Companies Using XenForo

Our live crawl identifies 7,881 domains running XenForo, resolving to 878 identifiable organisations. Named users include Screwfix, CD Projekt Red, Frontier Developments, Tom's Hardware, Comic Book Resources, the Alzheimer's Society, Diabetes UK, Ernie Ball and Paul Reed Smith Guitars. XenForo is the largest self-hosted forum platform we detect.

The number that separates it from every other forum platform is not its size. It is that a quarter of its install base runs header bidding. Prebid appears on 24.71% of XenForo domains, against 7.99% on vBulletin, 5.13% on phpBB, 4.64% on Invision Power Board and 1.75% on Discourse. XenForo is the only forum software whose customers are monetised like publishers.

XenForo Usage Statistics

XenForo reads 5,069 domains on our first full monthly rollup in June 2026 and 7,881 by August 2026. That is coverage, not adoption. Licensed forum software does not grow 55% in two months, and the new detections cluster on the same crawl dates that unrelated technologies gained domains on. Quote the August figure and ignore the slope.

List of Companies Using XenForo

The named list below is ordered by company size and covers 50 of the 878 matched organisations. Almost every detection resolves to a forum or community subdomain, such as community.screwfix.com, forums.cdprojektred.com and forum.diabetes.org.uk, which is how XenForo is deployed: a board attached to a main site built on something else entirely.

Which Countries Use XenForo the Most?

XenForo is the most Anglophone platform in the category. The United States accounts for 327 matched companies, 42.25% of the geographic base, and the United Kingdom adds 12.40%. Germany (6.98%) and Canada (6.20%) follow. Turkey (3.23%) and Vietnam (2.71%) are the two entries that do not fit the pattern, and both are large enthusiast-forum markets in their own right.

XenForo Market Share Among Community & Comments

XenForo holds 13.97% of Community and Comments and ranks 2nd behind Disqus, which is a hosted comment widget rather than a forum. Among self-hosted forum applications it is 1st, ahead of phpBB (6,550 domains), Discourse (3,760), Invision Power Board (3,001) and vBulletin (2,154). Our category page currently shows a different ranking because it still carries a detection defect we have since fixed; the figures on this page are the corrected ones.

XenForo Customers by Company Size & Age

66.54% of matched XenForo companies employ 1 to 10 people and 21.97% employ 11 to 50. That is the highest small-company concentration of any platform in this category, and it sits oddly beside a licence that has to be bought. The resolution is that a successful forum is often a two-person business with a large audience, which is exactly the profile that can justify paying for software and running header bidding on it.

What Industries Use XenForo the Most?

Technology, Information and Internet leads at 13.90%, followed by Computer Games (6.68%), Software Development (5.18%), IT Services and IT Consulting (4.22%), Online Audio and Video Media (3.13%), Motor Vehicle Manufacturing (3.00%) and Spectator Sports (2.72%).

Read past the technology rows and a single market appears. Computer Games (6.68%), Online Audio and Video Media (3.13%), Motor Vehicle Manufacturing (3.00%) and Spectator Sports (2.72%) together reach 15.53%, and the named list fills in what that means: CD Projekt Red, Frontier Developments and Hypixel in games; Tom's Hardware and All About Circuits in enthusiast publishing; Ernie Ball and Paul Reed Smith Guitars for musicians; Nosler and Bennington Marine for shooting and boating. XenForo's market is the hobby that people will read a forum about every day.

XenForo Alternatives & Competitors

Disqus leads Community and Comments at 13,033 domains, but it solves a different problem: it attaches a hosted comment thread to a page you already have. XenForo, phpBB (6,550), Discourse (3,760), Invision Power Board (3,001) and vBulletin (2,154) are applications with accounts, moderation and a database. Within that group XenForo is the largest, and it is the only paid one that has grown its position rather than inherited it.

Expert Analysis: XenForo Growth Trends & Key Signals for Sales Teams in 2026

Mehmet Suleyman
Mehmet SuleymanCEO & Co-founder, TechnologyChecker

The forum platform that is really an advertising business

We measure five forum applications with enough scale to compare. On four ordinary advertising signals, XenForo is not slightly ahead of the others. It is in a different band.

Prebid, the header-bidding library, appears on 24.71% of XenForo domains. On vBulletin it is 7.99%, on phpBB 5.13%, on Invision Power Board 4.64% and on Discourse 1.75%. Google Publisher Tag runs 26.25% on XenForo against 4.81% on phpBB. Taboola is 16.65% against 3.71%. Even plain AdSense, the one every hobby site has, is 35.11% against 17.21%.

Prebid is the number worth stopping on, because nobody installs header bidding casually. It exists to run an auction between several demand sources before the page renders, and setting it up implies an ad operations function, a direct relationship with more than one exchange, and enough traffic that the difference between bidders is worth the latency. A quarter of XenForo's install base has all three. One in fifty-seven Discourse domains does.

That reframes the licence question. XenForo costs money and phpBB does not, and the usual reading is that XenForo is what you buy when you can afford better software. The data says something narrower: XenForo is what you buy when the forum earns. A board with an ad-ops team has an obvious reason to pay for support and a predictable upgrade path, and a board without one does not.

Two thirds of these companies have ten people or fewer

66.54% of matched XenForo companies employ 1 to 10 people. That is the highest small-company share in this category, higher than free phpBB at 65.35%, which looks backwards for paid software.

It is not backwards, it is the same fact from a different angle. A large forum and a large company are unrelated. Tom's Hardware, Comic Book Resources, All About Circuits and Hypixel all appear in this list, and all of them serve audiences far out of proportion to their headcount. Forum publishing is a business where two people and a database can support a community of hundreds of thousands, and the advertising numbers above are how those two people get paid.

If you are sizing this market from the company records alone you will get it badly wrong. The right unit for XenForo is not employees, it is monthly readers, and we cannot see that. Treat the 1 to 10 band as a statement about staffing, not about reach.

Forums do not migrate. They close.

351 domains stopped returning a XenForo signal over our tracking window. We checked all of them against every other forum platform in our corpus, and 9 now run one. Two went to Flarum, two to phpBB, two to Discourse, and one each to Simple Machines Forum, MyBB and Tapatalk.

Nine out of 351 is not a migration pattern, it is the absence of one. Every other category we publish has a readable exit corridor, because software gets replaced by other software. Forums do not behave that way. The cost of a migration is not the import script, it is the twenty years of threads, the permalinks and the search traffic attached to them, so a community that has stopped being worth running is closed rather than moved.

The inbound side is the mirror image and it is equally sparse: 14 domains arrived from vBulletin and 5 from phpBB, with nothing going back the other way to vBulletin at all. That is the migration the forum world has been describing since 2010, when XenForo was founded by vBulletin's former lead developers, and fifteen years later we can still see the last of it moving. Both numbers are small enough that you should read them as direction and not as volume.

One caveat on the ranking

The market share on this page, 13.97%, is calculated on a denominator that excludes a technology our category page still counts. Livefyre, a comment product Adobe discontinued in 2017, was matching another library's JavaScript global and reading as 227,094 domains when its real footprint is 74. That inflated the category total roughly fivefold and compressed every genuine share into a rounding error. We have fixed the rule; the category page will catch up when the affected domains are next crawled. Until then, this page and that one will disagree, and this page is the one to trust.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who uses XenForo?

Our live crawl finds XenForo on 7,881 domains, resolving to 878 identifiable organisations. Named users include Screwfix, CD Projekt Red, Frontier Developments, Tom's Hardware, Comic Book Resources, the Alzheimer's Society and Ernie Ball. Games, enthusiast media, motoring and sport together account for 15.53% of matched companies.

How many customers does XenForo have?

We detect XenForo on 7,881 active domains as of our August 2026 rollup, of which 878 resolve to a company record. The enrichment rate is low because many XenForo boards are enthusiast communities run by individuals, which have no company record to match.

What is XenForo's market share?

XenForo holds 13.97% of Community and Comments and ranks 2nd behind Disqus. Among self-hosted forum applications it ranks 1st, ahead of phpBB at 6,550 domains, Discourse at 3,760, Invision Power Board at 3,001 and vBulletin at 2,154.

What are the best alternatives to XenForo?

phpBB is the free self-hosted alternative and the closest match on features, at 6,550 domains. Discourse is the modern option at 3,760 and Invision Power Board the other commercial one at 3,001. Disqus is larger than all of them but replaces a forum with a comment thread rather than matching it.

Which countries use XenForo the most?

The United States leads with 327 matched companies at 42.25%, followed by the United Kingdom (12.40%), Germany (6.98%) and Canada (6.20%). Turkey and Vietnam appear next, both being unusually strong enthusiast-forum markets.

What size companies use XenForo?

66.54% of matched companies employ 1 to 10 people and 21.97% employ 11 to 50. A large forum is frequently a very small business with a very large audience, which is why a paid licence and a professional ad stack coexist with a two-person company record.

How old are companies that use XenForo?

41.19% of matched companies were founded in the 2000s and 12.36% in the 1990s, so 53.55% predate 2010. Only 12.13% were founded in the 2020s. XenForo's customers are older than its software, because most of them ran a different forum first.

What is the ideal customer profile for XenForo?

A community of 1 to 10 staff, founded in the 2000s, in the United States or the United Kingdom, built around a hobby with daily readers: games, cars, guitars, boats, shooting, electronics or a sports club. The second profile is a consumer brand running a public support community beside its main site.

Is XenForo worth paying for when phpBB is free?

Our data cannot answer that on features, but it can on who pays. XenForo domains run header bidding at 24.71% against phpBB's 5.13%, Google Publisher Tag at 26.25% against 4.81%, and Taboola at 16.65% against 3.71%. XenForo is bought by forums with advertising revenue to protect, where phpBB carries the ones without it.

Do forums migrate from vBulletin to XenForo?

Yes, and it is the only migration our data shows clearly. 14 domains now running XenForo have dropped vBulletin over our tracking window, and none moved the other way. The counts are small because our churn history is about three months deep, but the direction is one-sided.

Where do forums go when they leave XenForo?

Mostly nowhere. 351 domains stopped returning a XenForo signal over our tracking window, and only 9 of them now run any other forum platform we detect. Forums that leave XenForo overwhelmingly close rather than migrate, which is the single biggest difference between forum software and the rest of our corpus.

What does XenForo detection actually measure?

We match XenForo on its session and CSRF cookies, on a JavaScript global its interface sets, and on the identifier its templates put on the html element. All three come from the running application, so a match means a live board. A board behind a login wall can still be matched, because the cookies are set before authentication.
