Our live crawl finds GitHub Pages serving 69,967 domains, resolving to 34,835 identifiable organisations. Named users include the United Nations Development Programme, the University of Maryland, TED, Block, Splunk and Vox Media, usually through documentation or open-source subdomains. Software development is the largest industry at 15.59%.

We detect 69,967 domains running GitHub Pages across our monthly crawl of live business domains. Company data could be matched for 34,835 of them (49.8%), and every company-size, industry and country breakdown on this page describes that matched subset rather than the full detected base. A further 2,774 domains carried a GitHub Pages detection previously and no longer do.

GitHub Pages holds 2.99% of the PaaS category, ranking #7. This is a share of the domains we detect running a platform in this category — not a share of all websites, and not a share of spending — so it is not directly comparable to figures published on other denominators.

The closest substitutes are Vercel (389,653 domains) and Netlify (154,481), which target the same static and JAMstack deployment workflow with more build tooling and serverless capability. Amazon Web Services (936,363) and Firebase (160,932) also host static sites but serve much broader workloads.

The United States leads at 32.54% of matched organisations (9,023), with India a strong second at 9.93% (2,754), then the United Kingdom at 8.13% (2,254), Brazil at 4.64% and Canada at 4.50%. India and Brazil both index well above our corpus norm, which is typical of free developer tooling.

Organisations with 1 to 10 employees are 79.11% of matched companies and 11 to 50 a further 15.47%, so 94.58% have fewer than 50 staff. Only 0.45% employ more than 1,000 people. GitHub Pages is free for public repositories, so nothing filters out the small end of the market the way a licence fee does.

This is a young base. Organisations founded in the 2010s are 45.31% of matched companies and those founded in the 2020s a further 39.87%, so 85.18% were founded since 2010. Only 2.71% date from the 1990s, which reflects a platform adopted by newer companies and open-source projects rather than established institutions.

Based on our matched data, the typical GitHub Pages domain belongs to a US, Indian or UK organisation with fewer than ten employees, founded since 2010, working in software development or IT services. It is chosen by developers for documentation and project sites rather than bought through procurement, so team composition predicts adoption better than company size.

We detect GitHub Pages on 69,967 domains as of our August 2026 crawl, of which 34,835 match to a named organisation. This counts custom domains served by the platform, so the very large number of sites published on github.io subdomains without a custom domain are not represented and the true total is far higher.

Software Development leads at 15.59% of matched organisations, with IT Services and IT Consulting at 11.42% and Technology, Information and Internet at 7.77%. Those three alone are 34.78%, making this the most technical customer base of any hosting platform we track. Retail and consumer sectors are largely absent.

We match two of GitHub's own response headers: a Server header of exactly GitHub.com and the X-GitHub-Request-Id header its edge attaches to every response. Both are emitted by the platform when it serves a page, so a detection is direct evidence the domain is hosted on GitHub Pages rather than merely built from a GitHub repository.

Google Analytics appears on 33.84% of these domains and Google Tag Manager on 31.99%, both below the corpus norm because documentation and project sites carry little marketing instrumentation. Cloudflare fronts 28.57%, while Next.js (4.33%) and Astro (3.62%) identify the framework-built subset of the base.

Yes, and the flow runs against GitHub Pages. We recorded 416 domains moving to Vercel against 138 arriving from it, and 101 moving to Amazon Web Services against 147 arriving. Vercel is the single largest destination for domains leaving GitHub Pages on the window we can observe.

GitHub Pages holds 2.99% of our PaaS category and ranks 7th of 41 tracked technologies. Share is measured by distinct domains, and the category mixes general-purpose cloud with specialist static hosting, so Amazon Web Services alone holds 39.98%. The figure reflects a narrower remit rather than a weak competitive position.
