Our live crawl answers 16,312 domains from an Amazon ELB, fifth in Load Balancers & Proxies on 5.33%. 6,720 of those match to a company record, so 41.20% of the analysis below carries firmographics.

Two facts shape how that number should be read, and both cut the same way.

The first is departure. 927 domains that we watched drop Amazon ELB now answer from an Amazon ALB, 917 of them inside 90 days, against 131 moving the other way. Only 1.6% of that group still runs the Classic balancer anywhere, and just 4.08% of all ELB domains show an ALB as well — these two products replace each other, they do not stack.

The second is concentration. 3,837 of the 17,024 domains we currently see on Amazon ELB — 22.5% — carry an identical four-part fingerprint: DNN, Pendo, Segment and OneTrust, at matching rates. They are the tenant sites of a single hosting platform serving US youth sports leagues, all sitting behind one Classic balancer. Nearly a quarter of this page's population is one customer, not a market, and it moves every distribution below.

Amazon ELB Usage Statistics

Our rollup reads 9,306 domains for Amazon ELB in June 2026, 11,838 in July and 16,312 in August. That rise is our coverage expanding, not the Classic balancer gaining ground — the crawl as a whole grew from 321.0M to 352.2M active detections across the same months. Against a 927-to-131 outflow to Amazon ALB, reading this chart as adoption would be the wrong conclusion entirely.

There are 16,312 companies and domains where we detect Amazon ELB, sign up to download the entire Amazon ELB dataset.

The recognisable companies using Amazon ELB share a deployment pattern with Amazon ALB, and the hostnames say it plainly: CBRE on careers.cbre.com, Jacobs on careers.jacobs.com, Molex on mlxauth.molex.com, the University of South Carolina on blackboard.sc.edu and ICICI Prudential on corporatepartnerportal.iciciprulife.com.

Careers sites, authentication endpoints, partner portals and a learning-management system are all long-lived internal applications. They are exactly the workloads least likely to be migrated for the sake of it, which is a large part of why a balancer AWS has been steering customers away from still answers on 16,312 domains.

Which Countries Use Amazon ELB the Most?

Which countries use Amazon ELB the most? The United States takes 63.75% of the 6,453 companies where we hold a country — 4,114 domains against 359 for the United Kingdom. That is 11 points more US-concentrated than Amazon ALB, and the tenant fleet described above is the reason: those sites are US youth-sports leagues almost without exception.

Share of the 6,720 Amazon ELB domains we matched to a company record — 41.2% of the 16,312 we detect. Top 15 countries shown, so these do not sum to 100%. Domains with no matching company record are not represented here and skew small and independent.

Amazon ELB Market Share Among Load Balancers & Proxies

What is Amazon ELB's market share? Amazon ELB holds 5.33% of Load Balancers & Proxies on 16,312 domains, fifth of twelve. Its detection surface is actually wider than Amazon ALB's — we match either an AWSELB cookie or a Server: awselb header, where ALB is cookie-only — so the four-to-one gap between them understates rather than exaggerates how far ahead the newer balancer is.

Amazon ELB Customers by Company Size & Age

What size companies use Amazon ELB? 57.24% of the 6,209 sized companies have 1-10 employees. Treat that figure with care rather than as a finding about load balancers — the 3,837-domain platform fleet is made up of small volunteer-run sports organisations, and it lands almost entirely in this band. The enterprise end of the list, from Hewlett Packard Enterprise to Toyota, is where the independent deployments sit.

Company Size Distribution

Company Age (Founded Decade)

The 2010s lead at 34.58% of the 2,672 companies with a founding year, ahead of the 2000s at 16.62%. An 11.56% pre-1960 block accounts for the universities, insurers and manufacturers that appear near the top of the company list — organisations whose portals long predate the current generation of AWS balancers.

What Industries Use Amazon ELB the Most?

Retail leads at 12.31% of the 5,468 classifiable companies, but the second row is the one that needs explaining. Spectator Sports at 10.74% is not a market for load balancers; it is 587 US youth-sports league sites belonging to one hosting platform, and it is the visible tip of a 3,837-domain fleet.

Software Development243 (4.44%)
Financial Services215 (3.93%)
IT Services and IT Consulting190 (3.47%)

The Spectator Sports cluster is a single platform, not an industry. Of the 587 companies in that row, 94.4% run DNN and Microsoft ASP.NET, and the same 94.4% run OneTrust, Segment and Pendo. Real market segments have scattered stacks; identical percentages across a CMS, a consent tool and a product-analytics tag mean the software was installed once by a platform rather than chosen by each organisation. Excluding it, Retail's lead over Software Development is the genuine shape of this distribution.

Amazon ELB Alternatives & Competitors

Envoy leads Load Balancers & Proxies on 111,282 domains, followed by Amazon ALB (69,748), Google Cloud Load Balancing (50,798) and Azure Front Door (48,175), with Amazon ELB fifth on 16,312. Within AWS the comparison that matters is the first of those: the newer balancer is more than four times larger, and the traffic between them runs one way.

Amazon ELB Customer Migration

927 domains left Amazon ELB for an Amazon ALB, 917 of them within 90 days, against 131 arriving from the newer balancer — a seven-to-one split. Only 1.6% of the leavers still answer from a Classic balancer on any hostname, so this is replacement rather than the two running side by side, and just 4.08% of all ELB domains show an ALB at all. We measured the same corridor against every other balancer in the category and found nothing publishable: those flows came back symmetric in both directions, which is what measurement drift looks like rather than switching.

Tech Stack of Amazon ELB-Powered Websites

Amazon ELB's co-occurrence table is dominated by the platform fleet. DNN appears on 23.01% of ELB domains, with Pendo (23.16%), Segment (23.56%), OneTrust (23.94%) and Microsoft ASP.NET (25.93%) clustered at almost the same rate — one platform, counted five ways. Outside that block, Amazon Web Services reads 40.9%, Amazon S3 25.08% and Cloudflare 31.32%, so roughly a third of these domains put a third-party edge in front of the AWS balancer.

Expert Analysis: Amazon ELB Growth Trends & Key Signals for Sales Teams in 2026

David Thomson
David ThomsonCTO, TechnologyChecker

A quarter of this page is one customer

The first thing I check on any profile is whether the distributions describe a market or a coincidence. Amazon ELB failed that check immediately: Spectator Sports came back as the second-largest industry at 10.74%, which is not a plausible market structure for a load balancer.

The co-occurrence table settled it. Of the 587 companies in that row, 94.4% run DNN and Microsoft ASP.NET — and the same 94.4% run OneTrust, Segment and Pendo. That identical rate across a content management system, a consent manager and a product-analytics tag is the giveaway. Genuine market segments have scattered stacks, because each organisation picks its own tools. Matching percentages across unrelated layers mean the software was installed once, by a platform, for all of them.

Widening the test past the industry label found the real size of it: 3,837 of 17,024 domains, 22.5% of everything we see on Amazon ELB, carry the full four-part fingerprint. The LinkedIn industry field had only shown me the 587 that happened to be classified. Nearly a quarter of this product's measured footprint is one platform's tenant list, and every distribution on this page — company size especially — is pulled by it. I have left the numbers as measured and flagged them in place rather than quietly excluding the fleet, because a reader comparing us against another source needs to see the same total.

The wider rule makes the gap more damning, not less

There is an asymmetry between the two AWS balancers that is easy to get backwards. We identify Amazon ALB only through the AWSALB cookie, which requires target-group stickiness to be switched on. We identify Amazon ELB through either an AWSELB cookie or a Server: awselb header, and the header needs no configuration at all.

So the Classic balancer has the easier rule of the two, and still reads 16,312 domains against ALB's 69,748. The four-to-one gap is a floor on the real difference. I checked that the header clause was not quietly sweeping up ALBs as well: only 694 domains, 4.08% of the ELB population, show both.

Why the leavers are the story and the chart is not

Our three rollups show Amazon ELB rising from 9,306 to 16,312 domains, and I want to be direct that this is our crawl growing rather than the product recovering. Corpus-wide, active detections went from 321.0M to 352.2M over the same months.

The measurement I do trust is the corridor, because it is a ratio between two things measured the same way. 927 domains left for an ALB against 131 arriving, and 1.6% of the leavers still answer from a Classic balancer anywhere. I applied the same test to every other pair in the category and published none of them: Envoy showed 63 in and 73 out, Google Cloud Load Balancing 10 and 9. Flows that balance in both directions are what a recrawl produces when it loses sight of two technologies at once. A seven-to-one split is not.

What is left behind

Strip out the platform fleet and the remaining Amazon ELB population has a consistent shape: careers sites, authentication endpoints, partner portals, a university's learning-management system. careers.cbre.com, mlxauth.molex.com, blackboard.sc.edu. These are applications that work, that nobody owns an urgent reason to touch, and that carry real migration risk for no visible user benefit. That is a more useful description of who still runs a Classic balancer than any share figure on this page.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who uses Amazon ELB?

We detect Amazon ELB on 16,312 domains, 6,720 of which match to a company record. The population has two distinct halves: large organisations running long-lived internal applications — Hewlett Packard Enterprise, CBRE, Jacobs, Toyota, ICICI Prudential — and a 3,837-domain fleet of US youth-sports league sites belonging to a single hosting platform.

How many customers does Amazon ELB have?

Our August 2026 rollup reads 16,312 domains. Roughly 22.5% of the domains we currently see are tenant sites of one platform rather than independent adopters, so the count of distinct organisations choosing Amazon ELB is materially lower than the domain count.

What is Amazon ELB's market share?

5.33% of Load Balancers & Proxies, fifth of twelve. Its share is not shrinking in our three rollups, but that is a coverage artefact rather than stability — the 927-to-131 outflow to Amazon ALB is the number that describes the direction of this product.

What are the best alternatives to Amazon ELB?

For anyone already on AWS the answer our data supports is Amazon ALB, which is where 927 domains went. Outside AWS, the equivalents are Azure Front Door and Google Cloud Load Balancing on the other large clouds, or Envoy if you would rather run the balancer yourself.

Which countries use Amazon ELB the most?

The United States, on 4,114 of the 6,453 companies where we hold a country — 63.75%. That is more US-concentrated than Amazon ALB at 52.59%, largely because the youth-sports platform fleet is almost entirely American.

What size companies use Amazon ELB?

57.24% of the 6,209 sized companies have 1-10 employees, but that figure is inflated by the platform fleet of small volunteer-run sports organisations. The independent deployments cluster at the other end of the range, among enterprises running careers and authentication portals.

How old are companies that use Amazon ELB?

The 2010s lead at 34.58% of the 2,672 companies with a founding year, followed by the 2000s at 16.62%. An 11.56% pre-1960 block covers the universities, insurers and manufacturers near the top of the company list.

What is the ideal customer profile for Amazon ELB?

A US organisation running an established internal web application — a careers site, partner portal, authentication endpoint or learning-management system — on infrastructure that predates the current generation of AWS balancers and has not yet been migrated.

What does an Amazon ELB detection actually mean?

It means the hostname either returned an AWSELB cookie or answered with a Server header containing awselb. Unlike Amazon ALB, which we can only see when target-group stickiness is enabled, the header clause fires regardless of configuration — so Amazon ELB has the wider detection surface of the two.

Is Amazon ELB the same as Amazon ALB?

No. Amazon ELB here is the original Classic load balancer, operating at the connection level; Amazon ALB is the newer layer-7 balancer that routes on HTTP content. We identify them through different signals and count them separately, and only 4.08% of Amazon ELB domains also show an ALB.

Are companies moving off Amazon ELB?

Yes. 927 domains dropped Amazon ELB and now answer from an Amazon ALB, 917 within 90 days, against 131 in the reverse direction. Only 1.6% of the leavers still run a Classic balancer on any hostname, which makes this a replacement rather than a gradual coexistence.

Why is Spectator Sports the second-largest industry?

Because it is not really an industry in this data. Those 587 companies are US youth-sports leagues hosted on a single platform: 94.4% of them run DNN and Microsoft ASP.NET, and the same 94.4% run OneTrust, Segment and Pendo. Identical rates across unrelated software mean one platform installed all of it, and the wider fleet reaches 3,837 domains once you count sites without an industry label.

Do companies run Amazon ELB alongside a CDN?

Around a third do. Cloudflare appears on 31.32% of Amazon ELB domains and Amazon CloudFront on 21.26%. As with any load balancer, the CDN caches and shields at the edge while the balancer distributes traffic to targets behind it.

Is Amazon ELB being retired?

We do not track vendor roadmaps, so we will not characterise AWS's plans. What our crawl can say is that the movement between the two products is one-directional and heavily so — 927 domains out against 131 in over the period we have observed — and that the domains still on it are dominated by long-lived internal applications and one large hosting platform.
