Companies Using Proofpoint
Our live crawl finds 53,149 domains routing mail through Proofpoint, and 42,005 of them resolve to an identifiable organisation. Named users include Accenture, IBM, PwC, Bank of America, Wells Fargo, Oracle, FedEx, Pfizer and Kaiser Permanente.
What we read is the domain's MX record, the DNS entry that says where inbound mail is delivered. If a domain's MX points at Proofpoint's mail hosts, Proofpoint is filtering that organisation's mail right now. That makes this a live operational fact rather than a licence or an account marker, and it makes the count self-cleaning: an organisation that leaves changes its MX the same day, and the signal goes with it. It also fixes what the number covers. This is the enterprise gateway and nothing else, the mail routed through Proofpoint's pphosted.com hosts. Proofpoint Essentials, the gateway sold to smaller organisations, answers on separate mail hosts and is not inside the 53,149, and the rest of the product line leaves no trace in DNS at all. Read 53,149 as an accurate census of the enterprise gateway and a floor for Proofpoint's reach in email security.
Financial Services is 11.64% of the 37,391 companies with a recorded industry, 2.4 times Hospitals and Health Care at 4.79%, and nothing else reaches 5%. Add Insurance and Medical Practices and the regulated block is 8,861 companies, 23.7% of the base. The age chart points the same way: Pre-1960 is the largest founding band at 20.12%, ahead of the 2010s.
Against the other gateways organisations put in front of their mail, 53,149 sits inside a tight band: Mimecast on 69,123 domains, MailChannels on 65,764, Barracuda on 64,320, Proofpoint on 53,149, Sophos on 46,240 and Hornetsecurity on 41,397, six products inside 27,726 domains. Mimecast is the one worth comparing against, because we detect it from an MX record exactly as we detect this: a gap of 15,974 domains on an identical method. Data current to our August 2026 rollup.

Proofpoint Usage Statistics
Proofpoint reads 43,951 domains on our June 2026 rollup, 52,612 in July and 53,149 in August. Three points cannot carry a growth rate, and this movement is coverage rather than adoption. Two things move underneath it. The domain set turns over every month as dead sites drop out and newly found ones come in, and the set of signals we can match keeps widening, so a rise here means we saw more of the same population rather than that the population grew. The August figure is the one quoted at the top of this page.

Which Countries Use Proofpoint the Most?
Which countries use Proofpoint the most? The United States leads with 23,214 of the 42,005 companies we could match, 55.26%, and nothing is close behind it: the United Kingdom is second on 2,169, 5.16%. The row worth reading twice is New Zealand, seventh on 1,207 companies, ahead of both Spain and Italy. Australia and New Zealand together hold 3,101 companies against the United Kingdom's 2,169, which is the reverse of what Mimecast shows, where Britain alone is a quarter of the base. We are reporting the shape here rather than explaining it. Five English-speaking countries account for 30,328 companies, 72.2% of the located base.
Share of the 42,005 Proofpoint domains we matched to a company record — 79.0% of the 53,149 we detect. Top 15 countries shown, so these do not sum to 100%. Domains with no matching company record are not represented here and skew small and independent.
Proofpoint Market Share Among Email Security
What is Proofpoint's market share? Proofpoint holds 7.39% of Email Security, 53,149 of the 718,968 domains we detect running an email security product. Set against the other gateways organisations put in front of their mail, that is a narrow band rather than a hierarchy: Mimecast (9.61%), MailChannels (9.15%), Barracuda (8.95%), Proofpoint (7.39%), Sophos (6.43%) and Hornetsecurity (5.76%) fit inside 3.85 percentage points. Read it as the enterprise gateway alone, because Proofpoint Essentials answers on separate mail hosts and is not in the 53,149, which makes 7.39% a floor rather than a ceiling, on our August 2026 counts at TechnologyChecker.io.
Top Competitors by Market Share
Proofpoint Customers by Company Size & Age
What size companies use Proofpoint? Larger ones than the top row of the chart suggests. 1-10 is the biggest single band at 31.01% of the 40,524 companies that report a headcount, but 47.19% sit between 11 and 500 staff and 12,931 companies, 31.91%, employ more than 200. Mimecast, which we detect the same way in the same category, sits at 25.53% in that smallest band. A mail gateway is bought by an organisation with somebody accountable for mail risk, and the distribution shows it. The named list further down reads nothing like this because it is ordered by LinkedIn following.
Company Size Distribution
Company Age (Founded Decade)
Pre-1960 is the largest founding band at 20.12% of the 23,692 companies with a founding year, ahead of the 2010s at 19.71%. That ordering appears on fewer than one profile in twenty that we publish, and it is the signature of software sold to institutions rather than to startups. 42.25% of this base was founded before 1990 and 56.68% before 2000. Pfizer dates to 1848, Scotiabank to 1832, HSBC to 1865, AT&T to 1885, Ford to 1903 and the United States Postal Service to 1776. Mimecast, its nearest peer in this category, puts 16.85% in the pre-1960 band.
What Industries Use Proofpoint the Most?
Financial Services leads at 11.64% of the 37,391 companies with a recorded industry, 2.4 times Hospitals and Health Care at 4.79%. No other industry reaches 5%. Add Insurance (3.94%) and Medical Practices (3.32%) to the first two and the regulated block is 8,861 companies, 23.7% of the base; counting Banking (1.9%) as well takes it to 9,572 and 25.6%. Email security is bought hardest where an intercepted invoice or a leaked patient file is a reportable event rather than an inconvenience.
Financial services companies using Proofpoint are the largest vertical on this page at 11.64%, and the named list carries the same weight: Bank of America, Wells Fargo, HSBC, Scotiabank, AXA and State Farm all route inbound mail through it. Healthcare organisations on Proofpoint form the second cluster once the labels are added together, Hospitals and Health Care (4.79%) plus Medical Practices (3.32%) coming to 3,034 companies and 8.11%, with HCA Healthcare, Kaiser Permanente, Optum, UnitedHealth Group and Abbott among them. Government bodies using Proofpoint take a smaller 1.5%, a share that includes the United States Postal Service, based on our enriched company data.
Proofpoint Alternatives & Competitors
The comparison that holds is against the other gateways organisations put in front of their mail. Mimecast is the cleanest of them, because we read it from an MX record exactly as we read Proofpoint: 69,123 domains against 53,149, a gap of 15,974 on one identical method. MailChannels (65,764) and Barracuda (64,320) sit between those two, Sophos (46,240) and Hornetsecurity (41,397) sit below, and the six together fit inside 27,726 domains, so nobody in this band is running away with it. The whole Email Security category is 718,968 domains, small because only organisations that deliberately put a gateway in front of their mail appear in it at all. One scope note before you read Proofpoint's position in that band: this page counts the enterprise gateway, the mail routed through pphosted.com. Proofpoint Essentials, the gateway sold to smaller organisations, answers on separate hosts and is not in the 53,149, which makes this figure a floor for Proofpoint's reach in email security rather than a measure of it.

Proofpoint Customer Migration
We publish a switching corridor only when we have measured one, and Proofpoint has not been through that work yet, so there is no table here rather than an empty one. What we can report is turnover, and it is low. 1,332 domains have stopped routing mail through Proofpoint since mid-March, 716 of them in the last 30 days, which is 2.5% of the 53,149 live. Read the window before the number: 1,306 of those 1,332 fall inside the last 90 days, which says more about when this signal came under observation than about anything Proofpoint did. The reason the rate is this low is the mechanism. A DNS record does not flicker the way a page-based signal does, so a drop here is usually a real change of provider rather than a missed crawl.
Tech Stack of Proofpoint-Powered Websites
This table needs a caveat the others do not. Proofpoint is read from a DNS record and everything below is read from web pages, so none of it touches the mail path. It is a portrait of the websites belonging to organisations whose mail Proofpoint filters, which is still useful, just not the same system. What it shows is an older web: jQuery on 73.01%, jQuery Migrate on 32.52% and jQuery UI on 22.4%, and jQuery Migrate exists only to keep code written for an earlier jQuery working. Google Tag Manager reaches 71.46% and Google Analytics 63.76%. Cloudflare is on 43.71%, while WordPress sits at 30.6%, well under the 46.07% on Mimecast domains, which fits a base of banks, hospitals and insurers rather than small firms on a template.

Expert Analysis: Proofpoint Growth Trends & Key Signals for Sales Teams in 2026

An MX record is not a licence
Most counts on this site read something a website chose to put on a page. This one reads DNS. Proofpoint is identified from a domain's MX records pointing at Proofpoint's mail hosts, which means the thing we are measuring is live mail routing rather than a purchase. If accenture.com publishes those records, Accenture's inbound mail is passing through Proofpoint while you read this. I would rather have that than a page tag any day, and the reason is what happens when a customer leaves: they change their MX the same afternoon, and the signal goes with them. Nothing lingers.
You can see that in the churn. 1,332 domains have stopped routing mail through Proofpoint since mid-March, 2.5% of the 53,149 live. A page-based signal on a base this size churns at several times that rate, and much of what it reports is measurement rather than departure, because a script can fail to load or a page can time out and the domain reads as gone. A DNS record either resolves or it does not. If you want the mechanics of how these signals differ we wrote up the detection methods behind them.
A page tag tells you somebody bought something once. An MX record tells you their mail is going through it right now, and it stops telling you the day they leave.
The limit is worth stating with the same directness. This measures one gateway, the enterprise one at pphosted.com, and nothing else. Proofpoint Essentials, the gateway sold to smaller organisations, answers on separate mail hosts and is not inside this figure. Proofpoint also sells archiving, training and several other things that leave no trace in DNS, so an organisation running those without pointing its mail at pphosted.com is invisible to us. Read 53,149 as an accurate census of the enterprise gateway and a floor for the company.
A quarter of this base is finance or healthcare
Financial Services is 11.64% of the 37,391 companies with a recorded industry, 2.4 times Hospitals and Health Care at 4.79%, and nothing else reaches 5%. Most industry charts we publish are flatter than that, with the leader and the runner-up separated by a point or two. Add Insurance (3.94%) and Medical Practices (3.32%) and the regulated block is 8,861 companies, 23.7% of the base. Counting Banking as well makes it 9,572 and 25.6%, so a quarter of everything here is finance, insurance or healthcare.
The age chart says the same thing in a different language. Pre-1960 is the largest founding band at 20.12%, ahead of the 2010s, and 42.25% of this base was founded before 1990. Pfizer dates to 1848, HSBC to 1865, Scotiabank to 1832, the United States Postal Service to 1776. That ordering shows up on fewer than one profile in twenty that we publish. What it describes is an organisation that has had a compliance obligation for longer than email has existed, and treats the mail gateway as part of the control environment rather than as a tool it might swap next year.
Contrast that with the size chart, which looks small at first glance. 1-10 is the biggest band at 31.01%, but 47.19% of the base employs between 11 and 500 and 31.91% employs more than 200. Mimecast, which we detect the same way, has 25.53% in the smallest band. Neither of these is a small-business product. Both charts are being read from the same DNS fact, which is what makes the comparison worth anything.
New Zealand outranks Italy, and Britain is smaller than it looks
The United States is 55.26% of the located base, which is unremarkable. The rest is not. New Zealand ranks seventh on 1,207 companies, ahead of Spain and Italy, and Australia plus New Zealand together hold 3,101 against the United Kingdom's 2,169. New Zealand outranking both Italy and Spain on a US security product is the sort of row I check twice before publishing.
I am not going to invent a cause for it. What I will say is that the same category contains the opposite pattern: on Mimecast, Britain is roughly a quarter of the located base, against 5.16% here. Two gateways, one detection method, one category, and outside America their maps barely overlap. I have no evidence for why, and I am not going to guess in public.
Why this page has no migration table
Because we have not measured one. The pairwise switching work has not been run for Proofpoint, and I would rather ship a page with a gap in it than infer a corridor from churn counts, which is the most common way these numbers go wrong. A drop and a gain in the same month are not a switch until you have checked that the same domains are on both sides of it.
What the turnover figures do support is a statement about stability. 716 domains dropped in the last 30 days and 1,332 since mid-March, and 1,306 of those 1,332 fall inside the last 90 days, which reflects when the signal came under observation more than anything in the market. At 2.5% of the live base this sits in the quietest tenth of the profiles we publish, and the mechanism rather than customer loyalty is what puts it there.
Low churn on a DNS signal is not loyalty. It is that DNS does not lie about whether something is still there.
The stack on this page measures a different system
Every overlap percentage below the fold is read from a web page, and Proofpoint is read from DNS, so this table is not Proofpoint's stack. It is a portrait of the websites belonging to organisations whose mail Proofpoint filters, and nothing in it touches the mail path. Once you read it that way it is genuinely informative, mostly about how old these sites are: jQuery on 73.01%, jQuery Migrate on 32.52%, and jQuery Migrate exists only to stop code written for an older jQuery from breaking.
The row I keep coming back to is WordPress at 30.6%, against 46.07% on Mimecast domains. WordPress share is a decent proxy for how much of a base is small firms on a template, and a fifteen-point gap between two products in the same category is the size chart showing up again in a different table. Cloudflare at 43.71% and Google Tag Manager at 71.46% are what you would expect from anyone with a marketing team.
What to take from this
Proofpoint holds 7.39% of our Email Security category on 53,149 domains, and the honest way to place that is beside the other gateways organisations put in front of their mail: Mimecast 69,123, MailChannels 65,764, Barracuda 64,320, Proofpoint 53,149, Sophos 46,240, Hornetsecurity 41,397. Six products inside 27,726 domains, which is a band rather than a hierarchy, and Mimecast is the only one of them I would set beside Proofpoint number for number, because it is the one we read from the same kind of record.
If you sell into this base, the segment to isolate is the regulated quarter: 8,861 companies in finance, healthcare and insurance, skewing old, skewing mid-market, and moving slowly in both directions. The number to argue with is 53,149, and the honest thing to say about it is that it is exactly right for the enterprise gateway and too low for the company. TechnologyChecker.io resolves it against 42,005 identified organisations and refreshes it every month.
Frequently Asked Questions
Who uses Proofpoint?
Our live crawl finds Proofpoint on 53,149 domains, of which 42,005 resolve to an identifiable organisation. Named users include Accenture, IBM, PwC, Bank of America, Wells Fargo, Oracle, FedEx and Kaiser Permanente. The base tilts hard toward regulated industries: Financial Services alone is 11.64% of the companies with a recorded industry, and no other sector reaches 5%.
How many customers does Proofpoint have?
We detect Proofpoint on 53,149 active domains as of our August 2026 rollup, and 42,005 of those match to a company record, 79.03%. Counts are domains, not seats or contracts. The figure covers the enterprise mail gateway only, because it is read from the domain's MX record, so an organisation using other Proofpoint products without routing its mail through them is not in this number.
What is Proofpoint's market share?
Proofpoint holds 7.39% of our Email Security category, 53,149 of the 718,968 domains we detect running an email security product. Set against the other gateways organisations put in front of their mail it sits below Mimecast (9.61%), MailChannels (9.15%) and Barracuda (8.95%) and above Sophos (6.43%) and Hornetsecurity (5.76%), six products inside 3.85 percentage points. This is a share of detected domains, not of spending or of all mailboxes, and it covers the enterprise gateway alone: Proofpoint Essentials answers on separate mail hosts and is not in the 53,149.
What are the best alternatives to Proofpoint?
By deployment the neighbours are Mimecast (69,123 domains), MailChannels (65,764), Barracuda (64,320), Sophos (46,240) and Hornetsecurity (41,397). Mimecast is the closest comparison of the five, since it is a gateway bought and deployed the same way and we read it from an MX record exactly as we read Proofpoint. The option that never shows up in a count like this one is adding no gateway at all and living with whatever filtering the mail platform already includes, which is a decision not to buy rather than a choice between these five.
Which countries use Proofpoint the most?
The United States leads with 23,214 matched companies, 55.26% of the 42,005 we could place, followed by the United Kingdom on 2,169 (5.16%), Australia on 1,894 (4.51%), Canada on 1,844 (4.39%) and Germany on 1,498 (3.57%). New Zealand is seventh on 1,207, ahead of Spain and Italy, and Australia plus New Zealand together outweigh the United Kingdom.
What size companies use Proofpoint?
1-10 is the largest band at 31.01% of the 40,524 matched companies that report a headcount, followed by 11-50 at 19.1% and 51-200 at 17.98%. The middle is where the weight actually sits: 47.19% employ between 11 and 500, and 12,931 companies, 31.91%, employ more than 200. Only 1,433 companies, 3.54%, are in the 10,001-plus band.
How old are companies that use Proofpoint?
Pre-1960 is the largest founding band at 20.12% of the 23,692 companies with a founding year, narrowly ahead of the 2010s at 19.71% and the 2000s at 18.01%. 42.25% of this base predates 1990 and 56.68% predates 2000. Only 5.6% were founded in the 2020s. Pfizer dates to 1848, Scotiabank to 1832 and the United States Postal Service to 1776.
What is the ideal customer profile for Proofpoint?
A regulated organisation with someone accountable for mail risk, most often in the United States, and more often old than new. Financial services, healthcare, insurance and banking are the four heaviest sectors, Pre-1960 leads the age chart at 20.12%, and 47.19% of the base employs between 11 and 500 people. The detection is the domain's MX record, so every one of these is routing live mail through Proofpoint.
What does a Proofpoint detection actually mean?
It means the domain publishes MX records pointing at Proofpoint's enterprise mail hosts, pphosted.com, so inbound mail for that domain is being filtered by Proofpoint right now. It is not a licence count, a seat count or a historical marker. It also covers that one gateway: Proofpoint Essentials answers on separate mail hosts and is not in the 53,149, and the rest of the product line leaves no trace in DNS at all. Read the number as an accurate census of the enterprise gateway and a floor for the company.
How does Proofpoint compare with Mimecast?
It is the one clean comparison in this category, because we identify both from an MX record. Mimecast is on 69,123 domains and Proofpoint on 53,149, a gap of 15,974 on an identical method. The bases differ in shape: Britain is roughly a quarter of Mimecast's located companies, while Proofpoint's is 5.16% British and 55.26% American, with Australia and New Zealand together outweighing the United Kingdom.
How many companies have stopped using Proofpoint?
1,332 domains have stopped routing mail through Proofpoint since mid-March, 716 of them in the last 30 days, which is 2.5% of the 53,149 currently live. Read the window with the number, since 1,306 of those 1,332 land inside the last 90 days. The rate is low because a DNS record does not flicker: a domain either publishes Proofpoint's mail hosts or it does not.
Is Proofpoint mostly used by large enterprises?
Less than the named list suggests. All 34 companies shown on this page employ more than 10,000 people, but that band is only 3.54% of the 40,524 matched companies with a headcount. The list is ordered by LinkedIn following, which selects for size. The real centre of the base is 11 to 500 employees, at 47.19%.
What technologies do Proofpoint customers run alongside it?
The overlap table on this page measures websites, not mail, so treat it as a portrait of these organisations' sites rather than of their mail stack. jQuery appears on 73.01% of them, Google Tag Manager on 71.46%, Google Analytics on 63.76% and Cloudflare on 43.71%. WordPress sits at 30.6%, below the 46.07% we see on Mimecast domains.
