Companies Using Cisco Email Security
Our live crawl finds companies using Cisco Email Security on 11,136 domains, the gateway Cisco has sold since it bought IronPort in 2007 and now markets as Cisco Secure Email Gateway. The brands that use Cisco Email Security include Deloitte, Starbucks, Allianz and Johnson & Johnson, each on its head-office domain. This list of companies using Cisco Email Security breaks the base down by size, country, industry and stack.
What we read is the domain's MX record, the DNS entry naming where inbound mail is delivered. If it points at Cisco's iphmx.com hosts, Cisco is filtering that organisation's mail right now, and the row disappears the day the customer repoints MX. So the websites using Cisco Email Security below are a live routing census, not a licence list. The top companies using Cisco Email Security are mostly large, and 17.11% of the companies using Cisco Email Security we matched employ more than 1,000 people. Data analysed September 23, 2026.

Cisco Email Security Usage Statistics
Our crawl read Cisco Email Security on 11,136 domains in September 2026, against 9,229 in June, and nearly all of that step is coverage: of the 4,329 current domains first detected in June, 4,229 were first reached by our crawl within three days, and July repeats it at 1,241 of 1,364. Read the line as a trend rather than a same-domain comparison, because the set of domains we crawl turns over every month as dead sites drop out and newly discovered ones are added, and our detection widens over time. September is the only month with an adoption-like shape, and even there just 45 of its 104 newly detected domains were new to our crawl, so the other 59 switched Cisco on somewhere we were already looking.

Which Countries Use Cisco Email Security the Most?
Which countries use Cisco Email Security the most? The United States accounts for 3,285 of the 8,107 companies with a country on record, 40.52%, and Germany is second at 523 (6.45%), then Canada 452 (5.58%), Spain 355 (4.38%), France 298 (3.68%), the United Kingdom 289 (3.56%) and Israel 226 (2.79%). The eight European countries inside our top fifteen come to 2,170 companies, 26.77% of the matched base, so this is a genuinely international install base rather than a US list with a few outliers. Israel in seventh is the entry worth a second look, ahead of Australia, Belgium and India, based on our enriched company data.
Share of the 8,275 Cisco Email Security domains we matched to a company record — 74.3% of the 11,136 we detect. Top 15 countries shown, so these do not sum to 100%. Domains with no matching company record are not represented here and skew small and independent.
Cisco Email Security Market Share Among Email Security
What is Cisco Email Security's market share? It holds 1.47% of the Email Security category and ranks #9 of 12 tracked products, on 11,136 domains. Every rule in this category reads a domain's mail routing record, so the comparison is like-for-like rather than a mix of methods: Mimecast sits on 72,226 domains, MailChannels on 67,767, Barracuda on 66,670 and Proofpoint on 55,941, each at least five times Cisco's count. The category stays small because only organisations that deliberately put a gateway in front of their mail appear in it at all, which makes 1.47% a measure of live gateway deployments rather than of Cisco's security business, on our September 2026 counts at TechnologyChecker.io.
Top Competitors by Market Share
Cisco Email Security Customers by Company Size & Age
Is Cisco Email Security only for large enterprises? No, but the enterprise weight is real: 1,365 of the 7,976 companies with a size on record employ more than 1,000 people, 17.11%, even though 1-10 is still the largest single band at 24.13%, ahead of 51-200 (19.86%) and 11-50 (17.85%). Read the small end with the unit in mind, because Cisco writes a per-customer allocation into the MX hostname and we grouped a sample by it: 323 domains with a readable allocation resolve to 228 separate accounts, 1.42 domains each, the largest holding 21 domains and 42.7% of sampled domains sitting in an account with more than one. A two-person domain on this list is often a subsidiary brand inside a much bigger contract, not a small customer.
Company Size Distribution
Company Age (Founded Decade)
Cisco Email Security's base is old. Pre-1960 is the largest founding band at 23.08% of the 5,048 companies with a founding year, and 1,945 of them, 38.53%, were founded before 1980. The 2000s (15.79%) and 2010s (15.57%) follow closely, while the 2020s reach only 4.97%, which is what a mail gateway sold to banks, insurers and governments looks like in an age chart.
What Industries Use Cisco Email Security the Most?
Financial Services is the largest industry at 8.38% of the 7,542 companies with an industry on record, close to double Hospitals and Health Care at 4.47%, with IT Services (3.73%), Insurance (3.54%) and Construction (3.21%) behind it. Group the regulated verticals and the pattern sharpens: financial services, healthcare, insurance, banking and government administration come to 1,622 companies, 21.51% of the base. That is the buying pattern for an inbound mail gateway, where the driver is compliance and targeted phishing rather than mail volume, based on our enriched company data.
Financial services companies using Cisco Email Security form its largest vertical at 8.38%, and the named examples are the ones you would expect: Allianz, Santander, RBC, MetLife and Progressive all route head-office mail through it. Healthcare organisations using Cisco Email Security account for another 4.47%, including Johnson & Johnson, AbbVie and Baxter. Government bodies on Cisco Email Security reach 2.67%, among them France Travail, the French national employment agency, based on our enriched company data.
Cisco Email Security Alternatives & Competitors
The comparison that holds in Email Security is against the other gateways organisations put in front of their mail, and it is unusually clean here because every rule in the category reads a mail routing record. Mimecast sits on 72,226 domains, Barracuda on 66,670 and Proofpoint on 55,941, against Cisco's 11,136. The competitor actually taking Cisco's domains is not in that table: 443 domains dropped the gateway and now route straight to Microsoft 365, more than five times the 84 that moved to Proofpoint. Two larger rows in that table are a different thing: Jellyfish (103,189) and MailChannels (67,767) are the mail infrastructure of hosting providers, which arrives with a hosting plan rather than being shortlisted against a gateway. Four of four Jellyfish domains we checked route to mx*-hosting.jellyfish.systems and belong to small businesses.

Cisco Email Security Customer Migration
A domain publishes one inbound mail path, so every row here is a replacement rather than an overlapping licence. The dominant flow leaves the category altogether: 443 domains left Cisco for Microsoft 365 (145 of them in the last 30 days) against 84 to Proofpoint, and both clear their base rate by a distance, with 69.65% of the 636 full leavers now answering to Microsoft against 5.15% of the domains that stayed, a 13.5x lift, and Proofpoint reading 13.21% of leavers against 0.41% of stayers, 32x. This is not one customer unplugging: the moves spread across many dates, the largest single day accounting for 40 of the 443, and Microsoft sends 84 domains back the other way. Our Mimecast page reads the same shape from a different base, that a gateway's real competitor is the mail platform's own bundled security rather than another gateway.

Tech Stack of Cisco Email Security-Powered Websites
Microsoft 365 appears on 5.15% of the 11,126 live Cisco domains, which looks impossible for two rules that both read mail routing until you open the records: on the six we checked live, Cisco sits at the lowest MX preference with Outlook behind it, and nicoletcollege.edu publishes Cisco at 10 and Outlook at 100. That is Cisco filtering inbound mail in front of Microsoft mailboxes, and 5.15% is a floor, because most gateway customers hand mail to Microsoft privately and publish no Outlook MX at all. Everything else in this table describes the websites rather than the mail path: WordPress on 32.84% and Cloudflare on 33.03%, with Adobe Experience Manager at 6.79%, Drupal at 4.76% and Sitecore at 1.48%, a share of enterprise CMS you do not see on a small-business base, from our live crawl at TechnologyChecker.io.

Expert Analysis: Cisco Email Security Growth Trends & Key Signals for Sales Teams in 2026

I'm Mehmet Suleyman, CEO and co-founder of TechnologyChecker.io. Before this I worked at Microsoft, on Bing search and then its AI team, where I got hands-on with web crawling infrastructure. This analysis covers 11,136 domains routing mail through Cisco Email Security as of our September 2026 crawl, 8,275 of them matched to a company record, a 74.3% enrichment rate. Of everything we publish, this is the mechanism I trust most. The rule is one MX record pointing at Cisco's iphmx.com hosts: live inbound mail routing, not a badge or a DNS token. A detection means mail is flowing through Cisco right now and stops matching the day the customer repoints MX. On a random 400-domain re-check, 393 still routed to Cisco, 98.3%.
Growth trajectory
Four monthly points, 9,229 in June to 11,136 in September, and most of that rise is us rather than Cisco. Of the 4,329 current domains first detected in June, 4,229 were reached by our crawl within three days. July says the same at 1,241 of 1,364. September is the exception: only 45 of its 104 new detections sat on a domain new to us. Read the line as a trend, not a same-domain comparison, because the crawled set turns over every month, dead sites out and newly found ones in, and our detection widens as it goes. The signal itself doesn't flicker: across active rows, average detections equals average scans exactly, 5.04 against 5.04.
Sales Signal: 647 domains have dropped Cisco since we began tracking it in March 2026, 5.8% of the live base. This signal can't flicker, so every one really changed provider.
"Most technology detection is inference. This one isn't. A domain either points its mail at Cisco or it doesn't, and when it stops we know the same week." - Mehmet Suleyman, CEO & Co-founder at TechnologyChecker.io
Customer profile
1,365 of the 7,976 companies with a size on record employ more than 1,000 people, 17.11%, and the age chart agrees: Pre-1960 is the largest founding band at 23.08%, and 38.53% of the 5,048 companies with a founding year predate 1980. Deloitte, Capgemini, Starbucks, Allianz and Santander are all here on head-office domains, not campaign microsites, because a microsite rarely publishes its own mail routing. The 1-10 band is still the largest bucket at 24.13%, and that needs the unit explained. Cisco writes a per-customer allocation into the MX hostname, so we grouped a sample by it: 323 domains resolve to 228 distinct accounts, 1.42 domains per account, the largest holding 21, and 42.7% sit in a multi-domain account.
Sales Signal: treat this as 1.4 domains per buying centre and dedupe by MX allocation first, or you'll call one procurement team three times.
Industry and geographic concentration
Financial Services leads at 8.38% of the 7,542 companies with an industry, and the regulated block, financial services plus healthcare, insurance, banking and government administration, comes to 1,622 companies, 21.51%, and no other single industry reaches 5%. This is less American than most enterprise software we track: the US is 3,285 of 8,107 matched companies, 40.52%, while the eight European countries in our top fifteen add to 2,170, 26.77%. Germany is second at 523, with Spain (355) and France (298) both ahead of the UK (289).
Sales Signal: Germany, Spain and France hold 1,176 matched companies between them, more than a third of the US total, and they are the least contested end of this list.
Migration patterns
Mail routing is exclusive, so every row in the migration table is a replacement. 443 domains moved from Cisco to Microsoft 365, 145 in the last 30 days, against 84 to Proofpoint. Both clear the test we apply before publishing a corridor: of the 636 that left Cisco entirely, 69.65% now route to Microsoft against 5.15% of those that stayed, a 13.5x lift on a 5.3:1 direction ratio, while Proofpoint reads 13.21% of leavers against 0.41% of stayers, 32x on 84:1. No burst, no single customer: the largest single day is 40 of the 443. Microsoft also returns 84 domains, with Google Workspace sending 22. Our Mimecast page found the same shape from a different base.
Sales Signal: two lists, two pitches. The 443 on Microsoft are a layered-defence audience; the 84 on Proofpoint prove a standalone gateway still wins here.
"Cisco loses more than five times as many domains to Microsoft as to Proofpoint. A mail gateway's real competitor stopped being another gateway a while ago; it's the mailbox provider bundling good enough into the licence." - Mehmet Suleyman, CEO & Co-founder at TechnologyChecker.io
Technology ecosystem
One line needs explaining before anyone quotes it. Microsoft 365 appears on 5.15% of the 11,126 live domains, and both rules read the MX record, so on paper they should be mutually exclusive. They aren't: a domain can publish several mail hosts at different preferences. We checked six live and every one had Cisco at the lowest preference with Outlook behind it, nicoletcollege.edu publishing Cisco at 10 and Outlook at 100. That is Cisco filtering in front of Microsoft mailboxes, and 5.15% is a floor, because most gateway customers hand mail to Microsoft privately with no public Outlook MX.
The rest of the table is the web, not the mail path: WordPress on 32.84% and Cloudflare on 33.03%. One figure we cut before publishing: Apple iCloud Mail would have read 15.7% here, because its rule ORs MX with a TXT apple-domain token, and on four of four sampled domains that token was a stale verification string while mail went to Cisco.
Sales Signal: the 573 domains publishing both Cisco and Microsoft mail hosts already pay twice for mail security, so a consolidation pitch lands on an existing budget.
What the data cannot tell you
Three limits. We see the gateway, not the mailbox behind it: unless a domain also publishes its platform's MX, we can't tell whether Cisco is filtering for Exchange, Microsoft 365 or something else, which is why 5.15% is a floor. Cisco Secure Email Threat Defense is a different, API-based product that sits inside the mailbox rather than the MX path, and we don't measure it. And the count is domains, not customers: at 1.42 per account, 11,136 domains is closer to 7,800 buying relationships. On reviews, G2's gateway listing, Cisco IronPort, averages 4.3 out of 5 from 22 reviews, too thin for a pros and cons table.
Key takeaways
1. The mechanism is the story. One MX clause, 393 of 400 sampled domains still routing to Cisco, detections equal to scans.
2. Mid-market and enterprise. 17.11% employ more than 1,000 people; 38.53% predate 1980.
3. The unit is the account. 1.42 domains per account, 42.7% inside a multi-domain contract.
4. The pressure comes from Microsoft. 443 domains out to Microsoft 365 against 84 to Proofpoint, a 13.5x lift.
5. The number is a floor twice over. The 5.15% overlap understates the gateway-in-front pattern; Threat Defense leaves no trace.
Sales applications
Outreach angle: "Your MX points at Cisco's iphmx.com hosts, so inbound mail runs through the Secure Email Gateway. We've watched 443 domains move off it to Microsoft 365 and 84 to Proofpoint. Worth twenty minutes on where yours is heading?" Targeting: on TechnologyChecker.io, filter to 1,000+ employees in financial services, insurance and healthcare, then intersect with the 573 that also publish a Microsoft 365 mail host. Competitive angle: the 145 that left for Microsoft in the last 30 days have just reopened a budget.
Every figure above comes from our crawl and enrichment: 11,136 domains routing mail through Cisco Email Security and 8,275 enriched companies. Filter them by size, country and industry, or set them against Mimecast and the rest of the Email Security category.
Frequently Asked Questions
Who uses Cisco Email Security?
We detect Cisco Email Security on 11,136 domains, including Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu Limited, Capgemini Consulting, Starbucks Corp.. A detection means the technology is present on that domain, which for large organisations is often a single storefront or subdomain rather than a company-wide deployment. Among domains we matched to a company with a resolved industry, the most common is Financial Services (8.38%).
How many customers does Cisco Email Security have?
We detect 11,136 domains running Cisco Email Security across our monthly crawl of live business domains. Company data could be matched for 8,275 of them (74.3%), and every company-size, industry and country breakdown on this page describes that matched subset rather than the full detected base. A further 647 domains carried a Cisco Email Security detection previously and no longer do.
What is Cisco Email Security's market share?
Cisco Email Security holds 1.47% of the Email Security category, ranking #9. This is a share of the domains we detect running a platform in this category — not a share of all websites, and not a share of spending — so it is not directly comparable to figures published on other denominators.
What are the best alternatives to Cisco Email Security?
The top alternatives to Cisco Email Security include Jellyfish (13.66% market share), Mimecast (9.56% market share), MailChannels (8.97% market share), Barracuda (8.83% market share) — measured as a share of the domains we detect running a platform in this category.
Which countries use Cisco Email Security the most?
United States leads with 3,285 matched Cisco Email Security domains, followed by Germany (523), Canada (452), Spain (355), France (298). These are counts within the 8,275 domains we could match to a company record, not the full detected base.
What size companies use Cisco Email Security?
The most common company size is 1-10 employees, representing 24.13% of the Cisco Email Security domains we could match to a company record and size — a subset of 8,275 matched companies, not of all 11,136 detected domains. This is followed by 11-50 employees (17.85%) and 51-200 employees (19.86%).
How old are companies that use Cisco Email Security?
Among the Cisco Email Security domains we could match to a company with a known founding date, the largest group was founded in the Pre-1960 (23.08%), followed by the 2000s (15.79%). That matched subset is drawn from 8,275 companies and is not representative of all 11,136 detected domains. This suggests Cisco Email Security is most popular among established companies.

What is IPHMX?
IPHMX stands for IronPort Hosted Mail eXchange. It is the domain family, iphmx.com, that Cisco uses for the mail hosts in its cloud email gateway, and the SOA record for iphmx.com names stbu-hostmaster@cisco.com, Cisco's Security Technology Business Unit. If a domain's MX points at an iphmx.com host, Cisco is filtering its inbound mail. We currently read 11,136 such domains.
What is Cisco IronPort called now?
Cisco bought IronPort in 2007 and sold the product as the Email Security Appliance, or ESA, for years afterwards. Cisco now markets the on-premises and hosted versions as Cisco Secure Email Gateway and Cisco Secure Email Cloud Gateway. The older umbrella name, Cisco Email Security, is still what most people search for, and the mail hosts kept the IronPort initials in iphmx.com.
Does Cisco do email security?
Yes. Cisco's gateway filters inbound mail before it reaches the mailbox, and our crawl finds 11,136 domains routing mail through it right now, among them Deloitte, Starbucks, Allianz and Johnson & Johnson. That puts Cisco ninth of the twelve products we track in Email Security, on a 1.47% share of the domains we see running a mail gateway.
What is a Cisco Secure Email Gateway?
It is a mail gateway that sits in front of your mailboxes. You point the domain's MX record at Cisco's iphmx.com hosts, Cisco scans inbound mail for phishing, malware and spam, then passes the clean mail on to Exchange, Microsoft 365 or whatever you run. Because the MX record is public, the deployment is visible in DNS, which is how we count it.
Is Cisco Secure Email Threat Defense the same thing?
No, and our data does not cover it. Threat Defense is an API-based product that inspects mail inside the mailbox after delivery, so it never appears in a domain's MX record and leaves no DNS trace for us to read. The 11,136 domains on this page are gateway deployments only. An organisation could run Threat Defense and never appear here.
Is Cisco Secure Email Cloud Gateway different from Cisco Email Security?
They are the same product line under different names. Cisco Email Security is the older umbrella term covering the IronPort-derived appliance and the hosted service, while Cisco Secure Email Gateway and Cisco Secure Email Cloud Gateway are the current names. Our detection reads Cisco's hosted mail hosts, so any deployment publishing an iphmx.com MX record is counted on this page.
How can you tell if a company uses Cisco Email Security?
Look up the domain's MX record. Run dig MX example.com, or nslookup -type=mx example.com on Windows, and if any answer ends in iphmx.com then that organisation's inbound mail routes through Cisco's gateway. You can verify every company on this page the same way in about ten seconds, which is the point of building a list on a public DNS record.
Can you use Cisco Email Security with Microsoft 365?
Yes, and it is a common setup. MX points at Cisco, Cisco filters the mail, then relays it to Microsoft. In our data 5.15% of Cisco domains also publish a Microsoft 365 mail host, with Cisco at the lower MX preference and Outlook behind it. The true share is higher, because many gateway customers hand mail to Microsoft privately.
Are companies leaving Cisco Email Security for Microsoft 365?
Some are, and it is the largest outbound flow we measure. 443 domains have moved from Cisco to Microsoft 365, 145 of them in the last 30 days, against 84 that went to Proofpoint, while Microsoft sends 84 back the other way. Of the 636 domains that left Cisco entirely, 69.65% now route to Microsoft against 5.15% of those that stayed.
How accurate is this list of Cisco Email Security customers?
We re-checked a random sample of 400 domains from this list on September 23, 2026. 393 still routed mail to Cisco, 98.3%. Four had no MX record at all and three had genuinely moved, two to Barracuda and one to Microsoft. Because the rule reads live mail routing rather than a page element, a domain leaves the list the day it repoints MX.
How many domains does one Cisco Email Security account cover?
About 1.42 in our sample. Cisco writes a per-customer allocation into the MX hostname, so we grouped 323 domains with a readable allocation and they resolved to 228 distinct accounts. The largest single account held 21 domains, and 42.7% of sampled domains sat in an account with more than one, so 11,136 domains is closer to 7,800 customers.
How much does Cisco Secure Email cost per month?
Cisco does not publish a monthly price for Secure Email. It is sold through Cisco's partner channel on term subscriptions, and what you pay depends on mailbox count, licence tier and term length, so the figure comes from a partner quote rather than a pricing page. Our data covers deployments instead of spend: we can tell you who runs it, not what they pay.
Is the Cisco Secure Email Encryption Service legit?
Yes. It is a genuine Cisco service that delivers encrypted mail as a secure message you open in a browser after registering, which is why the notification looks unusual next to ordinary email. Before clicking anything, run an MX lookup on the sender's domain: if it answers with an iphmx.com host, the notification matches how that organisation actually routes mail.
