Algolia Usage Statistics

We first picked up Algolia on a single domain in May 2013. Growth was slow for years. By late 2017, it had ~1,100 active domains. Then something shifted. Between July 2020 and January 2021, active domains jumped from 5,281 to 12,114, a 2.3x spike in six months. The pandemic forced every company with a product catalog or help center to fix their search. Algolia peaked at 51,227 active domains in March 2025. That's consistent with the company's own claim of 1.75 trillion annual searches, per their December 2025 Cyber Weekend press release.

List of Companies Using Algolia

Our verified list of companies using Algolia on TechnologyChecker.io covers brands that use Algolia across 45 industries and 12+ countries, from Starbucks and Samsung to Walgreens and Uber. One thing stands out: many of the websites using Algolia in our database are staging subdomains, developer portals, and internal tools (learning-tools-stage.siemens.com, developer.hdfcbank.com, engineering.statefarm.com). Algolia's real organizational reach is wider than what public-facing sites alone would suggest.

Which Countries Use Algolia the Most?

Which countries use Algolia the most? The US leads at 37.1% of enriched companies. No surprise there. The UK takes #2 at 8.8%. But here's what's unusual: France ranks #3 at 7.2%. Most American-headquartered SaaS tools see France at 2-3%. Algolia was founded in Paris in 2012, and that origin story shows up in the data. LVMH, Orange, L'Oreal, Alstom, EssilorLuxottica, all French enterprises, all running Algolia. These three countries combined account for over 53% of Algolia's user base, based on our enriched company data at TechnologyChecker.io.

Algolia Market Share Among Site Search

What is Algolia's market share? Our Site Search category puts Algolia at #20 with 0.13%, but that metric is misleading. We detect 60,483 active domains running Algolia's JavaScript SDK across our 50M+ domain crawl, which is 60x the category count. The gap? Many Algolia implementations power documentation search, internal tools, and API-driven experiences that don't fit neatly into "site search" as a category. Gartner apparently agrees with Algolia's broader positioning: they named it a Leader in the 2025 Magic Quadrant for Search and Product Discovery for the second consecutive year, based on our market share data at TechnologyChecker.io.

Algolia Customers by Company Size & Age

Is Algolia only for large enterprises? No. 58.1% of Algolia customers have 1-10 employees based on our analysis of 36,074 enriched companies. A developer adds Algolia to a docs site in an afternoon, and that's most of the customer base. But the enterprise tail is fat. 3.9% have 10,001+ employees. That's about double the SaaS average. Siemens, JP Morgan Chase, Samsung, they're all here. Per SaaStr's Jason Lemkin, enterprise accounts generate 80% of Algolia's revenue despite being a small fraction of customers.

Company Size Distribution

Company Age (Founded Decade)

What Industries Use Algolia the Most?

Software Development tops the list at 8.5%. Retail follows at 5.45%, then Technology/Internet at 5.25%. Tech-adjacent verticals together exceed 18%, but no single industry breaks 9%. That spread matters. Algolia isn't an ecommerce search tool that happens to work elsewhere. It's a horizontal platform. Financial Services (2.39%) and Education (1.96%) each have real presence too, based on our enriched company data.

Software Development2,777 (8.5%)
Retail1,779 (5.45%)
Technology, Information and Internet1,716 (5.25%)
IT Services and IT Consulting1,363 (4.17%)
Financial Services782 (2.39%)
Advertising Services708 (2.17%)

Software development companies using Algolia are the top vertical at 8.5%. Docs search is a big reason. Stripe, Twilio, and hundreds of smaller SaaS companies use Algolia to power their developer documentation. Retail brands on Algolia come in at 5.45%, and the results are concrete: Lacoste reported a +150% increase in sales contribution from search after implementing Algolia, per their published case study. Financial services firms using Algolia like JP Morgan Chase and Morgan Stanley show it handles regulated industries too.

Algolia Alternatives & Competitors

Algolia ranks #20 in Site Search with 0.13% share, but the category is full of niche plugins, not direct competitors. Instant Search Plus (2.29%) is a Shopify-only search app. Yext (1.0%) competes in enterprise content search. The real competition comes from outside this category: Elasticsearch (open-source, self-hosted) and Meilisearch (0.13%), which went from zero to 985 detected domains in under four years. Algolia's co-founder, per SaaStr, said Elasticsearch was always their #1 competitor. Based on our market share data across 50M+ crawled domains at TechnologyChecker.io.

Algolia Customer Migration

Based on 36,073 enriched companies, the biggest migration corridor is Typeahead.js: 3,559 companies gained, 3,222 lost, a modest 1.1:1 ratio. Bloodhound Typeahead is more telling: 1,589 gained versus 175 lost, a 9:1 ratio. Companies are clearly replacing legacy autocomplete libraries with Algolia's InstantSearch widgets. The Meilisearch corridor is the one to watch: 232 gained, 231 lost. That's a dead-even 1:1 split. Neither platform has a migration advantage over the other right now.

Expert Analysis: Algolia Growth Trends & Key Signals for Sales Teams in 2026

Mehmet Suleyman
Mehmet SuleymanCEO & Co-founder, TechnologyChecker

I've spent 10+ years building web crawlers and analyzing technographic data. For this report, I dug into Algolia's footprint across 60,483 active domains and 36,074 enriched company profiles matched to LinkedIn data. Some context: Algolia started in Paris in 2012 as a mobile SDK. It didn't take off. The founders pivoted to a cloud search API, went through Y Combinator's W14 batch, and hit $20M ARR by 2017 (per Latka). By 2021, they'd crossed $100M+ ARR (per SaaStr) and raised $335M total at a $2.25B valuation. A March 2026 Forrester TEI study found Algolia customers see 213% ROI with payback in six months. Here's what our crawl data says about who's actually using it, as of March 2026.

1. Growth trajectory

Three phases. From 2013 to 2017, Algolia grew to about 500 active domains. Slow. The first real spike came in January 2018, when we saw 2,275 active domains in a single month (up from 1,166 the month before). Phase two ran from 2018 to mid-2020: steady climb to 5,000 domains. Then COVID hit everything. Between July 2020 and January 2021, active domains jumped from 5,281 to 12,114. Everyone needed search for their docs, help centers, and suddenly-online catalogs. The climb didn't stop. Algolia peaked at 51,227 active domains in March 2025. That aligns with their own claim of 1.75 trillion annual searches, published in their December 2025 Cyber Weekend report.

"The pandemic doubling wasn't just ecommerce. Docs portals, developer hubs, internal tools, they all needed search. Algolia's API model made it the quickest path." - Mehmet Suleyman, CEO at TechnologyChecker.io

Sales Signal: Still growing. Algolia added 18,000+ active domains between January 2023 and March 2025. New docs sites and headless commerce builds are the two use cases driving it. Target companies that just shipped a documentation portal or migrated to a headless CMS.

2. Customer profile

Polarized. 58.1% of Algolia customers have 1-10 employees. One developer, one docs site, one afternoon. That's the typical adoption story. But 3.9% have 10,001+ employees, roughly double the SaaS norm. We see Siemens on learning-tools-stage.siemens.com. Starbucks on starbucks.com. JP Morgan Chase on jpmorganchase.com. Walgreens appears both in our detection data and in Algolia's own published case studies.

Here's the thing about those enterprise detections: they're mostly on subdomains and staging environments. That's departmental adoption, not org-wide mandates. Per SaaStr, though, these enterprise accounts generate 80% of Algolia's revenue despite being a fraction of the customer count.

Age distribution: 36.3% of customers were founded in the 2010s, 21.9% in the 2020s. So 58.2% are digital-native. But the pre-1960 cohort (Shell, Bayer, USPS) still accounts for 9.7%.

Sales Signal: Two buyer personas. Small teams adopt bottom-up (a developer signs up for the free tier). Enterprises buy top-down (procurement, legal, security review). You need different messaging for each. Algolia's own pivot to utility-based pricing, per SaaStr, accelerated growth by aligning with what mid-market buyers wanted.

3. Industry and geographic concentration

Software Development leads at 8.5%. Retail at 5.45%. Tech/Internet at 5.25%. IT Services at 4.17%. Combined tech-adjacent share: over 18%. No single industry breaks 9%, so Algolia is a horizontal platform, not an ecommerce tool that happens to work elsewhere.

Geography is where it gets interesting. US: 37.1%. UK: 8.8%. France: 7.2%. That France number is 2-3x what you'd see for a typical American SaaS company. Algolia was born in Paris, and the data shows it. LVMH, Orange, L'Oreal, Alstom, EssilorLuxottica. Five major French enterprises, all in our detection data. Club Med announced an Algolia implementation in March 2026 for AI-powered travel search.

Sales Signal: France isn't a secondary European market for Algolia, it's a primary one. Education (1.96%) and Construction (1.79%) look underrepresented relative to what Algolia can do. Those are opportunity verticals.

4. Migration patterns

The Typeahead.js corridor is biggest: 3,559 companies came from Typeahead.js to Algolia, 3,222 went the other way. A 1.1:1 ratio. Against Bloodhound Typeahead, the numbers are clearer: 1,589 gained, 175 lost. That's 9:1. Companies are swapping out old autocomplete libraries for Algolia's InstantSearch widgets.

The Meilisearch numbers tell a different story. 232 gained, 231 lost. Dead even. Meilisearch went from zero to 985 detected domains in four years with an open-source model and flat pricing. Neither platform has a migration advantage right now.

"The 1:1 equilibrium between Algolia and Meilisearch isn't noise. It's a signal that open-source search is a real alternative, not just a hobbyist tool." - Mehmet Suleyman, CEO at TechnologyChecker.io

Sales Signal: Best inbound leads: companies leaving Typeahead.js or Bloodhound. They've already decided they need better search. For competitive deals, target the 148 companies that left Meilisearch in the past year. They tried open-source, hit a wall (probably scaling or support), and are open to paying for managed search.

5. Technology ecosystem

Google Analytics at 77.1% is baseline. What's more telling: Microsoft Clarity (15.9%) and Hotjar (15.4%) both sit above 15%. Algolia buyers care about UX analytics. Makes sense. If you're paying for search, you're measuring how people use it.

Drupal at 4.4% is the top CMS overlap. That's the docs search use case. Magento at 4.0% is ecommerce. AngularJS (10.0%) and Vue.js (7.1%) lead the frontend frameworks, matching Algolia's InstantSearch widget support. Shopify overlap is low. Instant Search Plus owns that niche with 17,936 domains, though Algolia announced Shopify integration enhancements in March 2026 (per Digital Commerce 360).

Sales Signal: CMS tells you the use case before you call. Drupal = docs. Magento = catalog. Low Shopify overlap = untapped market. The March 2026 Shopify push suggests Algolia knows it.

6. G2 review signals

G2 data (351 total mentions across 5 pros and 5 cons) backs up what the migration data hints at. Ease of use (72 mentions) is the top pro. Speed gets 39+38 mentions across two categories. The #1 con? Expensive pricing (33 mentions), followed by unclear pricing structure (20 mentions). That's 53 mentions on pricing alone versus 72 on ease of use. Algolia's own switch to utility-based pricing (per SaaStr) was an attempt to fix this, but the G2 complaints persist.

Cross-referencing with our migration data: pricing pressure aligns with the even Meilisearch exchange (232:231). Developers who cite cost concerns have a viable open-source alternative now.

Sales Signal: Lead with ease of use and speed in outreach. Proactively address pricing by showing ROI numbers. The March 2026 Forrester study found 213% ROI, so that's a concrete anchor for objection handling.

7. Key takeaways

1. Algolia added 18,000+ domains between 2023 and 2025. Growth hasn't plateaued.

2. Bimodal customer base: 58.1% tiny teams, 3.9% with 10,001+ employees. Enterprise accounts generate 80% of revenue (per SaaStr).

3. France at 7.2% is 2-3x the norm for SaaS. Paris roots create a home-market advantage.

4. Meilisearch migration is dead even (1:1). Open-source search is a real competitor now.

Different tools for different teams. Algolia is hosted, API-first, and optimized for sub-100ms responses with minimal setup. Elasticsearch is self-hosted and open-source with much more control over infrastructure. Per SaaStr, Algolia's co-founders always said Elasticsearch was their #1 competitor, and they were honest about where each one wins.

How is Algolia so fast?

Algolia handles most computation at indexing time rather than query time, so searches execute against pre-optimized data structures. The engine is built in C++ and runs as an NGINX module. Do the math: a site with 1M monthly searches and 500K records pays about $655/month before AI features. Pricing is the #1 complaint on G2 (33 mentions for "expensive pricing" plus 20 for "unclear pricing structure").

Meilisearch wins on cost, transparency, and data sovereignty.

Why do companies switch away from Algolia?

Pricing is the main driver. G2 reviewers cite "expensive pricing" (33 mentions) and "unclear pricing structure" (20 mentions) as top concerns. Our migration data confirms it: 3,222 companies moved to Typeahead.js (a free library), 257 to Ajax Search Lite, and 231 to Meilisearch (open-source). The pattern is clear: companies leave when costs outpace the value they're getting.
