OpenCart Usage Statistics

OpenCart entered our crawl in May 2008, just before Daniel Kerr shipped the first stable PHP release (v1.1.1, February 2009). Our active install count peaked at 29,798 domains in March 2025 and has softened to 22,016 by July. The broader population looks the same: Store Leads reports -12% year-over-year store loss in 2026 Q1 across its full 169,925-store crawl. The platform's last big upswing was v4.1.0.3 in March 2025, but the long-term trend is plateau.

OpenCart Customers by Company Size & Age

Is OpenCart only for small businesses? Yes, almost entirely. With 77% of OpenCart customers running 1-10 employee shops in our enriched sample and 91% under 50, it is the textbook self-hosted choice for owner-operators and micro-businesses. Store Leads confirms this from a different angle: 17.4% of OpenCart stores list fewer than 10 products on the storefront, and another 12.6% sell 250-999 products. Larger detections (501+ employees) sit at 1.3% combined and almost always belong to departmental microsites rather than company-wide commerce, based on our analysis of 9,217 enriched companies.

What Industries Use OpenCart the Most?

Retail is the dominant industry at 20.0% of enriched OpenCart customers, more than 6x the next vertical. Wholesale (3.2%) and IT Services (3.0%) follow, with general manufacturing, electronics, and textile categories collectively pulling another 6.4%. Store Leads categorizes the underlying storefronts by what they sell rather than the company industry, and reaches a similar picture: Home & Garden leads at 16.2%, Apparel at 12.4%, Computers at 7.1%, and Business & Industrial at 6.7%. The long tail is significant, with no single category exceeding 17%.

Apparel and fashion stores using OpenCart have been profiled in third-party showcases for years, with examples like BALR (Dutch premium menswear) featured in iSenseLabs review of OpenCart fashion stores.

OpenCart Alternatives & Competitors

OpenCart's competitive set sits at the tail of an increasingly consolidated category, based on our market share data across 50M+ crawled domains. Wix Stores (7.74%) dominates the SMB hosted segment, while Ecwid (2.58%) wins on embed-anywhere flexibility. Among open-source PHP peers, PrestaShop (0.75%) leads, followed by OpenCart and Magento (0.44%). Independent migration tracking from Store Leads shows the same competitive pressure: in the last 90 days OpenCart gained 1,076 stores from rival platforms (424 from WooCommerce, 396 from custom carts, 80 from Shopify) but lost 1,508 stores to competitors, for a net 90-day deficit of 432.

Expert Analysis: OpenCart Growth Trends & Key Signals for Sales Teams in 2026

Mehmet Suleyman
Mehmet SuleymanCEO & Co-founder, TechnologyChecker

With 10+ years building technographic data pipelines, I've watched OpenCart occupy a strange spot in the ecommerce platform category: too small to make headlines, too persistent to disappear. As of our February 2026 crawl, we track 29,460 active OpenCart domains, of which we've enriched 9,217 companies via LinkedIn, a 29.8% match rate that reflects the platform's heavy SMB skew. This analysis combines that dataset with the broader 169,925-store population tracked by Store Leads and review signals from G2 and Capterra.

1. Growth trajectory

OpenCart entered our crawl in May 2008, a year before Daniel Kerr's first stable PHP release (v1.1.1, February 2009). Adoption climbed steadily through the 2010s, hit roughly 25,000 domains by 2020, and peaked at 29,798 active installs in March 2025. The recent shape matters: between March and July 2025, active domains dropped to 22,016, a 26% slide in five months. The market share rank (#10 of 43) hasn't moved much, but absolute install counts are softening. Wider data confirms the trend, with Store Leads reporting a -12% year-over-year decline across its 169,925-store crawl in 2026 Q1.

"OpenCart's curve looks more like a long-lived utility than a high-growth platform. It's been hovering near 30,000 active installs for three years, and the recent dip suggests the long tail is finally migrating to hosted carts." - Mehmet Suleyman, CEO at TechnologyChecker.io

Sales Signal: This isn't an expanding market. OpenCart prospect lists are best treated as migration targets, not greenfield. Sales teams selling hosted ecommerce, payment, or analytics tools should prioritize OpenCart accounts that have been active 3+ years and are likely evaluating Shopify, Wix, or PrestaShop.

2. Customer profile

The OpenCart customer is, almost without exception, a micro-business. 77.4% have 1-10 employees, another 13.8% sit at 11-50, and only 1.3% exceed 500 employees. The age skew tells the rest of the story: 41.3% were founded in the 2010s, 22.1% in the 2000s, and only 9.9% in the 2020s, a cohort of mature independent merchants rather than new digital-native brands.

Where the data gets interesting is the enterprise tail. We do detect Virgin, Juniper Networks, AARP, FINRA, MedStar Health, Quikrete, Siam Cement, and the Brazilian Senado on OpenCart. But cross-referencing detection subdomains shows almost all of these are departmental microsites: shop.montrochelle.virgin.com (a single wine brand within Virgin Group), branded merchandise stores at Juniper and AARP, accessory shops at Quikrete. None of these are primary commerce. The same pattern shows up in Store Leads' top-ranked OpenCart stores, where brands like KODAK PIXPRO Digital Cameras and Walton Group sit alongside small independents like Flagdom and Farm Plastic Supply.

Sales Signal: If you're targeting OpenCart accounts, qualify the use case before pitching. The same domain can host an OpenCart microsite and a Salesforce Commerce Cloud main store. Tools for SMB self-hosted merchants (managed PHP hosting, payment gateways, SEO plugins) are the natural fit; enterprise-grade integration platforms are not.

3. Industry & geographic concentration

OpenCart shows two different geographic profiles depending on whether you look at LinkedIn-matched companies or raw storefronts. In our enriched data, Brazil leads the country mix at 10.4%, ahead of the UK (9.5%) and the US (8.4%). In the broader unenriched population, Store Leads ranks Russia at 17.5% and Ukraine at 9.8% ahead of everything else, because Eastern European storefronts are under-represented in LinkedIn data. Either lens agrees that English-speaking markets sit at roughly 23% combined, less than half what we see on Shopify or Mailchimp. This is a genuinely global platform, with emerging markets and southern/eastern Europe overrepresented.

The industry mix is just as informative. Retail dominates at 20.0% of enriched companies, but the next nine industries together pull only 22%: wholesale, IT services, manufacturing, restaurants, electronics, fashion, food services, technology, and textiles each contribute 1.6-3.2%. Store Leads categorizes by product mix and lands close to the same picture: Home & Garden 16.2%, Apparel 12.4%, Computers 7.1%.

Sales Signal: The Russia, Ukraine, Greece, and Turkey concentrations are sourcing opportunities for local-language hosting, payment gateways, and shipping integrations. Western SaaS vendors underindex here; localized partners win the long tail.

4. Migration patterns

OpenCart loses companies in every direction we measure. Out of 9,217 enriched companies, the gain/loss picture is uniformly negative: -334 net to Wix Stores (442 lost vs. 108 gained, a 4:1 loss ratio), -157 to PrestaShop, -142 to Tiendanube, -123 to Ecwid, and -36 to 1C-Bitrix. The one nearly-even corridor is Magento (-38 net), where 307 companies flowed in vs. 345 out, suggesting overlapping audiences where merchants periodically up- and down-shift between the two open-source PHP carts.

An independent view from Store Leads validates the pattern: in the trailing 90 days OpenCart gained 1,076 stores from rivals (424 from WooCommerce, 80 from Shopify) and lost 1,508 stores, a net deficit of 432. High-profile recent departures include Vaultek Safe, New Rock, and Indonesian watchmaker Alexandre Christie, all of which moved to Shopify in early 2026.

"The Wix Stores corridor is the most telling. Independent merchants who once chose a self-hosted PHP cart are now defaulting to a hosted builder. That's not a product comparison, it's a generational shift in how SMBs buy commerce software." - Mehmet Suleyman, CEO at TechnologyChecker.io

Sales Signal: Two-sided opportunity. Migration consultancies and SaaS vendors can target the 442+ companies leaving OpenCart for Wix Stores annually. Hosting and PHP-managed services can target the 307+ companies still actively choosing OpenCart over Magento for cost reasons.

5. Technology ecosystem

The tech stack on OpenCart sites reveals an older cohort than the category average. Facebook Domain Insights (20.4%) dominates analytics, with Hotjar (4.6%), Google Analytics Classic (3.8%), and Microsoft Clarity (3.4%) trailing. Note the heavy presence of Google Analytics Classic, the deprecated Universal Analytics implementation, rather than GA4. Yandex.Metrika (2.4%) and Bing UET (2.8%) appear at unusually high rates, fitting the Eastern European and global SMB profile.

The broader picture from Store Leads is more Google-skewed across the full population: 40.1% Google Tag Manager, 39.3% Google Ads Pixel, 38.3% Google Analytics, and 19.5% Google Analytics 4. The payment stack in our enriched view is fragmented, with Maestro (4.1%) topping Stripe (2.3%), PayPal SDK (1.1%), PayPal Button (0.9%), and Square (0.8%). No dominant rail, reflecting the global mix of locally-preferred payment methods. The JavaScript stack is the most telling: AngularJS, RequireJS, Vue v2, and Prototype dominate, with modern frameworks like Alpine.js (0.2%) and Preact (0.4%) barely present.

Sales Signal: The legacy framework stack is an upsell trigger. GA4 migration services, modern payment rail consolidation (Stripe-only setups), and PHP modernization are all underrepresented in this base and represent open opportunities.

6. G2 and Capterra review signals

OpenCart's review footprint is small but consistent. G2 rates the platform at 4.3 stars across 105 reviews, while Capterra shows 4.6 for ease of use and 4.7 for value for money across 139 reviews. The recurring themes match our crawl data: users praise ease of setup, zero licensing cost, and the extension marketplace; complaints cluster on the admin interface, limited built-in features, and a security culture that has been publicly disputed (The Register documented a 2023 incident where the founder responded harshly to a security researcher's vulnerability disclosure). Our churn data triangulates this: the 442 companies migrating to Wix Stores annually are exactly the SMBs who valued simplicity over self-hosted control.

Sales Signal: The thin G2 footprint is itself signal: OpenCart customers are not active reviewers, which makes outbound the better channel than community-driven discovery.

Key takeaways

  1. Position: #10 in Ecommerce Platforms (0.55% share, 29,460 active domains), the largest open-source PHP cart after PrestaShop.
  2. Growth phase: Mature with recent softening, a 26% drop in our active installs Mar-Jul 2025 and -12% YoY in the broader Store Leads crawl.
  3. Core archetype: Independent micro-merchants (1-10 employees), founded 2000-2019, concentrated in Eastern Europe, Brazil, Turkey, and India.

Sales applications

Three practical plays for sales teams using TechnologyChecker.io's list of companies using OpenCart:

Outreach template (managed hosting, payment, or migration services):
"Hi {First Name}, I saw {Company} is running OpenCart on {domain}. Your store is in the 77% of OpenCart merchants under 10 employees, typically the segment that wins back the most engineering time when we move to managed PHP or a hosted cart. Worth a 15-minute look at what your stack would save?"

Targeting strategy: Filter by industry (Retail or Manufacturing), country (Russia, Ukraine, Brazil, UK, US, or Turkey), and employee size (1-50). This isolates the ICP and removes the departmental microsite noise from Fortune 500 detections.

Competitive angle: The 442+ companies migrating to Wix Stores and the 358+ to PrestaShop annually are actively open to alternatives. Reach them before they finish their RFP.

Which is better, OpenCart or WooCommerce?

Our data shows OpenCart skews to micro-merchants (77% with 1-10 employees), while WooCommerce sees broader usage including mid-market and content-led stores.

The platform's security communication has also been publicly criticized (The Register, 2023).

Is OpenCart similar to WordPress?

Not exactly. WordPress is a content management system that needs a plugin like WooCommerce to handle ecommerce, while OpenCart is purpose-built as a shopping cart.
