Companies Using Phusion Passenger
Phusion Passenger is an app server for Ruby, Node.js and Python apps, and in our October 2026 crawl 26,065 domains name it in a response header. That's after we removed 2,884 Chinese lottery sites that send a fixed, copied Passenger header. Passenger usually runs inside Nginx or Apache, so it often shows up in the X-Powered-By header rather than the Server header. The largest single group is SportsEngine: 6,108 domains, 23.43%, the youth-sports platform whose club pages answer through Passenger.
Below is the list of companies that use Phusion Passenger on at least one domain, with size, country and industry. Most of the large names reach it through a software vendor: 21 colleges and universities on PeopleAdmin's hiring portals, luxury hotels on a gift-card platform. Ola, Munich Airport, Jazzercise and the University of Hamburg run it on their own servers. Passenger ranks 10th of the 70 technologies we track in Web Servers, with 0.18%, one place behind Kestrel. How we counted is explained at the end of this page.

Phusion Passenger Usage Statistics
We count 26,065 Passenger domains in October 2026. The chart has a single point because the cleaned series starts this month: before counting, we removed 2,884 lottery sites that send a copied Passenger header. Since we began tracking Passenger in March 2026, 2,477 domains have dropped the header, and 252 of them still show it on another hostname. A header disappears whenever someone switches off X-Powered-By, so drops are a weak signal of anyone leaving Passenger.

Which Countries Use Phusion Passenger the Most?
Which countries use Phusion Passenger the most? The United States, with 5,159 matched companies, then Germany (899), the United Kingdom (633), India (599), and France and Mexico with 484 each. The nine European countries in the top 15 add up to 3,902. Mexico's place is partly explained by EasyBroker, the Mexican real-estate CRM that builds agents' websites: at least 671 Passenger domains load its scripts. These counts cover the 14,325 Passenger domains we matched to a company.
Share of the 14,325 Phusion Passenger domains we matched to a company record — 55.0% of the 26,065 we detect. Top 15 countries shown, so these do not sum to 100%. Domains with no matching company record are not represented here and skew small and independent.
Phusion Passenger Market Share Among Web Servers
What is Phusion Passenger's market share? 0.18% of Web Servers, 10th of the 70 technologies we track there, based on our crawl at TechnologyChecker.io. Apache (5,365,858 domains, 37.16%) and Nginx (5,101,407, 35.33%) hold most of the category, and Caddy has 68,037. The rank is close: Kestrel is 9th with 26,519, 454 domains ahead, and Tengine is 12th with 16,071. Passenger also sits behind Nginx or Apache on most of its domains, so its share and theirs overlap.
Top Competitors by Market Share
Phusion Passenger Customers by Company Size & Age
What size companies use Phusion Passenger? Very small ones, mostly. 62.98% of matched companies with a known size have 1 to 10 employees and 22.84% have 11 to 50, so 85.82% have 50 or fewer. Youth-sports clubs on SportsEngine are part of that. 213 companies have more than 1,000 staff, and in our list of 50 most of them show Passenger on a subdomain a software vendor runs for them, such as a hiring portal or a gift-card shop.
Company Size Distribution
Company Age (Founded Decade)
The largest group of matched companies was founded in the 2010s (37.37%), then the 2000s (19.26%) and the 2020s (16.45%). At the old end, 6.11% were founded before 1960, 406 companies, which fits a list with many universities, hospitals and sports federations. The University of Kentucky (1865) and Munich Airport (1949) are two of them.
What Industries Use Phusion Passenger the Most?
Spectator Sports leads at 13.08%, 1,591 companies, which matches SportsEngine's footprint of clubs and leagues, based on our enriched company data. Real Estate is second at 5.38%, partly EasyBroker's agency sites. After that the list flattens: IT Services (4.54%), Software Development (4.13%), Retail (3.75%) and Hospitality (2.11%). The top ten add up to 41.99%, so outside those two platforms Passenger is a horizontal tool.
Universities using Phusion Passenger mostly do it through PeopleAdmin, PowerSchool's hiring software, whose portals such as ukjobs.uky.edu answer as Apache with Passenger 6.0.15. Hotel groups on Passenger include Mandarin Oriental, Aman, Raffles and Soho House, whose gift-card shops run on the Techsembly platform. Health systems using Passenger include Inspira Health and Rogers Behavioral Health, on patient-portal logins hosted on HealtheIntent.
Phusion Passenger Alternatives & Competitors
Passenger rarely replaces the servers in this table; it runs inside them. Today 10,430 domains show both Passenger and Nginx, out of 12,002 ever seen with both since March, and 5,177 show Passenger and Apache, out of 5,988. Caddy's pair is 155 of 203. Those are integration modes, since Passenger installs as an Nginx or Apache module, so we didn't publish any of them as switching.

Tech Stack of Phusion Passenger-Powered Websites
Percentages are of the 26,064 domains in our clean live Passenger set. Ruby on Rails is on 54.07%, though that figure is partly circular: our Rails rule also fires on a mod_rails or mod_rack header, which some Passenger builds send themselves, such as the 3.0.11 build on the University of Ferrara's directory. SportsEngine's builder (SportNgin) is on 23.43%, with comScore (23.94%) riding along on its pages. Node.js frameworks are common too: Next.js is on 13.13% and Express 4.84%. GoDaddy runs the DNS or email for 19.9%.

How We Counted Phusion Passenger Domains
A domain counts here when the Server or X-Powered-By header in our crawler's response names Phusion Passenger. Our crawl found 29,018 such domains. We removed 554 whose latest page title marked them as for-sale, parked or gambling pages, and 2,884 sites from one Chinese lottery network, which leaves the 26,065 every chart on this page uses.
The lottery network. These domains share one fingerprint: OpenResty in front and files from Alibaba Cloud's object storage, both detected on every domain we removed. The ones we requested on 13 October 2026 answered from OpenResty 1.21.4 (most as openresty/1.21.4.1) and all sent the same header, X-Powered-By: Phusion Passenger (mod_rails/mod_rack) 5.1.5. The pages are a lottery app template with invitation-code sign-ups, on numeric domains such as 9822853.com. Our title filter catches gambling pages by their titles, and 2,215 of these have no title at all; the rest carry lottery brand names such as 909游戏 and 开元国际. Because the header mentions mod_rails, the network also tripped our Ruby on Rails rule, so removing it lowered the Rails figure in the stack as well.
Platforms that answer for their customers. SportsEngine's club sites are 6,108 domains, 23.43% of the clean set, identified by SportsEngine's own scripts. They're real Passenger responses and they stay in, but SportsEngine chose the server, not the clubs. In our company list, 36 of 50 rows are subdomains that software vendors such as PeopleAdmin run for the company.
Header position. Passenger usually runs inside Nginx or Apache. Of 60 random domains we requested on 13 October, 9 belonged to the lottery network. Of the other 51, 8 named Passenger in the Server header, 39 only in X-Powered-By, and 4 showed no marker. A site that switches X-Powered-By off disappears from this count.
Expert Analysis: Phusion Passenger Growth Trends & Key Signals for Sales Teams in 2026

Phusion Passenger is the app server I'd least expect to find on a sports club's website, and yet that's where nearly a quarter of it is. A domain counts here when the Server or X-Powered-By header in our crawler's response names Passenger. In our October 2026 crawl that's 26,065 domains after cleaning, 14,325 matched to a company, 10th of 70 in Web Servers with 0.18%. On 13 October I requested a random sample of 60 by hand, plus all 50 rows of our company list, because a header tells you whose software built the response, not whose website it is.
What we took out, and why the chart is short
9 of my 60 sampled domains answered from OpenResty 1.21.4 with the same line, X-Powered-By: Phusion Passenger (mod_rails/mod_rack) 5.1.5. They're Chinese lottery sites on numeric domains, mostly without page titles, which is how they slipped past our title filter. We removed 2,884 of them, every domain showing both OpenResty and Alibaba Cloud's object storage. The chart has one point because the cleaned series starts in October. Since March 2026, 2,477 domains have dropped the header and 252 of those still show it on another hostname.
"Passenger hides behind Nginx or Apache on most sites. Of the 51 genuine sites in my sample, only eight put its name in the Server header. You find it in X-Powered-By, or you don't find it." - David Thomson, CTO at TechnologyChecker.io
Sales signal: any Passenger list undercounts, because the header can be switched off. Use it to find the Rails and Node.js shops that left it on, not to size Phusion's market.
Nearly a quarter is one sports platform
SportsEngine, the youth-sports platform, accounts for 6,108 domains, 23.43% of the clean set. Its club sites load SportsEngine's scripts, and all 11 in my sample reported Passenger without a version number from behind Cloudflare. Spectator Sports leads the industry chart at 13.08% for the same reason.
Sales signal: strip SportsEngine domains before prospecting. A club on SportsEngine didn't choose an app server, and SportsEngine is the only account behind all of them.
Vendors pick Passenger, customers inherit it
The company list makes the same point at the top end. Of our 50 rows, 36 are subdomains a software vendor runs. 21 are PeopleAdmin hiring portals, among them the University of Kentucky's, answering as Apache with Passenger 6.0.15. Seven are gift-card shops on Techsembly, for Mandarin Oriental, Aman, Raffles, Six Senses, Soho House, Banyan Group and COMO. Three are patient logins hosted on HealtheIntent, two are careers sites from Hospitality Online that report Passenger Enterprise 6.2.0, two are SimpleNexus mortgage portals and one is USA Hockey on SportsEngine. Ola, Munich Airport, Jazzercise, Furman University and the University of Hamburg's mathematics, informatics and natural sciences faculty run Passenger on their own servers.
"Most of the big names on this list never chose Passenger. PeopleAdmin, Techsembly and SportsEngine did, and their customers' subdomains carry the header." - David Thomson, CTO at TechnologyChecker.io
The overlap figures follow from how Passenger installs. 10,430 domains show it with Nginx today and 5,177 with Apache, out of 12,002 and 5,988 ever seen together. Passenger is a module inside those servers, so none of this is switching.
Sales signal: the account behind most enterprise rows is the vendor. PeopleAdmin, Techsembly and HealtheIntent are the buyers of hosting, monitoring and Passenger Enterprise support, not the universities and hotels.
The companies behind the domains
62.98% of matched companies with a known size have 1 to 10 employees and 85.82% have 50 or fewer; only 213 have more than 1,000 staff. 6.11% were founded before 1960, the universities and federations again. The United States has 5,159 matched companies, and the nine European countries in our top 15 add up to 3,902. EasyBroker, a Mexican real-estate CRM that builds agents' sites, loads on at least 671 domains, which helps explain both Mexico's 484 and Real Estate's 5.38%.
Sales signal: outside the platforms, the typical Passenger site is a small business whose developer or host set it up. Agencies and managed hosts are the route in, more than the business owner.
Rails, and a lot of Node.js
Across the 26,064 clean live domains, Ruby on Rails shows on 54.07%, a figure that's partly circular because our Rails rule also fires on a mod_rails or mod_rack header, which some Passenger builds send themselves. The Node.js side is larger than Passenger's Ruby reputation suggests: Next.js is on 13.13% and Express 4.84%. In my sample, Next.js and Express apps reported Passenger on Plesk servers that add PleskLin to the same header. Ahoy, a Rails analytics library, turns up on 0.79%.
Sales signal: a Next.js site answering through Passenger is usually on shared or panel-managed hosting. That's a prospect for a move to a managed Node platform.
Versions and what Enterprise costs
The open-source edition is free under the MIT licence on GitHub, where 6.2.0 came out on 18 August 2026. In the last 30 days we saw 3,625 Passenger domains already reporting 6.2.0 and 3,813 reporting 6.1.8. Older builds linger: counting only the most common version strings, at least 963 domains report a 5.x or 4.x release, and our list runs from PeopleAdmin's 6.0.15 to Munich Airport's Enterprise 5.0.29 and a 3.0.11 build on the University of Ferrara's directory. Passenger Enterprise is priced by server RAM, from $23.52 a month for production clusters on Phusion's pricing page.
Sales signal: a visible version string older than 6.0 is an upgrade or support conversation. Phusion's own Enterprise support is the obvious offer, and security scanners will find the same list useful.
Key takeaways
1. 26,065 domains, 10th of 70 in Web Servers with 0.18%, read from the Server or X-Powered-By header.
2. We removed 2,884 lottery sites that copy a Passenger 5.1.5 header behind OpenResty.
3. SportsEngine is 23.43% of the clean set, and 36 of our 50 company rows are subdomains that vendors such as PeopleAdmin run.
4. 62.98% of matched companies have 1 to 10 staff, and Node.js frameworks are common next to Rails.
5. Overlaps with Nginx and Apache are integration, not switching.
Working with the list
Remove SportsEngine domains first, then group the enterprise rows by the vendor behind the subdomain. For the full list of 26,065 Passenger domains with company and stack data, explore TechnologyChecker.io. Our guide to technology detection methods explains why a header detection can name the platform rather than the site owner.
Frequently Asked Questions
Who uses Phusion Passenger?
Mostly platforms and the small sites they host. Our October 2026 crawl finds 26,065 domains with a Passenger header; 23.43% are SportsEngine youth-sports sites and 62.98% of matched companies have 1 to 10 staff. Large names usually reach it through a vendor, such as PeopleAdmin's university hiring portals. Ola, Munich Airport and Jazzercise run it on their own servers.
How many customers does Phusion Passenger have?
Phusion's homepage says over 650,000 sites use Passenger, a figure we can't check. We count 26,065 domains whose responses name it in October 2026, 14,325 matched to a company, after removing 2,884 lottery sites that copy its header. The gap is expected: Passenger's header can be switched off, so treat 26,065 as visible installs, not a customer count.
What is Phusion Passenger's market share?
0.18% of Web Servers, 10th of the 70 technologies we track there, on 26,065 domains in October 2026. Apache (5,365,858) and Nginx (5,101,407) hold most of the category. Kestrel is one place above with 26,519, and Tengine is 12th with 16,071. Passenger usually runs inside Nginx or Apache, so its share overlaps with theirs.
What are the best alternatives to Phusion Passenger?
For Ruby apps, Puma is the usual alternative and the most common comparison in search results for Passenger. Puma has no row in our Web Servers table, so we can't count it. For Node.js apps, PM2 or a platform's own process manager does the same job. Nginx (5,101,407 domains) and Apache stay in front either way.
Which countries use Phusion Passenger the most?
By country, the United States leads with 5,159 matched companies, ahead of Germany (899), the United Kingdom (633), India (599), and France and Mexico (484 each). The nine European countries in our top 15 add up to 3,902. Mexico ranks high partly because EasyBroker, a Mexican real-estate CRM whose agent websites answer through Passenger, is on at least 671 domains.
What size companies use Phusion Passenger?
Mostly very small ones. 62.98% of matched companies with a known size have 1 to 10 employees and 22.84% have 11 to 50, so 85.82% have 50 or fewer. Does Phusion Passenger work with Node.js?
Yes. Passenger 6 runs Ruby, Node.js and Python apps, per Phusion's homepage. Our crawl shows Node.js is a big share: Next.js is on 13.13% of Passenger domains and Express on 4.84%. In a random sample of 60 we requested, seven Node apps reported Passenger, several on Plesk servers that list PleskLin next to it.
Which is better, Passenger or Puma?
It depends on how you deploy. Passenger installs into Nginx or Apache and manages app processes for you, which suits servers hosting many apps; 10,430 domains in our crawl show it alongside Nginx. Puma usually runs as its own process behind a separate proxy. We can't compare usage, because Puma doesn't identify itself in headers we track.
Is Phusion Passenger a web server?
It's an app server that can also serve HTTP. Most installs run it as a module inside Nginx or Apache. In a random sample of 60 domains, 9 belonged to the lottery network we later removed; of the other 51, only 8 named Passenger in the Server header and 39 named it only in X-Powered-By. That's why 10,430 domains show Passenger and Nginx together.
How does TechnologyChecker.io detect Phusion Passenger?
From response headers. A domain counts when the Server or X-Powered-By header names Phusion Passenger. That catches sites hosted on platforms built with Passenger, such as SportsEngine, and it can't catch sites that switch the header off. It also caught a lottery network sending a copied Passenger header; we removed those 2,884 domains before counting.
