Shop Pay Usage Statistics

Shop Pay reads 802,723 domains on our first full monthly rollup in June 2026 and 1,203,619 by August 2026. That is not 50% growth in a quarter. The step is dominated by our detection coverage widening across Shopify's storefront estate, alongside the ordinary monthly turnover of the crawled domain set as dead stores drop out and new ones are added. July to August is comparatively flat, and that is the better read on the current trend.

There are 1,203,619 companies and websites using Shop Pay, sign up to download the entire Shop Pay dataset.

The largest merchants are recognisable brands running merchandise storefronts rather than their primary websites, including Ford, Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts, SpaceX, Whataburger, Forever 21 and Gold's Gym, alongside the United Nations Development Programme.

Which Countries Use Shop Pay the Most?

The United States accounts for 130,009 matched merchants, or 48.70% of those with a known country. The United Kingdom follows at 13.48% (35,997), then Australia at 8.61% (22,994) and Canada at 7.97% (21,280). That is a markedly more international distribution than most US-headquartered platforms show, and it tracks Shopify's own strength in English-speaking commerce markets.

Shop Pay Market Share Among Payment Processing

Shop Pay holds 14.61% of the Payment Processing category and ranks 3rd of 50 tracked technologies, behind PayPal (19.13%) and Apple Pay (15.46%). These shares overlap heavily rather than dividing a market: a Shopify checkout presents several of these methods at once, so the percentages describe how widely each button is offered, not how payments are split between them.

Shop Pay Customers by Company Size & Age

This is the smallest-business customer base in our corpus. Merchants with 1 to 10 employees are 77.94% of matched companies and 11 to 50 a further 16.81%, so 94.75% have fewer than 50 staff. Organisations above 1,000 employees account for 0.28%. Shop Pay is enabled by default on Shopify checkouts, so the distribution is effectively a census of Shopify's merchant base rather than a record of buying decisions.

Retail leads at 17.92%, followed by Retail Apparel and Fashion (10.72%), Food and Beverage Services (4.14%), Manufacturing (4.11%) and Wellness and Fitness Services (2.99%).

Retail, apparel and luxury goods together account for 31.61% of matched merchants, and adding food and beverage and wellness takes consumer goods past 38%. This is the sharpest single-sector concentration on the site, and it is a direct reflection of what Shopify is used for: physical consumer products sold direct to shoppers.

Shop Pay Alternatives & Competitors

Within Payment Processing, Shop Pay sits behind PayPal (1,575,738 domains) and Apple Pay (1,273,419), ahead of Visa, Mastercard and American Express. None of these is an alternative to the others in the usual sense. Apple Pay appears on 96.12% of Shop Pay checkouts and PayPal on 77.10%, so merchants offer them together rather than choosing between them.

Cloudflare appears on 99.92% of Shop Pay domains, which is not a merchant decision: Shopify fronts its storefront estate with Cloudflare, so the figure describes the platform rather than the shop. Google Analytics is on 48.10% and Google Tag Manager on 46.01%, both well below the corpus norm, reflecting that many small merchants rely on Shopify's built-in analytics instead.

Expert Analysis: Shop Pay Growth Trends & Key Signals for Sales Teams in 2026

Mehmet Suleyman
Mehmet SuleymanCEO & Co-founder, TechnologyChecker

A census, not an adoption curve

Shop Pay is the third most widely detected payment method on the web, present on 1,203,619 domains. It is also the least chosen. Shop Pay is enabled by default on Shopify checkouts, so what this page measures is not a purchasing decision by 1.2 million merchants but the reach of one commerce platform.

Reading it that way makes the data far more useful. The distributions here are the clearest public picture of Shopify's merchant base at scale: 77.94% of matched merchants have ten or fewer employees, 94.75% have fewer than fifty, and 72.58% were founded since 2010. That is a portrait of small, young, direct-to-consumer businesses, and it is drawn from 276,657 identified companies rather than a survey.

Shop Pay is enabled by default on Shopify checkouts. This page is therefore a census of the Shopify merchant base, not a record of 1.2 million buying decisions.

Payment methods coexist, so there is no switching table

The obvious analysis for a payment page is which processors merchants move between. We ran it and then discarded it, because the coexistence data makes the question meaningless.

Apple Pay appears on 96.12% of Shop Pay domains. PayPal appears on 77.10%. Visa and Mastercard sit around 61% each, American Express at 57.27% and Google Pay at 56.33%. A Shopify checkout renders these buttons side by side, and a merchant enabling one does not disable another. Any corridor we computed would be measuring stores that stopped trading, or pages our crawler happened to render differently, and presenting it as competitive displacement.

This is the same conclusion our earlier review of payment corridors reached across 51 pairs, where 50 turned out to be coexistence and none were migrations. TechnologyChecker.io publishes an empty switching section here rather than a plausible-looking table.

The large merchants are storefronts, not businesses

The named list is led by Ford, Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts, the United Nations Development Programme, Whataburger, Forever 21, SpaceX and Gold's Gym. Almost every one is a shop. subdomain.

That is the pattern worth understanding before using this list commercially. Large organisations rarely run their primary commerce on Shopify, but they very commonly run branded merchandise on it: staff stores, fan merchandise, promotional goods. A Shop Pay detection on a Fortune 500 domain usually identifies a merchandise programme rather than the company's main retail operation, and the buyer for that programme is a marketing or brand team, not the enterprise commerce group.

The geography is genuinely international

The United States accounts for 48.70% of matched merchants, which is low by the standards of our corpus, where US share for platform technologies routinely exceeds half. The United Kingdom takes 13.48%, Australia 8.61% and Canada 7.97%.

Australia at that level is the notable figure. It is several times what the country's economic size would predict, and it reflects Shopify's early and durable strength in Australian direct-to-consumer retail. For anyone segmenting this list by market, the English-speaking commerce world is meaningfully more than a US story here.

Cloudflare appears on 99.92% of these domains. That is Shopify's infrastructure choice, not 1.2 million merchants each choosing a CDN.

What the stack says about small merchants

Google Analytics appears on only 48.10% of Shop Pay domains and Google Tag Manager on 46.01%. Both sit well below what a commerce-heavy population would normally show.

The explanation is that Shopify ships its own analytics, and a very large share of these merchants never add anything external. That is a commercially significant fact for anyone selling analytics, attribution or tag governance into this list: roughly half the addressable base has no third-party measurement at all, which is either a wide-open opportunity or an indication that these merchants will not pay for one, depending on the price point.

The Cloudflare figure of 99.92% should be read the opposite way. It is not a merchant choice at all; Shopify fronts its storefront estate with Cloudflare, so the number describes the platform. Treating it as a CDN adoption signal would be a mistake, and it is a good example of why a co-occurrence row needs a mechanism before it means anything.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who uses Shop Pay?

Our live crawl finds Shop Pay on 1,203,619 domains, resolving to 276,657 identifiable merchants. The base is overwhelmingly small retail: 77.94% have ten or fewer employees and retail is the largest industry at 17.92%. Large brands appear too, including Ford, Four Seasons, SpaceX, Whataburger and Forever 21, usually on branded merchandise storefronts.

How many customers does Shop Pay have?

We detect 1,203,619 domains running Shop Pay across our monthly crawl of live business domains. Company data could be matched for 276,657 of them (23.0%), and every company-size, industry and country breakdown on this page describes that matched subset rather than the full detected base. A further 72,410 domains carried a Shop Pay detection previously and no longer do.

What is Shop Pay's market share?

Shop Pay holds 14.61% of our Payment Processing category and ranks 3rd of 50 tracked technologies, behind PayPal at 19.13% and Apple Pay at 15.46%. These shares overlap rather than sum to a market split, because a single checkout commonly offers several of them at once. The figure measures how widely the button is presented.

What are the best alternatives to Shop Pay?

The top alternatives to Shop Pay include PayPal (19.13% market share), Apple Pay (15.46% market share), Visa (10.79% market share), Mastercard (10.78% market share) — measured as a share of the domains we detect running a platform in this category.

Which countries use Shop Pay the most?

The United States leads at 48.70% of matched merchants (130,009), followed by the United Kingdom at 13.48% (35,997), Australia at 8.61% (22,994) and Canada at 7.97% (21,280). Germany and France follow at 3.63% and 2.28%. The base is more international than most US-headquartered platforms in our corpus.

What size companies use Shop Pay?

Shop Pay has the smallest-business base we measure. Merchants with 1 to 10 employees are 77.94% of matched companies and 11 to 50 a further 16.81%, so 94.75% have fewer than 50 staff. Only 0.28% employ more than 1,000 people, and those are typically large brands running a separate merchandise storefront.

How old are companies that use Shop Pay?

This is the youngest customer base we track. Merchants founded in the 2010s are 44.11% of matched companies and those founded in the 2020s a further 28.47%, so 72.58% were founded since 2010. Only 2.99% predate 1960, which is what a direct-to-consumer commerce platform's merchant base looks like.

What is the ideal customer profile for Shop Pay?

Based on our matched merchant data, the typical Shop Pay store belongs to a US, UK or Australian company with fewer than ten employees, founded since 2010, selling physical consumer goods in retail, apparel or food and beverage. Shop Pay ships with Shopify, so the profile describes Shopify's merchant base rather than an independent purchase.

How many stores use Shop Pay?

We detect Shop Pay on 1,203,619 domains as of our August 2026 crawl, of which 276,657 match to a named company. Because Shop Pay is enabled by default on Shopify checkouts, this figure is close to a census of active Shopify storefronts we can reach rather than a count of deliberate adoption decisions.

What industries use Shop Pay most?

Retail leads at 17.92% of matched merchants, with Retail Apparel and Fashion at 10.72%, Food and Beverage Services at 4.14%, Manufacturing at 4.11% and Wellness and Fitness Services at 2.99%. Retail, apparel and luxury goods together are 31.61%, the sharpest single-sector concentration we publish.

How do you detect Shop Pay on a website?

We match several Shop Pay specific signals: the ShopPay and ShopifyPay.apiHost JavaScript objects, script requests to Shopify's shopify_pay bundle and to shop.app checkouts, and the Shop Pay button element rendered in the checkout container. All require the checkout to actually offer Shop Pay on a page we crawled.

Do merchants choose Shop Pay over PayPal or Apple Pay?

No, and our data shows why clearly. Apple Pay appears on 96.12% of Shop Pay domains and PayPal on 77.10%, with Visa and Mastercard around 61% each. A Shopify checkout presents these methods together, so they coexist rather than compete. We publish no switching data for Shop Pay for this reason.

What technologies are used alongside Shop Pay?

Cloudflare appears on 99.92% of Shop Pay domains, though that reflects Shopify fronting its storefront estate rather than any merchant choice. Google Analytics is on 48.10% and Google Tag Manager on 46.01%, both below the corpus norm, because many small merchants rely on Shopify's built-in reporting instead of adding external analytics.

Is Shop Pay growing?

Our rollups read 802,723 domains in June 2026, 1,178,100 in July and 1,203,619 in August. The June to July step is mostly our detection coverage widening across Shopify's storefront estate rather than merchant growth, and the crawled domain set turns over monthly. The flatter July to August reading is the more reliable indicator.
