Companies Using Application Request Routing

Our October 2026 crawl finds 2,670 domains that answer with X-Powered-By: ARR/3.0 or ARR/2.5. That header comes from Application Request Routing, Microsoft's free reverse-proxy and load-balancing module for IIS, which adds it by default to every response it forwards. Below is the list of companies that use Application Request Routing, with size, country, industry and stack. Since a server owner can switch the header off, this is a floor on ARR installs.

A handful of operators send a large part of it. When we re-requested every clean hostname on 16 October 2026, 420 of 2,724 (15.42%) belonged to SCHOOLinSITES, a K-12 school website platform; 226 of them point at a hostname called arr-connect6.schoolinsites.com. One operator's network of "Airtaxi" city sites adds 200 (7.34%), the Swedish IT firm Aderian CoreIT 124 and the platform behind Italy's BCC cooperative banks 114. Outside them sit organisations running ARR on their own servers, among them Samsung's design site, ING's German securities pages and Purolator's freight portal.

ARR ranks 7th of 12 rows in Load Balancers & Proxies with 0.77%. Every row reads a response header, so the table compares which proxies announce themselves.

Application Request Routing Usage Statistics

Application Request Routing reads 1,727 domains in June 2026, 2,128 in July, 2,361 in August, 2,588 in September and 2,670 in October. That is not a burst of new installs. The set of domains we crawl turns over every month, with dead sites dropping out and newly found ones added, and our detection signals widen over time, so the line is not a same-domain series. Since we began tracking ARR on 16 March 2026, 384 domains dropped the header on at least one hostname, and 33 of those still send it from another.

List of Companies Using Application Request Routing

Who uses Application Request Routing? This list of companies that use Application Request Routing names 46 of the 1,622 matched companies, ranked by LinkedIn following. We requested each detection URL on 16 October 2026 and 34 still sent the ARR header. Most run it on one subdomain: Samsung on design.samsung.com, Purolator on its freight site, ING on its German securities pages. Six universities appear because their D2L Brightspace learning sites send it. The typical ARR website is a school, bank or small firm on a shared platform.

Application Request Routing Customers by Company Size & Age

What size companies use Application Request Routing? A broader spread than on the Apache APISIX page, where 68.11% have 1 to 10 staff. Here 40.04% of matched companies with a known size have 1 to 10 employees, 26.67% have 11 to 50 and 16.98% have 51 to 200. 66 have more than 1,000 staff. Windows shops of every size run IIS, and ARR shows up where one of them, or its school, bank or hosting platform, put a proxy in front.

Company Size Distribution

Company Age (Founded Decade)

Old. 18.12% of matched companies with a founding year predate 1960, and with the 1960s to the 1990s (32.93%) added, 51.05% predate 2000, against 9.9% on the Apache APISIX page. The 2010s lead at 21.79%, ahead of the 2000s (19.09%), and only 8.08% started in the 2020s. School districts, municipalities and cooperative banks explain the old end: 38 of the 148 pre-1960 companies are BCC banks.

What Industries Use Application Request Routing the Most?

IT Services and IT Consulting leads at 5.55%, then Banking (4.97%), Education Administration Programs (4.24%), Real Estate (4.16%) and Software Development (4.09%), based on our enriched company data. Two of those rows are platforms more than industries. Banking is the BCC group, 65 of its 68 companies, and education administration is mostly SCHOOLinSITES districts.

Banking68 (4.97%)
Education Administration Programs58 (4.24%)
Real Estate57 (4.16%)
Software Development56 (4.09%)

School districts using Application Request Routing mostly do it through SCHOOLinSITES: 88 of the matched education-administration and K-12 companies sit on its platform. Banks on ARR are Italy's BCC cooperatives, whose shared platform still sends ARR/2.5. Accounting firms using ARR are Belgian practices on Billit's client portals, 35 of the 43 in that row; Billit's own portal, my.billit.be, sends the header.

Application Request Routing Alternatives & Competitors

ARR's rivals in this table are other headers, and most of them are a different kind of product. Envoy and Apache APISIX are open-source proxies counted from their Server banners; Amazon ALB and Azure Front Door are cloud load balancers. Few domains carry two: 21 run an ARR host and an Azure Front Door host today, 14 Envoy and 12 Amazon ALB. The two groups we saw drop ARR in bulk changed platform rather than adding one of these rows.

Expert Analysis: Application Request Routing Growth Trends & Key Signals for Sales Teams in 2026

David Thomson
David ThomsonCTO, TechnologyChecker

I run the crawler that stores the response headers of every domain we visit, and Application Request Routing is a row that announces itself by default, version number included. A domain counts when a response carries X-Powered-By: ARR/ followed by a version. Our October 2026 crawl puts that at 2,670 domains, 7th of 12 rows, with 1,622 matched to a company. On 16 October 2026 I re-requested every hostname in the clean list, 2,724 of them, and resolved each one's address and CNAME chain to see who runs the proxy.

What the header means

ARR is a module for Microsoft's IIS web server. The IIS.net product page describes rule-based routing, client and host name affinity, load balancing and disk caching, for IIS 7 through IIS 10. Microsoft's download centre still lists ARR 3.0 as version 3.0.5311, free, on a page dated 15 July 2024. The header is on unless someone turns it off: a 2013 post on Microsoft's IIS.net blogs shows the arrResponseHeader setting that removes it. So 2,670 is a floor. The version token is the installed release, and on 16 October 2,206 hostnames reported ARR/3.0 and 130 ARR/2.5.

Sales signal: every domain here has a Windows server with IIS somewhere in its path, and an administrator who left a default setting alone.

Who puts it there

Four operators account for 858 of the 2,724 hostnames. SCHOOLinSITES, a K-12 school website platform, has 420 (15.42%); 226 of them resolve through a hostname literally named arr-connect6.schoolinsites.com, on a Microsoft-network address. One operator's network of near-identical "Airtaxi" city sites adds 200 (7.34%), all behind Cloudflare. Aderian CoreIT, a Swedish IT firm, hosts 124 (4.55%) on a web cluster whose servers say coreit. The platform behind Italy's BCC cooperative banks serves 114 (4.19%) through Imperva, and still on ARR/2.5. Smaller groups follow: Billit's Belgian accounting portals (53), Slovenian municipal sites (51), the UK host Razorblue (49), Microsoft's own Sway (35) and D2L Brightspace course sites (26).

"A school district in Georgia and a cooperative bank in Puglia send the same ARR header for the same reason: their platform's Windows server put it there." - David Thomson, CTO at TechnologyChecker.io

One thing I checked because readers ask: Azure App Service is not the source. Only 5 of the 2,724 hostnames pointed at azurewebsites.net.

Sales signal: for about a third of this list, the buyer of anything server-side is a platform (SCHOOLinSITES, CoreIT, the BCC group's provider), not the school or bank whose name is on the site.

How much of it is current

2,336 of the 2,724 hostnames (85.76%) still sent the header on 16 October 2026, and a separate random draw of 50 gave 41. 103 didn't answer. Two groups have mostly moved off: Brazilian store checkouts on Fbits, where 3 of 65 still send it, and Intermountain Health's sites, where none of 55 do. Error pages are rare, 16 server errors and 30 titled like dead pages. The monthly total went from 1,727 in June to 2,670 in October. Part of that is our side: the set of domains we crawl turns over every month, dead sites out and newly found ones in, and our detection widens. Since tracking began on 16 March 2026, 384 domains dropped the header on at least one hostname, and 33 still send it from another.

Sales signal: an 86% live rate makes this a usable list, but filter out the Fbits and Intermountain rows before you use it.

Who and where

This base is far older than Apache APISIX's. 18.12% of matched companies with a founding year predate 1960, and 51.05% predate 2000, against 9.9% on the APISIX page. Sizes spread out: 40.04% have 1 to 10 employees, 26.67% have 11 to 50 and 16.98% have 51 to 200. The United States has 474 matched companies, 227 of them SCHOOLinSITES schools. Italy has 135, 100 of them BCC banks; Sweden 109, 87 on CoreIT; Brazil 104, 58 of them Fbits checkouts. IT services (5.55%) and banking (4.97%) lead the industries.

Sales signal: school districts, municipalities and cooperative banks buy through procurement and through their platform. Reach them through the platform, or with the public-sector paperwork ready.

The self-run side

Take out the platforms and about half the hostnames remain: Windows shops running ARR on their own servers, usually on one subdomain. That's where the names come from. Samsung's design site, ING's German securities pages, Purolator's freight portal, Persimmon's housebuilding site, Dometic's business site, Milestone Systems, the City of Edmonton's GIS portal, Land Oberösterreich's site and Türk Tuborg's supplier portal all sent the header on 16 October. Six universities on our list, McGill among them, appear only because their D2L Brightspace course sites send it.

Sales signal: a company proxying one subdomain through IIS has a Windows team that owns the box. That team is the buyer for migration, monitoring and managed hosting, and the subdomain tells you which application to talk about.

Overlap and movement

We publish no switching rows for ARR, because none passed our gates. Overlap is thin: 21 domains run an ARR host and an Azure Front Door host today (27 ever), 14 Envoy and 12 Amazon ALB. An answer from Microsoft's external support staff on Microsoft Q&A in July 2023 said ARR may be considered a legacy product, without official confirmation, and named HAProxy and NGINX as options. Our data doesn't show an exit yet.

"ARR isn't being replaced by another row in this table. Where we saw it go, the whole platform changed with it." - David Thomson, CTO at TechnologyChecker.io

Sales signal: pitch the rebuild. Few teams shop for a new reverse proxy while the old IIS box still works.

The stack around it

Across the 2,748 clean domains, IIS shows its own banner on 36.97% and ASP.NET on 12.01%, and SCHOOLinSITES is 420 of the IIS domains. Elsewhere ARR fronts other servers: WordPress runs on 17.94% (124 of those domains on CoreIT's hosting), Next.js on 7.79%, Nginx on 6.8% and Apache on 6.59%. Kestrel, the ASP.NET Core server, shows on 1.56%. Cloudflare sits in front of 29.26%, and jQuery CDN (19.83%) and cdnjs (20.49%) are the common script hosts. DNN (1.97%) and Sitecore (1.49%) are the Windows-native CMSs.

Sales signal: a Windows proxy in front of WordPress or Next.js is a mixed estate with two teams. That's the opening for consolidation and hosting offers.

Key takeaways

  • 2,670 domains, 0.77% of Load Balancers & Proxies, 7th of 12, and a floor because the header can be switched off.
  • SCHOOLinSITES (15.42%), an Airtaxi site network (7.34%), Aderian CoreIT (4.55%) and the BCC banks' platform (4.19%) send almost a third of it.
  • 85.76% still sent the header on 16 October 2026; 2,206 report ARR/3.0.
  • 51.05% of matched companies predate 2000: schools, councils and banks.
  • No switching rows; the bulk exits we saw were platform changes.

Sales applications

Outreach template: "Your [subdomain] still answers through IIS Application Request Routing 3.0. If that box is on your list to retire, here's how teams like yours move it in a quarter." Use it on the self-run half.

Targeting strategy: drop the SCHOOLinSITES, Airtaxi, CoreIT and BCC rows, then filter for companies with 51 or more staff. That leaves Windows teams with budget.

Competitive angle: you're competing with the rebuild budget, and Envoy or Front Door enter only when that project starts. For the platform rows, talk to the platform.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who uses Application Request Routing?

On our data, schools, banks and small firms on a few shared platforms, plus Windows shops running their own IIS. On 16 October 2026, 420 of 2,724 re-requested hostnames belonged to SCHOOLinSITES, a school website platform, and 114 to Italy's BCC banks. Samsung, ING, Purolator and Persimmon sent the header on their own sites that day.

How many customers does Application Request Routing have?

We count 2,670 domains sending an ARR header in October 2026. ARR is a free Microsoft module, so these are sites, not paying customers, and servers that switch the header off aren't counted. 1,622 domains match a company. On 16 October 2026, 2,336 of 2,724 re-requested hostnames (85.76%) still sent it, and 41 of a random 50 did.

What is Application Request Routing's market share?

Application Request Routing holds 0.77% of Load Balancers & Proxies at TechnologyChecker.io, 7th of 12 rows. Envoy leads, then Amazon ALB at 22.55%, Google Cloud Load Balancing at 17.29% and Azure Front Door at 15.36%, with Apache APISIX 6th at 1.79%. Every row reads a response header, so the share measures which proxies announce themselves. ARR's header is on by default, which helps it show up.

What are the best alternatives to Application Request Routing?

In our category, the other rows include Envoy, Amazon ALB with 77,852 domains, Azure Front Door with 53,009 and Apache APISIX with 6,183. A July 2023 answer on Microsoft Q&A pointed ARR users to HAProxy or NGINX. For a site already on Azure, Front Door is the managed option, and 21 domains run both today.

Which countries use Application Request Routing the most?

The United States, with 474 of the 1,622 matched companies, then Italy (135), the United Kingdom (128), Sweden (109) and Brazil (104). Each top country has a platform behind it: SCHOOLinSITES schools in the US, BCC banks in Italy, Aderian CoreIT's hosting in Sweden and Fbits store checkouts in Brazil, which have mostly stopped sending the header.

What size companies use Application Request Routing?

All sizes, with a small-business lean. 40.04% of matched companies with a known size have 1 to 10 employees, 26.67% have 11 to 50 and 16.98% have 51 to 200, while 66 have more than 1,000 staff. Large firms usually run ARR on one subdomain, such as Samsung's design site or Purolator's freight portal.

How old are companies that use Application Request Routing?

Old by web standards. 18.12% of matched companies with a founding year predate 1960 and 51.05% predate 2000, against 9.9% for Apache APISIX, while only 8.08% were founded in the 2020s. School districts, municipalities and Italy's cooperative banks account for much of that: 38 of the 148 pre-1960 companies are BCC banks on one shared platform.

What is the ideal customer profile for Application Request Routing?

On our data, an organisation with 1 to 50 staff, often founded before 2000, in the US, Italy, the UK or Sweden, running Windows and IIS (36.97% of domains) with ASP.NET. Many are schools on SCHOOLinSITES or banks on the BCC platform. A smaller profile is Windows teams at large firms proxying one subdomain.

Is IIS ARR end of life?

Microsoft hasn't announced an end date on the pages we read. In a July 2023 Microsoft Q&A answer, Microsoft's external support staff said ARR may be considered a legacy product but that, without official confirmation, they couldn't say it was abandoned. The ARR 3.0 download is still on microsoft.com, and 2,336 hostnames still sent its header on 16 October 2026.

Does anyone still use IIS?

Yes, and ARR's header is one way to see it. In our October 2026 crawl, 2,670 domains sent X-Powered-By: ARR, and IIS showed its own banner on 36.97% of ARR's 2,748 clean domains. The users are schools, municipalities, banks and Windows shops: SCHOOLinSITES alone accounted for 420 of the 2,724 hostnames we re-requested.

How can I download the Microsoft Application Request Routing 3.0 release?

From Microsoft's download centre, where Application Request Routing 3.0 for x64 is listed as version 3.0.5311, a 2.4 MB installer, on a page dated 15 July 2024. It's free. The IIS.net product page lists support for IIS 7 through IIS 10. On our data, 2,206 hostnames ran version 3.0 on 16 October 2026.

How do I remove X-Powered-By: ARR/3.0?

Turn off ARR's response header. A 2013 post on Microsoft's IIS.net blogs shows the arrResponseHeader setting, set to False with appcmd.exe, for both reverse-proxy and web-farm setups. That's also why our 2,670-domain count is a floor: any server that made the change disappears from it, while still running ARR behind the scenes.

Does Azure App Service add X-Powered-By: ARR?

Not on our data. When we resolved every ARR hostname on 16 October 2026, only 5 of 2,724 pointed at azurewebsites.net, Azure App Service's domain. The big clusters are elsewhere: SCHOOLinSITES (420, 226 of them through one Microsoft-network address), an Airtaxi site network behind Cloudflare (200), Aderian CoreIT in Sweden (124) and the BCC banks' platform (114).

What is replacing IIS ARR?

On our data, mostly nothing visible yet. We publish no switching rows for ARR, and few domains run a second proxy: 21 also run Azure Front Door today, 14 Envoy and 12 Amazon ALB. The two groups we saw drop it in bulk were platform changes: Fbits store checkouts (3 of 65 still send it) and Intermountain Health's sites (none of 55).

What is the difference between ARR/3.0 and ARR/2.5?

The header's version is the installed ARR release. Of the 2,336 hostnames that sent it on 16 October 2026, 2,206 reported ARR/3.0 and 130 the older ARR/2.5. 111 of those 130 sit on the platform behind Italy's BCC cooperative banks, so ARR/2.5 is mostly one bank group's estate on a single shared platform.
