Next to the other .NET CMSs it's a peer: Sitecore has 14,847 domains and Kentico CMS 9,025. Its customers are older and larger than Craft CMS's, and 502 matched companies have more than 1,000 staff.

Umbraco Usage Statistics
Umbraco reads 10,195 live domains in June 2026, 12,657 in July, 12,794 in August, 13,259 in September and 13,372 in October. The June to July step mostly comes from our side: the set of domains we crawl turns over every month, with dead sites dropping out and newly found ones added, and our detection signals widen over time. Since July the line has added 715 domains, about 5.6%. Exits are real too. 1,073 domains have dropped Umbraco since we began tracking it in mid-March 2026.

Which Countries Use Umbraco the Most?
Which countries use Umbraco the most? The United Kingdom, with 1,961 matched companies, then the Netherlands (1,427) and the United States (1,261). Denmark, Umbraco's home market, is fourth with 752, and Sweden (497) and Norway (215) also make the top ten. Put the three Nordic countries together and they hold 1,464 companies, more than the US. These counts cover the 8,593 Umbraco domains we matched to a company.
Share of the 8,593 Umbraco domains we matched to a company record — 64.3% of the 13,372 we detect. Top 15 countries shown, so these do not sum to 100%. Domains with no matching company record are not represented here and skew small and independent.
Umbraco Market Share Among CMS & Website Builders
What is Umbraco's market share? 0.08% of CMS & Website Builders, #48 by domain count, based on our live crawl at TechnologyChecker.io. WordPress holds 60.06% of the category on its own, so the share says little about a .NET CMS. The fair comparison is the other .NET platforms. Sitecore has 14,847 domains, just 1,475 more than Umbraco's 13,372, and Kentico CMS has 9,025.
Top Competitors by Market Share
Umbraco Customers by Company Size & Age
What size companies use Umbraco? Mostly small ones, with a real enterprise tail. 38.65% of matched companies with a known size have 1 to 10 employees and 26.75% have 11 to 50. 502 have more than 1,000 staff, about 6.2% of the 8,046 with a known size. On Craft CMS's profile that share is about 1.8%. The big names are often manufacturers: PACCAR, Danfoss, Kohler and Smiths Group all run their corporate sites on Umbraco.
Company Size Distribution
Company Age (Founded Decade)
The largest group of matched companies was founded in the 2010s (23.65%), then the 2000s (19.23%). But 50.87% were founded before 2000 and 15.79% before 1960, while only 6.26% date from the 2020s. For comparison, 42.3% of Craft CMS's matched companies predate 2000. The oldest names on the list include Vienna Insurance Group (1824), Carlsberg Group (1847) and Smiths Group (1851).
What Industries Use Umbraco the Most?
Financial Services leads at 5.24%, then Construction (3.65%), Hospitality (3.58%), Hospitals and Health Care (3.31%) and Real Estate (3.15%), based on our enriched company data. The top ten industries add up to 31.88%, so no sector dominates. Two rows are unusual for a CMS: Government Administration (2.5%), which fits the UK councils on the list, and Motor Vehicle Manufacturing (2.06%), where PACCAR sits.
UK councils using Umbraco include Lancashire County Council and Cornwall Council, both on their main sites. Hospitals on Umbraco include Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, Spire Healthcare and OLVG in Amsterdam. Manufacturers using Umbraco include Danfoss, PACCAR, Kohler, Smiths Group and the Turkish manufacturer Arçelik.
Umbraco Alternatives & Competitors
WordPress (60.06%) tops this table, but Umbraco's real rivals are the other .NET CMSs. Sitecore has 14,847 domains and Kentico CMS 9,025, and Umbraco's 13,372 sits between them. Drupal (1.04%) and TYPO3 (0.58%) are the open-source PHP CMSs a European agency would also weigh. Our migration data favours Umbraco against its .NET peers: since March, 29 domains moved to Umbraco from Kentico, Sitecore, Optimizely or DNN, and 8 went the other way.
Umbraco Customer Migration
These counts are domains, over the last 30 and 90 days and since we began tracking in March 2026. A CMS change means rebuilding the site, so each row is a replatform. WordPress is the big two-way flow: 173 domains left Umbraco for WordPress and 107 came the other way, 126 and 85 of them in the last 90 days. Against .NET platforms it reverses. Kentico sent 12 and took 4, and Sitecore sent 11 and took 1. Webflow takes more than it gives, 16 out and 6 in. Every row is small, so read the direction, not a trend.
Tech Stack of Umbraco-Powered Websites
Percentages here are of the 13,447 live Umbraco domains left after excluding five gambling pages. Google Analytics runs on 73.13% and Cloudflare on 32.32%. Microsoft ASP.NET registers on only 31.21%, though every Umbraco site runs on .NET: our ASP.NET test needs a header, session cookie or ViewState field that many current builds don't send. Consent banners are everywhere. Cookie Control, Civic's consent tool, is on 22.62% and Cookiebot on 19.4%, and site search barely registers: Algolia is on 0.37%.

Expert Analysis: Umbraco Growth Trends & Key Signals for Sales Teams in 2026

I pulled Umbraco out of our October 2026 crawl to see who still builds on a .NET CMS, and the answer is more European and more corporate than I expected. A domain counts when its pages carry one of Umbraco's own fingerprints: the X-Umbraco-Version header, an Umbraco generator tag, Umbraco Forms markup, links in Umbraco's umb:// format or calls to its /umbraco/ endpoints. I checked the test on 166 random live domains. 147 loaded, and 134 of those showed one of the markers in the page source or in a browser. Seven more served images from Umbraco's media folders, and six showed nothing on the homepage that day. That leaves 13,372 live domains, 8,593 of them matched to a company.
Domains, not companies
Count accounts before you count rows. In the same sample, 42 of the 147 domains that loaded (29%) redirected to another domain. Some are old brand names. Some are typo domains: teleperformamce.com and proud2betp.com both land on tp.com, TP's main site. A large organisation can appear several times, once per alias and once per subdomain, like registrar.osu.edu at Ohio State or careers.nationalhighways.co.uk.
Sales signal: dedupe an Umbraco list by redirect target and root domain before you size a territory. The account count will come in well under the domain count.
Slow growth since July
The chart reads 10,195 in June, 12,657 in July, 12,794 in August, 13,259 in September and 13,372 in October. The June to July step is mostly our side: the domains we crawl turn over every month as dead sites drop out and new ones come in, and our detection signals widen over time. Since July the line has added 715 domains, about 5.6%. Some sites do leave. 1,073 domains dropped Umbraco since we began tracking it in mid-March 2026, and we can't yet say how many of those were sites closing down.
"Umbraco's line moves slowly, the way a mature product's does. The map stands out: the UK alone has more Umbraco companies than the United States." - Emma Davies, Data Analyst at TechnologyChecker.io
Sales signal: treat Umbraco as a stable pool of about 13,000 domains. Sell to the sites that already run it; new adopters arrive slowly.
Older and larger than it looks
38.65% of matched companies with a known size have 1 to 10 employees and 26.75% have 11 to 50. The tail is heavier than Craft CMS's, though. 502 companies have more than 1,000 staff, about 6.2%, against 1.8% on Craft's profile. Age tells the same story: 50.87% were founded before 2000 and 15.79% before 1960, while only 6.26% date from the 2020s. The large names lean industrial. PACCAR, Danfoss, Kohler, Smiths Group and Carlsberg Group are all on the list, and Carlsberg's back office signs in through Umbraco Cloud, the vendor's hosted service, rather than a self-hosted install.
Sales signal: at a 1,000-plus company, an Umbraco site is often run by a digital team with an agency partner. Find out who the agency is before you go looking for the buyer.
A North Sea CMS
The United Kingdom has 1,961 matched companies, the Netherlands 1,427 and the United States 1,261. Denmark, where Umbraco is based, adds 752. Add Sweden (497) and Norway (215) and the three Nordic countries hold 1,464, more than the US. The consent data follows the map. Cookie Control, Civic's consent banner, runs on 22.62% of Umbraco domains, against 9.67% on Craft CMS's, and Cookiebot is on 19.4%. The public sector is a real segment too: Government Administration holds 2.5% of matched companies, with Lancashire County Council and Cornwall Council on the list, and Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust is there too.
Sales signal: for UK public-sector accounts and Dutch or Danish mid-market firms, an Umbraco list is a sharp starting point. US prospects exist, but they are a minority of the base.
Where sites go, and where they come from
All counts here are domains since mid-March 2026. WordPress is the large two-way flow: 173 domains left Umbraco for WordPress and 107 came the other way, 126 and 85 of them in the last 90 days. Against the .NET platforms the direction flips. 29 domains moved to Umbraco from Kentico, Sitecore, Optimizely or DNN, and 8 went back. Sitecore alone sent 11 and took 1. These are small numbers, but they point the same way. Webflow takes more than it gives, 16 out and 6 in, and two Umbraco domains moved to Craft CMS.
"Umbraco loses sites to WordPress and wins them from the other .NET CMSs. Both flows are small, but the second says something about where .NET teams think the value is." - Emma Davies, Data Analyst at TechnologyChecker.io
Sales signal: for Umbraco agencies, Sitecore and Kentico sites in their region are the warmest replatforming prospects. For anyone selling against Umbraco, the 173 domains already moved to WordPress show that the switch happens, and in which direction.
The stack around it
Umbraco is written in C# and has run on ASP.NET Core since version 9 (Wikipedia). Yet Microsoft ASP.NET registers on only 31.21% of Umbraco domains. Our ASP.NET test needs a header, session cookie or ViewState field that many current builds don't send, so the figure says more about server configuration than about who runs .NET. Google Analytics is on 73.13% and Cloudflare on 32.32%. JavaScript front ends are rare: Next.js on 1.19%, Blazor on 0.39%. A site that uses Umbraco only as a headless back end, with another framework rendering the pages, can show none of Umbraco's markers, so most of those builds sit outside our count. Site search barely registers. Algolia is on 0.37%, Cludo on 0.32% and Raffle on 0.19%.
Sales signal: almost no Umbraco site runs a dedicated site-search tool. For a search vendor with a .NET integration, this list is mostly open ground.
What it costs
The CMS is free and open source under the MIT licence. Umbraco, founded in 2003 and headquartered in Odense, Denmark, according to its about page, also sells Umbraco Cloud. Cloud starts at €45 a month for Starter, then €280 for Standard and €730 for Professional, with Enterprise quoted (pricing page, checked 10 October 2026). Every plan is hosted on Microsoft Azure. The long-term-support line is Umbraco 17, at 17.7.1 since 6 October 2026, and the release page schedules Umbraco 19 for 10 December.
Sales signal: the licence costs nothing, so the budget goes on hosting, agencies and add-ons. Those are the line items to sell into.
Key takeaways
1. 13,372 live domains, #48 in CMS & Website Builders and close to Sitecore's 14,847.
2. A UK, Dutch and Nordic base: the UK has 1,961 matched companies to 1,261 in the US.
3. Older and larger than Craft CMS's base, with 50.87% founded before 2000 and 502 companies above 1,000 staff.
4. Loses sites to WordPress (173 out, 107 in) and gains them from the other .NET CMSs (29 in, 8 out).
5. 29% of sampled domains redirect elsewhere, so dedupe before you count accounts.
How to use this list
Filter by country and company size, then dedupe by redirect target and root domain. Good places to start are UK councils and NHS trusts, Dutch and Danish mid-market firms, and the 502 companies above 1,000 staff. This page shows 50 of the 8,593 matched companies. The full set of 13,372 Umbraco domains, with company, size and stack data, is on TechnologyChecker.io.
Frequently Asked Questions
Who uses Umbraco?
Mostly small and mid-sized organisations in the UK, the Netherlands and the Nordics, plus a solid enterprise tail. Our October 2026 crawl finds Umbraco on 13,372 live domains. 38.65% of matched companies have 10 or fewer staff and 502 have more than 1,000. Named customers include Carlsberg Group, Danfoss, PACCAR, Kohler, Frontier Airlines, Smiths Group and Lancashire County Council.
How many customers does Umbraco have?
Our October 2026 crawl finds Umbraco live on 13,372 domains, and 8,593 of them match to a company. Read that as domains rather than customers: in a random sample of 147 live Umbraco domains that loaded, 42 redirected to another domain, often a brand's main site. 1,073 domains have dropped Umbraco since we began tracking it in March 2026.
What is Umbraco's market share?
0.08% of CMS & Website Builders, ranking #48 by domain count in our crawl. The share is small because WordPress alone holds 60.06% of the category. Among .NET CMSs, Umbraco is a peer: Sitecore has 14,847 domains, Umbraco 13,372 and Kentico CMS 9,025. Drupal (1.04%) and TYPO3 (0.58%) are larger PHP alternatives.
What are the best alternatives to Umbraco?
For a .NET team, the nearest alternatives are Sitecore, Kentico and Optimizely. Drupal and TYPO3 are the open-source PHP options common in Europe, and Craft CMS suits agencies building bespoke sites. Since March 2026, more domains moved from Kentico, Sitecore, Optimizely or DNN to Umbraco (29) than the reverse (8). WordPress gained more from Umbraco than it gave.
Which countries use Umbraco the most?
The United Kingdom, with 1,961 matched companies, then the Netherlands (1,427), the United States (1,261), Denmark (752) and Sweden (497). Denmark, Sweden and Norway together hold 1,464, more than the US. These counts cover the 8,593 Umbraco domains we matched to a company, so read them as the shape of the base rather than a census.
What size companies use Umbraco?
Mostly small ones, with a heavier enterprise tail than Craft CMS has. 38.65% of matched companies with a known size have 1 to 10 employees and 26.75% have 11 to 50. 502 have more than 1,000 staff, about 6.2%, against 1.8% on Craft CMS's profile. Large names include PACCAR, Carlsberg Group, Danfoss, Smiths Group and Kohler.
How old are companies that use Umbraco?
Older than you might expect for an open-source CMS. The largest group was founded in the 2010s (23.65%), then the 2000s (19.23%), but 15.79% predate 1960 and 50.87% were founded before 2000. Only 6.26% date from the 2020s. Long-established names on the list include Vienna Insurance Group (1824), Carlsberg Group (1847) and Smiths Group (1851).
What is the ideal customer profile for Umbraco?
The ideal Umbraco customer is: Company Size: 1-10 employees (38.65%), then 11-50, Location: UK, Netherlands, US, then Denmark, Founded: 2010s (23.65%); half before 2000, Industry: Financial services, construction, hospitality, Site stack: .NET site running Google Analytics — based on our analysis of 8,593 enriched companies at TechnologyChecker.io.
Is Umbraco free?
Yes. The Umbraco CMS is open source under the MIT licence, so you can download and self-host it without a licence fee. You still pay for hosting, development and any paid add-ons. Umbraco's hosted service, Umbraco Cloud, starts at €45 a month for Starter, then €280 for Standard and €730 for Professional, with Enterprise quoted. Checked 10 October 2026.
Is Umbraco still used?

Is Umbraco better than WordPress?
It depends on your team. Umbraco suits organisations with .NET developers who want structured content and tight editor control; WordPress has a far larger theme, plugin and hosting market. Self-hosted Umbraco can run wherever .NET runs. In our crawl, 32.32% of live Umbraco domains sit behind Cloudflare, Cloud and self-hosted sites together. Checked 10 October 2026.
What code does Umbraco use?
C#. Umbraco runs on Microsoft .NET, on ASP.NET Core since version 9, usually with a Microsoft SQL Server database, and templates are Razor views. In our crawl, Microsoft ASP.NET registers on 31.21% of Umbraco domains. That's a floor, because our ASP.NET test needs a header, session cookie or ViewState field that many current .NET builds don't send.
