Companies Using Amazon S3

Our August 2026 crawl detects Amazon S3 on 659,040 domains, which makes it the most widely seen technology in the Cloud Infrastructure category at 86.13% share. Below you'll find a list of companies using Amazon S3 with market share, industry breakdowns and geographic data.

Read that number as asset delivery, not as account ownership. S3 is detected either from response headers on a site's own pages or from any asset loaded over an s3…amazonaws.com URL, and path-style S3 URLs carry the bucket name in the path rather than the hostname. That means a site embedding a vendor's widget from a shared bucket is counted the same way as a site serving its own files. We measured how often that happens and publish the result below rather than leaving it implied.

Amazon S3 Usage Statistics

Amazon S3 is detected on 659,040 domains in our August 2026 crawl. The recent series runs 486,371 (June 2026) to 659,040 (August), and that climb is our coverage expanding rather than S3 adding 35% of its footprint in a quarter.

The long-run series ends in December 2024 at 418,638 domains. We stop it there because the months after it shed inactive records faster than they added live ones, so the apparent decline through 2025 is an artifact of how that series was maintained rather than customers leaving. Treat the two segments as separate observations and do not measure growth across the gap.

List of Companies Using Amazon S3

The domains below are those where we detect S3, ordered by company prominence. Treat this list as sites that load assets from S3, not as confirmed S3 account holders. We checked all 50: none serve their own pages from an S3 origin, and five sit behind CloudFront. That is the expected result rather than a surprising one, because large organisations do not serve a corporate homepage from a storage bucket, though their pages routinely load vendor widgets that do.

Sorting by prominence therefore selects against first-party evidence. On a random sample of 130 detected domains the first-party rate was 24.4%, far higher than in this list. If you need confirmed account holders rather than asset relationships, work from the random cohort, not from the recognisable names.

There are 659,040 companies and domains where we detect Amazon S3, sign up to download the entire Amazon S3 dataset.

The most recognizable domains where we detect Amazon S3 assets are below. These are asset relationships observed in our crawl, not confirmations that the organisation holds an AWS account:

  • IBM - ibm.com loads assets served from S3
  • Siemens - siemens.com, same pattern
  • Bank of America - bankofamerica.com, served behind CloudFront
  • Starbucks - starbucks.com
  • Samsung - samsung.com
  • HSBC - hsbc.com
  • HDFC Bank - hdfcbank.com
  • US Department of Veterans Affairs - va.gov
  • University of California - universityofcalifornia.edu
  • Mahindra & Mahindra - mahindra.com

AWS's own published case studies separately name Snap, Netflix, the BBC, Pinterest and Nasdaq as S3 customers at exabyte scale. Those are the vendor's disclosures, not our detections.

Which Countries Use Amazon S3 the Most?

The United States leads with 140,580 domains (46.26%), followed by the United Kingdom on 26,150 (8.61%), Brazil on 15,316 (5.04%) and India on 12,596 (4.15%). Percentages are computed over the 303,872 S3 domains where we hold a country, not over all 659,040.

S3 is the most US-weighted of the deployment and storage profiles we publish, ahead of CloudFront at 36.71% and Netlify at 33.64%. That fits a service sold heavily through AWS's home market.

Amazon S3 Market Share Among Cloud Infrastructure

Amazon S3 leads the Cloud Infrastructure category with 86.13% share on 659,040 domains, ahead of DigitalOcean Spaces (5.44%), Google Cloud Storage (3.43%) and Alibaba Cloud (2.45%).

That 86% is partly a rule-strictness artifact and we would rather say so. Google Cloud Storage is detected only by a response header its own servers emit, which is a strictly first-party signal. Amazon S3 is detected by that kind of header and by any asset URL pointing at an S3 endpoint, which is a much looser net. The two counts are not built the same way, so the 25-to-1 gap between them overstates the real difference in deployment. The ranking is right; the magnitude is not something we would defend to a decimal place.

Amazon S3 Customers by Company Size & Age

82.96% of enriched S3 domains belong to companies under 50 staff and 2.34% to companies above 1,000, measured across 301,239 domains carrying a size band. The small-business weighting is real, but it is also what you would expect from a signal that fires on any embedded asset: small sites are the ones most likely to load a widget from a third-party bucket.

S3 is meaningfully less small-business-weighted than the deployment platforms in our data. Netlify is 91.32% under 50 and Vercel 89.73%, against S3's 82.96%.

What Industries Use Amazon S3 the Most?

Software Development leads at 6.05%, with Retail close behind at 5.68%, then Financial Services (4.60%), IT Services (4.09%) and Real Estate (3.81%), across the 277,914 S3 domains carrying an industry label.

No industry reaches 7%, and that flatness is the finding. A product with a specific buyer spikes somewhere. S3's distribution is close to the shape of the general web, which is consistent with a signal that fires on asset delivery rather than on a purchasing decision. The same flatness appears on AWS, whose top industry reaches only 8.07%.

Software Development16,825 (6.05%)
Retail15,798 (5.68%)
Financial Services12,776 (4.6%)
IT Services and IT Consulting11,376 (4.09%)
Real Estate10,580 (3.81%)
Technology, Information and Internet9,991 (3.59%)

Software development companies using Amazon S3 form the largest vertical at 6.05%, narrowly ahead of retail brands on Amazon S3 at 5.68%, which typically serve product imagery and media from buckets. Financial services firms follow at 4.60%. Retail ranking second is the clearest sign of the asset-delivery pattern: storefronts carry more third-party media and tracking widgets than most site types, and each of those can trigger the detection.

Amazon S3 Alternatives & Competitors

Within Cloud Infrastructure, S3 is first of 19 at 86.13%, ahead of DigitalOcean Spaces (5.44%), Google Cloud Storage (3.43%), Alibaba Cloud (2.45%) and Alibaba Cloud Object Storage (1.46%).

The table is best read as a ranking, not as a ratio. Object storage is bought as part of a cloud contract rather than chosen on its own, and each of these products is detected by a rule of different strictness. S3's own companion service, CloudFront, appears on 26.76% of S3 domains, which is the more useful number here: it says how often the two are deployed together, not which one won.

Amazon S3 Customer Migration

The striking thing about S3's churn is how little of it there is. Across every competitor we measured, roughly 500 domains left S3 and 254 arrived, against a base of 659,040. That is under 0.1% of the footprint moving in either direction.

The largest single corridor is DigitalOcean Spaces, where S3 is ahead 202 gained to 160 lost. It is behind on Google Cloud Storage (39 gained, 101 lost), Docker (3 against 87) and Alibaba Cloud Object Storage (1 against 56). At these volumes none of it is a market-share story; object storage is sticky because moving it means moving the data. Our churn window is short, so read these as observed movements rather than a lifetime ledger.

Tech Stack of Amazon S3-Powered Websites

The most useful co-occurrence on this page is internal: 49.17% of S3 domains also detect AWS and 26.76% detect CloudFront. Roughly half the S3 footprint shows a second Amazon signal, which is the closest thing this page has to independent corroboration that the domain really is on AWS.

Outside Amazon, the pattern is ordinary web: Google Tag Manager 71.6%, Google Analytics 70.37%, core-js 58.18%, jQuery 56.74%. Cloudflare appears on 40.9%, which is the familiar arrangement of origin storage on S3 with a different vendor's edge in front. Tailwind CSS reaches 31.3% against jQuery's 56.74%, a much more legacy-weighted mix than the deployment platforms show.

Amazon S3 Customer Reviews with Pros and Cons

Across 941 G2 reviews (rated 4.6 out of 5), Amazon S3 scores highest for scalability and durability, with users citing the 11-nines durability guarantee. The most common criticism relates to pricing complexity, particularly data egress costs ($0.09/GB) and the confusion of managing eight storage tiers. Competitors like Cloudflare R2 charge zero for egress, which is consistent with the 40.9% of S3 domains that also detect Cloudflare in front of them.

Generated from real user reviews on G2

  • The data egress costs ($0.09/GB for the first 10 TB) can be surprisingly high. Competitors like Cloudflare R2 charge zero for egress.(89 reviews)
  • Users criticize the S3 console interface as difficult to navigate when managing large numbers of buckets and objects across multiple regions.(70 reviews)
  • Without close monitoring, users find it easy to misconfigure bucket permissions, potentially exposing sensitive data publicly.(61 reviews)

Expert Analysis: Amazon S3 Growth Trends & Key Signals for Sales Teams in 2026

Mehmet Suleyman
Mehmet SuleymanCEO & Co-founder, TechnologyChecker

This is a read of Amazon S3 from our own crawl: 659,040 domains in August 2026, 320,035 of them matched to a company record. Before any of that is useful, the headline number needs an honest description, because S3 is the clearest case in our dataset of a count that measures something narrower than it appears to.

1. What a detection actually proves

S3 fires on two very different kinds of evidence. One is a response header on the site's own pages, server: AmazonS3 or an x-amz- header, which does imply the domain owner is serving from S3. The other is any asset loaded over an s3…amazonaws.com URL. The second is far looser, and the reason is a detail of how S3 addresses buckets: in path-style URLs the bucket name sits in the path, not the hostname. Our own crawl sees s3-us-west-2.amazonaws.com on 105,832 domains and s3.amazonaws.com on another 135,000. Those hostnames identify a region, not an owner.

We measured the split rather than guessing at it. On a random sample of 130 active S3 domains, 24.4% returned a first-party S3 or AWS header on their own response and 70.7% returned none. That check has a known blind spot, since a site running on EC2 while storing its images in its own bucket reads as no-signal, so 70.7% is an upper bound on "not an account holder". The direction is not in doubt.

"S3's determinism is 0.985, one of the cleanest reproducibility scores we publish. That measures whether we see the same thing twice, not whether the thing means what you assume. A stable signal on a mixed population is more dangerous than a noisy one, because every diagnostic looks healthy." - Mehmet Suleyman, CEO at TechnologyChecker.io

2. Why the famous-brand list is the worst slice of it

We ran the same first-party check on the 50 most prominent companies in our S3 detections. None of them serve their own pages from an S3 origin. Five sit behind CloudFront and the rest show no first-party AWS signal at all, against 24.4% in the random sample.

That is not a contradiction, it is a selection effect worth naming. Large organisations never serve a corporate homepage out of a raw storage bucket, but their pages carry more third-party widgets than anyone else's, and each of those can load from a vendor's shared bucket. Sorting a company list by prominence systematically selects for the attribution failure. Anyone building a prospect list off recognisable names on a signal like this one is working from the least reliable end of it.

Sales Signal: Use the random cohort, not the logo wall. If you need confirmed account holders, filter for domains showing a first-party AWS header and accept a much smaller, much truer list.

3. Customer profile

82.96% of enriched S3 domains belong to companies under 50 staff and 2.34% to companies above 1,000, across 301,239 domains with a size band. Set against the deployment platforms, S3 is the least small-business-weighted of the group: Netlify is 91.32% under 50 and Vercel 89.73%. On founding date, 38.56% started in the 2010s and 6.09% predate 1960, a longer tail of old institutions than any deployment platform shows.

4. Industry and geography

Software Development leads at 6.05% and Retail is almost level at 5.68%. Nothing reaches 7%, and that flatness is itself the result. A product with a defined buyer spikes somewhere; S3's distribution looks like the shape of the web. Retail placing second is the asset-delivery pattern showing through, since storefronts carry more third-party media and tracking than most site types.

The United States is 46.26% of the enriched footprint, ahead of the UK on 8.61% and Brazil on 5.04%. S3 is the most US-weighted profile in this group.

5. Migration

Roughly 500 domains left S3 for a competitor we track and 254 arrived, under 0.1% of a 659,040-domain base. S3 is ahead against DigitalOcean Spaces (202 gained, 160 lost) and behind against Google Cloud Storage (39 against 101), Docker (3 against 87) and Alibaba Cloud Object Storage (1 against 56). None of it is material at this scale.

That stillness is the real finding. Object storage is the stickiest layer of a cloud contract because switching means physically moving the data and rewriting every reference to it.

Sales Signal: Do not sell against S3 on price alone. The migration data says almost nobody moves. The realistic opening is a new workload, not an existing bucket.

6. Technology ecosystem

49.17% of S3 domains also detect AWS and 26.76% detect CloudFront. That second Amazon signal is the most valuable corroboration available on this page: where it is present, the domain is far more likely to be a genuine AWS account than a site embedding someone else's widget.

Cloudflare appears on 40.9%, the familiar arrangement of origin storage on one vendor with a different vendor's edge in front. The rest is ordinary web: Google Tag Manager 71.6%, Google Analytics 70.37%, jQuery 56.74%.

7. Key takeaways

1. 659,040 domains, first of 19 in Cloud Infrastructure at 86.13%.

2. That 86% is partly rule strictness. Google Cloud Storage is detected only by a first-party header; S3 is detected by that plus any asset URL. The gap between them overstates the real one.

3. About 24.4% of a random sample showed first-party S3 or AWS evidence on their own response.

4. None of the 50 most prominent detections did. Prominence selects against first-party evidence.

5. Churn is under 0.1% in either direction. Object storage does not move.

6. Half the footprint carries a second Amazon signal, which is the best available corroboration.

8. Sales applications

Targeting strategy: Cross-reference S3 with a second AWS detection before treating a domain as an AWS account. Roughly half the base clears that bar and it is a far better prospect list than the raw count.

Competitive angle: Egress pricing is the live complaint in review data, and it is why Cloudflare shows up in front of 40.9% of S3 origins. The wedge is delivery cost, not storage.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who uses Amazon S3?

We detect Amazon S3 on 659,040 domains, including IBM, Siemens AG, Bank of America. A detection means the technology is present on that domain, which for large organisations is often a single storefront or subdomain rather than a company-wide deployment. Among domains we matched to a company with a resolved industry, the most common is Software Development (6.05%).

How many customers does Amazon S3 have?

We detect 659,040 domains running Amazon S3 across our monthly crawl of live business domains. Company data could be matched for 320,035 of them (48.6%), and every company-size, industry and country breakdown on this page describes that matched subset rather than the full detected base. A further 75,639 domains carried a Amazon S3 detection previously and no longer do.

What is Amazon S3's market share?

Amazon S3 holds 86.13% of the Cloud Infrastructure category, ranking #1. This is a share of the domains we detect running a platform in this category — not a share of all websites, and not a share of spending — so it is not directly comparable to figures published on other denominators.

What are the best alternatives to Amazon S3?

The top alternatives to Amazon S3 include DigitalOcean Spaces (5.44% market share), Google Cloud Storage (3.43% market share), Alibaba Cloud (2.45% market share), Alibaba Cloud Object Storage Service (1.46% market share) — measured as a share of the domains we detect running a platform in this category.

Which countries use Amazon S3 the most?

United States leads with 140,580 matched Amazon S3 domains, followed by United Kingdom (26,149), Brazil (15,316), India (12,596), Canada (11,672). These are counts within the 320,035 domains we could match to a company record, not the full detected base.

What size companies use Amazon S3?

The most common company size is 1-10 employees, representing 57.81% of the Amazon S3 domains we could match to a company record and size — a subset of 320,035 matched companies, not of all 659,040 detected domains. This is followed by 11-50 employees (25.15%) and 51-200 employees (9.84%).

How old are companies that use Amazon S3?

Among the Amazon S3 domains we could match to a company with a known founding date, the largest group was founded in the 2010s (38.56%), followed by the 2020s (21.74%). That matched subset is drawn from 320,035 companies and is not representative of all 659,040 detected domains. This suggests Amazon S3 is most popular among relatively young companies.

What is the ideal customer profile for Amazon S3?

The ideal Amazon S3 customer is: Company Size: 1-10 employees, Location: US, UK, or Brazil, City: New York, London, Seattle, Mumbai, Founded: 2010-2019, Company Age: ~7-16 years old — based on our analysis of 320,035 enriched companies at TechnologyChecker.io.

Is Amazon S3 free to use?

AWS changed its Free Tier in July 2025. New accounts now receive up to $200 in Free Tier credits valid for 6 months, applicable to S3 and other services. Accounts created before July 2025 still get the old model: 5 GB Standard storage, 20,000 GETs, and 2,000 PUTs per month for 12 months. After credits expire, Standard storage costs $0.023/GB/month (first 50 TB). For comparison, Cloudflare R2 charges $0.015/GB with zero egress fees.

What is the difference between Amazon S3 and CloudFront?

Amazon S3 is object storage for files, images and backups. CloudFront is a CDN that caches and delivers content from S3 or another origin at edge locations worldwide. They are commonly deployed together: our crawl detects CloudFront on 26.76% of the domains where we detect S3, and detects another AWS signal on 49.17% of them.

What are the disadvantages of S3 buckets?

Based on G2 review data, the top complaints are pricing complexity (167 mentions), steep learning curve for IAM and bucket policies (143 mentions), and unexpected data egress costs (112 mentions). Misconfigured bucket permissions have also caused public data exposure incidents. S3 is not a traditional file system and lacks native querying without Athena or S3 Select.

Is Amazon S3 redundant?

S3 Standard stores data redundantly across at least three Availability Zones within a region, delivering 99.999999999% (11 nines) durability. This means if you store 10 million objects, you can expect to lose one object every 10,000 years. S3 One Zone-IA stores data in a single AZ and is less durable but cheaper for reproducible data.

What industries use Amazon S3 the most?

Across the 277,914 S3 domains where we hold an industry label, Software Development leads at 6.05%, followed by Retail (5.68%), Financial Services (4.60%), IT Services (4.09%) and Real Estate (3.81%). No industry reaches 7%. That flatness is expected, because our S3 signal fires on asset delivery rather than on a purchasing decision, so it tracks the shape of the web.

How does Amazon S3 compare to Azure Blob Storage?

They are direct competitors in cloud object storage. S3 has by far the larger detected footprint in our data at 659,040 domains. The comparison is imperfect, because the two are detected by rules of different strictness and object storage is normally bought as part of a wider cloud contract rather than chosen on its own merits, so neither count reflects a head-to-head purchase.

What is Amazon S3 Intelligent-Tiering?

S3 Intelligent-Tiering automatically moves objects between access tiers based on usage patterns. It shifts infrequently accessed data to lower-cost tiers (Infrequent Access after 30 days, Archive Instant Access after 90 days) without retrieval fees. The monitoring fee is $0.0025 per 1,000 objects per month. Per AWS's March 2026 20th-anniversary post, Intelligent-Tiering has saved customers over $6 billion collectively compared to S3 Standard.

Can Amazon S3 host a static website?

Yes. S3 supports static website hosting with a custom index and error document, serving HTML, CSS, JavaScript and images directly from a bucket. In a random sample of 130 domains where we detect S3, roughly 15% returned an S3 origin header on their own homepage, which is the signature of exactly this pattern. Most production sites put a CDN in front.

What is the maximum file size for Amazon S3?

Individual objects in S3 can be up to 50 TB, a 10x increase from the previous 5 TB limit announced at AWS re:Invent in December 2025. Single PUT operations support up to 5 GB; for larger files, multipart upload splits the file into parts uploaded in parallel. There's no limit on the number of objects per bucket or total storage capacity. At launch in 2006, the max was just 5 GB.

How do Amazon S3 storage classes differ?

S3 offers eight storage classes. Standard ($0.023/GB) handles frequent access. Intelligent-Tiering auto-moves data between tiers. Standard-IA ($0.0125/GB) and One Zone-IA ($0.01/GB) suit infrequent access. Express One Zone, launched November 2023, delivers single-digit millisecond latency at 10x faster than Standard. Glacier Instant Retrieval, Glacier Flexible Retrieval (minutes to hours), and Glacier Deep Archive ($0.00099/GB, 12-48 hour retrieval) cover archival workloads.

Is Amazon S3 HIPAA compliant?

Yes. Amazon S3 is HIPAA eligible when used with a signed Business Associate Agreement (BAA) with AWS. S3 supports server-side encryption (SSE-S3, SSE-KMS, SSE-C), access logging via CloudTrail, and fine-grained IAM policies required for HIPAA compliance. Our data shows healthcare companies like Kaiser Permanente, CVS Health, and HCA Healthcare all use S3.

Why are Amazon S3 data transfer costs so high?

S3 charges $0.09/GB for the first 10 TB/month of outbound data transfer. For a site serving 10 TB monthly, that's roughly $900 in egress alone. Cloudflare R2, an S3-compatible alternative, charges zero for egress and 35% less for storage ($0.015/GB vs. $0.023/GB). Our tech stack data shows 40.9% of S3 domains also detect Cloudflare, likely caching S3 content at Cloudflare's edge to reduce these egress bills.
