Companies Using MediaWiki
Our October 2026 crawl finds MediaWiki, the wiki engine Wikipedia runs on, serving the home page of 6,487 domains. Below is the list of companies that use MediaWiki, with size, country, industry and the tools on each site. BSH Home Appliances runs its wiki on wiki.bsh-group.com, the City of Vienna keeps its history wiki on it, and so do Ballotpedia, Delaware's Department of Transportation and the PostgreSQL project. A wiki under a /wiki/ path on a site whose home page runs something else isn't counted, so treat the number as a floor.
It's a mixed count, and we'd rather show the mix. Of the 6,611 live domains behind this page's charts, 317 are Fandom's hosted wikis and 177 are Wikimedia's own projects. Another 402 aren't anyone's wiki: 163 redirect to a Wikipedia page, 28 copy Wikipedia and 211 belong to two templated spam-wiki networks. The note at the bottom of the page has the detail. MediaWiki ranks 3rd of the 70 tools in Documentation & Knowledge Base with 3.49%, 63 domains ahead of Docusaurus.
The installs are old, too. In a random sample of 260 domains, 183 pages announced their version and 113 ran a release mediawiki.org no longer patches.

MediaWiki Usage Statistics
MediaWiki reads 3,359 domains in June 2026, 5,165 in July, 6,097 in August, 6,428 in September and 6,487 in October. Don't read that as a wave of new wikis. The set of domains we crawl turns over every month, with dead sites dropping out and newly found ones added, and our detection widened over the summer, so most of the climb is our coverage catching up. October, up 59 domains, is the month to trust. Since we began tracking MediaWiki in March 2026, 432 domains dropped it on at least one hostname, and an October re-check found 57 of them still running it on another.

Here are some of the recognisable companies that use MediaWiki in 2026. Each served a MediaWiki page when we checked it in October 2026:
- Wikipedia: the Wikimedia Foundation's encyclopedia, the project MediaWiki was written for
- BSH Home Appliances: the German appliance maker, on wiki.bsh-group.com
- Fandom: the hosted wiki platform, on every fandom.com wiki
- wikiHow: the how-to site, on its own MediaWiki build
- Ballotpedia: the US elections encyclopedia, on ballotpedia.org
- City of Vienna: its Wien Geschichte Wiki of the city's history
- Delaware Department of Transportation: its materials and research site
- PostgreSQL: the database project's community wiki
- Heinrich Böll Foundation: the German political foundation, on its KommunalWiki
- Free Software Foundation: on its Free Software Directory
Which Countries Use MediaWiki the Most?
Which countries use MediaWiki the most? The United States, with 298 matched companies, then Germany with 174, the United Kingdom (85), the Netherlands (59), France (46) and Canada (36). Germany stands out. Add Austria and Switzerland, 21 each, and German-speaking countries reach 216 against 298 for the US. These counts cover the 1,167 MediaWiki domains we could match to a company, 18.0% of the headline, because most community, fan and hobby wikis have no company behind them.
Share of the 1,167 MediaWiki domains we matched to a company record — 18.0% of the 6,487 we detect. Top 15 countries shown, so these do not sum to 100%. Domains with no matching company record are not represented here and skew small and independent.
MediaWiki Market Share Among Documentation & Knowledge Base
What is MediaWiki's market share? 3.49% of Documentation & Knowledge Base, 3rd of the 70 tools we track there, based on our October 2026 crawl at TechnologyChecker.io. The category isn't one market: Zendesk's help centres take 61.71% and Foxit, a PDF product, 5.11%. MediaWiki is the largest wiki engine in it, and the next four rows sit close behind, led by Docusaurus on 6,424. A 63-domain lead can disappear in a single monthly refresh.
Top Competitors by Market Share
MediaWiki Customers by Company Size & Age
What size companies use MediaWiki? Small ones, mostly. 59.04% of matched companies with a known size have 1 to 10 employees and 24.39% have 11 to 50, so 83.43% have 50 staff or fewer. Only 29 have more than 1,000, and at those MediaWiki is usually one team's wiki: BSH Home Appliances on wiki.bsh-group.com, the City of Vienna's history wiki, Delaware DOT's materials and research site.
Company Size Distribution
Company Age (Founded Decade)
The largest group of matched companies was founded in the 2010s (36%), then the 2000s (27.41%) and the 1990s (13.04%). Only 11.41% date from the 2020s, and a quarter (25.2%) were founded before 2000. That fits how wikis live: once one holds years of pages, moving it becomes a project of its own.
What Industries Use MediaWiki the Most?
Software Development leads at 11.12%, then IT Services and IT Consulting (8.04%) and Technology, Information and Internet (6.65%), so 25.81% of matched companies are in tech, based on our enriched company data. Non-profits (4.57%) and civic and social organisations (4.27%) come next, ahead of research services (3.77%) and computer games (3.28%). Outside tech, no industry reaches 5%.
Software companies using MediaWiki mostly run it as a product help centre: Securepoint, CompuLab, Displayr and Zenitel all do. Public bodies on MediaWiki include the City of Vienna, Delaware's Department of Transportation and Germany's Federal Waterways Engineering and Research Institute (BAW). Non-profits using MediaWiki include Ballotpedia, the Free Software Foundation for its software directory and Instituto Socioambiental for its site on Brazil's Indigenous peoples.
MediaWiki Alternatives & Competitors
None of the four tools in this table is another wiki engine, so read it as a size check, not a shortlist. Docusaurus (6,424 domains, 3.45%) and GitBook (6,309, 3.39%) publish developer docs, Postman API Documentation (6,366, 3.42%) is mostly a DNS verification record, and Open Journal Systems (6,138, 3.3%) publishes academic journals. The wiki engines we track in the same category are much smaller: DokuWiki on 1,705 domains, Wiki.js on 745, BookStack on 405 and Atlassian Confluence on 186.
| Technology | Domains | Market Share |

Tech Stack of MediaWiki-Powered Websites
Across the 6,611 live MediaWiki domains we analysed, Cloudflare fronts 41.76%. PHP shows on 31.75%, low for software written in PHP, because we only see it when the server announces it. Google Analytics runs on 30.15% and Matomo on 6.84%, a self-hosted choice that suits people who already self-host a wiki. Quantcast (3.18%) and comScore (3.09%) are mostly Fandom's: about seven in ten of the domains carrying them are fandom.com wikis. Hosting is spread thin, with GoDaddy (4.19%) and Namecheap (2.87%) the largest.

How We Counted MediaWiki Domains
A domain counts here when the home page on one of its hostnames is built by MediaWiki: the page carries MediaWiki's body class, sets its JavaScript configuration variables, or has a generator tag naming MediaWiki. The test is precise. In a random sample of 260 live domains, 193 pages loaded, and 188 were MediaWiki; the other five were bot checks. It's also a floor, because a wiki at example.com/wiki/ under a home page built with something else isn't counted. The headline 6,487 is our category table's October figure. The charts and tables use the 6,611 domains live when we analysed them, after removing 20 domain-for-sale and gambling pages.
Precise isn't the same as "an organisation chose MediaWiki". We sorted 946 of the 6,611 into groups that need a caveat:
- 317 Fandom wikis, plus 32 on wiki.gg and 18 on Miraheze. These farms give each wiki its own subdomain, so each counts as a domain. They are real MediaWiki installs, but the host picked the software, not the community.
- 177 Wikimedia projects: the language editions of Wikipedia, Wiktionary, Wikisource and their sister sites.
- 163 redirects: domains whose home page forwards to a Wikipedia or Wikimedia page, mostly a personal or company domain pointing at an article about itself. Our crawler follows the redirect and finds Wikipedia. Two of them were in our top 50 and we removed them.
- 28 copies of Wikipedia: sites serving Wikimedia's own page build on another domain, mostly proxies.
- 211 spam-wiki domains in two networks of identical template sites: 112 "myWiki" sites on MediaWiki 1.35.2 titled "Free encyclopedia, created and edited by volunteers around the world", and 99 sites, nearly all on .win domains, on 1.42.3, whose main page still reads "If you're interested in [topic/subject]".
The last three groups, 402 domains or 6.08% of the 6,611, aren't organisations running a wiki. They are still in the counts on this page. They barely touch the company tables, because they rarely match a company, but anyone sizing the market of independent MediaWiki installs should take about 6% off the domain count. Version figures come from the generator tags in the same 260-domain sample, checked against mediawiki.org's Version lifecycle page in October 2026.
Expert Analysis: MediaWiki Growth Trends & Key Signals for Sales Teams in 2026

I spent years around crawlers before we built TechnologyChecker, and wiki software is one of the few categories where the crawl argues with its own headline. Our October 2026 crawl finds MediaWiki serving the home page of 6,487 domains. A domain counts when the page carries MediaWiki's body class, its JavaScript configuration or a generator tag naming MediaWiki, and that test is clean: in a random sample of 260 live domains, every page that loaded was MediaWiki apart from five bot checks. The hard part is who sits behind each domain. 1,167 match a company, 18.0%, which is low for a business tool and normal for a wiki engine.
What the 6,487 is made of
Before reading any chart, I sorted the 6,611 live domains we analysed. 317 are Fandom wikis, each on its own fandom.com subdomain, and wiki.gg (32) and Miraheze (18) add more of the same shape. 177 are Wikimedia's own projects. Then come 402 domains that aren't anyone's wiki: 163 redirect to a Wikipedia or Wikimedia page, 28 serve a copy of Wikipedia, and 211 belong to two spam-wiki networks built from identical templates. That leaves about 5,665 domains, roughly 86%, that look like independent installs by companies, universities, agencies, communities and individuals.
Sales signal: strip out fandom.com, wiki.gg, miraheze.org and the Wikimedia domains before you build a prospect list. What's left is self-hosted, and those are the wikis that need outside help to upgrade.
A flat line once coverage settled
The chart reads 3,359 in June, 5,165 in July, 6,097 in August, 6,428 in September and 6,487 in October. Most of that climb is ours. The set of domains we crawl turns over every month as dead sites drop out and newly found ones come in, and our detection widened over the summer. October added 59 domains. On the other side, 432 domains dropped MediaWiki on at least one hostname since we began tracking it in March 2026, and an October re-check found 57 of them still running it on another hostname.
"MediaWiki barely grows and barely shrinks. A wiki gets installed for a project, fills up with pages, and then sits on a server for a decade." - Mehmet Suleyman, CEO & Co-founder at TechnologyChecker.io
Sales signal: this is a stable installed base, not a growth market. The opening is the age of what's installed, not new adoption.
Old wikis, old versions
mediawiki.org's Version lifecycle page lists three supported branches in October 2026: 1.43, the long-term release, until December 2027, 1.45 until December 2026 and 1.46 until July 2027. Everything else gets no security fixes. In our 260-domain sample, 183 pages stated a version in their generator tag, and 113 ran an unsupported release: 81 between 1.35 and 1.44, and 32 on 1.34 or older. Only 60 ran a supported branch; 10 ran Wikimedia's own build. Across the whole crawl, 1,163 domains expose a version of 1.34 or older through a legacy JavaScript variable that later releases dropped, so that figure counts the oldest installs directly rather than estimating them.
Named examples aren't hard to find. Hurricane Electric's FAQ wiki states MediaWiki 1.23.9, the São Paulo state planning department's clipping wiki 1.16.0, and BSH Home Appliances' wiki 1.39.3, a long-term branch that is now out of support.
"Six in ten MediaWiki installs that tell you their version run one nobody patches any more. For a security or hosting seller, that's the pitch." - Mehmet Suleyman, CEO & Co-founder at TechnologyChecker.io
Sales signal: upgrade work is the clearest service to sell. mediawiki.org's own example is that a wiki on 1.38 or earlier must stop at 1.39 or 1.43 before it can reach 1.46, so old installs need staged upgrades. That's billable work, and an opening for managed hosting, security reviews or a move to another platform.
Who runs it
59.04% of matched companies with a known size have 1 to 10 employees and 24.39% have 11 to 50. Only 29 have more than 1,000. Founding years point the same way as the versions: 36% in the 2010s, 27.41% in the 2000s and just 11.41% in the 2020s. The large names are usually one team's wiki. BSH Home Appliances runs its wiki on wiki.bsh-group.com, the City of Vienna its history wiki, Delaware's Department of Transportation a materials and research site, and Germany's Federal Waterways Engineering and Research Institute (BAW) a reference wiki.
Sales signal: the buyer owns one knowledge base, often in engineering, IT or documentation. At a large company, ask for the team that runs the wiki, not the web team.
Tech-heavy, and German
Software Development (11.12%), IT Services and IT Consulting (8.04%) and Technology, Information and Internet (6.65%) add up to 25.81% of matched companies, and non-profits and civic organisations add 8.84%. The country table has a tilt. The United States leads with 298 matched companies, but Germany has 174, and with Austria and Switzerland (21 each) German-speaking countries reach 216. Several German rows are product help wikis, such as Securepoint's wiki and RA-MICRO's online help.
Sales signal: for German-language documentation tools, translation services or MediaWiki consultancies, the DACH countries are a dense pocket, and a German MediaWiki owner is often a software vendor with a help wiki.
The stack around it
Across the 6,611 domains, Cloudflare fronts 41.76%, PHP shows on 31.75% and Google Analytics runs on 30.15%. Matomo is on 6.84%, another sign of owners who run their own servers. Hosting is fragmented: GoDaddy (4.19%), Namecheap (2.87%), DreamHost (1.98%) and OVHcloud (1.94%) lead a long list. Quantcast (3.18%) and comScore (3.09%) mostly come from Fandom; about seven in ten domains carrying them are fandom.com wikis.
Sales signal: no host owns this base, so a managed MediaWiki offer wins site by site. With Cloudflare already on 41.76%, a CDN won't be the selling point.
Against other wiki engines
The competitor table on this page pairs MediaWiki with documentation tools, not wikis: Docusaurus (6,424 domains), Postman API Documentation (6,366), GitBook (6,309) and Open Journal Systems (6,138). The wiki engines we track in the same category are smaller. DokuWiki is on 1,705 domains, Wiki.js on 745, BookStack on 405, Atlassian Confluence on 186 and XWiki on 73. Together that's 3,114, under half of MediaWiki's 6,487.
Sales signal: if you sell a newer wiki or knowledge base, MediaWiki's ageing installs are the largest pool of potential switchers in this category. Lead with the upgrade burden the version data shows.
Key takeaways
1. 6,487 domains, 3rd of 70 in Documentation & Knowledge Base, 63 ahead of Docusaurus.
2. About 86% of analysed domains look like independent installs. Fandom (317), Wikimedia (177) and 402 redirects, copies and spam wikis make up most of the rest.
3. 113 of the 183 sampled pages that stated a version run an unsupported release.
4. Small, established, tech-heavy companies: 59.04% have 1 to 10 staff and 25.81% work in software or IT.
5. Germany's 174 matched companies put it second only to the United States (298).

Frequently Asked Questions
Who uses MediaWiki?
Wikipedia first: our count includes 177 Wikimedia project domains. After that come Fandom's hosted wikis (317 domains), software firms documenting their products, universities and public bodies. Named MediaWiki users on our October 2026 list include BSH Home Appliances, Ballotpedia, wikiHow, the City of Vienna, Delaware's Department of Transportation and the PostgreSQL project. 59.04% of matched companies have 10 or fewer staff.
How many customers does MediaWiki have?
Our October 2026 crawl finds MediaWiki on the home page of 6,487 domains, and 1,167 match a company. That isn't 6,487 customers. Of the 6,611 domains we analysed, Fandom's wikis are 317 and Wikimedia's projects 177, and 402 more are redirects to Wikipedia, copies of it or spam wikis. Wikis under a /wiki/ path on another platform's site aren't counted.
What is MediaWiki's market share?
3.49% of Documentation & Knowledge Base, 3rd of the 70 tools we track there, on 6,487 domains in October 2026. Zendesk's help centres (61.71%) and Foxit (5.11%) are above it, and Docusaurus is 63 domains behind with 6,424, so the rank can change month to month. Among wiki engines alone, MediaWiki is more than twice DokuWiki, Wiki.js, BookStack and Confluence combined.
What are the best alternatives to MediaWiki?
Among self-hosted wiki engines we track, DokuWiki is the largest at 1,705 domains in our October 2026 category table, then Wiki.js (745), BookStack (405) and XWiki (73). Teams that want hosting and permissions handled for them usually look at Atlassian Confluence (186 public domains) or Notion. If you want MediaWiki without running a server, Fandom, Miraheze and wiki.gg host it.
Which countries use MediaWiki the most?
The United States, with 298 matched companies, then Germany (174), the United Kingdom (85), the Netherlands (59), France (46) and Canada (36). Add Austria and Switzerland, 21 each, and German-speaking countries reach 216. These counts cover the 1,167 MediaWiki domains we matched to a company, 18.0% of the total, because most community and fan wikis have no company behind them.
What size companies use MediaWiki?
Mostly small ones. 59.04% of matched companies with a known size have 1 to 10 employees and 24.39% have 11 to 50, so 83.43% have 50 staff or fewer. Only 29 have more than 1,000. At those, MediaWiki is usually one team's wiki on a subdomain, such as BSH Home Appliances' wiki.bsh-group.com or the City of Vienna's history wiki.
How old are companies that use MediaWiki?
Among matched companies with a known founding year, 36% were founded in the 2010s, 27.41% in the 2000s and 13.04% in the 1990s. Only 11.41% date from the 2020s, and 25.2% were founded before 2000. It's an established base, and the wikis match it: in our version sample, most installs that state their version run a release that no longer gets security fixes.
What is the ideal customer profile for MediaWiki?
A small software, IT or research organisation founded in the 2000s or 2010s, based in the United States or German-speaking Europe, running a product or internal knowledge base on a wiki subdomain. It probably self-hosts on PHP behind Cloudflare and hasn't upgraded in a while: 113 of 183 wikis in our sample that stated a version ran an unsupported release.
What is MediaWiki used for?
Mostly knowledge bases and community wikis. In our October 2026 data it runs encyclopedias (Wikipedia, Ballotpedia), product help (Securepoint, CompuLab, Displayr), internal policy wikis (the University of Nebraska Medical Center, the Berkeley Student Cooperative) and game wikis on Fandom and wiki.gg. mediawiki.org describes it as free, server-based wiki software that uses PHP and a database such as MySQL.
Does MediaWiki cost money?
No. mediawiki.org describes MediaWiki as free wiki software under the GNU General Public License. The costs are hosting and upkeep: a PHP server, a database and regular upgrades, which is where many installs fall behind. Wiki farms on mediawiki.org's hosting list, such as Fandom (free with ads) and Miraheze (free, no ads), remove the server work, and paid managed hosts exist too.
What websites use MediaWiki?
Wikipedia and its sister projects, 177 domains in our count, plus 317 Fandom wikis. Other well-known MediaWiki sites we loaded in October 2026 include wikiHow, Ballotpedia, the Arch Linux and Gentoo wikis, the PostgreSQL wiki, the Free Software Foundation's software directory and the City of Vienna's history wiki. In total our crawl finds MediaWiki on the home page of 6,487 domains.
Is MediaWiki the same as Wikipedia?
No. Wikipedia is a website; MediaWiki is the software it runs on, and anyone can install it. Wikimedia's projects are 177 of the 6,611 MediaWiki domains we analysed, under 3%. The rest are company knowledge bases, community wikis and farms such as Fandom. Some are neither: 163 domains only redirect to a Wikipedia page, so our crawler lands on Wikipedia.
Is wiki.gg MediaWiki?
Yes. mediawiki.org's list of MediaWiki hosting services describes wiki.gg as a wiki farm for video games, free with ads for unregistered users, where new wikis go through an application. Our October 2026 crawl counts 32 wiki.gg domains running MediaWiki, because each wiki gets its own subdomain, against 317 on Fandom and 18 on Miraheze.
Where can I find free MediaWiki hosting?
mediawiki.org's hosting list names three free wiki farms: Fandom (free with ads, no custom domain), Miraheze (a non-profit, free with no ads, own domain or subdomain) and wiki.gg (games, by application). In our October 2026 crawl Fandom carries 317 MediaWiki domains, wiki.gg 32 and Miraheze 18. Self-hosting is free as well, but then the server and upgrades are yours.
Is MediaWiki reliable?
The software is: it runs Wikipedia. Installs are another matter. In a random sample of 260 MediaWiki domains from our October 2026 crawl, 183 stated their version, and 113 of those ran a release mediawiki.org no longer patches with security fixes. Only 60 ran a supported branch (1.43, 1.45 or 1.46), and 10 ran Wikimedia's own build.
