Every number on this page rests on one signal: the AWSALB cookie. An Application Load Balancer writes it to pin a visitor to a single target, and it does that only when target-group stickiness has been turned on. Stickiness ships off. So this page counts ALBs that were configured for session affinity, which is a subset of ALBs, which is why I describe 69,748 as a floor and not a total.
Ordinarily a caveat like that is where the analysis stops. Here it is where it gets interesting, because the bias is legible in the data rather than hypothetical. If our detections were a random sample of ALBs, they would land on hostnames in roughly the proportion the web uses them. They do not. 15.0% of ALB detections sit on a hostname that is neither the apex nor www. Across the same crawl, Nginx — a general-purpose web server with no such configuration gate — reads 3.5%. Azure Front Door, a managed edge service with a similar deployment story, reads 14.9%, which tells me the pattern belongs to the class of product rather than to AWS.

Two in five put someone else's edge in front of AWS
The co-occurrence figure I did not expect is Cloudflare at 38.75%, effectively level with Amazon Web Services' own 39.99% and well ahead of Amazon CloudFront at 24.0%. On roughly two in five of these domains the request meets Cloudflare first and an AWS balancer second. That is not indecision; the edge and the balancer do different jobs, and buying the edge separately from the compute is a deliberate and increasingly common posture.
The one corridor worth trusting
We measured switching between ALB and every other balancer in the category. Only one pairing survived. 927 domains left Amazon ELB for an ALB against 131 in reverse, and only 1.6% of those 927 still answer from the older balancer on any hostname — they replaced it rather than running both.
What convinced me was the asymmetry rather than the size. Envoy showed 63 domains moving to ALB and 73 moving away; Google Cloud Load Balancing showed 10 and 9. Balanced flows in both directions are the signature of measurement drift, because a recrawl that loses sight of one technology on a domain is equally likely to lose the other. A genuine migration only runs one way, and AWS retiring the Classic balancer supplies the reason this one does.
