Companies Using MkDocs
Our October 2026 crawl finds MkDocs on 2,405 domains, and every one of the 38 random sites we opened was built with Material for MkDocs, the theme that writes MkDocs' version into each page. MkDocs' own themes don't write it, so sites built on them, mkdocs.org included, aren't in this count. MkDocs is free and open source, so these are documentation sites rather than paying customers. Below is the list of companies that use MkDocs, with size, country, industry and hosting. It includes SailPoint's product documentation, DataRobot's docs, Percona's docs and the user guides of CSC, Finland's IT centre for science.
MkDocs ranks 11th of the 70 tools we track in Documentation & Knowledge Base, with a 1.29% share. The bigger story is the version. 1,783 of the 2,373 live domains we could read (75.1%) run MkDocs 1.6.1, released in August 2024 and still the latest on PyPI. Material for MkDocs went into maintenance mode in November 2025 while its team builds Zensical, and 12 of the 30 MkDocs leavers we opened now run Zensical.

MkDocs Usage Statistics
MkDocs reads 1,080 domains in June 2026, 1,341 in July, 2,119 in August, 2,401 in September and 2,405 in October. The rise to September isn't a rush of new docs sites. The set of domains we crawl turns over every month, with dead sites dropping out and newly found ones added, and over the summer our crawl covered more of the web while our detection widened. September to October is flat. Since we began tracking MkDocs on 16 March 2026, 147 domains have dropped it from a hostname; 12 still run it on another one, so 135 left entirely.

Which Countries Use MkDocs the Most?
Which countries use MkDocs the most? The United States, with 295 matched companies, then Germany (83) and the United Kingdom (82), France (48), the Netherlands (33) and Switzerland (31). Europe counts for more than on rival profiles: MkDocs has about one German company for every 3.6 American ones, where Docusaurus' profile shows one for every 6.4 (162 to 1,044). These counts cover the 1,091 MkDocs domains we matched to a company.
Share of the 1,091 MkDocs domains we matched to a company record — 45.4% of the 2,405 we detect. Top 15 countries shown, so these do not sum to 100%. Domains with no matching company record are not represented here and skew small and independent.
MkDocs Market Share Among Documentation & Knowledge Base
What is MkDocs's market share? 1.29% of Documentation & Knowledge Base, 11th of the 70 tools we track there, on 2,405 domains in our October 2026 crawl at TechnologyChecker.io. Only part of that table is like-for-like. Docusaurus (6,424 domains, 3.45%) is the closest match, another static site generator for docs. GitBook (6,309) is a hosted platform and MediaWiki (6,487) runs wikis. And because our rule only sees themes that write MkDocs' generator tag, the real MkDocs footprint is larger than 2,405.
Top Competitors by Market Share
MkDocs Customers by Company Size & Age
What size companies use MkDocs? Small ones. 57.08% of matched companies with a known size have 1 to 10 employees and 29.71% have 11 to 50, so 926 of 1,067 (86.8%) have 50 staff or fewer. Only 11 have more than 500. The largest names on the list include SailPoint (1,001 to 5,000 staff) and Serpro, the Brazilian government's IT services company (5,001 to 10,000), which runs its help centre on MkDocs.
Company Size Distribution
Company Age (Founded Decade)
46.74% of matched companies were founded in the 2010s and 35.55% in the 2020s, so 82.29% date from 2010 or later. That 2020s share is below Docusaurus' 44.88% and GitBook's 53.76%, so MkDocs' users are a little more established than theirs. Only 14 of 751 (1.9%) were founded before 1990.
What Industries Use MkDocs the Most?
Software Development leads at 29.27%, then IT Services and IT Consulting (12.65%) and Technology, Information and Internet (11.24%), based on our enriched company data. Add Computer and Network Security (3.97%) and Information Technology & Services (3.78%) and tech companies make up 60.91% of matched companies. The rest is a long tail of financial firms, research groups and hardware makers that publish manuals.
Software companies using MkDocs include SailPoint, DataRobot, Percona, Matillion and Spacelift, nearly always on a docs. subdomain. Research computing centres on MkDocs include CSC in Finland, CSCS in Switzerland and NERSC in the United States, which document their systems for users. Hardware makers using MkDocs include Zurich Instruments and Opentrons, both for product documentation.
MkDocs Alternatives & Competitors
Overlap with the four tools in this table is small. Today 11 domains run MkDocs and Docusaurus, 5 run it with GitBook, 4 with MediaWiki and 26 with Swagger UI, the API reference viewer that often sits inside a docs portal. Most domains ever seen with each pair still run both, GitBook aside (5 of 11), and the numbers are too small to call a trend. The move we did see is to Zensical: in a sample of 30 domains that dropped MkDocs, 12 had switched to it.

Expert Analysis: MkDocs Growth Trends & Key Signals for Sales Teams in 2026

MkDocs is free, so this page counts documentation sites, not customers. A domain counts when a page's generator meta tag starts with "mkdocs-" and a version number, and that detail matters more than it sounds. Material for MkDocs, a third-party theme, writes the tag on every page. MkDocs' built-in themes don't, and mkdocs.org, which uses one of them, carries no tag at all. So our October 2026 count of 2,405 domains is in practice a count of Material for MkDocs sites. I opened 40 random domains from it: 38 loaded, and all 38 ran Material. Of the other two, one forwarded to a lander page and one sat behind a bot check.
Docs hosts, not company sites
1,025 of the 2,427 live domains (42.2%) carry MkDocs on a docs. or doc. hostname, close to the 45.1% that Docusaurus' profile reports. 117 more use a help. or support. host and 66 a wiki. host, and several hundred run it on the bare domain, often for an open-source project or a personal site. The 1,091 domains we matched to a company are mostly small software firms: 57.08% of those with a known size have 1 to 10 staff, and Software Development, IT Services and Technology, Information and Internet add up to 53.16%. The bigger names run it on one documentation property: SailPoint, DataRobot, Percona, Matillion, Jitterbit and KX.
Sales signal: treat each row as a docs team's site, not a company website. The buyer is a technical writer or a developer-experience lead, and the docs hostname tells you which product they document.
Version 1.6.1 almost everywhere
The usage chart reads 1,080 domains in June 2026 and 2,405 in October, but that rise isn't adoption: the set of domains we crawl turns over every month, with dead sites dropping out and new ones added, and our crawl covered more of the web while our detection widened. The version tag is more telling. Of 2,373 live domains with a reading, 1,913 (80.6%) run a 1.6 release and 1,783 (75.1%) run 1.6.1, published on PyPI on 30 August 2024 and still the latest release when I checked on 13 October 2026. 185 run 1.5 and 275 something older, 10 of them pre-1.0. The Material team wrote in November 2025 that MkDocs had been unmaintained since August 2024, and its post on MkDocs 2.0 says the planned rewrite, still in pre-release, drops plugins, moves configuration to TOML and won't run Material.
"Three in four MkDocs sites we can read run the same release, 1.6.1, and it's more than two years old. That's an installed base waiting for a decision." - Sophie Clarke, Product Marketing Manager at TechnologyChecker.io
Sales signal: every team on this list has to choose between an unmaintained 1.x, a breaking 2.0, Zensical or another generator. Migration services and hosted docs platforms have a dated reason to call.
Material in maintenance mode
Material for MkDocs entered maintenance mode with version 9.7.0 in November 2025: critical bugs and security issues get fixed for at least 12 months, and no features are added. The same release made the paid Insiders features free, and the team now builds Zensical, an MIT-licence generator that reads mkdocs.yml. In my random sample, 16 of the 38 Material sites were on 9.7 and 22 on older lines, two still on 7.x. Insiders builds still show on DataRobot's, KX's and Jitterbit's docs and on 2 of the 38 random sites, although the Insiders repository was due to be deleted on 1 May 2026.
Sales signal: sites still running an Insiders build belonged to paying sponsors. They've shown they will pay for documentation tooling, which makes them the best first calls for a supported alternative.
Where the leavers went
Since we began tracking MkDocs on 16 March 2026, 147 domains have dropped it from a hostname. 12 still run it on another one, so 135 left entirely. I opened 30 of those 135. 12 now carry Zensical's generator tag, among them msys2.org, concourse-ci.org, docs.hyva.io and docs.pgedge.com. Five build with ProperDocs, a fork of MkDocs 1.x first published in March 2026 whose tag our MkDocs rule doesn't match, so they're still MkDocs sites in all but name. Two moved to Astro and two to Hugo, one still runs MkDocs, and the other eight are gone, forward elsewhere or show no generator.
"Zensical took 12 of the 30 MkDocs leavers I opened. None of them went to Docusaurus or GitBook." - Sophie Clarke, Product Marketing Manager at TechnologyChecker.io
Sales signal: so far, MkDocs churn looks like an upgrade path inside the Material ecosystem, not losses to rivals. Docusaurus and GitBook sellers should pitch on the cost of MkDocs 2.0's breaking changes, not on features.
The rival table
MkDocs is 11th of 70 tools in Documentation & Knowledge Base with 1.29%. Docusaurus (6,424 domains) is the like-for-like rival. GitBook (6,309) is hosted, MediaWiki (6,487) runs wikis and Swagger UI (3,094) renders API references. Overlaps are small: 11 domains run MkDocs and Docusaurus today, 5 GitBook, 4 MediaWiki and 26 Swagger UI, and none of these pairs passes our switching tests.
Sales signal: the 26 domains that also run Swagger UI publish both written guides and an API reference. They're the warmest list for an API documentation platform.
The stack around it
These percentages are of the 2,427 live domains. GitHub Pages is on 38.15%, and Fastly shows on 38.11% because GitHub Pages serves through Fastly. Amazon Web Services (18.09%), Vercel (5.77%) and Netlify (5.6%) follow, and Cloudflare fronts 47.42%. jsDelivr (20.89%), cdnjs (15.57%) and unpkg (11.87%) supply scripts. Google Analytics is on 46.85%, Cloudflare Browser Insights on 18.79% and Plausible on 3.42%.
Sales signal: these sites build in CI and deploy static files to free hosting. Paid hosting, search or analytics has to beat a price of zero, so sell what the free stack can't do.
Key takeaways
1. 2,405 domains, 11th of 70, and in practice a count of Material for MkDocs sites.
2. 75.1% of readable domains run MkDocs 1.6.1, the August 2024 release.
3. 86.8% of matched companies with a known size have 50 or fewer staff.
4. 12 of the 30 leavers I opened moved to Zensical, and 5 to ProperDocs.
5. GitHub Pages is on 38.15% of live domains.
How to use this list
Filter by docs hostname and company size, then check each site's generator tag before you pitch: a site on Material 9.7 is a different conversation from one on 7.x. For the full list of 2,405 MkDocs domains with company, size and stack data, explore TechnologyChecker.io.
Frequently Asked Questions
Who uses MkDocs?
Mostly small software and IT companies publishing product, API and help documentation. Our October 2026 crawl finds MkDocs on 2,405 domains, 42.2% of live ones on a docs. or doc. hostname. 57.08% of matched companies with a known size have 1 to 10 staff. Named users include SailPoint, DataRobot, Percona, Matillion, KX, Jitterbit and Finland's CSC.
How many customers does MkDocs have?
None in the paying sense: MkDocs is free and open source. Our October 2026 crawl finds it on 2,405 domains, 1,091 of them matched to a company. That counts sites whose theme writes MkDocs' generator tag, which in practice means Material for MkDocs; sites on MkDocs' built-in themes aren't counted. 135 domains have dropped it entirely since March 2026.
What is MkDocs's market share?
1.29% of Documentation & Knowledge Base, 11th of the 70 tools we track there, on 2,405 domains in our October 2026 crawl. The closest like-for-like rival, Docusaurus, has 6,424 domains (3.45%). GitBook (6,309) and MediaWiki (6,487) are bigger but different products, a hosted platform and wiki software. MkDocs' real footprint is larger, because MkDocs' own themes carry no tag we can detect.
What are the best alternatives to MkDocs?
Zensical, from the Material for MkDocs team, reads existing mkdocs.yml files, and 12 of 30 MkDocs leavers we opened now run it. Docusaurus (6,424 domains), Meta's React-based generator, is the closest like-for-like rival, GitBook (6,309) is hosted, and ProperDocs is a fork of MkDocs 1.x. Only 11 domains run MkDocs and Docusaurus together today.
Which countries use MkDocs the most?
The United States, with 295 matched companies, then Germany (83), the United Kingdom (82), France (48), the Netherlands (33) and Switzerland (31). That's about one German company for every 3.6 American ones, against one for 6.4 on Docusaurus' profile, so MkDocs leans more European. These counts cover the 1,091 MkDocs domains in our crawl that we matched to a company.
What size companies use MkDocs?
Small ones. 57.08% of matched companies with a known size have 1 to 10 employees and 29.71% have 11 to 50, so 926 of 1,067 (86.8%) have 50 staff or fewer. Only 11 have more than 500. The larger names on the list include SailPoint, Serpro, DataRobot, KX and Matillion, each running MkDocs on a documentation host rather than its main site.
How old are companies that use MkDocs?
Young. Among matched companies with a known founding year, 46.74% were founded in the 2010s and 35.55% in the 2020s, so 82.29% date from 2010 or later. That 2020s share is lower than Docusaurus' 44.88% or GitBook's 53.76%, per their profiles, so MkDocs' users are a little more established. Only 14 of 751 (1.9%) were founded before 1990.
What is the ideal customer profile for MkDocs?
The ideal MkDocs customer is: Company Size: 1-10 employees, then 11-50, Location: United States, then Germany and UK, Industry: Software, IT services and internet, Founded: 2010-2019, then 2020s, Typical site: Docs subdomain on GitHub Pages — based on our analysis of 1,091 enriched companies at TechnologyChecker.io.
Is MkDocs still maintained?
Barely. MkDocs 1.6.1, released on 30 August 2024, was still the latest version on PyPI on 13 October 2026, and the Material for MkDocs team calls 1.x unmaintained. A rewritten MkDocs 2.0 is in pre-release; Material's team says it drops plugins and won't run Material. In our crawl, 75.1% of readable MkDocs domains run 1.6.1.
What is MkDocs for?
MkDocs builds a static documentation website from Markdown files and one YAML configuration file, mkdocs.yml. Nearly every site we can detect uses the Material for MkDocs theme, and many host the output for free. In our October 2026 crawl, 42.2% of live MkDocs domains use a docs. or doc. hostname and 38.15% sit on GitHub Pages, so much of it is product and API documentation.
Is MkDocs free?
Yes. MkDocs is open source under a BSD licence, and Material for MkDocs is under the MIT licence. Since November 2025 the formerly paid Insiders features ship in the free Material release. Costs come from hosting, and many sites pay nothing for that either: 38.15% of the 2,427 live MkDocs domains in our crawl are on GitHub Pages. Checked 13 October 2026.
Which is better for technical documentation, Docusaurus or MkDocs?
It depends on the team. Docusaurus is React-based and published by Meta; MkDocs works from Markdown and one YAML file, and 1.x hasn't had a release since August 2024. Our crawl finds Docusaurus on 6,424 domains and MkDocs on 2,405. Their users look alike, mostly small software firms on docs. subdomains, and only 11 domains run both today.
What are the current versions of mkdocs-material?
PyPI lists Material for MkDocs 9.7.7, released on 17 July 2026; 9.7.0 in November 2025 began maintenance mode, with fixes for critical bugs and security issues but no new features. In a random sample of 38 Material sites from our crawl, 16 ran a 9.7 release and 22 an older line, two of them still on 7.x. Checked 13 October 2026.
How does MkDocs work?
You write pages in Markdown, list them in mkdocs.yml, and run mkdocs build to produce a folder of static HTML, which any web host can serve. A theme, usually Material for MkDocs, controls the look, the navigation and the search box. In our crawl, GitHub Pages hosts 38.15% of live MkDocs domains, with Amazon Web Services on 18.09%.
Is GitHub used for documentation?
Widely, as a host for docs sites. In our October 2026 crawl, 926 of the 2,427 live MkDocs domains (38.15%) are on GitHub Pages, far ahead of Vercel (5.77%) and Netlify (5.6%). A common setup keeps Markdown in a GitHub repository and publishes the built site with GitHub Pages, which is why GitHub and MkDocs show up together so often.
Does TechnologyChecker.io count every MkDocs site?
No. We count a domain when its pages carry a generator tag starting with mkdocs- and a version. Material for MkDocs writes that tag; MkDocs' built-in themes don't, so mkdocs.org itself isn't counted. Sites on ProperDocs, a fork of MkDocs 1.x, write a different tag and drop out too. So 2,405 is a floor, made up almost entirely of Material sites.
