Our October 2026 crawl finds 111,830 domains that answer through the Envoy proxy: a Server: envoy banner or an x-envoy-upstream-service-time header, which Envoy adds to report how long the server behind it took. Envoy is the open-source edge and service proxy built at Lyft, now a graduated CNCF project. The header is written by whoever runs that Envoy layer, which is often a platform and not the site's owner. Below is the list of companies that use Envoy in that sense, with size, country, industry and stack.

No single host dominates, but a handful of platforms add up. In a random sample of 2,231 hostnames we re-requested on 16 October 2026, Zendesk's help centres were the largest group, 211 (9.46%), followed by Lightspeed eCom stores (4.57%), Salla stores (3.94%), TradeIndia seller sites (3.72%), Cars Commerce's dealer sites (3.68%), F5 Distributed Cloud customers (3.63%) and Freshworks help desks (3.41%). About half sit outside any platform we could name, including companies running Envoy themselves, often inside an Istio service mesh. Airbnb, Uber, PNC, NVIDIA and Johnson & Johnson all sent the header that day.

Envoy ranks 1st of 12 rows in Load Balancers & Proxies with 32.4%, counted after we removed 5,682 for-sale landers and dead-site placeholders (see How We Counted, below). The rows it leads are mostly managed cloud load balancers, so the share compares who puts which header in front of sites.

Envoy Usage Statistics

The chart has one point, 111,830 domains in October 2026, because the cleaned count starts with this crawl; the for-sale and placeholder removals weren't applied to earlier months, so we don't chart them. Even then, it wouldn't be a same-domain series: the set of domains we crawl turns over every month, with dead sites dropping out and newly found ones added, and our detection signals widen over time. Since tracking began on 16 March 2026, 153,941 domains dropped the header on at least one hostname, and 1,742 still send it from another. Read that as turnover, not as lost customers.

List of Companies Using Envoy

Who uses Envoy? This list of companies that use Envoy names 50 of the 56,909 matched companies, ranked by LinkedIn following. We requested each detection URL on 16 October 2026 and 40 sent an Envoy header; 9 of the other 10 returned a bot check or a 403. Big names usually run Envoy themselves, many inside an Istio mesh, where the banner reads istio-envoy: PNC, NVIDIA, Deere, Edward Jones. Others get it from a platform. Disney's careers help centre is a Zendesk site, and Boeing, Travelers and XPO answer through F5 Distributed Cloud. These websites using Envoy are the exception; the typical one is a platform customer.

Which Countries Use Envoy the Most?

Which countries use Envoy the most? The United States, with 23,810 of the 56,909 companies we matched, then the United Kingdom (2,770), India (2,683), the Netherlands (2,656), Canada (1,999) and Germany (1,932). Two entries are platform footprints. 983 of the Dutch companies co-detect Lightspeed eCom, the store builder whose shops send the header, and 776 of the 883 Saudi companies run Salla stores. Only 438 of India's 2,683 co-detect one of the platforms named on this page, though TradeIndia's seller sites, which we spot by header, aren't in that figure.

Envoy Market Share Among Load Balancers & Proxies

What is Envoy's market share? 32.4% of Load Balancers & Proxies, 1st of 12 rows, based on our live crawl at TechnologyChecker.io and the cleaned count of 111,830. Amazon ALB is 2nd at 22.55%, Google Cloud Load Balancing 3rd at 17.29% and Azure Front Door 4th at 15.36%. The rows aren't like for like: those three are managed cloud services, while Envoy is software that a platform or a company runs. A large part of Envoy's count is hosted platforms putting it in front of their customers' sites.

Envoy Customers by Company Size & Age

What size companies use Envoy? Mostly small, with a real enterprise tail. 46.82% of matched companies with a known size have 1 to 10 employees (25,145) and 26.16% have 11 to 50. Yet 2,374 have more than 1,000 staff (1,539 with 1,001 to 5,000, 333 with 5,001 to 10,000 and 502 above that). The small end is platform customers: shops on Lightspeed and Salla, help desks on Zendesk, dealers and estate agents. The large end usually runs its own Envoy, often on one subdomain.

Company Size Distribution

Company Age (Founded Decade)

Fairly young, with an old quarter. 40.8% of matched companies with a founding year started in the 2010s, 17.53% in the 2020s and 17.08% in the 2000s. 24.58% predate 2000, and 7.75% predate 1960. The young majority matches the platform customers. The older quarter includes the banks, airlines and manufacturers on this page, such as Deere, Edward Jones and Turkish Airlines, which run Envoy on their own systems.

What Industries Use Envoy the Most?

Software Development leads at 8.19%, narrowly ahead of Retail (7.98%), then IT Services and IT Consulting (4.87%) and Technology, Information and Internet (4.83%), based on our enriched company data. Several rows are platforms more than industries. 1,659 of the 4,160 software companies co-detect Zendesk, and 697 of the 4,051 retailers run Lightspeed eCom. No industry passes 8.19%, which is what a header shared by many hosted platforms looks like.

IT Services and IT Consulting2,472 (4.87%)
Technology, Information and Internet2,451 (4.83%)

Car dealers using Envoy mostly arrive through dealer-site platforms: at least 335 of the 1,164 Motor Vehicle Manufacturing companies run Dealer Inspire and 53 run Dealer.com. Real estate firms on Envoy are often Keller Williams agents: 698 of 1,462 co-detect Brightspot, the CMS on every Keller Williams agent site in our sample. Banks using Envoy include 296 of 991 on Banno's bank sites, and large banks such as PNC that run it themselves.

Envoy Alternatives & Competitors

Envoy's rivals in this table are other headers, and most of them are managed cloud load balancers: Amazon ALB (22.55%), Google Cloud Load Balancing (17.29%) and Azure Front Door (15.36%). Apache APISIX (1.79%) is the other open-source proxy, and most of its count is Namecheap's shared hosting. Overlap is common because these are layers that stack: 1,236 domains run an Envoy host and a Front Door host today, 985 Amazon ALB and 478 Google Cloud Load Balancing.

Envoy Customer Migration

We publish one switching pair, with Amazon ELB. 113 domains dropped Amazon ELB while gaining Envoy since tracking began, 34 of them in the last 30 days and 88 in the last 90, and 54 went the other way (20 and 49). Counts are domains. Both are layers in front of a site, so a switch is a change of edge infrastructure, often a move to or from a hosted platform rather than a purchase. And 113 is small next to 111,830.

Tech Stack of Envoy-Powered Websites

Across the 111,826 clean domains, Cloudflare sits in front of 56.31%, so on most of these sites Envoy is the layer behind the CDN. Next.js shows on 19.26%, WordPress on 16.15% and Ruby on Rails on 14.85%; Zendesk, Thinkific and Freshworks domains each make up more than 3,000 of the 16,608 Rails domains. GoDaddy shows on 15.85%, but in our sample those domains resolved to other platforms, Cars Commerce and Keller Williams among them, so it doesn't mark the server. These percentages use the clean live set, not the 111,830 headline.

How We Counted Envoy Customers

A domain counts here when a response from it carries Server: envoy or an x-envoy-upstream-service-time header. Envoy's router documentation describes the second as the time in milliseconds the server behind Envoy spent on the request, plus the network latency between them. Either header is set by whoever runs the Envoy layer.

Our raw October count was 125,012 domains. Our standard title filter removed 7,500 for-sale and gambling pages. We then removed 5,682 more that pass the header test without being Envoy sites. 4,022 are for-sale landers: 3,949 domains that redirect to GoDaddy's forsale.godaddy.com or to Afternic, and 73 that forward to ourdomainstore.com. 1,660 are platform placeholders for dead sites: Lightspeed eCom's "Webshop closed" (385) and "Webshop not found" (16) pages, Onepage's "Website is not found" page (371), bare "Error" pages (642), and 404 pages from Mailchimp (115), Dropbox (67) and Klaviyo (64). The GoDaddy landers slip past a title filter because their titles are the bare domain name, blank, or French "est à vendre", so we found them by following every candidate domain's redirects on 16 October 2026.

That leaves 111,830, which every chart and table on this page uses. Two caveats. The candidate search wasn't complete: 7 of the 87 for-sale landers in a random 2,350-hostname sample aren't on the removal list, so an estimated 350 to 400 remain in the count. And in the same sample, with removed domains set aside, 100 of 2,231 hostnames (4.48%) didn't answer at all. A failed fetch doesn't change a domain's status, so those stay.

Which Platforms Put Envoy in Front of Sites

We re-requested a random 2% of the clean list on 16 October 2026, 2,231 hostnames once removed domains are set aside, and grouped them by address, network and the platform's own response headers. Some platforms sit behind Cloudflare bot checks that returned a 403 to our requests, so the header couldn't be seen that day; their rows say so.

Across the whole clean list the Zendesk figure holds up: 13,420 domains (12.00%) also carry a Zendesk detection. We identified the platforms from their addresses (Cars Commerce's own network, Zendesk's help-centre addresses), their CNAMEs (ssl.popmenu.com, thinkific.com) and their headers (Lightspeed's x-shop-id, F5's volt-adc server banner).

Expert Analysis: Envoy Growth Trends & Key Signals for Sales Teams in 2026

David Thomson
David ThomsonCTO, TechnologyChecker

I run the crawler that stores the response headers of every domain we visit, and Envoy's raw count needed a cut before I could write about it. A domain counts when a response carries Server: envoy or x-envoy-upstream-service-time. Our raw October 2026 crawl had 125,012 such domains. After the usual title filter and a redirect check that removed 5,682 for-sale landers and dead-site placeholders, 111,830 remain, 1st of 12 rows with 32.4%, and 56,909 match a company. On 16 October 2026 I re-requested a random 2% of the list, resolved every address and grouped the answers by network and by the platforms' own headers.

What the header means

Envoy is the open-source proxy originally built at Lyft, released under the Apache 2.0 licence and graduated by the CNCF on 28 November 2018. Its router sets x-envoy-upstream-service-time, the milliseconds the server behind it took, and that header is the one most sites leak: in a random 50, 24 of the 32 live hosts sent only that line, 6 sent both and 2 sent only the banner. The banner itself varies. istio-envoy marks Istio's gateways, volt-adc marks F5 Distributed Cloud, and some banners carry a suffix, such as envoy-iad.

Sales signal: the header tells you a proxy layer exists, not who bought it. Work out whether the site runs Envoy or its platform does before you pitch anything.

The cut that came first

The raw count included 3,949 domains that redirect to GoDaddy's for-sale marketplace or Afternic, 73 that forward to a domain store and 1,660 platform placeholders: Lightspeed's "Webshop closed", Onepage's "Website is not found", bare "Error" pages and Mailchimp, Dropbox and Klaviyo 404s. Their titles were the bare domain name or blank, so only following the redirects caught them. We missed some. 7 of the 87 for-sale landers in the sample aren't on the list, so roughly 350 to 400 remain.

"Before the cut, one domain in twenty on this page was a parked name or a dead shop. The header was real. The site wasn't." - David Thomson, CTO at TechnologyChecker.io

Sales signal: on any header-based list, follow the redirect before you trust the title. A lander can answer with a perfectly good proxy header.

Who puts it there

No host dominates the way Namecheap does on the Apache APISIX page. Zendesk's help centres are the largest group, 211 of 2,231 sampled hostnames (9.46%), mostly help and support subdomains of companies that host their help desk there. Lightspeed eCom stores follow at 4.57%, Salla stores at 3.94%, TradeIndia seller sites at 3.72%, Cars Commerce's dealer sites at 3.68% and F5 Distributed Cloud customers at 3.63%. Freshworks help desks, Popmenu restaurant sites, Thinkific courses, GoDaddy's reseller storefronts, Mailchimp websites, Keller Williams agent sites, Medium and Banno's bank sites each add between 0.9% and 3.41%. Together, the named platforms are about 46% of the sample.

Sales signal: a help centre on Zendesk or a shop on Lightspeed is a customer of that platform. Pitch the site owner on what the platform doesn't do, and sell infrastructure to the platform.

How much of it is current

1,612 of the 2,231 sampled hostnames (72.25%) sent the header on 16 October 2026, and 32 of a random 50. Most of the gap is our side being blocked, not Envoy being gone: 411 hostnames returned a Cloudflare or similar bot check with no headers to read, among them the dealer, Popmenu and Keller Williams sites. 100 (4.48%) didn't answer at all. Since tracking began on 16 March 2026, 153,941 domains dropped the header on at least one hostname, more than the live count, and 1,742 of them still send it from another. The set of domains we crawl turns over every month, dead sites out and newly found ones in, and our detection signals widen, so read churn as turnover.

Sales signal: plain HTTP checks undercount the platform-hosted side. If you verify this list yourself, use a browser for Cloudflare-fronted sites.

Who and where

46.82% of matched companies with a known size have 1 to 10 employees and 26.16% have 11 to 50, but 2,374 have more than 1,000. The United States has 23,810 matched companies, the United Kingdom 2,770, India 2,683 and the Netherlands 2,656, where 983 co-detect Lightspeed eCom. 776 of Saudi Arabia's 883 run Salla. Software Development (8.19%) and Retail (7.98%) lead the industries, and the dealer, estate-agent and bank rows carry Dealer Inspire, Keller Williams and Banno.

Sales signal: segment by platform first, then by size. A five-person shop on Salla and a bank with thousands of staff on Istio share a header and nothing else.

The self-run side

About half the sample sits outside any platform I could name, and that is where the recognisable companies are. Many run Envoy inside an Istio mesh: 334 sampled hostnames sent istio-envoy, and Istio's documentation says it uses an extended version of Envoy. PNC's sign-on site, NVIDIA's build portal, Deere's shop, Edward Jones, Johnson & Johnson and Turkish Airlines' e-ticket site all answered that way. Airbnb, Uber and Apple's card site send the plain header. Boeing, Travelers and XPO answer through F5 Distributed Cloud, whose edge sends Envoy's timing header under a volt-adc banner.

Sales signal: an istio-envoy banner means a Kubernetes platform team. That team buys service-mesh support, observability and API security, and the subdomain tells you which application sits behind it.

Overlap and movement

We publish one switching pair. 113 domains moved from Amazon ELB to Envoy since tracking began, 34 in the last 30 days, and 54 went the other way. That is about 2 to 1 in Envoy's favour, on a tiny base. Overlap is far larger than switching because these layers stack: 1,236 domains run an Envoy host and an Azure Front Door host today, 985 Amazon ALB, 478 Google Cloud Load Balancing and 14 Application Request Routing.

"Envoy rarely replaces a cloud load balancer. It sits behind one, and our overlap counts are mostly that stacking." - David Thomson, CTO at TechnologyChecker.io

Sales signal: a domain with Envoy behind Front Door or ALB has two traffic layers to manage. That's the opening for edge security and cost tools; a proxy swap is the wrong pitch.

The stack around it

Cloudflare sits in front of 56.31% of the 111,826 clean domains, so on most of them Envoy is the layer behind the CDN. Next.js shows on 19.26%, WordPress on 16.15% and Ruby on Rails on 14.85%, the last partly Zendesk, Thinkific and Freshworks domains. Nginx shows on 11.54% and Amazon CloudFront on 13.81%. GoDaddy appears on 15.85%, but its domains resolved to other platforms in our sample.

Sales signal: a site behind Cloudflare and Envoy already has its edge built. Sell what sits above it: the help desk, the store or the application.

Key takeaways

  • 111,830 domains after removing 5,682 for-sale landers and placeholders; 32.4% of Load Balancers & Proxies, 1st of 12.
  • Zendesk help centres are the biggest platform at 9.46% of sampled hostnames.
  • About half the sample sits outside the named platforms; that half holds the companies running Envoy themselves, often under Istio.
  • 72.25% of sampled hostnames showed the header on 16 October 2026; most of the rest were bot checks.
  • Switching is small (113 in, 54 out with Amazon ELB); stacking is common.

Sales applications

Outreach template: "Your [subdomain] answers through an Istio gateway. Teams running Envoy at that scale usually want [your product's outcome]. Here's how [peer] handled it." Use it on the istio-envoy hosts.

Targeting strategy: drop the Zendesk, Lightspeed, Salla and other platform rows, then filter for companies above 1,000 staff. What remains is platform teams with budget.

Competitive angle: for the platform customers, compete with the platform's built-in features; for the self-run side, compete with what the mesh team would build.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who uses Envoy?

On our data, mostly the customers of hosted platforms that run Envoy in front of their sites. In a 2,231-hostname sample on 16 October 2026, Zendesk help centres were 9.46%, Lightspeed eCom stores 4.57% and Salla stores 3.94%. About half sat outside any platform we could name, including companies running Envoy themselves; Airbnb, Uber, PNC, NVIDIA and Johnson & Johnson all sent it that day.

How many customers does Envoy have?

We count 111,830 domains answering through Envoy in October 2026, after removing 5,682 for-sale landers and dead-site placeholders. They are domains, not customers: Envoy is free, open-source software, and many of these sites get it from their platform. 56,909 match a company. In a random 50, 32 still sent the header on 16 October 2026.

What is Envoy's market share?

Envoy holds 32.4% of Load Balancers & Proxies at TechnologyChecker.io, 1st of 12 rows, on the cleaned 111,830 domains. Amazon ALB follows at 22.55%, Google Cloud Load Balancing at 17.29% and Azure Front Door at 15.36%. Those three are managed cloud services and Envoy is software someone runs, so the share compares headers.

What are the best alternatives to Envoy?

In our category the largest other rows include Amazon ALB with 77,852 domains, Google Cloud Load Balancing with 59,688, Azure Front Door with 53,009 and Apache APISIX with 6,183. The first three are cloud services, often used alongside Envoy: 1,236 domains run Envoy and Front Door today. APISIX and Kong are the self-hosted, like-for-like choices.

Which countries use Envoy the most?

The United States, with 23,810 of the 56,909 companies we matched, then the United Kingdom (2,770), India (2,683), the Netherlands (2,656), Canada (1,999) and Germany (1,932). Platforms shape the order: 983 of the Dutch companies co-detect Lightspeed eCom, and 776 of the 883 Saudi companies run Salla stores that send the header.

What size companies use Envoy?

Mostly small firms on hosted platforms, plus a large enterprise tail. 46.82% of matched companies with a known size have 1 to 10 employees and 26.16% have 11 to 50. 2,374 have more than 1,000 staff, and those usually run Envoy themselves, often in an Istio mesh, as PNC, NVIDIA and Deere do on the sites we checked.

How old are companies that use Envoy?

Mostly founded since 2000. Of matched companies with a founding year, 40.8% started in the 2010s, 17.53% in the 2020s and 17.08% in the 2000s, while 24.58% predate 2000. The younger majority is platform customers such as Zendesk and Salla users; the older quarter includes banks, airlines and manufacturers running their own Envoy.

What is the ideal customer profile for Envoy?

On our data, a company with 1 to 10 staff, founded in the 2010s, in software, retail or IT services, in the US, UK, India or the Netherlands, whose help centre or store runs on a hosted platform such as Zendesk, Lightspeed eCom or Salla, behind Cloudflare (56.31% of domains). A second profile is large firms running Istio.

What companies use Envoy?

Envoy was built at Lyft. Sites that sent an Envoy header on 16 October 2026 include Airbnb, Uber, Apple on card.apple.com, PNC, NVIDIA, Johnson & Johnson, Deere and Turkish Airlines. Platforms add many more: Zendesk, Lightspeed eCom, Salla, TradeIndia and Freshworks run it in front of their customers' sites.

Is Envoy proxy free?

Yes. Envoy is open source under the Apache 2.0 licence, per its GitHub repository, and its site describes it as a graduated Cloud Native Computing Foundation project. The CNCF accepted it on 13 September 2017 and graduated it on 28 November 2018. The newest release on GitHub is v1.40.2, from 27 October 2026, a patch to the v1.40.0 release of 13 October, and anyone can run it.

Is Envoy based on NGINX?

No. Envoy's own site says it was originally built at Lyft as a high-performance C++ distributed proxy, a separate code base from NGINX. The two often appear together on our data, though: Nginx shows on 11.54% of Envoy's clean domains, usually as another layer in the same stack, and OpenResty on 3.61%.

Does Kubernetes use Envoy?

Not by itself, but Istio does: Istio's documentation says it uses an extended version of the Envoy proxy for all traffic in the mesh. That shows up in our data. On 16 October 2026, 334 of the 2,231 hostnames we sampled sent the Server value istio-envoy, including PNC, NVIDIA, Deere, Edward Jones and Johnson & Johnson.

What does x-envoy-upstream-service-time mean?

It is the time in milliseconds the server behind Envoy took to handle the request, plus the network latency between Envoy and that server, according to Envoy's router documentation, which lists it among the headers Envoy sets on responses. It is the commoner of our two signals: 24 of the 32 live hosts in a random 50 sent only that header, without a Server: envoy banner.

Why do Zendesk help centres send an Envoy header?

Because the servers Zendesk uses to host help centres send it, and it reaches the customer's own domain unchanged. In our 16 October 2026 sample, 211 of 2,231 hostnames (9.46%) were Zendesk help centres, usually help or support subdomains, and 209 sent the header. Across the clean list, 13,420 domains also carry a Zendesk detection.

How do you check whether a site uses Envoy?

Request the page and read the response headers, for example with curl -sI followed by the address. Look for Server: envoy, istio-envoy, or x-envoy-upstream-service-time. Behind a CDN the header often survives, as it does on Cloudflare-fronted Zendesk sites. Some bot checks block plain requests, which is why 411 of the hostnames in our sample were blocked with a 403 or similar and showed no header.
