Companies Using Open Journal Systems
Our October 2026 crawl finds Open Journal Systems on 6,138 domains, and almost every one is a journal portal: a university, society or publisher putting its journals online with PKP's free software. Below is the list of companies that use Open Journal Systems, with size, country, industry and stack. It includes the University of Ghana, Universiti Utara Malaysia, Mexico's Instituto Nacional de Antropología e Historia, PUC-Campinas and Indonesia's Audit Board. We count domains, not journals. One portal can hold dozens of titles, and PKP counts 58,221 journals that published at least five items with OJS in 2025.
This isn't a US-first list. Indonesia leads with 433 matched organisations, and 817 OJS domains sit on Indonesian .ac.id university addresses. Brazil, Colombia, Argentina, Peru and Ecuador together add 435, slightly more than Indonesia. Open Journal Systems ranks 7th of the 70 tools in Documentation & Knowledge Base with 3.3%, though nothing else in that category publishes journals. Most portals keep up with PKP: 82.8% of the 5,781 that state a version run a supported one.

Open Journal Systems Usage Statistics
Open Journal Systems reads 3,146 domains in June 2026, 4,278 in July, 5,253 in August, 6,077 in September and 6,138 in October. That curve is mostly ours, not PKP's. The set of domains we crawl turns over every month, with dead sites dropping out and newly found ones added, and our detection widened over the summer. October, up 61 domains, is the first month we'd call steady. Since March 2026, 217 domains dropped OJS on at least one hostname, and 26 of those still run it on another.

Which Countries Use Open Journal Systems the Most?
Which countries use Open Journal Systems the most? Indonesia, with 433 matched organisations, then Brazil (279), India (148) and the United States (137). Pakistan (71) and Nigeria (36) both make the top 12. Latin America is the bigger story: Brazil, Colombia (49), Argentina (41), Peru (39) and Ecuador (27) add up to 435, two more than Indonesia. These counts cover the 2,344 OJS domains we matched to an organisation, 38.2% of the total.
Share of the 2,344 Open Journal Systems domains we matched to a company record — 38.2% of the 6,138 we detect. Top 15 countries shown, so these do not sum to 100%. Domains with no matching company record are not represented here and skew small and independent.
Open Journal Systems Market Share Among Documentation & Knowledge Base
What is Open Journal Systems' market share? 3.3% of Documentation & Knowledge Base, 7th of the 70 tools we track there, on 6,138 domains in our October 2026 crawl at TechnologyChecker.io. It's an awkward fit. Zendesk's help centres hold 61.71% of the category and nothing else in it publishes peer-reviewed journals, so the share says more about the category than about OJS. Inline Manual is only 48 domains behind (6,090), so the rank can slip on any refresh.
Top Competitors by Market Share
Open Journal Systems Customers by Company Size & Age
What size organisations use Open Journal Systems? Both ends. 44.68% of matched organisations with a known size have 1 to 10 employees, many of them small publishers and single journals with their own LinkedIn page, yet 228 have more than 1,000 staff (10.22%). LinkedIn's size field is loose for universities: the University of Cape Coast is listed at 1 to 10. Read the small end as journals and the large end as institutions.
Company Size Distribution
Company Age (Founded Decade)
30.6% of matched organisations were founded before 1990, and 11.37% before 1960, which is what a list of universities looks like. The 2010s are still the largest single decade at 25.39%, and 13.88% date from the 2020s, the newer publishers and journals that start on OJS from day one.
What Industries Use Open Journal Systems the Most?
Higher Education leads at 34.1%, and with Education Administration Programs (5.01%), Education (4.68%) and Education Management (1.19%) the education cluster is 44.98% of matched organisations, based on our enriched company data. Publishers come second: Book and Periodical Publishing is 14.71% and Periodical Publishing 2.91%, so 17.62% together. Research Services (7.93%) and non-profits (2.87%) follow.
Universities using Open Journal Systems usually run one portal for all their journals on a revistas., periodicos. or journals. subdomain, like the University of Ghana, Bahir Dar University and PUC-Campinas. Government agencies on Open Journal Systems include Indonesia's tax directorate, which publishes Scientax, Indonesia's Audit Board and Rio de Janeiro's military fire brigade, whose journal is Revista Científica Soldado do Fogo. Hospitals using OJS include Brazil's Grupo Hospitalar Conceição and CEJAM.
Open Journal Systems Alternatives & Competitors
Nothing in this table publishes journals, so treat it as a size check. MediaWiki (6,487 domains, 3.49%), Docusaurus (6,424, 3.45%) and GitBook (6,309, 3.39%) are wiki and documentation tools, and MkDocs (2,405, 1.29%) builds docs sites from Markdown. The closest relative we track is repository software: DSpace runs on 632 domains in the same category. Journal-management rivals such as Scholastica aren't in our detection set yet.

Expert Analysis: Open Journal Systems Growth Trends & Key Signals for Sales Teams in 2026

With Open Journal Systems I can tell you almost exactly what each detected site is: a journal, or a portal of journals. Our October 2026 crawl counts 6,138 domains. A domain counts when it sets OJS's session cookie, OJSSID, or carries a generator tag naming Open Journal Systems, and the check holds up. In a random sample of 120 live domains, 104 of the 109 pages that loaded carried an OJS marker; the other five were a bot check, a hacked page and three journals on customised platforms. 2,344 domains match an organisation, 38.2%.
Domains, portals and journals
One domain is often many journals. All 50 rows in our top list run OJS on a subdomain, usually revistas., periodicos. or journals., and a single portal can hold dozens of titles. PKP's own usage page counts 58,221 journals that published five or more items with OJS in 2025. Our 6,138 is a count of the sites those journals live on. No host or fleet dominates: the most domains any one organisation holds is 10, São Paulo State University's faculty subdomains, and our title filter removed only 33 for-sale and gambling pages.
Sales signal: sell per portal, not per journal. One library or research office usually runs every journal on a domain, so one contact can open dozens of titles.
Coverage climbed, the base didn't
The chart reads 3,146 in June, 4,278 in July, 5,253 in August, 6,077 in September and 6,138 in October. The set of domains we crawl turns over every month, with dead sites dropping out and new ones added, and our detection widened over the summer; together they explain most of that line. October's 61-domain gain is the first month I'd read as real. 217 domains dropped OJS on at least one hostname since March 2026, and 26 of them still run it on another hostname, so fewer than 200 left.
"A journal portal is a ten-year decision. Fewer than 200 of 6,138 OJS domains have left it since March, and we can't yet tell a platform switch from a journal that closed." - Mehmet Suleyman, CEO & Co-founder at TechnologyChecker.io
Sales signal: treat OJS as a fixed installed base. New business comes from services on top of it, such as hosting, upgrades, DOI registration and indexing support, not from a wave of new adopters.
Most portals keep up with PKP
Version data is unusually complete here: 5,781 domains state a version, 94.6% of the 6,114 we saw in the last 75 days. PKP's releases page lists three supported versions in October 2026: 3.5, the long-term release, until Q2 2029, and 3.4 and 3.3 until Q2 2027. 4,786 domains, 82.8%, run one of them. 3.3 alone has 2,652, and 901 already run 3.5. The other 995 run an end-of-life version: 367 on 3.2, 374 on 3.1, 24 on 3.0 and 230 still on OJS 2.x. Named examples include the University of Ghana's portal on 3.2.1 and the Federal University of Pará's on 2.4.8.
"Nearly two in three OJS portals that state a version need an upgrade within a year: 2,652 sit on 3.3 ahead of PKP's 2027 end date, and 995 are already past theirs." - Mehmet Suleyman, CEO & Co-founder at TechnologyChecker.io
Sales signal: that's a dated, countable upgrade pipeline for OJS hosts and service firms. The 230 portals on 2.x are the hardest jobs and the most urgent.
Universities first, then publishers
Higher Education is 34.1% of matched organisations, and the wider education cluster 44.98%. Publishing is second at 17.62% (Book and Periodical Publishing plus Periodical Publishing), then Research Services at 7.93%. Size splits the same two ways: 44.68% have 1 to 10 employees, the small publishers and single journals, while 228 have more than 1,000. Founding years agree. 30.6% were founded before 1990 and 11.37% before 1960.
Sales signal: there are two buyers. At a university the library or research office runs the portal and decides for every journal on it. Independent publishers are small, price-sensitive and more likely to rent cheap hosting.
Indonesia and Latin America
Indonesia leads with 433 matched organisations, and the addresses say the same thing: 817 OJS domains sit on .ac.id addresses, 13.0% of the set, more than all other .edu and .ac domains worldwide combined (684). Brazil is second with 279, then India (148) and the United States (137). Group the Latin American countries and they pass Indonesia: Brazil, Colombia, Argentina, Peru and Ecuador add up to 435. Pakistan (71) and Nigeria (36) both make the top 12.
Sales signal: for anyone selling into academic publishing, the OJS list is a ready map of Indonesian, Brazilian and Spanish-speaking Latin American universities. Outreach in Spanish, Portuguese and Indonesian will reach more of it than English.
The stack around it
PHP shows on 44.0% of the 6,286 live domains we analysed and Google Analytics on 38.48%. jsDelivr (27.62%) and cdnjs (27.0%) serve theme and library files. WordPress appears on 23.18%, but only 5 of those 1,457 domains run it on the OJS host; it's the university's main site on another hostname. Hostinger is the one host that stands out: it serves the journal itself on 782 domains, 12.4% of the set, and 629 of the 906 domains with Hostinger anywhere sit outside .edu and .ac addresses. GoDaddy follows at 5.11%.
Sales signal: Hostinger's journals are the independent end of the market, publishers who picked cheap shared hosting. They're the natural audience for managed OJS hosting.
What OJS costs
The software is free: PKP releases it under the GNU General Public License version 3. The cost is hosting and upkeep. OpenJournalSystems.com, one commercial host, lists plans at $500 a year for a single journal and $600 or $900 for multi-journal installs, checked in October 2026.
Sales signal: price anchors are low. A managed offer competes with a $500-a-year plan and with free self-hosting on a university server, so sell the upgrade and the support, not the server.
Key takeaways
1. 6,138 domains, 7th of 70 in Documentation & Knowledge Base, though nothing else there publishes journals.
2. A clean count: 104 of 109 loaded sample pages carried an OJS marker, and no fleet or single host dominates.
3. Indonesia leads with 433 matched organisations; Latin America together has 435.
4. 82.8% of versioned portals run a supported release, but 2,652 on 3.3 face PKP's Q2 2027 end date.
5. Two buyers: universities (44.98% in education) and small publishers on shared hosting.

Frequently Asked Questions
Who uses Open Journal Systems?
Universities, mostly, plus scholarly societies, independent publishers and some government agencies. Higher Education is 34.1% of matched organisations and publishing 17.62%. Named OJS users on our October 2026 list include the University of Ghana, Universiti Utara Malaysia, PUC-Campinas, Mexico's INAH, the Indian Council of Agricultural Research and Indonesia's Audit Board. Indonesia has the most matched organisations, 433.
How many customers does Open Journal Systems have?
Our October 2026 crawl finds OJS on 6,138 domains, and 2,344 match an organisation. A domain isn't a journal: a university portal can host dozens of titles on one subdomain. PKP, which makes OJS, counts 58,221 journals that published five or more items with it in 2025. Since March 2026, 217 domains dropped OJS on a hostname, and 26 of those still run it elsewhere.
What is Open Journal Systems's market share?
3.3% of our Documentation & Knowledge Base category, 7th of 70 tools, on 6,138 domains in October 2026. Read it with care: Zendesk's help centres hold 61.71% of that category, and nothing else in it publishes journals. Inline Manual is 48 domains behind, so the rank can move. Journal-management rivals such as Scholastica aren't in our detection set, so there's no like-for-like share.
What are the best alternatives to Open Journal Systems?
For journal management, the usual alternatives are hosted editorial platforms such as Scholastica, ScholarOne and Editorial Manager. We don't detect those yet, so we can't count them. Repository software solves a different problem; DSpace runs on 632 domains in our category table. Few OJS sites leave: 191 domains dropped it entirely between March and October 2026, out of 6,138.
Which countries use Open Journal Systems the most?
Indonesia, with 433 matched organisations, then Brazil (279), India (148), the United States (137) and Pakistan (71). Latin America together passes Indonesia: Brazil, Colombia, Argentina, Peru and Ecuador add up to 435. By address, 817 OJS domains sit on Indonesian .ac.id university domains, 13.0% of the 6,286 we analysed. These counts come from our October 2026 crawl.
What size companies use Open Journal Systems?
Both small and very large. 44.68% of matched organisations with a known size have 1 to 10 employees, often single journals or small publishers with their own LinkedIn page. 228, or 10.22%, have more than 1,000 staff, mostly universities. LinkedIn sizes are loose for universities, so the University of Cape Coast shows as 1 to 10. Read the small end as journals.
How old are companies that use Open Journal Systems?
Older than most software customers. Among matched organisations with a known founding year, 30.6% were founded before 1990 and 11.37% before 1960, the universities and learned societies. The 2010s are the largest single decade at 25.39%, and 13.88% date from the 2020s, the newer publishers and journals that started on OJS from day one.
What is the ideal customer profile for Open Journal Systems?
A university or research institution in Indonesia, Brazil, Spanish-speaking Latin America, India or Pakistan, running a journal portal on a revistas., periodicos. or journals. subdomain while its main site runs WordPress. Smaller buyers are independent publishers on shared hosting, often Hostinger, which serves the journal itself on 782 domains. Most run OJS 3.3.
What is an open journal system?
Open Journal Systems (OJS) is the Public Knowledge Project's software for running scholarly journals online, covering submission, peer review and production in one place. PKP says each installation can run one or many journals, so a university often hosts all its titles on one portal. Our October 2026 crawl finds OJS on 6,138 domains, most of them university journal portals.
Is PKP software free to use?
Yes. PKP releases Open Journal Systems under the GNU General Public License version 3, per its download page, so the software costs nothing. You pay for hosting and upkeep. OpenJournalSystems.com, one commercial host, lists plans at $500 a year for a single journal and $600 or $900 for multi-journal installs, and PKP's own site invites you to install OJS on your own server. Checked October 2026.
What is the latest version of OJS?
PKP's download page lists OJS 3.5 as the current long-term release (3.5.0-5, June 2026), alongside 3.4 (3.4.0-11) and 3.3 LTS (3.3.0-23). In our October 2026 crawl, 901 domains already run 3.5, 1,233 run 3.4 and 2,652 run 3.3, out of 5,781 that state a version. Another 995 run versions PKP no longer supports.
Is OJS 3.3 still supported?
Yes, for now. PKP's releases page lists 3.3 as a long-term release supported until Q2 2027, the same end date as 3.4, while 3.5 runs to Q2 2029. 3.2 reached end of life in Q1 2023. In our October 2026 crawl, 2,652 domains run 3.3, the most of any version, so the largest upgrade wave is still ahead.
What does OJS mean?
OJS stands for Open Journal Systems, the open-source journal publishing software made by the Public Knowledge Project at Simon Fraser University. In web addresses you'll often see it directly, as in ojs.aiou.edu.pk or ojs.upf.br. Our crawl recognises an OJS site by its OJSSID session cookie or its generator tag, and finds 6,138 such domains in October 2026.
How to start a journal publication?
On the software side, most journals in our data start where the institution already is: a free OJS install on a university subdomain, or cheap shared hosting for independent publishers. 82.8% of the 5,781 OJS domains that state a version run one PKP supports, and new installs should start on 3.5, the current long-term release. Editorial policy, ISSNs and indexing come after.
