Our crawler detects 174,847 domains using hCaptcha, from small startups to global brands that use hCaptcha like Shopify, Orange, Crédit Agricole and Renault. Below you'll find a full list of companies using hCaptcha with market share, industry breakdowns and geographic data.

hCaptcha holds a 3.44% share of the bot detection and CAPTCHA market, ranking #4 of the 32 products we track, just behind Cloudflare Turnstile (3.68%), based on our analysis of 63,299 enriched companies at TechnologyChecker.io. It remains the largest CAPTCHA provider not owned by Google or Cloudflare. The product is built by Intuition Machines, Inc., an ML company that also serves enterprise fraud and MFA customers. The base is strikingly European: only 27.2% of enriched customers are in the United States, against 11.5% in Germany and 8.7% in France.

hCaptcha Usage Statistics

How fast has hCaptcha grown? hCaptcha sat at a handful of domains until April 2020, when Cloudflare announced its own migration from reCAPTCHA and adoption began in earnest. Our coverage changed part-way through this chart. Our records through July 2025 show 499 domains by December 2020, 11,148 by December 2022, a sharp climb through mid-2024, and a peak of 159,797 in April 2025 before ending at 121,540 in July 2025. Our current crawl picks the series up at 90,120 domains in June 2026 and now detects 174,847. The step across the gap is modest by the standards of this category, because hCaptcha is one of the easiest products here to identify: it exposes a script source, DOM elements, a CSS hook, JavaScript globals and a content-security-policy entry, so both measurement systems see it well. Compare that with Akamai Bot Manager, detectable only by cookie, where the figures differ by a factor of five.

List of Companies Using hCaptcha

Which companies use hCaptcha? Our verified list of companies using hCaptcha on TechnologyChecker.io covers brands that use hCaptcha across many industries and geographies, from Orange, Crédit Agricole, TikTok, Renault and Michelin to Shopify, NVIDIA, ASML, British Airways and SpaceX. Many of the websites using hCaptcha deploy it on login pages, form submissions and API endpoints rather than public storefronts, so its real reach extends beyond what page-level detection captures. Note that this list is ordered by company size, so it shows the largest customers rather than the typical one: across the whole base, 64.9% of hCaptcha companies have ten employees or fewer.

Which Countries Use hCaptcha the Most?

Which countries use hCaptcha the most? hCaptcha has the most European customer base of any major CAPTCHA provider. The United States accounts for just 27.2% of enriched customers, the lowest US share in this category, followed by Germany (11.5%), the United Kingdom (8.9%) and France (8.7%), with the Netherlands (3.7%), Canada (3.6%), Australia (3.5%) and Brazil (3.1%) behind, spread across 195 countries in total. English-speaking markets are only 43.2% of the base. Germany and France together nearly match the United States, which no other product here comes close to, and it is the clearest evidence that the privacy-first positioning is doing real commercial work under GDPR.

hCaptcha Market Share Among Bot Detection & CAPTCHA

What is hCaptcha's market share? hCaptcha holds a 3.44% share of the bot detection and CAPTCHA market, ranking #4 of 32 tracked products, based on our monthly crawl of 28.2M domains at TechnologyChecker.io. Ahead of it sit reCAPTCHA (65.26%), Cloudflare Bot Management (26.04%) and Cloudflare Turnstile (3.68%). The gap to Turnstile is now only 12,329 domains and closing, having been far wider a year ago. That is the number to watch: hCaptcha and Turnstile make almost the same pitch, privacy-first verification without Google, and they are separated by less than a quarter of a point of share.

hCaptcha Customers by Company Size & Age

Is hCaptcha only for large enterprises? No, and the distribution says the opposite of what the notable-companies list suggests. 64.9% of hCaptcha companies have 1-10 employees and 86.6% have 50 or fewer, while only 0.38% employ more than 10,000, based on our analysis of 63,299 enriched companies. The recognisable names further down this page are the top of a very long tail, not the centre of it. That shape is what a free tier of 100K requests a month produces: broad adoption among small sites that want bot protection without Google's data collection, with an enterprise business layered on top.

What Industries Use hCaptcha the Most?

Which industries use hCaptcha? The spread is broad and flat, with no industry above 6%. Retail leads at 5.98%, followed by Construction (4.07%), IT Services and IT Consulting (3.5%), Business Consulting and Services (2.68%), Retail Apparel and Fashion (2.59%) and Software Development (2.35%). Retail plus Retail Apparel and Fashion together reach 8.57%, and that concentration is not accidental: hCaptcha is the challenge that ships inside Shopify's checkout, which puts it on a large number of online stores by default rather than by deliberate selection.

Retail3,161 (5.98%)
Construction2,149 (4.07%)
IT Services and IT Consulting1,847 (3.5%)
Business Consulting and Services1,416 (2.68%)
Retail Apparel and Fashion1,367 (2.59%)
Software Development1,241 (2.35%)

How are specific industries using hCaptcha? Retailers using hCaptcha make up the largest group at 5.98%, plus a further 2.59% in Retail Apparel and Fashion, many of them arriving through Shopify's checkout rather than an explicit purchase. Financial services companies using hCaptcha include Crédit Agricole, Groupe BPCE, Revolut, Navy Federal, Global Payments and Synchrony Financial, a group weighted towards European institutions where data handling is a procurement question. Industrial and technology companies on hCaptcha like Renault, Michelin, 3M, ASML, NVIDIA and Baker Hughes show it also holds up under enterprise scrutiny, and public and nonprofit bodies such as the UNDP, CNRS and SNCF Voyageurs round out a notably non-American profile.

hCaptcha Alternatives & Competitors

How does hCaptcha compare to competitors? Based on our market share data across 28.2M crawled domains, hCaptcha sits fourth in a category shaped by two much larger incumbents. reCAPTCHA (65.26%) is the default it was founded to displace, and it is still hCaptcha's largest source of new domains. Cloudflare Bot Management (26.04%) and Akamai Bot Manager (0.48%) sell enterprise edge protection to a different buyer at a much higher price. The one genuine head-to-head is Cloudflare Turnstile (3.68%), which makes nearly the same privacy argument, is also free, and now leads hCaptcha by 12,329 domains. Turnstile's advantage is distribution through Cloudflare's CDN; hCaptcha's is that it is independent of both Google and Cloudflare, which matters to buyers who do not want their bot protection tied to their edge provider.

hCaptcha Customer Migration

Are companies switching to or from hCaptcha? Since we began tracking in March 2026, hCaptcha has gained 2,517 domains and lost 2,061, a slight net gain of 456 on a base of 174,847. The traffic is genuinely two-way rather than one-directional. Its largest source is reCAPTCHA, 2,153 gained against 836 lost, a healthy 2.6:1 in hCaptcha's favour. Against Cloudflare Bot Management the flow reverses, 174 gained against 941 lost, the single largest outflow on this page. With Cloudflare Turnstile, its closest competitor, hCaptcha is modestly behind at 160 gained to 257 lost. Read together: hCaptcha keeps taking domains from Google, but loses them to Cloudflare, in both the free and the enterprise tier.

Tech Stack of hCaptcha-Powered Websites

What technologies pair with hCaptcha? The defining number is Shopify at 25.04%. A quarter of all hCaptcha domains are Shopify stores, because hCaptcha is the challenge Shopify ships in its own checkout, so those merchants inherit it rather than choose it. That single fact explains much of this profile, including the retail concentration and the small median company size. Outside Shopify, WordPress accounts for 22.67% and WooCommerce for 4.63%, with Contact Form 7 at 8.39%. Cloudflare sits at 35.61%, roughly the web-wide rate and far below Turnstile's 63.46%, confirming hCaptcha is chosen independently of the edge provider. One more marker of the European base: Matomo, the self-hosted analytics tool favoured by privacy-conscious and GDPR-sensitive operators, appears on 3.3% of hCaptcha domains against 1.27% of reCAPTCHA's.

Expert Analysis: hCaptcha Growth Trends & Key Signals for Sales Teams in 2026

    Mehmet Suleyman
    Mehmet SuleymanCEO & Co-founder, TechnologyChecker

When we first started tracking hCaptcha it served a narrow audience. That changed in April 2020, and the data since shows what two anchor customers can do for a privacy-positioned CAPTCHA.

    1. Growth trajectory: from dormant to 175K domains in six years

hCaptcha sat at 4 active domains as late as March 2020. That April, Cloudflare announced it was moving from Google's reCAPTCHA to hCaptcha, citing data-handling concerns and reCAPTCHA's shift to a paid model at scale. Our earlier records show 517 domains by December 2020, 11,358 by December 2022, then a steep run through mid-2024 from 40,388 in July to 115,666 in September, and a peak of 159,797 in April 2025.

We now detect 174,847 domains, up from 90,120 in June 2026. The step across that gap is smaller here than anywhere else in this category, and that is a fact about hCaptcha rather than about our crawler: it exposes a script source, DOM elements, a CSS hook, three JavaScript globals and a content-security-policy entry, so it is hard for any crawler to miss. Akamai Bot Manager, detectable only from cookies, differs by a factor of five across the same gap.

Sales signal: Growth continues but the composition has changed. hCaptcha still takes domains from reCAPTCHA at a 2.6:1 rate, yet it now loses more to Cloudflare than it gains from anyone except Google. The addressable pool is companies on reCAPTCHA that care about privacy compliance and are not already Cloudflare customers, because those prospects will default to Turnstile.

    2. Customer profile: small, young and European

I previously described this base as enterprise-heavy. The enriched data does not support that, and the correction changes how the list should be used. 64.9% of hCaptcha companies have 1-10 employees, 86.6% have 50 or fewer, and only 0.38% employ more than 10,000. What misled me was reading a notable-companies list sorted by headcount as though it described the distribution. It describes the tail.

Age follows the same shape: 36.02% were founded in the 2010s and 20.43% in the 2020s, with 6.1% predating 1960. By company type, 48.66% are privately held and 11.71% public.

The large names are real and worth naming, Orange, Crédit Agricole, TikTok, Renault, Michelin, NVIDIA, ASML, British Airways, Shopify, Revolut, but they sit on top of tens of thousands of very small sites, many of which arrived through Shopify's checkout rather than by choosing hCaptcha at all.

Sales signal: Segment this list before you use it. The enterprise slice is 218 companies at 10,001+ employees, and those are worth named-account treatment in banking, automotive and industrials. The other 99.6% is a self-serve, price-sensitive audience where a high-touch motion will not pay for itself.

    3. Industry and geographic signals

Industry distribution is flat, with no vertical above 6%: Retail 5.98%, Construction 4.07%, IT Services and IT Consulting 3.5%, Business Consulting 2.68%, Retail Apparel and Fashion 2.59%, Software Development 2.35%. Retail and Retail Apparel together reach 8.57%, and the reason is structural rather than a preference, since hCaptcha ships inside Shopify's checkout and 25.04% of all hCaptcha domains are Shopify stores.

Geography is the most distinctive thing about this profile. The United States accounts for only 27.2% of enriched customers, the lowest US concentration of any product in this category, against Germany at 11.5%, the United Kingdom at 8.9% and France at 8.7%, across 195 countries. English-speaking markets are just 43.2% of the base. Germany and France together nearly equal the United States.

A second signal confirms it. Matomo, the self-hosted analytics tool chosen almost exclusively for data-protection reasons, runs on 3.3% of hCaptcha domains against 1.27% of reCAPTCHA's. The same buyers who refuse Google Analytics refuse Google's CAPTCHA.

Sales signal: European companies in regulated verticals are the strongest segment here, and the privacy argument is doing measurable commercial work rather than just marketing work. Target compliance officers and CISOs in Germany and France with a privacy-versus-reCAPTCHA angle, and use Matomo co-presence as a qualifying signal.

    4. The competitive picture: CAPTCHA wars

hCaptcha ranks #4 of 32 with a 3.44% share. Above it, reCAPTCHA holds 65.26% and Cloudflare Bot Management 26.04%, but the number that matters is the one immediately above: Cloudflare Turnstile at 3.68%, ahead by just 12,329 domains.

That is the real contest, and hCaptcha is currently behind in it. Turnstile makes nearly the same argument, privacy-first verification without Google, is also free, and is distributed through a CDN that already fronts a third of the web. Against Turnstile, hCaptcha runs 160 gained to 257 lost. Against Cloudflare Bot Management the gap is wider, 174 gained to 941 lost.

Pricing still favours hCaptcha at the entry point. Its free tier covers 100K requests a month with Pro at $99, while Google's reCAPTCHA caps free use at 10,000 assessments a month. Turnstile is free without a cap, which is why price is not the axis hCaptcha can win on.

Sales signal: Companies on reCAPTCHA that were caught out by Google's free-tier reduction remain the best migration targets, and hCaptcha still wins that comparison 2.6:1. But if the prospect already runs Cloudflare, expect to lose to Turnstile; only 35.61% of hCaptcha domains sit behind Cloudflare, against 63.46% of Turnstile's, so the strongest pipeline is explicitly non-Cloudflare infrastructure.

    5. What hCaptcha's adoption says about the broader market

The Cloudflare migration in 2020 proved large-scale CAPTCHA switches are possible. Shopify followed, and in hCaptcha's own published case study picked it to protect merchant logins and limited-release product drops. Six years on, our data shows how much that single integration still shapes the product's footprint: a quarter of all hCaptcha domains are Shopify stores, and that alone explains the retail concentration, the small median company size and much of the international spread.

It is also a strategic dependency worth naming. hCaptcha's two defining moments were both platform decisions made by other companies, and Cloudflare has since built and shipped a competing product of its own. CAPTCHA selection in 2026 turns on privacy compliance, free-tier economics and detection accuracy as AI solvers improve, but distribution through a platform still beats all three.

Sales signal: The privacy alternative message still works, and the German and French numbers prove it. Treat hCaptcha adoption outside Shopify as a deliberate choice and a signal that the company takes both bot protection and data governance seriously; treat hCaptcha on a Shopify store as a default that the merchant probably did not choose.

    G2 review signals

Our detection data combined with G2 sentiment points in one direction. The handful of reviewers consistently praise simple, effective CAPTCHA questions as the standout strength. Sample size is small (3 sentiment snippets), so treat the signal as directional, not statistical.

    Key takeaways

hCaptcha is the largest CAPTCHA provider not owned by Google or Cloudflare, at 174,847 active domains and 3.44% share, ranking #4 of 32. The customer base is small, young and unusually European: 86.6% of these companies have 50 or fewer employees and only 27.2% are US-based, the lowest US concentration in the category.

Two numbers frame its position. It takes domains from reCAPTCHA at 2.6:1, so the founding argument still converts. But Cloudflare Turnstile now leads it by 12,329 domains and beats it in both direct corridors, and Turnstile is free without a request cap. hCaptcha's defensible ground is buyers who want bot protection independent of both Google and their CDN provider, which is a real constituency, and the German and French concentration shows where it lives.

    Sales applications

For sales teams using TechnologyChecker.io data, hCaptcha adoption signals an organisation that is security-conscious and privacy-aware, provided it is not simply inheriting the tool from Shopify. Target these companies with: (1) complementary security products such as WAFs, DDoS protection and fraud detection, (2) compliance and audit tooling for organisations already invested in privacy-first infrastructure, weighted toward Germany and France, and (3) migration services for the companies still on reCAPTCHA. Filter by hCaptcha on TechnologyChecker.io to surface 174,847 active domains and 63,299 enriched company profiles with industry, size and geographic data.

    Frequently Asked Questions

    Who uses hCaptcha?

We detect hCaptcha on 174,847 domains, including Orange Group, AccorHotels, Tiktok. A detection means the technology is present on that domain, which for large organisations is often a single storefront or subdomain rather than a company-wide deployment. Among domains we matched to a company with a resolved industry, the most common is Retail (5.98%).

How many customers does hCaptcha have?

We detect 174,847 domains running hCaptcha across our monthly crawl of live business domains. Company data could be matched for 63,299 of them (36.2%), and every company-size, industry and country breakdown on this page describes that matched subset rather than the full detected base. A further 16,178 domains carried a hCaptcha detection previously and no longer do.

    What is hCaptcha's market share?

hCaptcha holds 3.44% of the Bot Detection & CAPTCHA category, ranking #4. This is a share of the domains we detect running a platform in this category — not a share of all websites, and not a share of spending — so it is not directly comparable to figures published on other denominators.

What are the best alternatives to hCaptcha?

The top alternatives to hCaptcha include reCAPTCHA (65.26% market share), Cloudflare Bot Management (26.04% market share), Cloudflare Turnstile (3.68% market share), Akamai Bot Manager (0.48% market share) — measured as a share of the domains we detect running a platform in this category.

Which countries use hCaptcha the most?

United States leads with 16,443 matched hCaptcha domains, followed by Germany (6,958), United Kingdom (5,413), France (5,279), Netherlands (2,214). These are counts within the 63,299 domains we could match to a company record, not the full detected base.

    What size companies use hCaptcha?

The most common company size is 1-10 employees, representing 64.89% of the hCaptcha domains we could match to a company record and size — a subset of 63,299 matched companies, not of all 174,847 detected domains. This is followed by 11-50 employees (21.66%) and 51-200 employees (8.1%).

How old are companies that use hCaptcha?

Among the hCaptcha domains we could match to a company with a known founding date, most were founded in the 2010s (36.02%), followed by the 2020s (20.43%). That matched subset is drawn from 63,299 companies and is not representative of all 174,847 detected domains. This suggests hCaptcha is most popular among relatively young companies.

What is the ideal customer profile for hCaptcha?

The ideal hCaptcha customer is: Company Size: 1-10 employees (64.9% of the base; 86.6% have 50 or fewer), Location: US (27.2%), Germany (11.5%), UK (8.9%) or France (8.7%), across 195 countries, City: London, Paris, New York, Berlin, Founded: 2010-2019 (36.0%), with a further 20.4% founded in the 2020s, Company Age: ~6-16 years old, privately held (48.7%) — based on our analysis of 63,299 enriched companies at TechnologyChecker.io.

    Is hCaptcha legit?

Yes. Our crawler detects hCaptcha on 174,847 active domains, including Shopify, Orange, Crédit Agricole, TikTok, Renault, NVIDIA and ASML. Shopify chose hCaptcha over reCAPTCHA for merchant protection, as documented in their published case study, and it remains the largest CAPTCHA provider not owned by Google or Cloudflare. Capterra gives it a 4.5/5 rating. Based on our analysis of 63,299 enriched companies at TechnologyChecker.io, the customer base runs from very small sites to banks, carmakers and government bodies, with an unusually European centre of gravity.

Which is better, hCaptcha or reCAPTCHA?

It depends on your priorities. hCaptcha offers stronger privacy protections and does not share data with an advertising platform. Its free tier of 100K requests a month is more generous than reCAPTCHA's 10K limit. reCAPTCHA has broader developer community support and v3's invisible mode is smoother for end users. The evidence from migrations favours hCaptcha on the privacy question: since March 2026 we have seen 2,153 domains move from reCAPTCHA to hCaptcha against 836 the other way. Worth knowing before you choose, though, is that Cloudflare Turnstile now makes the same privacy argument, is free without a request cap, and has overtaken hCaptcha at 187,176 domains to 174,847.

    What data does hCaptcha collect?

HCaptcha collects IP addresses, interaction timing, mouse movements, browser fingerprint data, hardware characteristics, and gyroscopic data. Unlike reCAPTCHA. It doesn't share collected data with an advertising platform. Enterprise customers get additional options to pre-blind user data for HIPAA, PCI, and GDPR compliance, per hCaptcha's documentation.

What is the risk score for hCaptcha?

HCaptcha Enterprise uses risk scores from 0.0 (no risk) to 1.0 (confirmed threat). This is inverted from reCAPTCHA v3, where 1.0 means safe. If you're migrating from reCAPTCHA, you'll need to flip your score threshold logic. The free and Pro tiers use challenge-based verification rather than passive risk scoring.

What is the difference between hCaptcha Pro and free?

HCaptcha Free provides basic CAPTCHA challenges with up to 100K requests/month. Pro ($99/month billed annually, or $139 month-to-month) adds low-friction self-refining challenge modes, custom themes, and advanced bot detection with 100K evaluations included. Enterprise plans offer custom pricing with dedicated machine learning models and pre-blinding options for regulated industries.

    Does hCaptcha cost money?

hCaptcha has three tiers: Basic is free (100K requests a month), Pro costs $99/month billed annually, and Enterprise is custom-priced. The free tier is considerably more generous than reCAPTCHA's 10K monthly assessment limit. Our distribution data suggests most of the 174,847 active domains are on the free tier: 64.9% of these companies have ten or fewer employees and only 0.38% have more than 10,000. The paid business sits in that small enterprise slice, among names like Crédit Agricole, Renault and NVIDIA.

Why did Cloudflare switch to hCaptcha?

Cloudflare announced in April 2020 that it was migrating from reCAPTCHA to hCaptcha, citing concerns about Google's data collection practices. The switch affected millions of websites behind Cloudflare's CDN and was a major catalyst for hCaptcha's growth. Our detection data shows hCaptcha jumped from 4 to 107 active domains in May 2020, the month after the announcement.

    Can AI solve hCaptcha challenges?

Modern AI can solve many CAPTCHA challenges, but hCaptcha claims its system remains effective as of 2026. Per hCaptcha's February 2026 blog post. They've built countermeasures against AI agents into hCaptcha Enterprise. The platform uses adaptive challenge types and machine learning to evolve its defenses, though the arms race between CAPTCHA providers and AI solvers continues.

    Is hCaptcha GDPR compliant?

HCaptcha positions itself as a GDPR-friendly alternative to reCAPTCHA. It doesn't use collected data for advertising purposes and offers Enterprise customers options to pre-blind user data. However, hCaptcha still collects browser fingerprints and IP addresses, which are personal data under GDPR. Organizations should evaluate their specific compliance requirements and consent mechanisms.

    What companies use hCaptcha Enterprise?

Per hCaptcha's own website, more than 60% of major payment platforms, along with banks and fintechs worldwide, use hCaptcha Enterprise. Our detection data at TechnologyChecker.io confirms enterprise adoption by Bank of America, UBS, Credit Agricole, Oracle, SAP, Siemens, Nike, Tesla, and Samsung. Shopify's published case study documents their Enterprise deployment for protecting merchant operations.

How do I add hCaptcha to my website?

Add the hCaptcha JavaScript tag to your page, place a div with class 'h-captcha' and your site key where you want the widget, then verify the response token server-side using hCaptcha's API. WordPress users can install hCaptcha via the official plugin. The setup is designed as a drop-in replacement for reCAPTCHA, and hCaptcha's docs include migration guides for switching from reCAPTCHA v2, v3, or Enterprise.

    Does hCaptcha work with WordPress?

Yes, hCaptcha offers an official WordPress plugin that integrates with login forms, registration, comments, WooCommerce checkout and popular form builders like Contact Form 7 and WPForms. The plugin supports free, Pro and Enterprise tiers. WordPress accounts for 22.67% of hCaptcha domains in our data, with Contact Form 7 on 8.39% and WooCommerce on 4.63%. Note that WordPress is not the biggest single driver here: Shopify is, at 25.04%, because hCaptcha ships inside Shopify's own checkout.

Is hCaptcha better for privacy than reCAPTCHA?

HCaptcha collects similar technical signals (browser data, mouse movements, IP addresses) but doesn't share this data with an advertising platform. ReCAPTCHA data feeds into Google's broader platform. For organizations subject to GDPR, CCPA, or similar regulations, hCaptcha's independent status offers a clearer compliance path. This privacy advantage drove Cloudflare's 2020 migration and continues to drive enterprise adoption.
