Companies Using Venmo

Our crawl currently finds 165,379 live storefronts advertising Venmo at checkout. That ranks it #10 of the 50 payment methods we track, on 2.07% of the category. The list is heavily American and heavily small, though it does include the merch shops of Whataburger, Peloton, Fender, Reebok and the BBC.

Two numbers shape everything else on this page. 99.95% of these domains also run Shopify, and 100% of them also run PayPal. Neither is a coincidence, and both are explained further down, because they change what the headline count actually measures.

Of the 165,379 domains we matched 27,049 to company records. That is a 16.4% match rate, the lowest of any payment method we have profiled, and it is itself a finding: the typical Venmo storefront is too small to have a company page anywhere.

Venmo Usage Statistics

Venmo sat under 200 domains for its first seven years. It was a phone app for splitting dinner, not a checkout button. The line only moves in 2020, when PayPal began surfacing Venmo inside its online checkout, and adoption went from 88 domains in January 2020 to 20,529 a year later. From there it reached 171,100 by April 2025, an 8.3x rise in four years. Two cautions on the chart. The dip after April 2025 is our archive feed narrowing its own universe rather than merchants leaving, which you can see because total domains falls in step with active ones. And the series splices two measurement systems at the 2025 to 2026 gap, so read the step across it as coverage, not growth.

List of Companies Using Venmo

Our verified list of companies using Venmo on TechnologyChecker.io covers 27,049 merchants we could match to company records, out of 165,379 domains where we detect the Venmo badge. That is a 16.4% match rate, well below the 42.8% we get on Afterpay. We show the gap rather than hiding it, because the unmatched majority are one-person Shopify shops with no company page to match against.

There are 165,379 companies and websites using Venmo, sign up to download the entire Venmo dataset.

Here are the most recognisable stores that accept Venmo in our current crawl, ranked by audience size. Look at the subdomains rather than the brand names: shop.bbc.com, store.washingtonpost.com, shop.foxnews.com, apparel.onepeloton.com and shackstore.shakeshack.com. These are merch storefronts, not the main sites, and that is the pattern across most large brands here.

Which Countries Use Venmo the Most?

Which countries use Venmo? The United States accounts for 23,640 enriched merchants, or 92.09%, which is the most concentrated national footprint of any payment method in our index. Canada (1.2%), the United Kingdom (1.01%) and China (0.92%) make up almost all of the rest, and those are overwhelmingly US-facing stores rather than local ones. Venmo accounts are US-only, so the geography here reflects a product limit, not a go-to-market choice.

Venmo Market Share Among Payment Processing

What is Venmo's market share? Venmo sits on 2.07% of the payment methods we track and ranks #10 of 50, behind PayPal (19.28%), Apple Pay (15.56%) and Shop Pay (14.69%). Treat that rank as a floor rather than a verdict. Our signature only fires on storefronts that render a Venmo badge, so the merchants who accept it without advertising it are invisible to us. TechnologyChecker.io publishes the detection basis for exactly this reason.

Venmo Customers by Company Size & Age

Is Venmo just for small sellers? Largely, yes. 68.02% of Venmo merchants employ 1 to 10 people and another 22.79% employ 11 to 50, from our analysis of 27,049 enriched companies. Only 0.06% sit in the 10,001+ band. The recognisable names on this page are real but they are nearly all merch storefronts run by a small team, which is why the company size attached to the domain reads far larger than the shop itself.

What Industries Use Venmo the Most?

Retail leads at 13.22%, and adding Retail Apparel and Fashion (12.42%) plus Retail Luxury Goods and Jewelry (2.63%) pushes explicit retail past 28%. The tail is where Venmo differs from the card networks: Wellness and Fitness Services (4.96%), Food and Beverage Services (3.02%), Personal Care Product Manufacturing (2.89%) and Sporting Goods Manufacturing (1.81%). These are low-ticket, repeat-purchase categories aimed at the under-35 shoppers who already have the app.

Manufacturing1,106 (5.51%)
Wellness and Fitness Services996 (4.96%)
Food and Beverage Services606 (3.02%)
Personal Care Product Manufacturing580 (2.89%)

Retail companies using Venmo form the biggest block at 2,653 enriched merchants, with apparel close behind at 2,493. Manufacturing at 5.51% looks out of place until you check the domains: they are brands like Reebok, Fender and Mattel selling direct through a storefront subdomain. Wellness and Fitness Services at 4.96% is the segment worth watching, because supplement and fitness brands lean hardest on the same young US audience Venmo already owns.

Venmo Alternatives & Competitors

The category table puts Venmo tenth behind PayPal, but that framing is wrong. Every single Venmo domain we detect, 166,108 of 166,116, also runs PayPal. Venmo is not competing with PayPal in our data, it is a checkout option that the PayPal integration switches on. The methods it genuinely sits alongside are Apple Pay (62.55% of Venmo stores) and Shop Pay (61.78%), and those stack rather than replace.

Expert Analysis: Venmo Growth Trends & Key Signals for Sales Teams in 2026

David Thomson
David ThomsonCTO, TechnologyChecker

I run the detection systems behind this site, so I want to start with the number that nearly stopped us publishing this page at all. Of the 166,116 domains where we detect Venmo, 166,031 also run Shopify. That is 99.95%. Only 85 domains in the entire corpus carry Venmo without Shopify underneath.

When a co-occurrence comes back that lopsided, the first assumption should be that you have found something about your own signature rather than something about the market. So we checked. The identical query returns 43.75% for Afterpay and 93.09% for Sezzle, which tells us the join is discriminating properly and the result is specific to Venmo. Then we read the rule we actually ship.

What the signature really matches

Venmo is detected on two patterns. One is an element labelled with a payment-icon identifier for Venmo. The other is an attribute the PayPal checkout script sets when Venmo is available. The first of those is the convention Shopify themes use to render the little payment logos in a storefront footer, generated from whichever methods the merchant has enabled.

So the honest description of this dataset is narrower than the headline suggests. We are not measuring every site that accepts Venmo. We are measuring storefronts, mostly Shopify ones, that display a Venmo badge to shoppers. Venmo also reaches checkouts on other platforms through PayPal, and those implementations mostly do not expose markup our crawler can read.

A detection count is only as broad as the narrowest thing its signature can match. Ours matches a storefront badge, so the right headline is a floor for one platform, not a census of Venmo acceptance.

I would rather publish that caveat than a bigger number I cannot defend. The 165,379 figure is still the largest verified list of Venmo-accepting storefronts we know of, and it is correct about the merchants it names. It is simply scoped, and readers deserve to know to what.

Venmo is not competing with PayPal

The second number worth sitting with is the PayPal overlap: 166,108 of 166,116 domains, which rounds to 100%. We have not measured a cleaner dependency anywhere in the payments category. Every Venmo storefront we can see runs PayPal too.

That makes the category ranking misleading if you read it the usual way. The table puts PayPal first on 19.28% and Venmo tenth on 2.07%, which invites the conclusion that Venmo is a distant challenger. It is not a challenger at all. PayPal owns Venmo, delivers it through the same gateway, and the merchant decision is a toggle rather than a purchase. Our Venmo list is a strict subset of our PayPal list.

For anyone using this data to build a prospect list, that distinction matters. Pitching a PayPal alternative to a Venmo merchant means pitching against an integration they already run for other reasons, and removing Venmo does not remove PayPal. The reverse also holds: these 165,379 domains are a precise slice of PayPal merchants who have opted into extra wallet coverage, which makes them a good audience for anything that rewards checkout experimentation.

Why there is no switching section on this page

Every other technology profile we publish carries a customer migration table. This one does not, and the reason is worth explaining because it applies to a lot of payments analysis.

We can see 12,796 domains that dropped the Venmo badge since April 2026. Run the standard query and it reports that 2,492 of them moved to Shop Pay, 2,444 to Apple Pay and 2,245 to PayPal. Those look like switching numbers. They are not.

Shop Pay already appears on 61.78% of active Venmo stores, Apple Pay on 62.55% and PayPal on 100%. A merchant who drops the Venmo badge still has all of those, because checkout methods stack. The churned set simply reproduces the ambient mix of payment methods on Shopify, in the same rank order. There is no direction in it.

Ask whether a category multi-homes before you interpret its churn. The same query produces a switch row whether the merchant replaced the old tool or merely stopped advertising it, and the query cannot tell you which.

We found the opposite pattern in buy now, pay later, where under 1% of Afterpay merchants also run a rival, and a switch really is a switch. Payments are the other extreme. So we left the section out rather than dress up a distribution as a decision.

What the merchant profile actually looks like

Venmo merchants are small, American and young. 68.02% employ ten people or fewer, 92.09% are US companies and 46.11% of those with a founding date were incorporated in the 2010s. That is the tightest national concentration in our payments data, and it is a product constraint rather than a strategy, since Venmo accounts are US-only.

The industry mix says more than the size data. Retail leads on 13.22% and apparel follows on 12.42%, but the interesting weight is in wellness and fitness (4.96%), food and beverage (3.02%), personal care (2.89%) and sporting goods (1.81%). Low ticket, repeat purchase, aimed at shoppers young enough to have the app on their phone already.

Our enrichment rate tells the same story from a different angle. We matched only 27,049 of 165,379 domains to a company record, which is 16.4%. On Afterpay the equivalent figure is 42.8%. A low match rate is usually a data problem. Here it is a finding: the median Venmo storefront is too small to have a company page anywhere on the web.

The brand names on this page fit that shape once you look past them. Whataburger, Peloton, the BBC, the Washington Post and Fox News all appear, and every one of them is a merch storefront on a subdomain rather than the main property. shop.bbc.com sells mugs. It is a small Shopify shop wearing a large brand.

How to read the chart

Venmo held under 200 domains until 2020, which is the correct shape for a product that was a phone app for splitting bills. The curve turns when PayPal begins surfacing Venmo inside online checkout, and adoption runs from 88 domains in January 2020 to 20,529 a year later, reaching 171,100 by April 2025. An 8.3x rise in four years is among the steepest we have recorded in payments.

Two things on that chart are measurement, not market. The decline after April 2025 is our archive feed narrowing its own coverage, visible because the total domain count falls in step with the active one, so nobody should read it as merchants leaving. And the gap between 2025 and 2026 is where we changed measurement systems, so the step across it reflects coverage rather than adoption. We publish both seams at TechnologyChecker.io instead of smoothing them away.

My summary for anyone using this page commercially: treat 165,379 as a reliable floor for Shopify storefronts advertising Venmo in the United States, treat the PayPal overlap as a structural fact rather than a competitive one, and do not read the churn as switching. The list of merchants is solid. The framing around it is where most analyses of this category go wrong.

The most common company size is 1-10 employees, representing 68.02% of Venmo customers, based on our analysis of 27,049 enriched companies. This is followed by 11-50 employees (22.79%) and 51-200 employees (6.46%).

How old are companies that use Venmo?

The majority of Venmo customers were founded in the 2010s (46.11%), followed by the 2020s (22.04%), based on our analysis of 27,049 enriched companies. This suggests Venmo is most popular among relatively young companies.

What stores accept Venmo?

Our crawl finds Venmo advertised on 165,379 storefronts. Recognisable names include Whataburger, Peloton, Reebok, Fender, Steve Madden, Revlon, Quiksilver and the Four Seasons shop. Most are far smaller: 68.02% employ ten people or fewer. TechnologyChecker.io tracks the full list and refreshes it as the Venmo badge appears on or disappears from each site.

How many online stores accept Venmo?

We detect Venmo on 165,379 live domains as of August 2026. Read that as a floor rather than a total. Our signature fires when a storefront renders a Venmo payment badge or the Venmo button attribute, so any merchant who accepts Venmo without displaying it does not appear in the count. The true number of accepting stores is higher.

Is Venmo only available on Shopify stores?

No, but our data comes close to saying so. Of 166,116 domains where we detect Venmo, 166,031 also run Shopify, which is 99.95%. Only 85 do not. Venmo is available through PayPal on other platforms too, yet those checkouts rarely expose the markup our crawler reads, so they stay invisible to this dataset.

Do merchants need PayPal to accept Venmo?

In practice, yes. Venmo is owned by PayPal and reaches online checkouts through the PayPal gateway. Our data matches that exactly: all 166,108 enriched Venmo domains also run PayPal, a 100% overlap we see with no other pair of payment methods. A merchant adding Venmo is switching on an option inside an integration they already have.

What big brands accept Venmo?

Four Seasons, Whataburger, Mattel, Revlon, Shake Shack, HarperCollins, Reebok, Peloton, Fender and Steve Madden all show the Venmo badge, and Quiksilver, Farm Rio and rue21 appear too. Nearly all of these run it on a merch subdomain such as shop.whataburger.com or apparel.onepeloton.com rather than the main corporate site, which is typical for large brands selling direct.

Which countries can use Venmo at checkout?

Venmo accounts are limited to the United States, and our merchant data reflects it. 92.09% of enriched Venmo storefronts are US companies, the highest national concentration of any payment method we track. Canada at 1.2% and the United Kingdom at 1.01% are the next largest, and most of those sell primarily into the American market.

What types of business accept Venmo?

Retail leads at 13.22% of enriched merchants, with apparel and fashion close behind on 12.42%. After that the mix tilts toward low-ticket repeat purchases: wellness and fitness at 4.96%, food and beverage at 3.02%, personal care at 2.89% and sporting goods at 1.81%. These categories target the younger American shoppers who already carry the app.

How does Venmo compare with PayPal for merchant reach?

PayPal appears on 1,541,285 domains against Venmo's 165,379, so PayPal's reach is roughly nine times larger. They are not really rivals though. Venmo runs on a strict subset of PayPal merchants, because the Venmo button is delivered by the PayPal gateway rather than by a separate integration a merchant chooses instead.

What payment methods appear alongside Venmo?

Among stores that accept Venmo we also find PayPal on 100%, Apple Pay on 62.55%, Shop Pay on 61.78%, Visa on 41.3%, Mastercard on 41.29% and Google Pay on 38.81%. Checkout methods stack rather than compete, so a merchant adding Venmo is widening the wallet options rather than dropping an existing one.

Do stores that accept Venmo also offer buy now, pay later?

Rarely. Only 1.82% of Venmo storefronts also run Afterpay, 0.75% run Affirm and 0.62% run Sezzle. That is far below the rate at which instalment providers appear across Shopify generally, which suggests Venmo merchants sell baskets small enough that splitting the payment into four instalments adds little for the shopper.

Is Venmo growing as a checkout option?

Sharply, from a standing start. Venmo held under 200 domains through 2019, then reached 20,529 by January 2021 once PayPal surfaced it inside online checkout, and 171,100 by April 2025. That is an 8.3x rise across four years, one of the steepest adoption curves in our payments data over that period.

How many companies have dropped Venmo?

We have watched 12,796 domains remove the Venmo badge since our crawler began covering the technology in April 2026. Treat that as observed churn over a few months, not a lifetime total. Badge markup also changes when a merchant reskins a theme, so some of this is presentation churn rather than a merchant genuinely dropping the option.

How does TechnologyChecker.io detect Venmo?

We match two on-page patterns: the payment icon a storefront theme renders for Venmo, and the Venmo support attribute set by the PayPal checkout script. Both are front-end signals, so we are measuring what a store advertises to shoppers. We are not reading the merchant's gateway configuration, and the page says so plainly.

Can I get a list of stores that accept Venmo?

Yes. This page lists the largest merchants by audience, and TechnologyChecker.io holds the full set of 165,379 detected domains with the subdomain where each detection fired. Because the badge is per subdomain, a brand can appear more than once when it runs separate regional or merch storefronts on the same root domain.
