Companies Using Varnish

Our October 2026 crawl finds 455,550 domains whose responses carry a Varnish header, usually Via: 1.1 varnish or X-Varnish. Varnish is a caching proxy, and that header is written by whoever runs the proxy, which is often a CDN or a host rather than the site owner. When we re-requested a random 600 domains on 16 October 2026, 239 (39.83%) came through Fastly, whose cache servers run Varnish-derived software, including 102 GitHub Pages sites. Another 188 (31.33%) were One.com hosting. Below is the list of companies that use Varnish, with size, country, industry and stack.

The rest run Varnish themselves or through a smaller host: Acquia's Drupal cloud, MoxiWorks' real-estate agent sites, Belgian host Combell, Gandi, or a company's own servers behind Cloudflare or Akamai. gov.uk, the BBC, Apple's App Store pages and Nordstrom answer through Fastly; Renault Group, La Poste Groupe and Tech Mahindra send their own X-Varnish header.

Varnish ranks 3rd of 12 rows in Caching with 16.11%. Most rows above and below it are WordPress caching plugins, so the share compares a proxy header with plugin footprints, not like-for-like products.

Varnish Usage Statistics

Varnish reads 375,048 domains in June 2026, 410,513 in July, 417,588 in August, 451,261 in September and 455,550 in October. Those months don't track the same domains. The set of domains we crawl turns over every month, with dead sites dropping out and newly found ones added, and our detection signals widen over time. Since tracking began on 16 March 2026, 35,020 domains dropped the header on at least one hostname; in a 16 October check, 3,092 of the domains that had dropped it still sent it from another hostname.

List of Companies Using Varnish

Who uses Varnish? This list names 50 of the 267,048 matched companies, ranked by LinkedIn following. We requested every detection URL on 16 October 2026 and 45 sent a Varnish header; Home Depot, Carrefour, Cummins, Italy's education ministry and ADEO's supplier portal blocked us. We replaced three rows: UBS and Thales pages that loaded without the header, and a duplicate ministry row matched to the wrong country. Most websites using Varnish at large companies are one site behind a CDN, not a Varnish server the company runs.

Which Countries Use Varnish the Most?

Which countries use Varnish the most? The United States has the most matched companies, 63,190, then the Netherlands (25,629), Germany (25,090) and the United Kingdom (18,836). The Netherlands, Sweden (17,609), Belgium (16,635), Norway (10,633) and Denmark (10,220) together hold 80,726, more than the US. That's One.com's footprint: the Danish host's servers answer through Varnish, and 31.33% of our random sample sat on its network. These counts cover the 267,048 domains we matched to a company.

Varnish Market Share Among Caching

What is Varnish's market share? 16.11% of Caching, 3rd of the 12 technologies we track there at TechnologyChecker.io, counting domains. LiteSpeed Cache leads with 1,560,073 (55.18%) and WP Rocket follows with 718,843 (25.43%). The rows measure different layers: Varnish's count is a proxy header, and 71.00% of a random 600 came from two operators, Fastly and One.com, so the share says more about those platforms than about Varnish installs.

Varnish Customer Reviews with Pros and Cons

G2's AI summary of the Varnish Software listing (100 reviews, read in October 2026) is thin, with one to four mentions per theme. Reviewers choose it for fast cached delivery, and three of the four reviewers G2 quotes say debugging or tuning takes hands-on skill. Those reviews describe running Varnish yourself, which is not how most sites in our count meet it: of 600 Varnish domains we re-requested, 239 (39.83%) came through Fastly and 188 (31.33%) were One.com hosting.

Generated from real user reviews on G2

Pros
  • Reviewers credit it with fast cached content delivery, saying its caching noticeably speeds up pages for end users.(4 reviews)
  • Some find it easy to handle in DevOps work and say it fits well with the rest of their stack.(3 reviews)
Cons
  • Debugging is tricky, reviewers say, and often needs manual fine-tuning plus better monitoring than they get today.(2 reviews)
  • Setup and tuning demand real expertise, and one reviewer adds that the cache needs a lot of RAM to run efficiently.(1 review)
  • One reviewer wants a cheaper tier for plain proxy use, without paying for the CDN side of the commercial product.(1 review)

Expert Analysis: Varnish Growth Trends & Key Signals for Sales Teams in 2026

David Thomson
David ThomsonCTO, TechnologyChecker

I run the crawler that stores the response headers of every domain we visit, and Varnish is a header most site owners never chose. Our October 2026 crawl counts 455,550 domains, 3rd of 12 in Caching with 16.11%, and 267,048 matched to a company. On 16 October 2026 I re-requested a random 600 from the clean set, resolved each address to its network and read every response header.

What the header means

A domain counts when a response carries Via with "varnish" in it or any X-Varnish header. Varnish is a caching reverse proxy, so the header belongs to whoever runs the proxy. The open-source project now goes by Vinyl Cache, "formerly known as Varnish Cache" on its project site, and the headers haven't changed. 556 of the 600 (92.67%) still sent one on the day.

Sales signal: this row tells you a cache sits in front of the site; who configured it is a separate question.

Two operators write most of it

Fastly carried 239 sampled domains (39.83%). Fastly's documentation says its cache servers run software derived from the open-source Varnish daemon. Inside that group, GitHub Pages accounts for 102 domains, Pantheon's WordPress and Drupal hosting 38 and Adobe Portfolio 34, and 65 are other Fastly customers such as gov.uk, the BBC and Nordstrom. One.com carried 188 (31.33%), nearly all answering Via: 1.1 webcache1 (Varnish/trunk) or webcache2, the Danish host's own cache layer.

"Seven in ten Varnish domains are Fastly's edge or One.com's shared hosting. The site owner picked a CDN, a GitHub repository or a hosting plan, and Varnish came with it." - David Thomson, CTO at TechnologyChecker.io

Together the two cover 426 of the 600 (71.00%); one domain showed both. Neither operator is a single customer running Varnish on unrelated sites, so nothing is removed, but the list has to be read through them.

Sales signal: split the list by operator before anything else. Fastly customers buy CDN and edge services; One.com customers buy hosting packages.

Smaller hosts and teams that run their own

135 sampled domains (22.50%) send Varnish headers from somewhere else. 18 sit behind Cloudflare with Varnish at the origin, 13 more are on AWS, 12 are MoxiWorks real-estate agent sites, 10 are on Gandi, 9 on Belgian host Combell and 8 on Acquia's Drupal cloud. The enterprise names here run Varnish in their own stack: Renault Group, La Poste Groupe and Tech Mahindra return their own X-Varnish IDs, and Lidl's US careers site does so behind Akamai.

Sales signal: this fifth, minus the 39 on MoxiWorks, Gandi, Combell and Acquia, is where a Varnish buyer lives, an engineering team that configures caching. Vinyl Cache, Varnish Enterprise, managed CDNs and observability tools all have a conversation here.

How much of it is live

Our title census of the clean set finds 12,924 domains (2.86%) whose last crawled page was a placeholder or error: 3,075 "Hosted By One.com" pages for domains with no site, 1,651 GitHub Pages "Site not found" or "Page not found" pages, 1,096 Adobe Portfolio domains that redirect to Portfolio's "missing" page, plus Dutch hosts' default pages and error pages. That's under the level where we remove a fleet, so they stay in the count. The live sample was worse: 38 domains (6.33%) showed a placeholder or error page, 19 an HTTP error and 9 didn't answer. A failed fetch doesn't change a domain's status.

Sales signal: one row in ten may be a dead site behind a live cache. Check a domain before outreach.

Who the site owners are

70.51% of sized companies have 1 to 10 staff, but 4,661 have more than 1,000, and pre-1960 founders make up 6.94%, high for a hosting-led list. The Netherlands, Sweden, Belgium, Norway and Denmark hold 80,726 matched companies against the US's 63,190. Industries are flat: IT services 3.86%, software development 3.82%, construction 3.65%.

Sales signal: two lists in one. Nordic and Benelux small businesses on One.com, and large organisations behind Fastly or Pantheon. Price and pitch them separately.

Overlap and churn

We don't publish switching rows here, and the overlaps read as layers. 8,742 domains run Varnish and WP Rocket today, 1,471 LiteSpeed Cache, 230 NitroPack and 172 W3 Total Cache. A WordPress plugin behind a Varnish edge is normal. Movement in the monthly line, 375,048 in June to 455,550 in October, comes partly from our side: the domains we crawl turn over every month and our detection widens. 35,020 domains dropped the header on a hostname since 16 March 2026, and 3,092 of those still send it elsewhere.

"When a Varnish header disappears, the usual story is a site that left One.com or a domain that stopped pointing at GitHub. Nobody uninstalled a cache." - David Thomson, CTO at TechnologyChecker.io

Sales signal: a dropped Varnish header is a hosting or CDN event. Watch it as a sign of a site moving.

The stack around it

Across 452,508 clean domains, Apache answers behind the cache on 36.55% and Nginx on 18.44%. WordPress runs on 31.98%, Drupal on 6.26%, Adobe Portfolio on 4.68% and Next.js on 3.91%. One.com appears on 25.03% and our Fastly row on 23.85%, a floor next to the 39.83% we traced to Fastly's network on the day.

Sales signal: the Drupal and Next.js slices are the engineering-led accounts; the WordPress slice mostly isn't.

What it costs

Varnish Software's pricing page says Varnish Cache, the open-source project its products build on, is free and always will be, and its paid products start with a free trial. For most of this list the cost is buried in a Fastly bill or a One.com plan.

Key takeaways

1. 455,550 domains, 16.11% of Caching; 92.67% of a 600-domain sample still sent the header.

2. Fastly carries 39.83% of the sample and One.com 31.33%.

3. GitHub Pages alone is 17.00%.

4. Varnish outside Fastly and One.com is about a fifth, and it still includes smaller hosts; the enterprise teams that run their own are in that group.

5. 2.86% of the clean set showed a placeholder title at its last crawl.

How to use this list

Segment by operator: Fastly, One.com, GitHub Pages, Pantheon, then self-run. Only the last group is likely to have chosen Varnish itself, and even it includes smaller hosts such as Gandi and Combell. Compare with LiteSpeed Cache for the hosting-cache side. The full list of 455,550 domains, with 267,048 matched companies, is on TechnologyChecker.io.

Of a random 600 domains we re-requested on 16 October 2026, 39.83% came through Fastly, including GitHub Pages, Pantheon and Adobe Portfolio sites, and 31.33% were One.com hosting. Large names include gov.uk, the BBC and Nordstrom through Fastly, and Renault Group and La Poste Groupe with their own Varnish.

How many customers does Varnish have?

Our October 2026 crawl counts 455,550 domains with a Varnish header, 267,048 matched to a company. They are domains, not Varnish customers: the open-source cache is free, and most headers are written by Fastly or One.com for their own customers. 92.67% of a random 600 still sent the header on 16 October 2026.

What is Varnish's market share?

16.11% of Caching at TechnologyChecker.io, 3rd of 12 technologies, behind LiteSpeed Cache (55.18%) and WP Rocket (25.43%). Varnish's figure counts a proxy header, mostly from Fastly's edge and One.com's hosting, while most other rows count WordPress plugins. So the share compares how often each signal appears, not how many teams chose Varnish.

What are the best alternatives to Varnish?

It depends which Varnish you mean. Sites on Fastly or One.com don't run Varnish themselves; their alternative is another CDN or host, such as Cloudflare. Teams running their own cache compare it with Nginx's cache or a CDN. WordPress sites often add a plugin instead: 8,742 domains run Varnish and WP Rocket together in our crawl.

Which countries use Varnish the most?

By matched companies: the United States (63,190), the Netherlands (25,629), Germany (25,090), the United Kingdom (18,836) and Sweden (17,609). The Netherlands, Sweden, Belgium, Norway and Denmark together hold 80,726, more than the US. That reflects One.com, the Danish host whose servers answer through Varnish and which held 31.33% of our random sample.

What size companies use Varnish?

Mostly small ones: 70.51% of matched companies with a known size have 1 to 10 employees, the One.com and GitHub Pages part of the list. 4,661 have more than 1,000 staff. Large organisations usually reach Varnish through a platform, such as gov.uk and the BBC through Fastly, or Starbucks' coffee-at-home site through Pantheon.

How old are companies that use Varnish?

Among the Varnish domains we could match to a company with a known founding date, the largest group was founded in the 2010s (39.76%), followed by the 2020s (21.38%). That matched subset is drawn from 267,048 companies and is not representative of all 455,550 detected domains. This suggests Varnish is most popular among relatively young companies.

What is the ideal customer profile for Varnish?

The ideal Varnish customer is: Company Size: 1-10 employees (70.51%), Location: US, Netherlands, Germany, UK, Founded: 2010-2019 (39.76%), Industry: IT services, software, construction, retail, Signal: Fastly-served site or One.com hosting — based on our analysis of 267,048 enriched companies at TechnologyChecker.io.

What is Varnish Cache used for?

It sits in front of a web server and caches its responses, so repeat requests skip the slow application. Vinyl Cache's project site describes it as a caching HTTP reverse proxy that speeds up delivery. In our crawl it most often appears as an edge layer: Fastly's CDN and One.com's shared hosting account for 71.00% of a random sample.

Is Varnish Cache still used?

Yes, widely, though usually as part of a CDN or hosting plan. Our October 2026 crawl counts 455,550 domains sending a Varnish header, and 556 of a random 600 still sent it on 16 October 2026. Much of that is Fastly, whose documentation says its cache servers run software derived from Varnish, and One.com's hosting.

Is Varnish Cache now called Vinyl Cache?

The open-source project is. Vinyl Cache's site calls it "formerly known as Varnish Cache". Varnish Software now describes its Varnish Cache as a distribution of the open-source Vinyl Cache project, with TLS, container and long-term-support additions. Servers still send Varnish headers either way, and our crawl counts both under this row.

Does Fastly use Varnish?

Yes. Fastly's documentation says its cache servers run software derived from the open-source Varnish caching daemon, and that each Varnish process adds an X-Varnish transaction ID. That's why Fastly-served sites show up here. In our random 600, 239 domains (39.83%) came through Fastly, 102 of them GitHub Pages sites and 38 Pantheon sites.

Is Varnish Cache free?

Yes. Varnish Software's pricing page says Varnish Cache, the open-source project its products are built on, is free and always will be. Its paid products, Varnish Enterprise, Varnish CDN, Virtual Registry and Artifact Firewall, each offer a free trial. For most domains on this page the cache cost sits with Fastly, One.com or another host.

Why does One.com hosting show up as Varnish?

Because One.com's web servers answer through a Varnish cache. In our random 600, 188 domains (31.33%) sat on One.com's network and 186 of them sent headers such as Via: 1.1 webcache1 (Varnish/trunk). Our stack data puts One.com on 25.03% of clean domains. The customer chose One.com; the cache came with the hosting.

Why do GitHub Pages sites send a Varnish header?

GitHub Pages is served through Fastly, so its responses carry Fastly's Via: 1.1 varnish and X-Served-By headers. 102 of our random 600 (17.00%) were GitHub Pages sites. Our title census also finds 1,651 Varnish domains showing GitHub's "Site not found" or "Page not found" page, custom domains that no longer point at a repository.

What does Via: 1.1 varnish mean?

Via is a standard header that each proxy adds as a response passes through it, so "1.1 varnish" says a Varnish cache handled the request over HTTP/1.1. A version or hostname often follows, as in One.com's "webcache1 (Varnish/trunk)". It tells you a cache layer exists, not who runs it; the network and other headers answer that.
