Companies Using Google Font API
We detect the Google Font API on 10,997,995 domains, which makes it the most widely deployed technology on this site and gives it 56.03% of the Font Services category. Nothing else on the web we measure comes close to that reach.
One thing decides how to read every number below: we detect the request, not the typeface. A site that downloads the same fonts and serves them from its own origin looks identical to a site using no web fonts at all. So this is a count of sites that fetch fonts from Google's servers, and the interesting movement in it is sites choosing to stop.

Google Font API Usage Statistics
Our current crawl window covers June to August 2026: 9,713,202 → 11,127,099 → 10,997,995. The June to July rise is 14.6% and lands in the same window our corpus expanded, so read it as coverage. The July to August step is the one worth having, and it is down about 129,000 domains. Total domains ever seen kept climbing across all three months (9.73M → 11.79M → 12.15M) while active fell, which is churn opening a gap. 1,589,788 domains have dropped it since we began tracking in March 2026.

ir.aboutamazon.com, Accenture through investor.accenture.com, Deloitte through my.deloitte.com, Bank of America through locators.bankofamerica.com, Disney through emplois.disneycareers.com, Veterans Affairs through yourit.va.gov. These are investor relations sites, careers portals, store locators and internal tools, the properties a large organisation builds quickly or outsources. The flagship domain has usually been through a performance and privacy review and self-hosts its fonts. The satellite has not. That pattern, rather than the brand name, is the useful signal here.Which Countries Use Google Font API the Most?
The United States is 27.89% of the enriched companies we can place, then the United Kingdom 7.84%, Brazil 5.73%, India 5.60% and France 4.75%. Germany is eleventh at 3.28%, behind the Netherlands and Spain, which is not where Europe's largest economy normally sits in a web technology table. That gap is the most interesting number on this page and it is covered below.
Share of the 6,488,327 Google Font API domains we matched to a company record — 59.0% of the 10,997,995 we detect. Top 15 countries shown, so these do not sum to 100%. Domains with no matching company record are not represented here and skew small and independent.
Google Font API Market Share Among Font Services
Google Fonts holds 56.03% of the Font Services category, first of 24. The runner-up, Font Awesome at 29.66%, is an icon set rather than a typeface service, as are Twemoji, Bootstrap Icons and Ionicons. Counting only actual webfont services, Google holds roughly 88% of that market, Adobe Fonts about 10%, and nobody else reaches 3%. This is the least contested position we publish.
Top Competitors by Market Share
Google Font API Customers by Company Size & Age
66.07% of the companies we can size have 10 employees or fewer and 22.35% have 11 to 50. A free CDN link with no account, no key and no bill has no reason to skew large, and it does not. The 9,544 companies above 10,000 employees are a rounding error against a base of 5.9 million sized companies, and most of them appear through a secondary property rather than a main site.
Company Size Distribution
Company Age (Founded Decade)
39.13% were founded in the 2010s, 20.43% in the 2020s and 17.77% in the 2000s. That spread is unusually even, and evenness is the finding: this is not a cohort, it is a default. Google Fonts arrived in 2010 and became the standard way to load a typeface, so it accumulated across every generation of company that has built a website since.
What Industries Use Google Font API the Most?
There is no dominant vertical, which is the point. Construction leads at 4.18%, then IT Services and IT Consulting 3.85%, Retail 3.70%, Business Consulting 3.23% and Real Estate 3.16%. Nothing reaches 5%.
Compare that to a typical category leader, where the top industry usually takes 10% to 30% of the base. A flat distribution across every sector is what a universal default looks like when it is measured. The ordering here says more about which industries have the most small websites than about who chooses Google Fonts.
Google Font API Alternatives & Competitors
Only Adobe Fonts at 1,253,137 domains is a genuine competitor; the other large entries in this category are icon and emoji sets that happen to be delivered as fonts. Bunny Fonts, at 160,960 domains, matters more than its size suggests: it is a drop-in mirror of the Google Fonts API hosted in the EU, built specifically to remove the Google request. Its share of this market is under 1%.
| Technology | Domains | Market Share |
|---|---|---|
| 5,822,089 | 29.66% | |

Google Font API Customer Migration
1,472,079 domains dropped the Google Fonts request entirely, and every one of them is still live, carrying an average of 12.2 detected technologies. These are working websites that removed one request. Where did they go? 21.9% now run Adobe Fonts, against a 3.59% rate among domains still running Google Fonts, so that is roughly 6 times the base rate and it survives a direction test. Bunny Fonts took 0.66% against a 0.51% base rate, which is no signal at all. That leaves more than three quarters going somewhere we cannot see, and there is only one such place: the site's own origin.

Expert Analysis: Google Font API Growth Trends & Key Signals for Sales Teams in 2026

I run the crawling infrastructure at TechnologyChecker, after five years on Google's Search team working on crawling and indexing. The Google Font API is the largest thing our crawler sees: 10,997,995 active domains and 6,488,327 enriched companies as of our August 2026 crawl, 56.03% of its category. It is also the technology where the measurement matters most, because what we detect and what people assume we detect are two different things.
1. We detect the request, not the typeface
Our three signals all require the page to reach out to Google: a link to fonts.googleapis.com or fonts.gstatic.com, a WebFonts global, or a script from a Google APIs webfont path. Every family in the library is published under the SIL Open Font License, so anyone can download the files and serve them from their own origin. A site that does that is indistinguishable, to us, from a site using no web fonts at all.
So this page does not measure who uses Google's typefaces. It measures who fetches them from Google. Those were nearly the same population for a decade. They are visibly separating now, and that separation is the story.
2. Germany is missing, and a control says it is not our data
Germany is eleventh at 3.28% of the companies we can place on Google Fonts, behind the Netherlands and Spain. Europe's largest economy does not normally rank eleventh in a web technology table, so the first question is whether our corpus simply under-covers Germany.
It does not. Font Awesome is the right control: also a third-party font request from a CDN, same crawl, same enrichment, same mechanism class, different recipient. Germany is 7.50% of Font Awesome and 3.28% of Google Fonts, a factor of 2.3 on Google specifically. And Bunny Fonts, which exists only as an EU-hosted mirror of the Google Fonts API, is 6.40% German, nearly double Google's share on a base a seventieth the size.
"A country can only look small in your data for two reasons: you did not crawl it, or it left. Run the same country against a technology with the same mechanism and a different owner. If the gap survives that, it is behaviour." - David Thomson, CTO at TechnologyChecker.io
The documented cause is sitting there: on 20 January 2022 the Regional Court of Munich ordered a site operator to pay damages because embedding Google Fonts sent a visitor's IP address to Google without a legal basis, and a wave of demand letters followed. Our data shows the gap. It cannot show the causation on its own, but no other candidate explains why the gap is specific to Google among font CDNs.
3. A million and a half sites removed it, and all of them are still alive
1,472,079 domains dropped the Google Fonts request entirely and are not running it on any host. I checked whether those were dead sites, because churn at this scale usually is. They are not: 100% still carry a live detection, averaging 12.2 technologies each. These are working websites that deliberately removed one request.
Where they went is the part worth reading carefully:
- Adobe Fonts: 322,400, or 21.9%. Against a 3.59% rate among domains still running Google Fonts, that is roughly 6 times the base rate. It also passes a direction test: leaving Adobe makes a domain less likely to be on Google Fonts, not more.
- Bunny Fonts: 9,722, or 0.66%, against a 0.51% base rate. That is a ratio of 1.3 and it is not a signal. The purpose-built replacement is not where these sites went.
- Font Awesome: 7.0%, against a 34.8% base rate. Well below, which fits: a site stripping third-party requests tends to strip more than one.
That leaves more than three quarters of 1.47 million live domains on neither. There is exactly one destination that produces no detection, and it is the site's own origin. The largest movement in this market is invisible by construction, and every number on this page is bounded by that.
4. The trend line is two different things stacked
Our current-crawl series is 9,713,202 in June, 11,127,099 in July and 10,997,995 in August 2026. The June to July step is 14.6% and coincides with our corpus expanding, so it is coverage rather than adoption. The July to August step is down about 129,000 domains and is the one I would quote. Total domains ever seen rose in all three months while active fell in the last, and that widening gap is churn.
5. The big brands here are not the sites you think
38 of the 50 largest companies matched on a subdomain, not the main site. Amazon through ir.aboutamazon.com, Accenture through investor.accenture.com, Deloitte through my.deloitte.com, Bank of America through locators.bankofamerica.com, Disney through emplois.disneycareers.com, Veterans Affairs through yourit.va.gov. Investor relations sites, careers portals, locators, internal tools.
The reading is consistent and useful: the flagship domain has been through a performance and privacy review and self-hosts. The satellite property, built fast or outsourced, still links to Google. If you sell privacy tooling or performance work, that asymmetry is the opening, not the logo.
6. One thing we deliberately did not publish
There is no tech stack section on this page. At 56% of the domains we crawl, "what else do these sites run" returns the most common technologies on the web, which tells you about the web and nothing about Google Fonts. A co-occurrence table is only informative when the base is a choice. Here it is close to a census.
Frequently Asked Questions
Who uses Google Font API?
We detect Google Font API on 10,997,995 domains, including Amazon Literary Partnership, Accenture PLC, Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu Limited. A detection means the technology is present on that domain, which for large organisations is often a single storefront or subdomain rather than a company-wide deployment. Among domains we matched to a company with a resolved industry, the most common is Construction (4.18%).
How many customers does Google Font API have?
We detect 10,997,995 domains running Google Font API across our monthly crawl of live business domains. Company data could be matched for 6,488,327 of them (59.0%), and every company-size, industry and country breakdown on this page describes that matched subset rather than the full detected base. A further 1,589,788 domains carried a Google Font API detection previously and no longer do.
What is Google Font API's market share?
Google Font API holds 56.03% of the Font Services category, ranking #1. This is a share of the domains we detect running a platform in this category — not a share of all websites, and not a share of spending — so it is not directly comparable to figures published on other denominators.
What are the best alternatives to Google Font API?
The top alternatives to Google Font API include Font Awesome (29.66% market share), Adobe Fonts (6.38% market share), Twitter Emoji (Twemoji) (4.42% market share), Bootstrap Icons (1.1% market share) — measured as a share of the domains we detect running a platform in this category.
Which countries use Google Font API the most?
United States leads with 1,713,434 matched Google Font API domains, followed by United Kingdom (481,444), Brazil (352,187), India (344,127), France (292,064). These are counts within the 6,488,327 domains we could match to a company record, not the full detected base.
What size companies use Google Font API?
The most common company size is 1-10 employees, representing 66.07% of the Google Font API domains we could match to a company record and size — a subset of 6,488,327 matched companies, not of all 10,997,995 detected domains. This is followed by 11-50 employees (22.35%) and 51-200 employees (7.4%).
How old are companies that use Google Font API?
Among the Google Font API domains we could match to a company with a known founding date, most were founded in the 2020s (20.43%), followed by the 2010s (39.13%). That matched subset is drawn from 6,488,327 companies and is not representative of all 10,997,995 detected domains. This suggests Google Font API is most popular among relatively young companies.
What is the ideal customer profile for Google Font API?
The ideal Google Font API customer is: Company Size: 1-10 employees, Location: US, UK, Brazil or India, Industry: No dominant vertical, Founded: 2010-2019, Company Age: ~5-25 years old — based on our analysis of 6,488,327 enriched companies at TechnologyChecker.io.
How many websites use Google Fonts?
We detect the Google Font API on 10,997,995 active domains as of our August 2026 crawl, which is 56.03% of the Font Services category and the largest footprint of any technology we track. Read it as a count of sites that fetch fonts from Google's servers. A site that downloads the same typefaces and serves them from its own origin is invisible to this method, so the true number of sites using Google's fonts is higher and unmeasurable.
Is Google Fonts GDPR compliant?
Using the hosted API is legally contested in the EU. On 20 January 2022 the Regional Court of Munich (case 3 O 17493/20) ordered a website operator to pay a visitor 100 euros because embedding Google Fonts passed the visitor's IP address to Google without a legal basis. The court's reasoning was that the fonts can be served locally, so there was no legitimate interest in the transfer. Self-hosting the font files, or using an EU-hosted mirror, removes the transfer entirely. This is not legal advice.
Does our data show German sites avoiding Google Fonts?
Yes, clearly. Germany is 3.28% of the companies we can place on Google Fonts and 7.50% on Font Awesome, which is also a third-party CDN font request but not a Google one. Same crawl, same enrichment, same mechanism, and Germany is 2.3 times under-represented on Google specifically. Bunny Fonts, the EU-hosted drop-in replacement, is 6.40% German. We can show the gap; we cannot show from crawl data alone that the court rulings caused it, though they are the obvious candidate.
What do sites switch to when they drop Google Fonts?
Mostly nothing we can see, which means self-hosting. Of the 1,472,079 domains that dropped the request entirely, all of them still live and averaging 12.2 detected technologies, 21.9% now run Adobe Fonts (about 6 times the 3.59% rate among sites still on Google Fonts) and only 0.66% run Bunny Fonts (against a 0.51% base rate, so no real signal). More than three quarters went to neither. Self-hosted fonts leave no third-party request, so they leave no detection.
Is Google Fonts free?
Yes, entirely. There is no account, no API key and no bill. Nearly every family is published under the SIL Open Font License, which allows commercial use, bundling and self-hosting. That is why the footprint is so large and why the company-size distribution skews small: two thirds of the companies we can size have 10 employees or fewer.
How many fonts does Google Fonts have?
Roughly 1,900 families as of mid-2026, up from about 18 at launch in 2010. The catalogue grows every month and includes variable fonts and extensive non-Latin coverage. None of that is measurable from a crawl; our number counts domains, not typefaces.
What size companies use Google Fonts?
66.07% of the 5.9 million companies we could size have 10 employees or fewer and 22.35% have 11 to 50. Only 9,544 have more than 10,000 employees, and most of those appear through a secondary property: Amazon via ir.aboutamazon.com, Deloitte via my.deloitte.com, Bank of America via locators.bankofamerica.com.
Which countries use Google Fonts the most?
The United States at 27.89% of enriched companies, then the United Kingdom (7.84%), Brazil (5.73%), India (5.60%), France (4.75%), Spain (4.00%) and the Netherlands (3.98%). Germany is eleventh at 3.28%, which is a long way below where it usually sits in web technology data and is the most interesting number in this table.
What industries use Google Fonts?
All of them, roughly evenly. Construction leads at 4.18%, then IT Services and IT Consulting (3.85%), Retail (3.70%), Business Consulting (3.23%) and Real Estate (3.16%). Nothing reaches 5%. A category leader normally takes 10% to 30% in its top industry; a flat distribution is what a universal default looks like.
What are the best alternatives to Google Fonts?
Self-hosting is the alternative most sites actually pick, and it is also the fastest: it removes a DNS lookup, a TLS handshake and a third-party request. Tools like Fontsource package the same open-source families for local serving. Bunny Fonts (160,960 domains) mirrors the Google Fonts API on EU servers, so it is a one-line host swap that keeps the CDN but changes who receives the visitor's IP. Adobe Fonts (1,253,137 domains) is the main commercial option and comes bundled with several site builders.
How old are companies that use Google Fonts?
39.13% were founded in the 2010s, 20.43% in the 2020s, 17.77% in the 2000s and 9.26% in the 1990s. The spread is unusually even, and that evenness is the finding: this is a default that accumulated across every generation of company that has built a website since 2010, not a cohort that adopted it together.
Is Google Fonts slow?
It costs an extra DNS lookup and TLS handshake to a host that is not yours, and modern browsers no longer share a cross-site font cache, so the old argument that a visitor probably has the file already from another site no longer holds. That is why self-hosting is now the standard performance recommendation as well as the standard privacy one, and it is consistent with what we see: over 1.47 million live domains have removed the request.
How do you detect Google Fonts?
Three signals: a <link> whose href points at fonts.googleapis.com, fonts.google.com or fonts.gstatic.com; a WebFonts JavaScript global; and a script loaded from a Google APIs webfont path. All three require the page our crawler fetched to actually reach out to Google. None of them can see a font file served from the site's own domain.
What is the ideal customer profile for Google Fonts?
