Companies Using Twitter Emoji (Twemoji)
Most sites in this count never chose Twemoji. WordPress core chose it for them. WordPress prints a small emoji loader on every page unless someone turns it off, and when the browser can't draw a recent emoji, the loader fetches wp-emoji-release.min.js, a file WordPress builds from Twemoji's script and its own. Our October 2026 crawl finds Twemoji on 820,555 domains, and 99.65% of them run WordPress. So this list of companies that use Twitter Emoji (Twemoji) is a list of WordPress sites that kept the core emoji script switched on, with size, country, industry and stack for the 501,207 we matched to a company. It includes Samsung's global newsroom, Booking Holdings, Capgemini's investor site, Hallmark's ideas blog and Boston University.
Twemoji is Twitter's open-source emoji set, first released in November 2014. Emojipedia's 2025 timeline says Twitter's own set has had no major update since 2023, and a fork led by former Twitter staff now carries it. It ranks 4th of the 25 technologies we track in Font Services, with 4.0% of the category, though it competes with nothing in that table: it draws emoji, and the others serve fonts and icons. One caveat matters more than the rest. Whether the loader fires in our crawl depends on the WordPress release, so the 820,555 is a slice of WordPress, not all of it.

Twitter Emoji (Twemoji) Usage Statistics
Our crawl reads 837,814 Twemoji domains in June 2026, 870,249 in July, 868,571 in August, 862,682 in September and 820,555 in October. Counts aren't a like-for-like series: the set of domains we crawl turns over every month, with dead sites dropping out and newly found ones added, and our detection signals widen over time. The October step, 42,127 fewer domains, also has a WordPress cause, since a core upgrade can change whether the loader fetches Twemoji at all. Since we began tracking it in March 2026, 288,934 domains have dropped it on at least one hostname, and about one in eleven still load it on another.

Which Countries Use Twitter Emoji (Twemoji) the Most?
Which countries use Twemoji the most? The United States, with 78,608 matched companies, then Germany (39,680), the United Kingdom (37,778), Spain (27,891), Brazil (27,460) and Italy (27,147). Europe is the bigger block, though. The eight European countries in our top 15 hold 199,336 companies, about 2.5 times the US figure. Read it as a map of WordPress sites with default settings rather than of emoji fans. These counts cover the domains we matched to a company.
Share of the 501,207 Twitter Emoji (Twemoji) domains we matched to a company record — 61.1% of the 820,555 we detect. Top 15 countries shown, so these do not sum to 100%. Domains with no matching company record are not represented here and skew small and independent.
Twitter Emoji (Twemoji) Market Share Among Font Services
What is Twemoji's market share? 4.0% of Font Services, 4th of the 25 technologies we track there, based on our live crawl at TechnologyChecker.io. Nobody picked it over the rows above it. The Google Font API (56.54%) serves typefaces, Font Awesome (29.64%) serves icons, and Twemoji draws emoji because WordPress ships it. Font Awesome's 6,093,539 domains are 7.4 times Twemoji's 820,555, which in turn is 3.4 times Bootstrap Icons' 237,984.

Twitter Emoji (Twemoji) Customers by Company Size & Age
What size companies use Twemoji? Mostly very small ones. 69.23% of matched companies with a known size have 1 to 10 employees and 20.87% have 11 to 50, so 90.1% have 50 staff or fewer. 3,276 have more than 1,000. At those it usually sits on a WordPress side site rather than the main storefront: Samsung's newsroom, Capgemini's investor pages, STMicroelectronics' newsroom, Hallmark's ideas blog.
Company Size Distribution
Company Age (Founded Decade)
The largest group of matched companies was founded in the 2010s (43.16%), then the 2000s (19.68%) and the 2020s (14%). Older organisations aren't rare: 3.46% predate 1960, a tail full of universities. The University of Pittsburgh (1787) runs it on its admissions site, the University of Illinois (1867) on illinois.edu and Boston University (1869) on bu.edu.
What Industries Use Twitter Emoji (Twemoji) the Most?
Construction leads at 4.99%, followed by Business Consulting and Services (3.82%), IT Services and IT Consulting (3.42%), Advertising Services (3.39%) and Retail (3.18%), based on our enriched company data. The top ten industries add up to 29.61% and none reaches 5%. It reads like a directory of small-business websites: contractors, consultants, agencies, shops, clinics and restaurants.
Universities using Twemoji are the most visible group in our list: Boston University, the University of Illinois, Washington State University, Carnegie Mellon's Robotics Institute and the University of Hong Kong's calendar all load WordPress's emoji script. Banks using Twemoji include Security Bank in the Philippines and Davivienda on its investor-relations site. Corporate newsrooms on Twemoji turn up again and again in our list: Samsung, STMicroelectronics and SK Telecom all run theirs on WordPress.
Twitter Emoji (Twemoji) Alternatives & Competitors
Read this table as neighbours rather than rivals. The Google Font API, Font Awesome, Adobe Fonts and Bootstrap Icons deliver typefaces and icons, and a WordPress site often loads several of them next to Twemoji. The real alternative is the one WordPress falls back to when the loader is switched off: the operating system's own emoji font. Perfmatters' documentation describes disabling the script as a one-click setting and notes that emoji still display, drawn by the operating system instead.

How We Count Twemoji Websites
A domain counts when a page exposes Twemoji's JavaScript object or loads a twemoji script file. On WordPress, which 99.65% of these domains run, that happens through core's emoji loader: it tests whether the browser can draw a handful of emoji and, if not, loads wp-emoji-release.min.js, which WordPress builds from Twemoji's script and its own. Our crawler's browser fails that test often enough for the library to load, so a site is counted when its owner left the script on. Plugins that disable it, and sites that strip it in their theme, are invisible to this rule.
The test changes with the WordPress release, and so does the chance that we count a site. Among WordPress sites whose core version we could read, 19.3% of those on 6.8 (324 of 1,679) loaded Twemoji in our crawl, against 0.26% of those on 7.1 (67 of 25,788), with 6.2 to 6.7 between 1.1% and 4.8%. So the 820,555 domains are WordPress sites with the emoji script on, weighted towards some core releases, not every WordPress site that kept it. About 2,880 domains outside WordPress load Twemoji another way, mostly Forumotion forums, Drupal sites and sites that include the library directly. We removed 1,800 domains whose page titles marked them as for-sale or gambling pages before computing the company and stack figures.
Expert Analysis: Twitter Emoji (Twemoji) Growth Trends & Key Signals for Sales Teams in 2026

I run the detection side at TechnologyChecker.io, and Twemoji is one of the clearest cases I know of a count that measures a platform's default rather than a choice. Our rule fires when a page exposes the twemoji JavaScript object or loads a twemoji script. On 820,555 domains in our October 2026 crawl it did, and 501,207 of them matched a company. How we read signals like this is in our write-up of detection methods. For this page the short version is: the count is a slice of WordPress.
How Twemoji gets onto a page
WordPress prints an emoji loader on every front-end page, with settings that point to the emoji images on s.w.org (you can read it in core's formatting.php). The loader draws a few test emoji on a canvas. If the browser fails, it fetches wp-emoji-release.min.js, which the build joins from twemoji.min.js and wp-emoji.min.js. We checked the mechanism on real pages. 52 of 56 random Twemoji pages that loaded carried the loader settings in their HTML, and so did 43 of the 45 named pages that loaded. All 119 loader pages we fetched, candidates included, pointed the images at s.w.org. In a desktop browser that draws emoji natively, five of nine WordPress pages skipped the download, which is the loader doing its job. Our crawler's browser fails the test, so the library loads and we count it.
Sales signal: a Twemoji detection tells you the site runs WordPress and probably nobody has tuned its default scripts. That's a cheaper, sharper filter for WordPress maintenance and speed work than the WordPress tag alone.
Why the count depends on the WordPress release
The test emoji change between WordPress releases, which would explain what we see: whether our crawler trips the loader depends on the core version. Among WordPress sites whose version we could read, 324 of 1,679 on 6.8 loaded Twemoji in our crawl, against 67 of 25,788 on 7.1. Versions 6.2 to 6.7 sit between 1.1% and 4.8%, and the older 6.0 line reaches 25.8%. Our page samples agree. Of 47 random pages whose emoji script carried a version number, 33 ran WordPress 6.1 or older and 14 ran 6.8 or newer; none ran 6.2 to 6.7.
The monthly line reads 837,814 in June, 870,249 in July, 868,571 in August, 862,682 in September and 820,555 in October. Part of that is on our side, because the set of domains we crawl turns over every month and our detection signals widen over time. Part is WordPress itself: an upgrade can move a site out of the count without anyone touching emoji.
"The 820,555 isn't every WordPress site with emoji switched on. It leans hard towards 6.8 and towards 6.1 and older, and I'd sell to it as exactly that." - David Thomson, CTO at TechnologyChecker.io
Sales signal: treat the list as a pool of WordPress sites with a lot of old cores in it. Don't forecast from the curve.
Who the companies are
69.23% of matched companies with a known size have 1 to 10 employees and 20.87% have 11 to 50. The 2010s are the largest founding decade (43.16%). The enterprise tail is real, 3,276 companies above 1,000 staff, but it lives on side properties built on WordPress: Samsung's and STMicroelectronics' newsrooms, Capgemini's investor site, Hallmark's ideas blog, Jet2's careers site, Cook Medical's Vista portal. 22 of the 50 named rows are subdomains. Universities show up often, from Boston University and the University of Illinois to Carnegie Mellon's Robotics Institute.
Sales signal: at a large account the WordPress owner is a communications, investor-relations or careers team. Pitch them about that one site, not corporate IT.
Europe outweighs the US
The United States has the most matched companies, 78,608, but Germany (39,680), the United Kingdom (37,778), Spain (27,891), Italy (27,147) and four more European countries add up to 199,336, about 2.5 times as many. Brazil (27,460) and India (22,393) are large too. Industries are flat: Construction leads at 4.99%, and the top ten reach only 29.61%.
Sales signal: for WordPress care plans, hosting and agency services, the German, Spanish and Italian pools are each a third of the American one or more, and they're reachable with local-language outreach.
Who drops it, and why
There's no switching table here, because Twemoji has no paid rival to switch to. What we can count is exits: 288,934 domains dropped it on at least one hostname since 16 March 2026, and about one in eleven still load it on another. Some sites will have died or moved. Others turned the script off. Perfmatters sells that as a one-click toggle, and its documentation calls the file an unnecessary extra request for a lot of businesses. A core upgrade does the same job by accident, given the version figures above.
"When a site leaves this list, I assume a speed plugin or a WordPress upgrade before I assume anyone thought about emoji." - David Thomson, CTO at TechnologyChecker.io
Sales signal: a site that still loads the script probably hasn't had a performance pass, so it's a prospect for optimisation plugins, managed hosting and speed audits.
The rest of the stack
On the 820,274 clean live domains behind the stack figures, WordPress runs on 99.65%, jQuery on 96.17% and jQuery Migrate on 86.88%. Elementor is on 27.76%, wpBakery on 5.08% and Divi on 2.86%. Google Analytics is on 43.38%, Cloudflare on 14.54% and Hostinger's CDN on 6.19%. The remaining 0.35%, about 2,880 domains, sit outside WordPress. In a sample of 60 of them, 9 were hosted forums on Forumotion's domains, 5 ran Drupal, 7 were WordPress sites whose WordPress signal we missed, and about 19 loaded Twemoji themselves from a CDN or their own bundle. Two still pointed at Twitter's old MaxCDN address, which Twitter's own README says has shut down.
Sales signal: more than a quarter of these sites run Elementor (27.76%), and wpBakery and Divi add more. They're the natural audience for builder add-ons, template packs and rebuild projects.
Key takeaways
- Twemoji's 820,555 domains are WordPress sites with the core emoji loader on; 99.65% run WordPress.
- The count depends on the core release: 324 of 1,679 versioned 6.8 sites against 67 of 25,788 on 7.1.
- Its 4.0% of Font Services compares unlike products and reflects a default, not a purchase.
- Buyers of services around it are site owners and the teams behind WordPress side sites at large companies.
- The library itself is free, MIT and CC-BY 4.0, and maintained in the jdecked fork.
Sales applications
Outreach template: "Your site still loads WordPress's default emoji script on every page. That usually means nobody has run a speed pass on the theme in a while. We fix that kind of thing in an afternoon." Targeting: filter Twemoji domains in Germany, Spain or Italy with 11 to 200 staff and Elementor in the stack. Competitive angle: sellers of performance plugins and managed hosting can treat every site on this list as one that hasn't switched off a default they recommend disabling.

Frequently Asked Questions
Who uses Twitter Emoji (Twemoji)?
Mostly WordPress sites, because WordPress core loads Twemoji for browsers that can't draw a recent emoji. Our October 2026 crawl finds it on 820,555 domains, 99.65% of them on WordPress, and 69.23% of matched companies have 10 or fewer staff. Named users include Samsung's newsroom, Booking Holdings, Capgemini's investor site, Hallmark Ideas and Boston University.
How many customers does Twitter Emoji (Twemoji) have?
None in the paying sense. Twemoji is free and open source, so we count websites: 820,555 domains in our October 2026 crawl, 501,207 of them matched to a company. Nearly all got it from WordPress rather than choosing it. Since March 2026, 288,934 domains have dropped it on at least one hostname, often by switching off WordPress's emoji script.
What is Twitter Emoji (Twemoji)'s market share?
4.0% of Font Services, 4th of the 25 technologies we track there, on 820,555 domains in October 2026. The share compares unlike products: the Google Font API (56.54%) serves typefaces and Font Awesome (29.64%) serves icons, while Twemoji renders emoji. Its rank reflects how many WordPress sites keep the core emoji script, not a buying decision.
What are the best alternatives to Twitter Emoji (Twemoji)?
For most WordPress sites the alternative is no library at all: switch off the emoji script and the operating system draws emoji itself, as Perfmatters' documentation notes. If you want one consistent look across devices, the jdecked fork of Twemoji is the maintained version. None of the Font Services leaders, the Google Font API, Font Awesome or Adobe Fonts, does the same job.
Which countries use Twitter Emoji (Twemoji) the most?
The United States leads with 78,608 matched companies, then Germany (39,680), the United Kingdom (37,778), Spain (27,891), Brazil (27,460) and Italy (27,147). What is a Twemoji?
Twemoji is Twitter's open-source set of emoji images, plus a small JavaScript library that swaps emoji characters on a page for those images so they look the same on every device. Twitter released it in November 2014. On the web you mostly meet it through WordPress, which bundles the library into its wp-emoji-release.min.js file.
Who owns Twemoji?
Twitter, now X, created Twemoji and holds the copyright for 2014 to 2021, per the licence file of the maintained fork. Since 2022 the fork's copyright sits with Jason Sofonia and Justine De Caires, both ex-Twitter, who publish it as jdecked/twemoji on GitHub and @twemoji/api on npm. Its latest release, v17.0.3, came out in June 2026.
Is Twemoji free?
Yes. The maintained fork's README puts the code under the MIT License and the graphics under CC-BY 4.0, so commercial use is allowed as long as you credit the project. A mention in a README, an About page, a site footer or the source code is enough, per the same README. WordPress ships it at no cost.
What happened to the Twemoji?
Twitter stopped updating it. Emojipedia's July 2025 timeline says Twitter's set has had no major update since 2023, while a separate open-source project by former Twitter staff and Discord designers keeps going. That fork, jdecked/twemoji, released v17.0.3 in June 2026, supporting Emoji 17.0. The old MaxCDN links in Twitter's original instructions no longer work.
Does WordPress use Twemoji?
Yes. WordPress core's build joins Twemoji's script and its own wp-emoji script into wp-emoji-release.min.js, and the emoji images come from s.w.org, WordPress.org's server. All 119 sampled pages carrying the loader pointed there. The loader downloads the script only when the browser fails its emoji test, which is how our crawl finds 820,555 domains.
How do I disable emojis in WordPress?
Use a performance plugin or a code snippet that removes the emoji detection script. Perfmatters, for example, has a Disable Emojis toggle under its General settings, and its documentation notes that emoji still show, drawn by the operating system instead. Doing so takes your site out of our Twemoji count, which is one reason 288,934 domains have dropped it since March 2026.
Does Discord use Twemoji?
Yes, per Emojipedia's 2025 Twemoji timeline, which names Discord, Roblox and Firefox on Windows (for flag emoji) among the places the set appears. The maintained fork lists Discord staff among its contributors. Apps like Discord bundle the images themselves, so they don't appear in our website count, which is driven by WordPress's emoji loader.
