Our crawl currently finds 79,610 live stores using Afterpay, which is more than every other buy now, pay later provider in our index put together. The list runs from one-person Shopify shops to Old Navy, Skechers, Coach and MAC Cosmetics.

Of those merchants we matched 34,053 to company records, and the profile that comes back is smaller than most people expect: 76.47% employ ten people or fewer. Afterpay's scale comes from the long tail of independent retail, not from enterprise deals.

Below you'll find which countries and industries those stores sit in, what they run alongside Afterpay, and which providers merchants moved to and from over the last 90 days.

Afterpay Usage Statistics

Afterpay first appeared in our detection history in October 2012 on a single domain, and spent its first five years almost entirely inside Australia. Growth turned steep after 2018, when the US launch pulled it into North American retail. One caveat on the chart. The series splices two measurement systems, our long-run detection history through July 2025 and our own live crawl from June 2026, so the step from 30,803 to 67,447 across that gap is a change in crawl coverage, not a year of adoption. The current figure of 79,610 active domains comes from the live crawl.

List of Companies Using Afterpay

Our verified list of companies using Afterpay on TechnologyChecker.io covers 34,053 merchants we could match to company records, out of 79,610 domains where we detect the checkout widget. That is a 42.8% match rate. We'd rather show it than hide it, because the unmatched merchants skew heavily toward very small independent stores with no LinkedIn presence.

Which Countries Use Afterpay the Most?

Which countries use Afterpay the most? The United States accounts for 16,739 enriched merchants (51.26%), but the more telling number is Australia at 20.07%. No other BNPL provider we track holds that much weight in its home market after a US expansion. The United Kingdom (9.16%), Canada (6.63%) and New Zealand (3.28%) round out a footprint that is just over 90% English-speaking.

Afterpay Customers by Company Size & Age

Is Afterpay only for small businesses? Mostly, yes. 76.47% of Afterpay merchants employ 1 to 10 people and another 17.43% employ 11 to 50, based on our analysis of 34,053 enriched companies. Under 1% have more than 500 staff. The enterprise names are real but rare: Old Navy, Skechers, Coach and Mattel all run it, yet the 10,001+ band is 0.09% of merchants.

What Industries Use Afterpay the Most?

Retail is the largest vertical at 18.49%. Add Retail Apparel and Fashion (7.21%) and Retail Luxury Goods and Jewelry (1.64%) and explicit retail passes 27%. Less obvious is how much of the tail is food and body: Restaurants (4.44%), Food and Beverage Services (4.04%), Wellness and Fitness Services (3.41%) and Personal Care Product Manufacturing (2.51%). Afterpay's basket sizes are small, and the merchant mix shows it.

Restaurants1,132 (4.44%)

Retail companies using Afterpay make up the largest single block at 4,713 enriched merchants. Fashion is the anchor: Coach, Michael Kors, Skechers, Steve Madden and Banana Republic all sit in our top 50 by audience size. The wellness and restaurant segments are the ones worth watching, because they were close to absent during Afterpay's Australian years and now account for roughly one merchant in thirteen.

Afterpay Alternatives & Competitors

Afterpay's lead is unusually wide for a payments category. At 68.33% it beats Affirm (8.17%) and Sezzle (7.45%) by an order of magnitude, and the fourth and fifth providers, HeyLight and Scalapay, are regional European players rather than direct rivals. Real competition is narrower than the category table suggests: in practice a merchant is choosing between Afterpay, Affirm and Sezzle.

Afterpay Customer Migration

Across the churn our crawler has watched directly since March 2026, Afterpay runs net positive against both main rivals. It gained 86 merchants from Affirm and gave 52 back, and gained 44 from Sezzle while losing 33. ResolvePay sent another 39. These volumes are small because we have only observed five months of switching, so read the direction rather than the totals.

Tech Stack of Afterpay-Powered Websites

Based on 79,237 active domains in our current crawl, Afterpay's loudest companion is Shopify at 43.75%, then Apple Pay (38.64%), Shop Pay (38.01%) and PayPal (37.35%). Square Online at 37.12% is the surprise, and it marks the small-merchant tail Shopify doesn't reach. One number worth flagging: only 0.98% of Afterpay merchants also run Sezzle and 0.52% run Affirm, so BNPL is close to winner-take-one per storefront.

Expert Analysis: Afterpay Growth Trends & Key Signals for Sales Teams in 2026

Emma Davies
Emma DaviesData Analyst, TechnologyChecker

I've spent the last five years pulling technology adoption data into prospect lists, and Afterpay is one of the cleanest examples I've worked with of a category where the leader and the typical customer look nothing alike. The brand names on this page are department-store fashion. The merchant base underneath is a very long tail of tiny independent shops.

The shape of the merchant base

We detect Afterpay on 79,610 live domains. Of those we matched 34,053 to company records, a 42.8% enrichment rate, and within that matched set 76.47% employ ten people or fewer. Another 17.43% employ 11 to 50. That puts about 94% of Afterpay's merchants under 50 staff. Companies above 10,000 employees account for 0.09%.

That distribution matters if you sell to these merchants. A prospect list built off Afterpay detection is not an enterprise list. It is a list of owner-operated retail, and the tooling those businesses buy, the deal sizes they support and the people who make the decision are all different from what the Old Navy logo implies.

Afterpay's recognisable customers are outliers inside its own merchant base. Fewer than one merchant in a thousand employs more than 10,000 people.

Australia never left

The geographic split is the number I keep coming back to. The United States is the largest market at 51.26% of enriched merchants, which is expected. Australia sitting at 20.07% is not. Afterpay launched in Australia in 2014 and its US expansion has since dominated the story, yet a fifth of the merchant base is still Australian, and New Zealand adds another 3.28%.

Compare that to Affirm, where the United States is 88.49% and no other country clears 8%. Afterpay is the only BNPL provider in our index with a genuinely multi-country merchant base, and the United Kingdom position (9.16%, trading as Clearpay) reinforces it. For anyone doing territory planning off this data, Afterpay is the provider where an ANZ segment is worth building separately.

What merchants sell

Retail leads at 18.49%, and folding in Retail Apparel and Fashion (7.21%) plus Retail Luxury Goods and Jewelry (1.64%) takes explicit retail past 27%. The interesting part is the second cluster: Restaurants at 4.44%, Food and Beverage Services at 4.04%, Wellness and Fitness Services at 3.41% and Personal Care Product Manufacturing at 2.51%.

Those are low-ticket, high-frequency categories. They tell you Afterpay's four-instalment split has been adopted well below the price points where instalment financing traditionally made sense. Affirm's merchant mix, by contrast, carries Motor Vehicle Manufacturing at 5.5% and Furniture at 3.64%, which is what a longer-term financing product attracts. Same category, two genuinely different businesses.

The multi-homing question

Before running this analysis I assumed BNPL stacked the way card wallets do, with merchants offering three or four providers at checkout. Our co-occurrence data says otherwise. Only 0.98% of Afterpay merchants also run Sezzle, and 0.52% also run Affirm. Against that, 38.64% run Apple Pay and 37.35% run PayPal alongside it.

So wallets stack and BNPL does not. Merchants pick one instalment provider and stay with it. That reframes the migration table on this page: when we record 86 merchants moving from Affirm to Afterpay, those are replacements, not additions.

Wallets stack, BNPL doesn't. Under 1% of Afterpay merchants run a second instalment provider, against 38.64% who also offer Apple Pay.

Switching, and what it's worth

Our crawler has been watching Afterpay's churn directly since 16 March 2026, which is about five months. In that window Afterpay gained 86 merchants from Affirm and lost 52 to it, gained 44 from Sezzle and lost 33, and picked up 39 from ResolvePay. Net positive on every line, but the absolute numbers are tiny against a base of 79,610.

I'd treat these as directional only. Five months is a short window, and 10,103 domains have dropped Afterpay entirely in that period without our seeing a replacement provider, which is a much larger flow than any of the competitive switches. Some of that is stores closing, some is merchants removing BNPL on cost grounds at roughly 4% to 6% plus $0.30 per transaction.

The platform tell

Co-occurrence data is usually where I find the sales angle, and Afterpay's is unusually split. Shopify appears on 43.75% of Afterpay storefronts, which is no surprise. Square Online at 37.12% is. That is a much higher Square share than we see under Affirm or Sezzle, and Square Online skews to physical businesses that added ecommerce later: cafes, salons, studios, small food producers.

Put that next to the industry mix, where Restaurants and Wellness and Fitness Services together account for close to 8% of merchants, and a second Afterpay population comes into view. It isn't only online fashion. A meaningful slice is bricks-and-mortar service businesses that took instalments online through Square. Sezzle, by comparison, sits at 93.09% Shopify, which makes it a pure Shopify-ecosystem play and a much narrower one.

Klaviyo on 21.39% is the other useful signal. Roughly one Afterpay merchant in five runs a dedicated ecommerce marketing platform, which is a reasonable proxy for the segment that has moved past a basic store setup. If you're prioritising a list, that intersection is where the budget is.

Reading the growth chart honestly

The usage chart on this page splices two measurement systems. Everything to July 2025 comes from our long-run detection history; everything from June 2026 comes from our own live crawl. The step from 30,803 to 67,447 across that gap is a coverage change, not adoption. Within the live crawl segment, which is like for like, Afterpay went from 67,447 in June 2026 to 79,610 in August 2026.

One more caveat on our own figures. We enrich 42.8% of Afterpay domains with company records, so every percentage in the distribution sections describes the matched 34,053, not all 79,610. The unmatched merchants are disproportionately tiny stores without a LinkedIn page, which means the true small-business concentration is probably higher than the 76.47% we can measure, not lower.

If you want one number from this page, take 79,610 storefronts at 68.33% category share. If you want the useful one, take 76.47% under ten employees. The first tells you Afterpay won the category. The second tells you who actually installed it, and those two facts point at completely different go-to-market motions.

Most merchants are far smaller than that: 76.47% employ ten people or fewer. TechnologyChecker.io tracks the full list and refreshes it as the widget appears on or disappears from each site.

Is Walmart on Afterpay?

No. Walmart does not appear anywhere in our Afterpay detections. Afterpay's US merchant base skews toward independent fashion, beauty and wellness retail rather than big-box chains. The large retailers we do detect running Afterpay include Old Navy, Banana Republic and Big W in Australia. Our data reflects what is live on a storefront, not announced partnerships.

Can you use Afterpay at Target?

Target does not appear in our Afterpay detection data. Big-box chains are rare across Afterpay's merchant base generally: only 0.09% of the 34,053 merchants we enriched employ more than 10,000 people, against 76.47% employing ten or fewer. Afterpay's US footprint is built on independent fashion, beauty and wellness retail rather than national general-merchandise chains, and our crawl reflects live storefronts.

How much does Afterpay cost a business?

Afterpay charges the merchant rather than the shopper. Published merchant guides put the US rate at roughly 4% to 6% of order value plus a $0.30 fixed fee per transaction, and Afterpay's own documentation notes the rate varies by contract and by whether the sale is online or in store. That is well above the 1% to 3% typical of card processing.

What are the downsides for businesses using Afterpay?

Cost is the main one, at roughly 4% to 6% plus $0.30 per transaction versus 1% to 3% for cards. Our churn data shows the practical consequence: 10,103 domains have dropped Afterpay since we began watching in March 2026. Merchants also cede some checkout branding, and approval decisions for shoppers sit with Afterpay rather than the store.

Is it better to use Klarna or Afterpay?

For merchant reach, Afterpay is far ahead in our index at 79,610 live storefronts. Klarna does not register meaningfully in our BNPL detections at all, so we can't make a fair adoption comparison from our own crawl. On product, Klarna offers a wider ladder of financing terms while Afterpay concentrates on the four-instalment, interest-free split.

What is the difference between Afterpay and Affirm?

Scale and basket size. Afterpay runs on 79,610 storefronts to Affirm's 9,523, but Affirm's merchants are bigger and sell dearer goods: motor vehicles (5.5%), luxury goods (6.74%) and furniture rank far higher in Affirm's industry mix. Afterpay skews to fashion, beauty and wellness, where the four-instalment split fits a smaller order.

Does Afterpay work with Shopify?

Yes, and Shopify is its single most common platform. Our co-occurrence data shows 43.75% of Afterpay storefronts also run Shopify, ahead of Square Online at 37.12%. Shop Pay appears on 38.01% and Apple Pay on 38.64%, so most Afterpay merchants offer it as one option among several wallets rather than as their only alternative checkout.

What industries use Afterpay the most?

Retail leads at 18.49% of enriched merchants, followed by Retail Apparel and Fashion at 7.21%. Restaurants (4.44%), Food and Beverage Services (4.04%) and Wellness and Fitness Services (3.41%) form a sizeable second cluster. Taken together, explicit retail categories pass 27% of Afterpay's merchant base in our enriched sample of 34,053 companies.

Do merchants run more than one buy now, pay later provider?

Rarely, which surprised us. Only 0.98% of Afterpay merchants also run Sezzle and just 0.52% also run Affirm. BNPL behaves close to winner-take-one per storefront, unlike card wallets where merchants stack Apple Pay, Google Pay and PayPal together. That also means the switching figures we report are genuine replacements rather than additions.

Is Afterpay the same as Clearpay?

They are the same product under different names. Afterpay trades as Clearpay in the United Kingdom and parts of Europe, which is why our UK detections (2,991 merchants, 9.16%) appear under the Afterpay signature. Both are owned by Block. Our detection matches the underlying checkout scripts rather than the brand shown to shoppers.

Is Afterpay still growing?

Yes, on our live crawl. Afterpay moved from 67,447 active domains in June 2026 to 79,610 by August 2026. Read the longer chart carefully, though: the jump between July 2025 and June 2026 reflects a change in our crawl coverage rather than adoption, so only the post-June 2026 segment is a like-for-like growth measurement.
