Companies Using Kestrel
Kestrel is the web server built into ASP.NET Core, and Microsoft's documentation calls it the recommended server for ASP.NET Core apps. Our October 2026 crawl finds 26,519 domains whose Server header names it, 9th of the 70 servers we track in Web Servers, with 0.18%. Below is the list of companies that use Kestrel, with size, country, industry and stack. It includes S&P Global's Marketplace, Air Products' customer login and the University of Washington's continuing-education site.
Two groups shape the numbers. 39 of the 50 companies in our top list run Kestrel on a careers site built on Radancy's recruitment platform, where the vendor chose the server. And 1,930 of the 26,735 live domains we checked (7.22%) are near-identical "cash for cars" lead sites built from one template. Azure is the most common cloud we can see, on 17.29% of Kestrel domains.

Kestrel Usage Statistics
Our crawl reads 11,889 Kestrel domains in June 2026, 22,467 in July, 24,494 in August, 25,827 in September and 26,519 in October. The July jump of 10,578 nearly doubled the count, and it wasn't a rush to ASP.NET Core. The set of domains we crawl turns over every month, with dead sites dropping out and newly found ones added, and our detection signals widen over time, so that step reflects changes on our side rather than a surge in adoption. Since then the monthly gain has shrunk to 692. Since we began tracking Kestrel in March 2026, 2,366 domains have dropped it on a hostname, and about one in ten of those still shows it on another.

Which Countries Use Kestrel the Most?
Which countries use Kestrel the most? The United States, with 3,844 matched companies, then the United Kingdom (1,028), Brazil (557), the Netherlands (400), Canada (332) and Germany (314). The list differs from IIS's. On our IIS profile India and Italy are 2nd and 3rd; here they're 9th (228) and 10th (214), while Denmark, Sweden and Norway add 540 between them. Newer .NET work isn't sitting where the older Windows estates are. These counts cover the 10,989 Kestrel domains we matched to a company.
Share of the 10,989 Kestrel domains we matched to a company record — 41.4% of the 26,519 we detect. Top 15 countries shown, so these do not sum to 100%. Domains with no matching company record are not represented here and skew small and independent.
Kestrel Market Share Among Web Servers
What is Kestrel's market share? 0.18% of Web Servers, 9th of the 70 we track, based on our live crawl at TechnologyChecker.io. Phusion Passenger, one place below, has 26,065 domains, and IIS, Microsoft's older server, counts 434,800, about 16 times as many. The share understates ASP.NET Core. An app hosted in-process on IIS answers as IIS, a Kestrel app behind Nginx or a CDN shows that layer's name, and Kestrel's own header can be switched off with one setting.
Top Competitors by Market Share
Kestrel Customers by Company Size & Age
What size companies use Kestrel? Small ones lead, though less than on Apache. 48.59% of matched companies with a known size have 1 to 10 employees and 25.1% have 11 to 50. 4.84% have more than 1,000, against 0.94% on Apache's profile, and many of those run Kestrel only on a careers site that Radancy built for them, such as Unilever, Ford and Mayo Clinic.
Company Size Distribution
Company Age (Founded Decade)
The largest group of matched companies was founded in the 2010s (31.29%), then the 2000s (17.07%) and the 2020s (15.55%). 36.09% were founded before 2000, 9.67% of them before 1960, against 26.4% before 2000 on Apache's profile. Old firms, recent apps: established companies run Kestrel for software they built in the last decade.
What Industries Use Kestrel the Most?
Software Development leads at 7.77%, then Retail (6.4%) and IT Services and IT Consulting (6.09%), based on our enriched company data. Motor Vehicle Manufacturing is fourth at 4.44%, an odd place for a web server. Half of those 427 companies, 214, are car dealers or cash-for-cars sites whose LinkedIn pages carry the manufacturing label, not carmakers.
Healthcare organisations using Kestrel on our list do it on careers sites: Mayo Clinic, Northwestern Medicine, Cedars-Sinai and Ochsner all run Radancy-built job sites on it. Financial companies on Kestrel include S&P Global, whose Marketplace answers with it, and BlackRock on its careers site. Universities using Kestrel include the University of Washington, on its Professional & Continuing Education site.
Kestrel Alternatives & Competitors
Kestrel's table lists the servers it sits behind or beside. IIS (3.01%) is Microsoft's older server and can host ASP.NET Core itself or proxy to Kestrel; Nginx (35.33%) and Apache HTTP Server (37.16%) are the usual reverse proxies on Linux; Phusion Passenger (0.18%) is the nearest in size in this table. The overlaps are mixed setups, not migrations: 1,248 domains show Kestrel and Nginx today, 946 Kestrel and Apache and 805 Kestrel and IIS. None passed our switching tests, because most domains ever seen with both still run both.

Percentages here are of the 26,721 live Kestrel domains left after we removed for-sale and gambling pages. Microsoft ASP.NET shows on 19.91% and Blazor on 8.64%. Our ASP.NET rule looks for cookies, headers and Web Forms markup that many ASP.NET Core apps never send, so the Kestrel header is the stronger .NET signal. Azure is on 17.29% and Amazon Web Services on 6.83%. Umbraco, the .NET CMS, runs on 2.69%, and Google Analytics on 45.36%.

Expert Analysis: Kestrel Growth Trends & Key Signals for Sales Teams in 2026

Most of the servers I profile are infrastructure someone chose years ago. Kestrel is different: it ships inside ASP.NET Core, so a Kestrel header tells you a .NET team built the application that answered. A domain counts here when its Server header begins with Kestrel. As of our October 2026 crawl that's 26,519 domains, 9th of the 70 web servers we track, and 10,989 of them match a company. Two cohorts distort that count, and I'd rather name them before anything else.
A template network and a recruitment platform
The first is a network of "cash for cars" lead sites. 1,930 of the 26,735 live Kestrel domains we checked (7.22%) carry titles such as "Plano Car Buyer" or "Spokane Cash for Cars", and the eight I loaded share one build: the same Bootstrap 3 layout, a bundle served from a random six-character folder, a local phone number. Only 71 of them match a company, so they swell the domain count but barely touch the charts. A second automotive group, 975 dealer sites, most of them on one platform's build, adds 3.65%. The second distortion is in the company list. 39 of our top 50 are careers sites built on Radancy's recruitment platform, which loads its assets from tbcdn.talentbrew.com, yet Radancy's script turns up on only 212 Kestrel domains in all.
Sales signal: strip the cash-for-cars titles before you count accounts, and treat a careers-subdomain hit as Radancy's decision, not the employer's.
Growth trajectory
The chart reads 11,889 in June 2026, then 22,467, 24,494, 25,827 and 26,519 in October. The July jump of 10,578 is not a wave of new .NET apps. The domain set we crawl turns over every month, with dead sites dropping out and new ones added, and our detection signals widen over time; both moved that month. Since then the monthly gain has shrunk from 2,027 to 692. Since March 2026, 2,366 domains have dropped Kestrel on a hostname, and about one in ten of those still shows it on another.
"Most server headers tell you who runs the machine. A Kestrel header tells you a .NET team wrote the application." - David Thomson, CTO at TechnologyChecker.io
Sales signal: this is a small, steady pool of about 26,500 domains, not a fast-growing one. Its value is precision: every row is an ASP.NET Core application.
Who runs Kestrel
48.59% of matched companies have 1 to 10 employees, below the 69.2% on Apache's profile, and 4.84% have more than 1,000 staff, about five times Apache's 0.94%. The enterprise end is mostly Radancy careers sites (Unilever, Ford, Mayo Clinic, British Airways). The exceptions are more telling. S&P Global runs its data Marketplace on Kestrel, Air Products its customer login, the University of Washington its continuing-education site and Young Living its main site. The companies are older than the server: 36.09% were founded before 2000.
Sales signal: outside the careers sites, a Kestrel subdomain at a large company is usually a customer-facing application with an engineering team behind it. That team buys developer tooling and cloud capacity.
Countries and industries
The United States leads with 3,844 matched companies, then the United Kingdom (1,028), Brazil (557) and the Netherlands (400). The comparison with IIS is the useful part. On our IIS profile India and Italy are 2nd and 3rd; here they're 9th (228) and 10th (214), while Denmark, Sweden and Norway add 540. Software Development leads industries at 7.77%. Motor Vehicle Manufacturing is fourth at 4.44%, but 214 of its 427 companies are car dealers or cash-for-cars sites under a manufacturing label.
Sales signal: for .NET tooling, the Netherlands and the Nordics are worth more here than their size suggests. Skip the automotive rows unless you sell to dealers.
Mixed setups, not migrations
We test every server pair for switching, and none of Kestrel's passed. The header is per hostname, and Kestrel often has a partner: 1,248 domains show Kestrel and Nginx today, 946 Kestrel and Apache, 805 Kestrel and IIS and 215 Kestrel and Phusion Passenger. Most domains ever seen with both still run both. Microsoft Learn explains the IIS case: hosted in-process, an ASP.NET Core app answers through IIS's own server, and only out of process does IIS hand requests to Kestrel. So an app can move between IIS and Kestrel headers without moving anywhere.
"A header that flips from IIS to Kestrel usually means someone changed a hosting setting, not a vendor. Count the application, not the header." - David Thomson, CTO at TechnologyChecker.io
Sales signal: the 805 domains on both Kestrel and IIS look like Windows shops part-way through modernising. That's a better hosting or .NET consulting list than either server's alone.
The stack: Azure and .NET
Of the 26,721 live Kestrel domains left after we removed for-sale and gambling pages, 17.29% carry Azure markers (App Service cookies and headers or Azure DNS), and with Azure's CDN and Front Door the family reaches 5,022 of 26,735 live domains. Amazon Web Services is on 6.83%. Our ASP.NET rule fires on only 19.91%, because it looks for cookies and Web Forms markup that many ASP.NET Core apps never send, and Blazor shows on 8.64%. Umbraco, the .NET CMS, is on 2.69%, and Google Analytics on 45.36%. 122 domains still show Azure's default "up and running" or welcome page.
Sales signal: about one Kestrel domain in six is visibly on Azure. Azure partners, .NET consultancies and Blazor component vendors have the clearest fit.
The .NET support deadline
Microsoft's .NET support policy lists .NET 8 and .NET 9 as ending support on 10 November 2026, a month after this crawl, and .NET 6 as out of support since 12 November 2024. Kestrel's header carries no version, so we can't say which release any domain runs. Unless a domain already runs .NET 10, its release is out of support or about to be.
Sales signal: open with the date. An upgrade conversation with a .NET team in November 2026 doesn't need a pitch.
Key takeaways
1. 26,519 domains, 9th of 70 web servers, each one an ASP.NET Core application.
2. 1,930 of the live domains we checked (7.22%) are one cash-for-cars template network.
3. 39 of the top 50 companies are Radancy-built careers sites.
4. 4.84% of matched companies have more than 1,000 staff; Apache's profile shows 0.94%.

Frequently Asked Questions
Who uses Kestrel?
Teams that build on ASP.NET Core, from small software firms to large employers. Our October 2026 crawl finds Kestrel on 26,519 domains; 73.69% of matched companies have 50 or fewer staff and 4.84% more than 1,000. Named examples include S&P Global's Marketplace, Air Products' customer login, and Radancy-built careers sites for Unilever, Ford and Mayo Clinic.
How many customers does Kestrel have?
Kestrel has no customers in the usual sense: it's the free web server inside ASP.NET Core. Our October 2026 crawl counts 26,519 domains whose Server header names it, and 10,989 of them match a company. 1,930 of the live domains we checked belong to one template network of cash-for-cars sites. Since March 2026, 2,366 domains have dropped Kestrel on a hostname.
What is Kestrel's market share?
0.18% of the Web Servers category, 9th of the 70 servers we track, on 26,519 domains. Apache HTTP Server (37.16%) and Nginx (35.33%) lead, IIS has 3.01%, and Phusion Passenger, one place below Kestrel, has 0.18%. The share is a floor for ASP.NET Core, because apps hosted in-process on IIS, or behind Nginx or a CDN, show another server's name.
What are the best alternatives to Kestrel?
Within ASP.NET Core the alternatives are hosting choices. Microsoft Learn lists IIS's in-process server, which it recommends when hosting on IIS, and HTTP.sys, a Windows-only server with kernel-mode Windows authentication. Outside .NET, Nginx and Apache HTTP Server usually sit in front of Kestrel as reverse proxies: 1,248 domains show Kestrel and Nginx today, and 946 Kestrel and Apache.
Which countries use Kestrel the most?
The United States, with 3,844 matched companies, then the United Kingdom (1,028), Brazil (557), the Netherlands (400), Canada (332) and Germany (314). India and Italy, 2nd and 3rd on our IIS profile, are only 9th and 10th here, while Denmark, Sweden and Norway add 540 between them. These counts cover the 10,989 Kestrel domains we matched to a company.
What size companies use Kestrel?
Mostly small ones, with a heavier top end than Apache's. 48.59% of matched companies with a known size have 1 to 10 employees and 25.1% have 11 to 50. 4.84% have more than 1,000, about five times Apache's 0.94%. Many of those large companies run Kestrel only on a careers site that Radancy built for them.
How old are companies that use Kestrel?
The largest group was founded in the 2010s (31.29%), then the 2000s (17.07%) and the 2020s (15.55%). 36.09% were founded before 2000 and 9.67% before 1960, an older mix than Apache's profile, where 26.4% predate 2000. Established companies use Kestrel for applications built in the last decade, such as careers sites, portals and customer logins.
What is the ideal customer profile for Kestrel?
The ideal Kestrel customer is: Company Size: 1-10 employees (48.59%), 4.84% over 1,000, Location: US, then UK, Brazil, Netherlands, Founded: 2010s, but 36.09% before 2000, Industry: Software, retail, IT services, car dealers, Site stack: ASP.NET Core app, often on Azure — based on our analysis of 10,989 enriched companies at TechnologyChecker.io.
What is Kestrel and why is it used in ASP.NET Core?
Kestrel is the cross-platform web server built into ASP.NET Core. Microsoft Learn calls it the recommended server for ASP.NET Core and says the project templates configure it by default, which is why it appears wherever .NET teams ship web apps. It supports HTTP/1.1, HTTP/2, HTTP/3 and WebSockets, and runs on Windows or Linux in production.
What is replacing IIS?
For new .NET web apps, Kestrel: Microsoft Learn calls it the recommended server for ASP.NET Core, and it runs on Linux as well as Windows. IIS isn't gone. Our crawl counts 434,800 IIS domains against 26,519 for Kestrel, and 805 domains show both today. Look for both when you size a Microsoft shop.
Can Kestrel be used as a front-facing web server?
Yes. Microsoft Learn says Kestrel can run by itself as an internet-facing edge server or behind a reverse proxy such as IIS, Nginx, Apache or YARP, and both setups are supported. A proxy still helps with shared ports, load balancing and certificates. Every domain on this page answered with Kestrel's own header, so it either faced the internet directly or its proxy passed the header through.
Is Kestrel free?
Yes. Kestrel ships inside ASP.NET Core, which is open source under the MIT licence in the dotnet/aspnetcore repository, so there's no licence fee. The cost is hosting. In our crawl, 17.29% of Kestrel domains carry Azure's App Service cookies, headers or DNS, and 6.83% Amazon Web Services markers, the two largest clouds we can identify on this list.
Kestrel vs IIS: which should you use?
For ASP.NET Core both work. On IIS, Microsoft Learn recommends in-process hosting, where IIS's own server replaces Kestrel; out of process, IIS proxies to Kestrel. Kestrel alone runs on Linux too. In our crawl IIS is far larger, 434,800 domains to 26,519, because it also carries older ASP.NET apps: its profile shows ASP.NET on 83.12% of IIS domains.
Is ASP.NET Core 6 end of life?
Yes. Microsoft's .NET support policy lists .NET 6 as out of support since 12 November 2024, and .NET 8 and .NET 9 both reach end of support on 10 November 2026, a month after our October 2026 crawl. Kestrel's header doesn't reveal the .NET version, so any of the 26,519 Kestrel domains could be running an expiring release.
How can you tell if a site runs Kestrel?
Check the Server response header. Kestrel sends "Server: Kestrel" by default, and our rule matches that prefix. The header disappears if the app sets Kestrel's AddServerHeader option to false, or if IIS, Nginx or a CDN answers in front. Azure App Service often passes it through: 17.29% of Kestrel domains in our crawl also carry Azure markers.
