Marchex Usage Statistics

Marchex is the oldest platform in this category, first appearing in our detection history in July 2008 on two domains. Its growth is the flattest of the top five: 64 domains in January 2016, then a jump to 2,116 by 2018, followed by a slow climb through 2,811 in 2020, 3,614 in 2022 and 4,126 in 2024. Roughly 2,000 domains added across six years, against CallRail's 17,000 over the same span. Note the break in the chart: the series joins our long-run history through July 2025 to our current crawl from June 2026, so the step across it reflects coverage rather than adoption.

Marchex Customers by Company Size & Age

What size companies use Marchex? Small ones by count, large ones by name. 62.79% have ten or fewer employees and 91.1% have 50 or fewer, based on our analysis of 4,512 companies with employee data on file. Yet the largest detections are university systems and utilities: the University of Texas, CenterPoint Energy, IDEA Public Schools. That split is characteristic of multi-location deployments, where a central contract produces one detection per branch or campus site.

Company Age (Founded Decade)

What Industries Use Marchex the Most?

Retail dominates at 42.01%, an unusually top-heavy distribution: the next vertical, Construction, holds just 4.92%. No other vendor in our Call Tracking category shows a single industry above 45% except the healthcare specialists. The tail tells the other half of the story, with Motor Vehicle Manufacturing at 3.66%, which in LinkedIn's taxonomy covers dealerships and auto service chains, based on our enriched company data at TechnologyChecker.io.

Retail brands using Marchex account for 42.01% of the platform's base, the highest single-vertical share of any generalist vendor in this category. Automotive companies using Marchex such as Firestone Complete Auto Care and Take 5 show up under the Motor Vehicle Manufacturing label at 3.66%, reflecting the dealer and service-network business Marchex has served for years. Universities using Marchex form a third cluster that never appears in the industry chart, including the University of Texas and Stephen F. Austin State University.

Marchex Alternatives & Competitors

Marchex occupies an awkward middle position, based on our market share data across 29.9M active domains. CallRail (46.67%) undercuts it on simplicity and price at the small-business end. Invoca (19.39%) outspends it on AI conversation analytics at the enterprise end. CallTrackingMetrics (14.01%) sits directly above it on share and takes more Marchex domains than it returns. Its defensible ground is the multi-location retail and automotive network, where none of those three concentrates.

Marchex Customer Migration

Marchex loses more domains than it gains, though the volumes are small. 9 domains went to CallRail and 6 to CallTrackingMetrics, against 8 arriving from CallRail and 3 from CallTrackingMetrics. That's 11 gained against 19 lost, a modest net outflow with no single dominant corridor. These windows cover churn observed since March 2026, so read them as current direction rather than lifetime totals.

Expert Analysis: Marchex Growth Trends & Key Signals for Sales Teams in 2026

Mehmet Suleyman
Mehmet SuleymanCEO & Co-founder, TechnologyChecker

I've spent more than ten years building web crawling and technographic systems, and Marchex is the vendor in this category whose chart and customer list disagree most sharply. This analysis draws on our July 2026 crawl, which found Marchex on 6,831 active domains and matched 5,004 of them to enriched company records, a 73.3% match rate. The industry chart says retail. The customer list says universities and auto shops. Both are correct, and the gap between them is the useful part.

Growth trajectory

Marchex has the longest history here, first detected in July 2008, five years before anyone else in the top five reached meaningful volume. It also has the flattest curve. After a jump from 64 domains in January 2016 to 2,116 by 2018, it added roughly 2,000 more across the following six years: 2,811 in 2020, 3,614 in 2022, 4,126 in January 2024. Over that same stretch CallRail added about 17,000. This is a business defending an installed base rather than competing for the category. The step in our chart between July 2025 and June 2026 is our own coverage widening, not a change in that trajectory.

"Marchex was detecting calls five years before CallRail existed at scale, and it now holds about a ninth of CallRail's footprint. First mover advantage in call tracking turned out to be worth very little." - Mehmet Suleyman, CEO & Co-founder at TechnologyChecker

Sales Signal: A flat installed base with low churn is a stable, reachable account list rather than a growth story. These customers have run the same vendor for years, which means long tenure and, usually, contracts nobody has re-examined recently.

Customer profile

The size data reads small: 62.79% have ten or fewer employees, 91.1% under 50, only 0.66% above 1,000 staff. The named customers read institutional: the University of Texas, CenterPoint Energy, IDEA Public Schools, HealthFirst. The reconciliation is multi-location deployment, the same pattern as Invoca, where one contract lands across many branch, campus or franchise sites. What separates Marchex is age. 13.71% of its customers were founded before 1960, the highest in this category, and only 6.06% in the 2020s. Universities founded in 1887 and 1895, a utility from 1866, a grocery chain from 1960. This is the least digitally native customer base we detect in call tracking.

Sales Signal: Old, multi-location institutions with long vendor tenure buy on procurement cycles, not on product comparisons. The entry point is a renewal date or a new marketing hire, not a feature argument.

Industry and geographic concentration

Retail at 42.01% is the most lopsided industry split of any generalist in this category, with construction second at just 4.92%. But the chart hides two real clusters. Automotive services sit under Motor Vehicle Manufacturing at 3.66%, which is where Firestone Complete Auto Care and Take 5 land, and higher education doesn't surface at all despite supplying several of the largest detections. Geographically Marchex is the outlier in the other direction: 71.5% United States, with Canada and the UK tied at 594 companies each and Australia at 201. Compare Invoca's 98.6% US concentration and the difference in go-to-market is obvious.

Sales Signal: This is the best cross-border list in the category. A campaign targeting Marchex users reaches the US, Canada, the UK and Australia from one filter, which no other vendor's base supports at this ratio.

Migration patterns

Marchex churn is low and undramatic. Since March 2026 we've watched 9 domains leave for CallRail and 6 for CallTrackingMetrics, against 8 arriving from CallRail and 3 from CallTrackingMetrics. Eleven gained, nineteen lost. Set against a 6,831 domain base, that's close to noise, and it's the most balanced churn profile of any vendor in the top five. Compare Invoca, which loses to CallRail at 4:1 on far higher volume. Marchex isn't being displaced. It just isn't winning anything either.

"Nineteen domains lost across a base of nearly seven thousand. Marchex customers aren't leaving, they're simply not multiplying. Stagnation and churn look nothing alike in detection data." - Mehmet Suleyman, CEO & Co-founder at TechnologyChecker

Sales Signal: Low churn cuts both ways. Displacement campaigns will be slow here because nothing is actively pushing these customers to move. The better play is expansion within the account rather than replacement of it.

Technology ecosystem

The Google base is standard, 98.45% on Google Tag Manager and 96.65% on Google Analytics. Two numbers below that are not. Ensighten appears on 9.34% and Commanders Act TagCommander, a French tag manager, on 4.48%, both far above their category norms and consistent with the Canadian and British share of this base. Marchex also has the highest detectable CRM presence in the category at 3.51% for Astute Solutions, a customer engagement platform, which fits a retail base that handles service calls rather than sales leads. Facebook Pixel at 69.96% is well above CallRail's 45.37%.

Sales Signal: The TagCommander and Ensighten overlap identifies the European and Canadian enterprise slice of this base, which is the segment least served by the American vendors above Marchex on share. That's a defensible niche to sell into rather than against.

What the public record adds

Marchex is the only vendor in this category that has been a public company, which means its trajectory has been documented in a way that detection data alone can't match. That record and our crawl agree: a long-established business holding a stable base rather than expanding it. Where the public narrative and our data diverge is scope. Marchex's own positioning centres on conversation intelligence for automotive and multi-location brands, which would suggest a concentrated automotive footprint. Our industry breakdown puts Motor Vehicle Manufacturing at only 3.66% against retail at 42.01%. The likely explanation is labelling: LinkedIn classifies dealer groups and service chains inconsistently, so automotive is almost certainly understated in any single row of that chart.

Sales Signal: Don't size the automotive opportunity in this base from the industry chart alone. Filter by company name and location count instead, because the vertical is split across at least three LinkedIn labels.

Key takeaways

1. Market position: #4 at 5.57%, the last vendor above 3% before the category's regional long tail.
2. Growth phase: mature and flat, roughly 2,000 domains added across six years.
3. Core customer: a multi-location retail, automotive or education organisation, often decades old, deploying across branch sites.
4. Competitive moat: the most internationally balanced base in the category and deep tenure in dealer and service networks.
5. Key vulnerability: squeezed between CallRail on price and Invoca on AI capability, with no growth engine of its own.
6. Underrated asset: the oldest customer base here, with 13.71% founded before 1960 and unusually low churn.

Sales applications

Outreach angle: "You're running Marchex across multiple locations with Google Tag Manager on 98% of your sites. Our data shows this base has the lowest switching rate in call tracking, which usually means nobody has reviewed the contract in a while. When was the last benchmark?"

Targeting strategy: on TechnologyChecker.io, filter Marchex detections to Canada and the United Kingdom for 1,188 companies, the largest non-US segment any vendor in this category offers, or to retail at 42.01% for the core vertical.

Competitive angle: the 19 domains that left Marchex since March 2026 went to CallRail and CallTrackingMetrics roughly evenly, which tells you departing customers are trading down to simpler tools rather than up to AI analytics. Price is the lever here.

Every figure above comes from our own crawl: 6,831 detected Marchex domains, 5,004 enriched company profiles, and observed switching across 29.9M active domains. Explore the full company list, filters and migration data at TechnologyChecker.io, or read our related analysis on GA4 migration and the sites that still haven't switched.
