ace's site says its source code is released under the BSD license, which allows use in open-source and commercial projects. The latest release is 1.45.2, published on npm on 21 October 2026. Most sites we see run older builds: 4,387 of the 6,774 clean domains report a version older than 1.5, released in 2022.
Is Ace a WYSIWYG editor?
No. Ace edits code with syntax highlighting; it doesn't produce formatted text the way TinyMCE, CKEditor or Froala do. Our catalog files it under WYSIWYG Editors, which is why it ranks 5th there with 3.36%. If you need a rich-text editor, the category's leaders are the right comparison; if you need a code editor, Ace is.
Why do Teachable sites load Ace?
Teachable's own page scripts include it. When we fetched a random 50 Ace domains, 19 loaded Ace from Teachable's packs on fedora.teachablecdn.com, and 1,736 of the 1,783 Teachable domains report the same Ace 1.4.14. The school owner chose Teachable; the code editor came in its bundle, whether or not a course uses it.
Which version of Ace do websites use?
Mostly old ones. 6,406 of the 6,774 clean domains report a version. Ace 1.4.14, from January 2022, leads with 1,889, nearly all Teachable. Ace 1.2.3 from 2016 has 578, mostly Salon sites, and 1.2.9 has 488. Only 328 ran 1.44.0, the newest release when we crawled (1.45.0 followed on 16 October 2026), and 4,387 run something older than Ace 1.5.
Do sites run Ace alongside TinyMCE or CKEditor?
Often. 885 domains run Ace and TinyMCE today, 190 run Ace and CKEditor and 179 Ace and Quill. They do different jobs, prose formatting and code editing, so they sit side by side rather than replacing each other. No pair passes our switching tests, because most domains that ever ran both still run both.
