Companies Using D3
D3 is a free, open-source JavaScript library for building custom data visualisations, and our October 2026 crawl finds it on 20,719 sites. Treat that as a floor. We count D3 when a page loads it as a standalone script or exposes the global d3 object, so applications that import D3 modules through a bundler, including the ES-module setup D3's getting-started guide recommends, mostly don't show up. The companies that use D3 in this list include Lockheed Martin, the US Census Bureau, the World Bank and the NFL's Next Gen Stats site.
D3 ranks #4 of 55 in Charting & Data Visualization with a 4.25% share, behind Chart.js, Highcharts and ApexCharts.js. The visible base leans to classic front ends: jQuery runs on 87.62% of D3 sites. One vendor shapes it as well. Real estate tops our industry chart because iHomefinder, a property-search and website platform for estate agents, ships D3 version 3.5.6 inside its WordPress script, and 829 of the 1,030 real-estate companies we checked run iHomefinder. We matched 11,646 of the 20,719 sites to a company.

D3 Usage Statistics
Our current crawl window counts 13,779 D3 sites in June 2026, 16,469 in July, 18,718 in August, 20,536 in September and 20,719 in October 2026. That is a 50% rise in four months, and we wouldn't read it as adoption. Counts are not a like-for-like series: the set of domains we crawl turns over every month, with dead sites dropping out and newly found ones added, and our detection signals widen over time. The curve has also flattened, with 183 sites added between September and October. 2,453 domains dropped D3 since we began tracking it in March 2026; about 15% of such domains (377 of 2,481 when we re-checked) still run it on another hostname.

Which Countries Use D3 the Most?
Which countries use D3 the most? The United States leads with 3,962 of the 11,646 sites we matched to a company, about five times the United Kingdom (765). Germany (558), Brazil (503), India (417) and France (398) follow, then Spain (333), Italy (312) and Canada (299). Switzerland (162) and Turkey (144) also make the top 13. Public data portals carry D3 well beyond the US: Brazil's statistics office IBGE, for one, loads it in its SIDRA tables.
Share of the 11,646 D3 domains we matched to a company record — 56.2% of the 20,719 we detect. Top 15 countries shown, so these do not sum to 100%. Domains with no matching company record are not represented here and skew small and independent.
D3 Market Share Among Charting & Data Visualization
What is D3's market share? D3 holds 4.25% of the Charting & Data Visualization category and ranks #4 of 55 on TechnologyChecker.io, behind Chart.js (66.4%), Highcharts (5.2%) and ApexCharts.js (4.79%). The share understates D3, because our rule sees standalone script loads, while modern React and Svelte apps import D3 modules through a bundler and leave no d3 global behind. Read 4.25% as the script-tag share of D3, not of all D3 code in production.
Top Competitors by Market Share
D3 Customers by Company Size & Age
Is D3 only used by small companies? By count, mostly: 51.82% of matched companies with a known size have 1-10 employees and 76.53% have 50 or fewer, and many of those are estate agents on iHomefinder sites. The enterprise tail is real, though. 496 companies have more than 1,000 employees and 101 have more than 10,000, including Lockheed Martin on its sustainability site, 7-Eleven and USAA on their careers sites and MD Anderson Cancer Center on its main site.
Company Size Distribution
Company Age (Founded Decade)
39.22% of matched companies with a known founding year date from the 2010s and 13.07% from the 2020s, so just over half (52.29%) were founded in 2010 or later. At the other end, 500 companies (7.54%) predate 1960. That older group includes universities whose research portals load D3, such as the University of Manchester (founded 1824) and Queen's University Belfast (1845), and both still run D3 version 3.5.5.
What Industries Use D3 the Most?
Real Estate tops the chart at 10.03% (1,029 companies), ahead of Software Development (6.26%) and IT Services and IT Consulting (5.46%). That lead is one vendor's doing. 829 of the 1,030 real-estate companies we checked run iHomefinder's IDX property search, whose WordPress bundle includes D3; without them real estate would hold about 200 companies, far below software development's 642. Software and IT services together make 11.72%, which is where D3's deliberate users cluster, based on our enriched company data.
Real estate agencies using D3 mostly get it through iHomefinder's property search rather than by choice. Software companies using D3 (642) and IT services firms on D3 (560) are the developer-led core. Government agencies using D3 (233) and universities using D3 (295 in Higher Education) include the data publishers: the US Census Bureau, IBGE's SIDRA statistics tables and the University of Manchester's research portal all load it. Financial services firms on D3 number 359, and investment banks such as Jefferies run it on their main site, based on our enriched company data.
D3 Alternatives & Competitors
D3 sits fourth in a category one library dominates. Chart.js (66.4%, 323,384 domains) leads by a wide margin, then Highcharts (5.2%) and ApexCharts.js (4.79%). Recharts (1.15%) and ECharts (0.96%) trail D3, though Recharts is built with React and D3, and D3 used inside a React app is mostly invisible to our rule. Overlap at the top is common: 1,773 domains run D3 and Chart.js today and 829 run D3 with Highcharts, so these libraries more often sit side by side than replace each other.
D3 Customer Migration
Tech Stack of D3-Powered Websites
The D3 stack is a classic one. Across the 20,919 live domains in our stack analysis, jQuery runs on 87.62%, core-js on 43.48%, jQuery UI on 41.42%, Moment.js on 30.91% and Underscore.js on 25.35%. Modern frameworks are thin: React 5.44%, Next.js 2.67%. Two figures need care. Leaflet (14.79%) and Zone.js (13.19%) look like map builds and Angular apps, but about seven in ten of the sites behind each also run iHomefinder, so both mostly trace back to one property-search widget. WordPress (35.04%) is the leading CMS, and Google Analytics is on 59.09%.

Expert Analysis: D3 Growth Trends & Key Signals for Sales Teams in 2026

I spend a lot of my time on what our detection rules can and cannot see, and D3 is a good example of why that matters. Our October 2026 crawl finds D3 on 20,719 sites, and we matched 11,646 of them to a company. That number describes one way of shipping D3, the script tag, and says little about the bundled applications where much modern D3 code lives.
What the rule sees, and what it misses
We count a site when a page loads d3.js or d3.min.js, requests a file from d3js.org, or exposes the global d3.version. D3's getting-started guide recommends a CDN-hosted ES module bundle for plain HTML and an npm install for applications. Neither leaves a d3.js file or a global behind, so React, Svelte and other bundled apps that import D3 modules are mostly invisible to us. The visible part is classic: jQuery runs on 87.62% of the 20,919 live D3 domains in our stack analysis, Moment.js on 30.91% and Underscore.js on 25.35%, while React reaches only 5.44%.
Sales Signal: read a D3 detection as "this site ships hand-built visualisations the older way." For the modern, bundled D3 market, use framework and hiring signals instead of this list.
Growth trajectory
The current window runs from 13,779 sites in June 2026 to 20,719 in October, a 50% rise I wouldn't call adoption. Counts are not a like-for-like series: the set of domains we crawl turns over every month, with dead sites dropping out and newly found ones added, and our detection signals widen over time. The curve has flattened too, adding 183 sites between September and October. Exits are real but modest: 2,453 domains dropped D3 since we began tracking it in March 2026, and when we re-checked, 377 of 2,481 such domains still ran it on another hostname.
"Our D3 number is a count of script tags. D3 compiled into a modern app doesn't announce itself, so the real installed base is larger than anything a crawler can count from outside." - David Thomson, CTO at TechnologyChecker.io
Sales Signal: this is a mature, stable base. Plan for maintenance and replacement work on existing visualisations, not greenfield adoption.
One vendor makes real estate the top industry
Real Estate leads our industry chart at 10.03%, which looked wrong for a developer library until we checked it. 829 of the 1,030 real-estate companies matched to D3 also run iHomefinder, a CRM, IDX property-search and website platform for agents. In a browser, iHomefinder's WordPress bundle from idxhome.com turned out to contain D3 version 3.5.6, released in July 2015, and to expose it as the global our rule reads. Across all D3 sites iHomefinder appears on about 2,150 domains, roughly one in ten. Take those out and real estate falls to about 200 companies, behind software development (642) and IT services (560).
Sales Signal: the estate agents on this list did not choose D3; iHomefinder did. They are prospects for real-estate marketing tools, not developer tooling, and the D3 decision for those sites sits with iHomefinder.
Who chose D3
The deliberate users cluster around published data. The US Census Bureau loads D3 6.2.0 on census.gov, Brazil's statistics office IBGE uses it in its SIDRA tables, and the World Bank's open-data site runs 3.5.6. Lockheed Martin's sustainability site (7.8.2), the NFL's Next Gen Stats (7.9.0, straight from d3js.org) and Jefferies' homepage (7.9.0) show current versions in commercial use. Two platforms show up repeatedly among large organisations: university research portals built on Elsevier's Pure, where Manchester and Queen's University Belfast both load D3 3.5.5, and careers sites, where 7-Eleven and USAA both pull D3 7.9.0 from the same recruitment-site host. Many of these installs are old. Of the 17 enterprise pages where we could read a version, 9 ran D3 3.x or older, a line replaced by version 4 in June 2016; MD Anderson Cancer Center still loads 2.10.3.
Sales Signal: a D3 3.x install on a public data portal is technical debt that someone owns. Front-end modernisation and data-visualisation agencies have a concrete opener in the version number.
Industry and geography
Beyond real estate, the spread is developer-led: Software Development (6.26%) and IT Services and IT Consulting (5.46%) together make 11.72%, then Financial Services (3.5%), Technology, Information and Internet (3.3%) and Higher Education (2.88%). Government Administration (2.27%, 233 companies) fits the statistics and open-data portals above. The United States leads with 3,962 matched companies, about five times the United Kingdom (765), then Germany (558), Brazil (503) and India (417). By size, 51.82% have 1-10 employees, but 496 companies have more than 1,000.
Sales Signal: the strongest D3 accounts are public bodies, universities and research-heavy enterprises in the US, UK and Germany, where visualisation is part of what they publish.
Overlap with other charting libraries
Our switching table for D3 is empty: no corridor passed our tests, mainly because most domains that ever ran D3 with a rival still run both. 1,773 domains run D3 and Chart.js today, 829 run it with Highcharts, 209 with ApexCharts.js, 111 with ECharts, 44 with Google Charts and 8 with Recharts. Of the 2,050 domains we have ever seen running D3 and Chart.js together, 86.5% still run both.
"D3 rarely loses a site to another library. It gains a neighbour: 1,773 of the 2,050 domains we've seen running D3 with Chart.js still run both." - David Thomson, CTO at TechnologyChecker.io
Sales Signal: a vendor pitching "replace D3" is arguing against the data. The better pitch goes to teams maintaining two charting stacks who might want one supported library for routine charts.
The stack around it
WordPress runs on 35.04% of D3 domains and Elementor on 10.29%. Two numbers need a warning. Leaflet (14.79%) and Zone.js (13.19%) look like map builds and Angular apps, but about seven in ten of the sites behind each also run iHomefinder, so both mostly trace back to the same property-search widget. Google Analytics is on 59.09%, Mapbox GL JS on 1.82% and OpenLayers on 0.41%.
Sales Signal: if you sell to deliberate D3 users, exclude iHomefinder sites first. Otherwise Leaflet and Zone.js make the list look more map-heavy and more Angular than it is.
Key takeaways
- 20,719 sites in October 2026, #4 of 55 in charting with a 4.25% share, and a floor, because bundled apps are invisible.
- About one in ten D3 sites is an iHomefinder real-estate site carrying D3 3.5.6, which is why Real Estate tops the industry chart.
- Deliberate use clusters on data publishing: statistics offices, the World Bank, research portals, sports stats.
- Old versions are common: 9 of 17 enterprise pages ran D3 3.x or older.
- No switching corridor. D3 coexists with Chart.js on 1,773 domains.
Sales applications
Targeting: on TechnologyChecker.io, filter D3, exclude iHomefinder IDX, then keep Government Administration, Higher Education, Software Development and Financial Services. That isolates teams who write D3 themselves.
Outreach: "Your [portal] still loads D3 3.5, which predates version 4 (2016). We move public data visualisations to current D3 or a maintained charting library without breaking the charts people already link to."
Competitive angle: the 1,773 sites running D3 and Chart.js side by side are the natural audience for one supported charting library.

Frequently Asked Questions
Who uses D3?
Data publishers and developers, plus one large accidental group. We detect D3 on 20,719 sites; verified users include Lockheed Martin, the US Census Bureau, the World Bank's open-data site, the NFL's Next Gen Stats and MD Anderson Cancer Center. About 2,150 sites get D3 inside iHomefinder's real-estate search, which is why Real Estate tops our industry chart at 10.03%.
How many customers does D3 have?
D3 is free and open source, so it has users, not customers. Our October 2026 crawl finds 20,719 sites loading it as a standalone script, and we matched 11,646 of them to a company. That is a floor: apps that import D3 modules through a bundler expose no d3 global and load no d3.js file, so our rule misses most of them.
What is D3's market share?
D3 holds 4.25% of the Charting & Data Visualization category on TechnologyChecker.io, ranking #4 of 55 behind Chart.js (66.4%), Highcharts (5.2%) and ApexCharts.js (4.79%). The figure counts only sites where D3 loads as a standalone script, so it undercounts modern bundled applications. Treat it as the share of classic, script-tag D3.
What are the best alternatives to D3?
It depends on why you picked D3. For standard charts with less code, Chart.js (66.4% of the category), Highcharts (5.2%) and ApexCharts.js (4.79%) are the common choices, and in React, Recharts is built on React and D3. Many teams keep D3 anyway: 1,773 domains run it alongside Chart.js today and 829 alongside Highcharts in our crawl.
Which countries use D3 the most?
United States leads with 3,962 matched D3 domains, followed by United Kingdom (765), Germany (558), Brazil (503), India (417). These are counts within the 11,646 domains we could match to a company record, not the full detected base.
What size companies use D3?
Mostly small ones by count: 51.82% of matched companies with a known size have 1-10 employees and 76.53% have 50 or fewer, based on our analysis of 11,646 enriched companies. Many are estate agents using iHomefinder. The enterprise tail is real, though: 496 companies have more than 1,000 employees, among them Lockheed Martin, 7-Eleven and USAA.
How old are companies that use D3?
Among the D3 domains we could match to a company with a known founding date, the largest group was founded in the 2010s (39.22%), followed by the 2000s (18.54%). That matched subset is drawn from 11,646 companies and is not representative of all 20,719 detected domains. This suggests D3 is most popular among relatively young companies.
What is the ideal customer profile for D3?
The ideal D3 customer is: Company Size: 1-10 employees (51.82%), Location: US, UK or Germany, Founded: 2010 or later (52.29%), Industry: Real estate (via IDX), software, IT services, Front end: jQuery-era site (87.62% jQuery) — based on our analysis of 11,646 enriched companies at TechnologyChecker.io.
Is D3.js free?
Yes. D3's site calls it a free, open-source JavaScript library, released under the ISC licence, which permits use for any purpose, commercial included. Mike Bostock created it in 2011, and he and Philippe Rivière now maintain it at Observable. The real cost is development time: D3 has no ready-made chart types, so someone builds each visualisation.
What is D3.js used for?
Building custom, data-driven graphics in the browser. D3's documentation calls it a low-level toolbox rather than a charting library. In our crawl the deliberate uses centre on publishing data: the US Census Bureau, IBGE's SIDRA statistics tables, the World Bank's open-data site, university research portals built on Elsevier's Pure and the NFL's Next Gen Stats.
Is D3 JS difficult?
Harder than a charting library, by design. D3's own documentation says it has no concept of charts: you compose scales, shapes, axes and data joins yourself. That buys full control at the price of a steeper learning curve. Many sites pair it with a simpler library; 1,773 domains run D3 and Chart.js together in our October 2026 crawl.
Is D3.js still relevant?
Yes, though the part we can see is often old code. D3's latest release on GitHub is v7.9.0 from March 2024, and the repository has more than 113,000 stars. We find it on 20,719 sites as a standalone script, and of 17 enterprise pages where we read the version, 9 ran version 3 or older, a line replaced by version 4 in June 2016.
How can I use D3.js in React?
Install d3 from npm and import the modules you need. D3's documentation notes that most modules, such as d3-scale and d3-array, don't touch the DOM, so they work inside React's declarative rendering. Used that way, D3 is compiled into the app and sets no global d3 object, which is why React apps rarely appear in our 20,719 D3 count.
Does D3 use SVG?
Yes, and not only SVG. D3's GitHub description reads 'Bring data to life with SVG, Canvas and HTML', and most examples render SVG elements bound to data. A D3 chart leaves no vendor watermark in that markup, so we detect D3 from the script file or the global d3 object instead, on 20,719 sites in October 2026.
Is D3 better than Chart.js?
For custom or unusual visualisations, D3 gives more control; for standard charts built quickly, Chart.js is easier. Chart.js runs on 323,384 domains in our crawl against D3's 20,719, though our D3 count misses bundled apps. The two often coexist: 1,773 domains run both today, and 86.5% of the domains we have ever seen running both still do.
Why is real estate the top industry for D3?
Because of one vendor. iHomefinder, which sells property search and websites to estate agents, ships D3 version 3.5.6 inside its WordPress script bundle, and that bundle exposes the d3 global our rule detects. 829 of the 1,030 real-estate companies we checked run iHomefinder. Without them, real estate would fall to about 200 companies.
How does TechnologyChecker.io detect D3?
We count a site when a page loads a script named d3.js or d3.min.js, loads a file from d3js.org, or exposes the global d3.version. That catches classic script-tag installs and bundles that publish the d3 global, like iHomefinder's. It misses apps that import D3 as ES modules through a bundler, so our 20,719 is a floor.
